Abstract:Succeeding our previous finding about coherent interference of the resonant states of CO^- formed by the low-energy electron attachment [Phys. Rev. A 88, 012708 (2013)], here we provide more evidences of the coherent interference, in particular, we find the state configuration change in the interference with the increase of electron attachment energy by measuring the completely backward distributions of the O^- fragment ion of the temporary CO^- in an energy range 11.3-12.6 eV. Therefore, different pure states, namely, coherent resonances, can be formed when the close-lying resonant states are coherently superposed by a broad-band electron pulse.

Abstract:There are two molecular adsorption states of CO in the system. One is , with lower C - O frequency, and the other is , with higher C - O frequency. The latter is similar to that on a clean surface. The two states of CO are occupied sequentially during the exposure to CO. The C - O stretch frequency of both states shifts to a higher value with the exposure to CO and to a lower value with higher Cs precoverage. The electronic structure of the molecule is different from that of the molecule and is of the same character as CO in a tilted mode.

Abstract:Resonant vibrational and rotation-vibration excitation cross sections for electron-CO scattering are calculated in the 0-10 eV energy range for all 81 vibrational states of CO, assuming that the excitation occur via the 2{\Pi} shape resonance. Static exchange plus polarization calculations performed using the R-matrix method are used to estimate resonance positions and widths as functions of internuclear separation. The effects of nuclear motion are considered using a local complex potential model. Good agreement is obtained with available experimental data on excitation from the vibrational ground state. Excitation rates and cross sections are provided as a functions of the initial CO vibrational state for all ground state vibrational levels.

Abstract:Kinetic energy and angular distributions of O$^-$ ions formed by dissociative electron attachment to CO molecule have been studied for 9, 9.5, 10, 10.5, 11, 11.5 eV incident electron energies around the resonance using time sliced velocity map imaging spectrometer. Detailed observations clearly show two separate DEA reactions lead to the formation of O$^{-}$ ions in the ground $^{2}P$ state along with the neutral C atoms in ground $^{3}P$ state and first excited $^{1}D$ state, respectively. Within the axial recoil approximation and involving four partial waves, our angular distribution results clearly indicate that the two reactions leading to O$^{-}$ formation proceed through the distinct resonant state(s). For the first process, more than one intermediate states are involved. Whereas, for the second process, only one state is involved. The observed forward-backward asymmetry is explained due to the interference between the different partial waves that are involved in the processes.

Abstract:A technique for measuring photoionization time delays with attosecond precision is combined with calculations of photoionization matrix elements to demonstrate how multi-electron dynamics affect photoionization time delays in carbon dioxide. Electron correlation is observed to affect the time delays through two mechanisms: autoionization of molecular Rydberg states and accelerated escape from a continuum shape resonance.

Abstract:Threshold structures, reminiscent of those seen in the polar hydrogen halides, have recently been observed in the cross sections for electron impact excitation of certain vibrational levels of the nonpolar CO2 molecule. These structures occur at energies outside the range where shape resonances dominate the dynamics. We propose a virtual state model that describes the multidimensional nuclear dynamics during the collision and explains quantitatively the selectivity observed in the excitation of the Fermi dyad, as well as the pattern of threshold peaks and oscillations seen in the upper levels of the higher polyads.
Flipping electric dipole in the vibrational wave packet dynamics of carbon monoxide

Abstract:Recently Rydberg atom-ion bound states have been observed using a high resolution ion microscope (Nature 605, 453 (2022)) and the corresponding vibrational dynamics has been spectroscopically analyzed. The atom-ion bond is created by an avoided crossing, which involves a flipping molecular dipole. Motivated by the discovery of this binding mechanism we address here the question whether a similar behavior can also occur for ground state diatomic molecules. Specifically, we investigate the vibrational wave packet dynamics within the $^1\Sigma^+_g$ electronic ground-state of carbon monoxide (CO), which shows a zero crossing of its dipole moment function close to its equilibrium. Via time-evolution of coherent states we demonstrate that indeed a flipping dipole is obtained and its dynamics can be controlled to some extent. Varying the coherent state parameter we explore different regions of the vibrational excitation spectrum thereby tuning the time scales of the rapid oscillatory motion of the relevant observables, their decay and revivals as well as the transition to a regime of irregular dynamics.

