Abstract:<p>Lead‐based halide perovskites have received great attention in light‐emitting applications due to their excellent properties, including high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY), tunable emission wavelength, and facile solution preparation. In spite of excellent characteristics, the presence of toxic element lead directly obstructs their further commercial development. Hence, exploiting lead‐free halide perovskite materials with superior properties is urgent and necessary. In this review, the deep‐seated reasons that benefit light emission for halide perovskites, which help to develop lead‐free halide perovskites with excellent performance, are first emphasized. Recent advances in lead‐free halide perovskite materials (single crystals, thin films, and nanocrystals with different dimensionalities) from synthesis, crystal structures, optical and optoelectronic properties to applications are then systematically summarized. In particular, phosphor‐converted LEDs and electroluminescent LEDs using lead‐free halide perovskites are fully examined. Ultimately, based on current development of lead‐free halide perovskites, the future directions of lead‐free halide perovskites in terms of materials and light‐emitting devices are discussed.</p>

Abstract:Halide perovskites have swiftly been elevated to a subject worthy of serious and extensive research. They are unequivocally an unprecedented class of semiconductors with a broad range of optoelectronic applications. These materials display outstanding properties, which are the results of their direct and tunable band gap, high electron/hole mobility, strong light-absorption coefficient, and high defect tolerance coupled with low non-radiative recombination rates. Their preparation is also extremely easy and compatible with room-temperature deposition processes. Nonetheless, the toxic nature of lead (Pb and its ions) and the poor stability against moisture, limit their mass production and commercialization. This article thoroughly reviews the recent investigations undertaken to solve these thorny problems by focusing mainly on the structural development and the photoluminescence tuning ability of lead-free perovskite nanocrystals (NCs). In the light of the principles related to crystal chemistry, we present the development of perovskite NCs from mineral prototypes, which leads to a variety of multi component Pb2+-free perovskite type compounds. Then, assuming that the ultimate goal is the production of a single-component white-light emission device, we shed light on the development of broadly tunable Pb2+-free perovskite NCs with intrinsic emission as well as extrinsic emission achieved by doping with various ions, and on the corresponding energy transfer (ET) mechanism, which governs the color and the photoluminescence emission tuning ability. Abstract:Nanocrystals of Cs2SnX6 (X = Cl, Br, Br0.5I0.5, and I) have been prepared by a simple, optimized, hot-injection method, reporting for the first time the synthesis of Cs2SnCl6, Cs2SnBr6, and mixed Cs2Sn(I0.5Br0.5)6 nanocrystalline samples. They all show a cubic crystal structure with a linear scaling of lattice parameter by changing the halide size. The prepared nanocrystals have spherical shape with average size from 3 to 6 nm depending on the nature of the halide and span an emission range from 444 nm (Cs2SnCl6) to 790 nm (Cs2SnI6) with a further modulation provided by mixed Br/I systems.
Organic Lead Halide Nanocrystals Providing an Ultra-Wide Color Gamut with Almost-Unity Photoluminescence Quantum Yield

Abstract:The most attractive aspect of perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) for optoelectronic applications is their widely tunable emission wavelength, but it has been quite challenging to tune it without sacrificing the photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY). In this work, we report a facile ligand-optimized ion-exchange (LOIE) method to convert room-temperature spray-synthesized, perovskite parent NCs that emit a saturated green color to NCs capable of emitting colors across the entire visible spectrum. These NCs exhibited exceptionally stable and high PLQYs, particularly for the pure blue (96%) and red (93%) primary colors that are indispensable for display applications. Surprisingly, the blue- and red-emissive NCs obtained using the LOIE method preserved the cubic shape and cubic phase structure that they inherited from their parent NCs, while exhibiting high crystallinity and high color-purity. Together with the parent green-emissive NCs, the obtained blue- and red-emissive NCs provided a very wide color gamut, corresponding to a Digital Cinema Initiatives-P3 of 140% or an International Telecommunication Union Recommendation BT.2020 of 102%. With the superior optical merits of these LOIE-manipulated NCs, a corresponding color conversion luminescence device provided a high external quantum efficiency (10.5%) and extremely high brightness (970 000 cd/m<sup>2</sup>). Abstract:In recent years, there have been rapid advances in the synthesis of lead halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) for use in solar cells, light emitting diodes, lasers, and photodetectors. These compounds have a set of intriguing optical, excitonic, and charge transport properties, including outstanding photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) and tunable optical band gap. However, the necessary inclusion of lead, a toxic element, raises a critical concern for future commercial development. To address the toxicity issue, intense recent research effort has been devoted to developing lead-free halide perovskite (LFHP) NCs. In this Review, we present a comprehensive overview of currently explored LFHP NCs with an emphasis on their crystal structures, synthesis, optical properties, and environmental stabilities (e.g., UV, heat, and moisture resistance). In addition, strategies for enhancing optical properties and stabilities of LFHP NCs as well as the state-of-the-art applications are discussed. With the perspective of their properties and current challenges, we provide an outlook for future directions in this rapidly evolving field to achieve high-quality LFHP NCs for a broader range of fundamental research and practical applications.
Lead-free, luminescent perovskite nanocrystals obtained through ambient condition synthesis

Abstract:Heterovalent substitution of toxic lead is an increasingly popular design strategy to obtain environmentally sustainable variants of the exciting material class of halide perovskites. Perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) obtained through solution-based methods exhibit exceedingly high optical quality. Unfortunately, most of these synthesis routes still require reaction under inert gas and at very high temperatures. Herein we present a novel synthesis routine for lead-free double perovskite NCs. We combine hot injection and ligand-assisted reprecipitation (LARP) methods to achieve a low-temperature and ambient atmosphere-based synthesis for manganese-doped Cs_{2}NaBiCl_{6} NCs. Mn incorporation is critical for the otherwise non-emissive material, with a 9:1 Bi:Mn precursor ratio maximizing the bright orange photoluminescence (PL) and quantum yield (QY). Higher temperatures slightly increased the material's performance, yet NCs synthesized at room temperature were still emissive, highlighting the versatility of the synthetic approach. Furthermore, the NCs show excellent long-term stability in ambient conditions, facilitating additional investigations and energy-related applications.

