Abstract:The dynamics of dry active matter have implications for a diverse collection of biological phenomena spanning a range of length and time scales, such as animal flocking, cell tissue dynamics, and swarming of inserts and bacteria. Uniting these systems are a common set of symmetries and conservation laws, defining dry active fluids as a class of physical system. Many interesting behaviours have been observed at high densities, which remain difficult to simulate due to the computational demand. Here, we show how two-dimensional dry active fluids in a dense regime can be studied using a simple modification of the lattice Boltzmann method. We apply our method on a model that exhibits motility-induced phase separation, and an active model with contact inhibition of locomotion, which has relevance to collective cell migration. For the latter, we uncover multiple novel phase transitions: two first-order and one potentially critical. We further support our simulation results with an analytical treatment of the hydrodynamic equations obtained via a Chapman-Enskog coarse-graining procedure.

Abstract:Clusters of biological organisms often show diverse collective motions. Considering the physical properties of active elements with mutual interactions, we propose a mathematical model of collective motion. Several kinds of cluster motion seen in nature, including collective rotation, chaos, and wandering, occur in computer simulations of our deterministic model. By introducing a set of dimensionless parameters, we categorize the collective motions and obtain their phase diagram. We analyze the collective motions with a disorder parameter and Lyapunov spectra to characterize their transitions.

Abstract:A fluctuating lattice Boltzmann model for particle Brownian motion was established by incorporating a stochastic term into the lattice Boltzmann equation,which represents the thermally-induced fluctuations in the stress tensor.The conditions for the stochastic term were derived and the expressions of the stochastic term for the D2Q9 lattice model were also presented.The fluctuating hydrodynamic equations were derived from the lattice Boltzmann equation through Chapman-Enskog expansion.The Brownian motion of a single circular particle was numerically investigated by the newly developed lattice Boltzmann model.Numerical results including particle mean-square velocity,velocity autocorrelation function and angular velocity autocorrelation function were presented.The energy equipartition theorem was reproduced by the results of mean-square velocity,which indicated that the particle was in thermal equilibrium.The results showed that the velocity autocorrelation function and the angular velocity autocorrelation function decayed as a power law of t-1 and t-2 respectively,as theoretically stated.Numerical results showed the accuracy and robustness of the present model,which was proved to be an effective numerical method for the particle Brownian motion.
Lanes and lattice structures in a repulsive model for self-propelled agents

Abstract:We investigate a simple Vicsek-type rule-based model for self-propelled particles, where each particle orients itself antiparallel to the average orientation of particles within a defined neighborhood of radius $R$. The particle orientation is updated asynchronously and randomly across the system. In steady state, particles self-organize into clusters-despite the repulsive interaction-and form two interwoven hexagonal lattices moving in opposite directions chosen spontaneously. Increasing noise in the reorientation step reduces the laning effect, but the global crystalline order remains intact at sufficiently high densities. The mean-squared displacement exhibits super-diffusive growth $ \sim t^{3/2} $ in the transient phase, transitioning to ballistic motion $ \sim t^2 $ in the steady state in the high density and zero noise regime. With an increase in noise and/or decrease in density, the mean-squared displacement grows diffusively $ \sim t $. We observe a cutoff for the ratio $ \frac{R}{L} \sim 0.2-0.3 $, below which laning and crystallization is achieved, suggesting a local but non-microscopic sphere of influence is required to initiate laning.

Continuum approximations for lattice-free multi-species models of collective cell migration

Abstract:Abstract Cell migration within tissues involves the interaction of many cells from distinct subpopulations. In this work, we present a discrete model of collective cell migration where the motion of individual cells is driven by random forces, short range repulsion forces to mimic crowding, and longer range attraction forces to mimic adhesion. This discrete model can be used to simulate a population of cells that is composed of K ≥ 1 distinct subpopulations. To analyse the discrete model we formulate a hierarchy of moment equations that describe the spatial evolution of the density of agents, pairs of agents, triplets of agents, and so forth. To solve the hierarchy of moment equations we introduce two forms of closure: (i) the mean field approximation, which effectively assumes that the distributions of individual agents are independent; and (ii) a moment dynamics description that is based on the Kirkwood superposition approximation. The moment dynamics description provides an approximate way of incorporating spatial patterns, such as agent clustering, into the continuum description. Comparing the performance of the two continuum descriptions confirms that both perform well when adhesive forces are sufficiently weak. In contrast, the moment dynamics description outperforms the mean field model when adhesive forces are sufficiently large. This is a first attempt to provide an accurate continuum description of a lattice-free, multi-species model of collective cell migration.