Abstract:The absorption spectrum of CO$_2$ in the wavelength range 120\,nm --- 160\,nm is analyzed by means of quantum mechanical calculations performed using vibronically coupled PESs of five singlet valence electronic states and the coordinate dependent transition dipole moment vectors. The thermally averaged spectrum, calculated for T=190\,K via Boltzmann averaging of optical transitions from many initial rotational states, accurtely reproduces the experimental spectral envelope, consisting of a low and a high energy band, the positions of the absorption maxima, their FWHMs, peak intensities, and frequencies of diffuse structures in each band. Contributions of the vibronic interactions due to Renner-Teller coupling, conical intersections, and the Herzberg-Teller effect are isolated and the calculated bands are assigned in terms of adiabatic electronic states. Finally, diffuse structures in the calculated bands are vibronically assigned using wave functions of the underlying resonance states. It is demonstrated that the main progressions in the high energy band correspond to consecutive excitations of the pseudorotational motion along the closed loop of the CI seam, and progressions differ in the number of nodes along the radial mode perpendicular to the closed seam. Irregularity of the diffuse peaks in the low energy band is interpreted as a manifestation of the carbene-type ćyclic' OCO minimum.

Abstract:The interaction potential between Li+ and CO has been investigated using quantum dynamical calculations. The ab initio ground electronic potential energy surface has been computed using the aug-cc-pVQZ basis set at MRCI level of accuracy. Quantum dynamics results within the VCC-RIOSA framework have been presented at collision energy E c.m. = 3.64 eV. The computed differential cross sections (DCS) for the inelastic vibrational excitations have been found to be in qualitative agreement with those obtained in the experiments of Böttner et al. (1976). Other attributes like rotationally-summed state-to-state DCS, and integral cross sections, are also calculated. The rotational excitations are studied using rigid-rotor coupled-states methodology at E c.m. = 4.23 eV showing excitations up to j ′ = 40. Rotational excitations rates at very low collision energy range (E c.m. = 0–300 cm−1) using rigid-rotor full close-coupling method have also been calculated in view of their astrophysical significance.

Abstract:State-by-state cross sections for dissociative electron attachment and electron-impact dissociation for molecular oxygen are computed using ab initio resonance curves calculated with the R-matrix method. When O2 is in its vibrational ground state, the main contribution for both processes comes from the $^2\Pi_u$ resonance state of $O_2^-$ but with a significant contribution from the $^4\Sigma$ resonant state. Vibrational excitation leads to an increased contribution from the low-lying $^2\Pi_{g}$ resonance, greatly increased cross sections for both processes, and the threshold moving to lower energies. These results provide important input for models of O2-containing plasmas in nonequilibrium conditions.

Abstract:Quasi-classical trajectory studies have been carried out for the HO + CO → H + CO2 reaction and H + CO2 inelastic collision on a recently developed global potential energy surface based on a large number of high-level ab initio points. The CO2 vibrational state distributions for these processes have been determined using an original normal-mode analysis method. It was found that the CO2 product of the reaction is highly excited in both the Fermi-linked bending and symmetric stretching modes, but little population was found in the antisymmetric stretching mode. The substantial excitation of the CO2 vibration, while consistent with the geometry of the transition state in the exit channel, is in disagreement with available experimental data. For the inelastic collision, the CO2 is much less excited despite much higher total energies. In addition, excitations in all vibrational modes were found, in good agreement with experiment.

Abstract:High-level ab initio electronic structure analysis of correlated lanthanide- and actinide-based species is laborious to perform and consequently limited in the literature. In the present work, the ground and electronically excited states of LaCO and AcCO molecules were explored utilizing the multireference configuration interaction (MRCI), Davidson corrected MRCI (MRCI+Q), and coupled cluster singles doubles and perturbative triples [CCSD(T)] quantum chemical tools conjoined with correlation consistent triple-ζ and quadruple-ζ quality Douglas-Kroll (DK) basis sets. The full potential energy curves (PECs), dissociation energies (Des), excitation energies (Tes), bond lengths (res), harmonic vibrational frequencies (ωe¬¬s), and chemical bonding patterns of low-lying electronic states of LaCO and AcCO are introduced. The ground electronic state of LaCO is a 4Σ- (1σ11π2) which is a product of the reaction between excited La(4F) versus CO(X1Σ+), whereas the ground state of AcCO is a 12Π (1σ21π1) deriving from ground state fragments Ac(2D)+CO(X1Σ+). The spin-orbit ground states of LaCO (14Σ-3/2) and AcCO (12Π1/2) bear ~13 and 5 kcal/mol D0 values, respectively. At the MRCI level, the spin-orbit curves, the spin-orbit mixing, and the Tes of spin-orbit states of LaCO and AcCO were also analyzed. Lastly, the density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed applying 16 exchange-correlation functionals that span five rungs of "Jacob's ladder" of DFA to assess DFT errors associated on the De and ionization energy (IE) of LaCO.