Abstract:Recent studies suggest that non-cooperative behavior such as cannibalism may also be a driving mechanism of collective motion. Motivated by these novel results we introduce a simple model of Brownian particles interacting by pursuit and escape interactions. We show the onset of collective motion due to escape and pursuit response of individuals and demonstrate how experimentally accessible macroscopic observables depend strongly on the ratio of the escape and pursuit strength. We analyze the different impact of the escape and pursuit response on the motion statistics and determine the scaling of the migration speed with model parameters.

Self-Propelled Collective Motion with Multiplicative Scalar Noise

Abstract:The emergence of order from initial disordered movement in self-propelled collective motion is an instance of nonequilibrium phase transition, which is known to be first order in the thermodynamic limit. Here, we introduce a multiplicative scalar noise model of collective motion as a modification of the original Vicsek model, which more closely mimics the particles' behavior. We allow for more individual movement in sparsely populated neighborhoods, the mechanism of which is not incorporated in the original Vicsek model. This is especially important in the low velocity and density regime where the probability of a clear neighborhood is relatively high. The modification, thus, removes the shortcoming of the Vicsek model in predicting continuous phase transition in this regime. The onset of collective motion in the proposed model is numerically studied in detail, indicating a first order phase transition in both high and low velocity/density regimes for systems with comparatively smaller size which is computationally desirable.

Emergent Dynamic Structures and Statistical Law in Spherical Lattice Gas Automata.

Abstract:Various lattice gas automata have been proposed in the past decades to simulate physics and address a host of problems on collective dynamics arising in diverse fields. In this work, we employ the lattice gas model defined on the sphere to investigate the curvature-driven dynamic structures and analyze the statistical behaviors in equilibrium. Under the simple propagation and collision rules, we show that the uniform collective movement of the particles on the sphere is geometrically frustrated, leading to several nonequilibrium dynamic structures not found in the planar lattice, such as the emergent bubble and vortex structures. With the accumulation of the collision effect, the system ultimately reaches equilibrium in the sense that the distribution of the coarse-grained speed approaches the two-dimensional Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution despite the population fluctuations in the coarse-grained cells. The emergent regularity in the statistical behavior of the system is rationalized by mapping our system to a generalized random walk model. This work demonstrates the capability of the spherical lattice gas automaton in revealing the lattice-guided dynamic structures and simulating the equilibrium physics. It suggests the promising possibility of using lattice gas automata defined on various curved surfaces to explore geometrically driven nonequilibrium physics.
Collective motion of self-propelled particles interacting without cohesion

Abstract:We present a comprehensive study of Vicsek-style self-propelled particle models in two and three space dimensions. The onset of collective motion in such stochastic models with only local alignment interactions is studied in detail and shown to be discontinuous (first-order-like). The properties of the ordered, collectively moving phase are investigated. In a large domain of parameter space including the transition region, well-defined high-density and high-order propagating solitary structures are shown to dominate the dynamics. Far enough from the transition region, on the other hand, these objects are not present. A statistically homogeneous ordered phase is then observed, which is characterized by anomalously strong density fluctuations, superdiffusion, and strong intermittency.

Abstract:Living systems are full of astonishing diversity and complexity of life. Despite differences in the length scales and cognitive abilities of these systems, collective motion of large groups of individuals can emerge. It is of great importance to seek for the fundamental principles of collective motion, such as phase transitions and their natures. Via an eigen microstate approach, we have found a discontinuous transition of density and a continuous transition of velocity in the Vicsek models of collective motion, which are identified by the finite-size scaling form of order-parameter. At strong noise, living systems behave like gas. With the decrease of noise, the interactions between the particles of a living system become stronger and make them come closer. The living system experiences then a discontinuous gas–liquid like transition of density. The even stronger interactions at smaller noise make the velocity directions of the particles become ordered and there is a continuous phase transition of collective motion in addition.
Scaling Mobility Patterns and Collective Movements: Deterministic Walks in Lattices

Abstract:Scaling mobility patterns have been widely observed for animals. In this paper, we propose a deterministic walk model to understand the scaling mobility patterns, where walkers take the least-action walks on a lattice landscape and prey. Scaling laws in the displacement distribution emerge when the amount of prey resource approaches the critical point. Around the critical point, our model generates ordered collective movements of walkers with a quasi-periodic synchronization of walkers' directions. These results indicate that the co-evolution of walkers' least-action behavior and the landscape could be a potential origin of not only the individual scaling mobility patterns, but also the flocks of animals. Our findings provide a bridge to connect the individual scaling mobility patterns and the ordered collective movements.
Probing the Role of Mobility in the Collective Motion of Nonequilibrium Systems.

Abstract:By systematically varying the mobility of self-propelled particles in a 2D lattice, we experimentally study the influence of particle mobility on system's collective motion. Our system is intrinsically nonequilibrium due to the lack of energy equipartition. By constructing the covariance matrix of spatial fluctuations and solving for its eigenmodes, we obtain the collective motions of the system with various magnitudes. Interestingly, our structurally ordered nonequilibrium system exhibits properties almost identical to disordered glassy systems under thermal equilibrium: the modes with large overall motions are spatially correlated and quasilocalized while the modes with small collective motions are highly localized, resembling the low- and high-frequency modes in glass. More surprisingly, a peak similar to the boson peak forms in our nonequilibrium system as the number of mobile particles increases, revealing the possible origin of the boson peak from a dynamic aspect. We further illustrate that the spatially correlated large-movement modes can be produced by the cooperation of highly active particles above a threshold fraction, while the localized small-movement modes can be created by adding individual inactive particles. Our study clarifies the role of mobility in collective motions, and further suggests a promising possibility of extending the powerful mode analysis approach to nonequilibrium systems.
Cellular automaton models for time-correlated random walks: derivation and analysis

Abstract:Many diffusion processes in nature and society were found to be anomalous, in the sense of being fundamentally different from conventional Brownian motion. An important example is the migration of biological cells, which exhibits non-trivial temporal decay of velocity autocorrelation functions. This means that the corresponding dynamics is characterized by memory effects that slowly decay in time. Motivated by this we construct non-Markovian lattice-gas cellular automata models for moving agents with memory. For this purpose the reorientation probabilities are derived from velocity autocorrelation functions that are given a priori; in that respect our approach is `data-driven'. Particular examples we consider are velocity correlations that decay exponentially or as power laws, where the latter functions generate anomalous diffusion. The computational efficiency of cellular automata combined with our analytical results paves the way to explore the relevance of memory and anomalous diffusion for the dynamics of interacting cell populations, like confluent cell monolayers and cell clustering.

How motility affects Ising transitions

Abstract:We study a lattice gas model of hard-core particles on a square lattice experiencing nearest neighbour attraction $J$. Each particle has an internal orientation, independent of the others, that point towards one of the four nearest neighbour and it can move to the neighbouring site along that direction with the usual Metropolis rate if the target site is vacant. The internal orientation of the particle can also change to any of the other three with a constant rate $\omega.$ The dynamics of the model in $\omega\to \infty$ reduces to that of the Lattice Gas (LG) which exhibits a phase separation transition at particle density $\rho=\frac12$ and temperature $T=1,$ when the strength of attraction $J$ crosses a threshold value $\ln(1+ \sqrt{2}).$ This transition belongs to Ising universality class. For any finite $\omega>0,$ the particles can be considered as attractive run-and-tumble particles (RTPs) in two dimensions with motility $\omega^{-1}.$ We find that RTPs also exhibit a phase separation transition, but the critical interaction required is $J_c(\omega)$ which increases monotonically with increased motility $\omega^{-1}.$ It appears that the transition belongs to Ising universality class. Surprisingly, in these models, motility impedes cluster formation process necessitating higher interaction to stabilize microscopic clusters. Moreover, MIPS like phases are not found when $J=0.$

Abstract:We demonstrate that a system of self-propelled particles (SPP) exhibits spontaneous symmetry breaking and self-organization in one dimension, in contrast with previous analytical predictions. To explain this surprising result we derive a new continuum theory that can account for the development of the symmetry broken state and belongs to the same universality class as the discrete SPP model.