Abstract:Energy transfer between vibrational modes can be quite facile, and it has been proposed as the dominant mechanism for energy pooling in extreme environments such as nonthermal plasmas and laser cavities. To understand such processes, we perform quasi-classical trajectory studies of CO(v) + CO(v) collisions on a new full-dimensional potential energy surface fit to high-level ab initio data using a neural network method and examine the key vibrational energy transfer channels. In addition to the highly efficient CO(v + 1) + CO(v − 1) channel, there exists a significant, sometimes dominant, CO(v + 2) + CO(v − 2) channel for large v states at low collision energies. The latter is shown to stem from the substantially increased interaction between highly vibrationally excited CO, which has a much larger dipole moment than at its equilibrium bond length. Finally, the vibrational state-specific cross sections and their energy dependence on the thermal range are predicted from a limited dataset using Gaussian process regression. The relevance of these results to plasma chemistry and laser engineering and the recently observed flipping of highly vibrationally excited CO adsorbates on a cold NaCl surface is discussed.

Abstract:Full-dimensional quantum dynamics studies of the photodetachment of HCO2- and DCO2- are reported using a wave-packet Method on an accurate global potential energy surface of the neutral HOCO/HCO2 system. The Calculated phothelectron spectra reproduced both the positions and Widths of the main HCO2 and DCO2 peaks observed:in experiment. Specifically, both the (2)A(1) and B-2(2) resonance peaks of the neutral radicals were identified in our simulations thanks to the adiabatic PES that captures both the (2)A(1) and B-2(2) minima. The narrow widths and isotope effect of the lowest resonances are indicative of tunneling-facilitated predissociation. Furthermore, the dissociation product CO2 was found to be excited in both its symmetric stretching and bending modes, which are coupled Via a strong Fermi resonance, but rotationally cold, in good agreement with the recent photoelectron-photodetachment coincidence experiments.

Abstract:Hot electrons created by femtosecond laser pulses can transiently increase the occupation of the antibonding 2 pi* orbital of a diatomic adsorbate and change its bonding configuration. By monitoring the intramolecular stretch frequency of CO and NO on Ir{111} with time-resolved sum frequency spectroscopy, we demonstrate how the vibrational dynamics depend on the degree of charge flow between the surface and the adsorbate. We find CO and NO to be model adsorbates for adiabatic and nonadiabatic dynamics, respectively.

Abstract:Vibrational-excitation cross sections of ground electronic state of carbon dioxide molecule by electron-impact through the CO2-(2\Pi) shape resonance is considered in the separation of the normal modes approximation. Resonance curves and widths are computed for each vibrational mode. The calculations assume decoupling between normal modes and employ the local complex potential model for the treatment of the nuclear dynamics, usually adopted for the electron-scattering involving diatomic molecules. Results are presented for excitation up to 10 vibrational levels in each mode and comparison with data present in the literature is discussed.

Abstract:The potential energy surface for the electronic ground state of the CO2 molecule was optimized by using the self-consistent field-configuration interaction method and involving the 49 observed vibrational energy levels below 20 000 cm(-1). The root-mean-square error of this fitting is 1.50 cm(-1). The rovibrational energy levels for the Sigma and Pi vibrational states are calculated to test the refined potential.

Abstract:We have investigated vibrational excitation of physisorbed ${\mathrm{O}}_{2}$ by electron impact in the 4--14-eV range, where a single broad resonance is observed in gas-phase studies. We show that by orienting the molecule in two different alignments on the surface of graphite it is possible to selectively populate two different negative-ion resonance states in this energy range, the $^{4}\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Sigma}}_{\mathit{u}}$ state (at \ensuremath{\sim}8.5 eV) and the $^{2}\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Pi}}_{\mathit{u}}$ state (at \ensuremath{\sim}6 eV), each of which leads to molecular vibrational excitation. Calculations show that this selective resonance population arises from the distinctive differential electron-capture cross sections of the two molecular states, into which electrons are ``fed'' by the surrounding surface structure.