Abstract:This paper studies unidirectional pedestrian flow by using a lattice gas model with parallel update rules. Game theory is introduced to deal with conflicts that two or three pedestrians want to move into the same site. Pedestrians are either cooperators or defectors. The cooperators are gentle and the defectors are aggressive. Moreover, pedestrians could change their strategy. The fundamental diagram and the cooperator fraction at different system width W have been investigated in detail. It is found that a two-lane system exhibits a first-order phase transition while a multilane system does not. A microscopic mechanism behind the transition has been provided. Mean-field analysis is carried out to calculate the critical density of the transition as well as the probability of games at large value of W. The spatial distribution of pedestrians is investigated, which is found to be dependent (independent) on the initial cooperator fraction when W is small (large). Finally, the influence of the evolutionary game rule has been discussed.
Motion of active tracer in a lattice gas with cross-shaped particles

Abstract:We analyze the dynamics of an active tracer particle embedded in a thermal lattice gas. All particles are subject to exclusion up to third nearest neighbors on the square lattice, which leads to slow dynamics at high densities. For the case with no rotational diffusion of the tracer, we derive an analytical expression for the resulting drift velocity v of the tracer in terms of non-equilibrium density correlations involving the tracer particle and its neighbors, which we verify using numerical simulations. We show that the properties of the passive system alone do not adequately describe even this simple system of a single non-rotating active tracer. For large activity and low density, we develop an approximation for v. For the case where the tracer undergoes rotational diffusion independent of its neighbors, we relate its diffusion coefficient to the thermal diffusion coefficient and v. Finally we study dynamics where the rotation of the tracer is limited by the presence of neighboring particles. We find that the effect of this rotational locking may be quantitatively described in terms of a reduction of the rotation rate.

Abstract:We review theoretical models of individual motility as well as collective dynamics and pattern formation of active particles. We focus on simple models of active dynamics with a particular emphasis on nonlinear and stochastic dynamics of such self-propelled entities in the framework of statistical mechanics. Examples of such active units in complex physico-chemical and biological systems are chemically powered nano-rods, localized patterns in reaction-diffusion system, motile cells or macroscopic animals. Based on the description of individual motion of point-like active particles by stochastic differential equations, we discuss different velocity-dependent friction functions, the impact of various types of fluctuations and calculate characteristic observables such as stationary velocity distributions or diffusion coefficients. Finally, we consider not only the free and confined individual active dynamics but also different types of interaction between active particles. The resulting collective dynamical behavior of large assemblies and aggregates of active units is discussed and an overview over some recent results on spatiotemporal pattern formation in such systems is given.

Abstract:We discuss a simple deterministic lattice gas of locally interacting charged particles, for which we show coexistence of ballistic and diffusive transport. Both, the ballistic and the diffusive transport coefficients, specifically the Drude weight and the diffusion constant, respectively, are analytically computed for particular set of generalised Gibbs states and may independently vanish for appropriate values of thermodynamic parameters. Moreover, our analysis, based on explicit construction of the matrix representation of time-automorphism in a suitable basis of the algebra of local observables, allows for an exact computation of the dynamic structure factor and closed form solution of the inhomogeneous quench problem.

The random walk of intermittently self-propelled particles

Abstract:Motivated by various recent experimental findings, we propose a dynamical model of intermittently self-propelled particles: active particles that recurrently switch between two modes of motion, namely an active run-state and a turn state, in which self-propulsion is absent. The durations of these motility modes are derived from arbitrary waiting-time distributions. We derive the expressions for exact forms of transport characteristics like mean-square displacements and diffusion coefficients to describe such processes. Furthermore, the conditions for the emergence of sub- and superdiffusion in the long-time limit are presented. We give examples of some important processes that occur as limiting cases of our system, including run-and-tumble motion of bacteria, Lévy walks, hop-and-trap dynamics, intermittent diffusion and continuous time random walks.