Abstract:The preparation of highly efficient perovskite nanocrystal light-emitting diodes is shown. A new trimethylaluminum vapor-based crosslinking method to render the nanocrystal films insoluble is applied. The resulting near-complete nanocrystal film coverage, coupled with the natural confinement of injected charges within the perovskite crystals, facilitates electron-hole capture and give rise to a remarkable electroluminescence yield of 5.7%.

Abstract:The colloidal cesium lead halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) have attracted much attention over the past five years as a promising class of material with potential application in wide-color-gamut backlight display because of their high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) and narrow-band emission (full-width at half-maximum, FWHM < 35 nm). To controllably synthesize perovskite NCs, the effects of reaction temperature and reaction time on structure, morphology, particle size and photoluminescence (PL) properties of the NCs were systematically investigated inthis article. Based on these results, the formation kinetics of the perovskite NCs was analyzed and disclosed in further. Finally, a white light-emitting diode (WLED) was prepared by using synthesized CsPbBr3 NCs and K2SiF6:Mn4+ phosphors as the color converters. The WLED exhibits the bright white emission with a CIE chromaticity coordinate of (0.389, 0.376) and a wide color gamut of 123% of NTSC, indicating a potential application in the field of wide color gamut displays in the future.

Abstract:Compared with conventional semiconductors, halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) have a unique crystal structure and outstanding optoelectronic properties, offering wide potential for applications in optoelectronic devices such as solar cells, photodetectors, light-emitting diodes, lasers, and displays. Rational technological design is providing vital support for the development of perovskite optoelectronics. Herein, monodisperse all-inorganic halide perovskite nanocrystals with consistent morphology and cubic crystal phase were synthesized employing a modified one-pot hot injection method to independently modulate the stoichiometric ratios of three precursors involving cesium salt, lead source, and halide. In combination with an anion exchange reaction, mixing two kinds of perovskite NCs with different halogens enables a transition from violet emission to green and finally to red emission over the entire visible region. Additionally, optical and electrochemical tests suggested that the as-synthesized halide perovskite NCs are promising for photoelectric catalysis applications.

Abstract:Lead halide perovskites (LHPs) of the general formula APbX3 (A=Cs+, CH3NH3+, or CH(NH2)2+; X=Cl, Br, or I) have recently emerged as a unique class of low-cost, versatile semiconductors of high optoelectronic quality. These materials offer exceptionally facile solution-based engineerability in the form of bulk single crystals, thin films, or supported and unsupported nanostructures. The lattermost form, especially as colloidal nanocrystals (NCs), holds great promise as a versatile photonic source, operated via bright photoluminescence (PL) in displays or lighting (energy down-conversion of blue light into green and red), or via electroluminescence in light-emitting diodes. In this article we discuss the recent history of the development of highly-luminescent NCs of LHPs, the current state-of-the-art of this class of materials, and the future prospects of this highly active research field. We also report the demonstration of long-range ordered, self-organized superlattice structures obtained from cube-shaped colloidal CsPbBr3NCs using drying-mediated self-assembly.

Abstract:The toxicity of lead ions has become the severe challenge for the all-inorganic lead halide perovskite materials, although some works have reported the lead-free perovskite nanocrystals (NCs), the photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of these materials is still not unsatisfactory. Meanwhile, because the halogen ions can be easily exchanged, the controllable multicolor emission in perovskite NCs is difficult to realize in current reports. In this work, we introduced lanthanide ions into lead-free Cs3Sb2Cl9 perovskite NCs. Benefitting from the energy transfer between Cs3Sb2Cl9 perovskite NC host and lanthanide ions, the multicolor emission was realized. Based on controlling the doping concentration of Tb3+ and Eu3+ ions, the white light emission under UV excitation would be turned easily in the Tb3+/Eu3+ codoped NCs. In addition, efficient energy transfer from perovskite NCs to Tb3+ or Eu3+ ions is beneficial to improving the optical properties of lead-free perovskite NCs, resulting in maximum PLQYs of red, green and white light emission of 22.6%, 19.7% and 28.5%, respectively. Finally, a white light emitting device (WLED) was fabricated with a power efficiency of 18.5 lm/W, which presents the Commission Internationale de l’Eclairage (CIE) of (0.33, 0.35).

Abstract:Metal halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs), as a new class of light-emitting and light-harvesting materials, have recently attracted intensive attention for an impressive variety of optoelectronic applications. However, the lead toxicity and poor stability of such materials severely restrict their practical applications and future commercialization. Lead-free perovskite NCs and their derivatives, designed by the reasonable chemical substitution of Pb with other nontoxic elements, are recently booming as an attractive alternative to lead-based counterparts. In this review, we firstly present a comprehensive overview of currently explored lead-free perovskite NCs with an emphasis on their design routes, morphologies, optoelectronic properties, and environmental stability issues. Then, we discuss the preliminary achievements of lead-free perovskite NCs in versatile optoelectronic applications, such as light-emitting devices, solar cells, photodetectors, and photocatalysis. We finish this review with a critical outlook into the currently existing challenges and possible development opportunities of this rapidly evolving field.

Abstract:Metal halide perovskites are essential materials with great potential for use in optoelectronic devices, such as solar cells, flat-panel displays, solid-state lighting, and detectors, because of the low-cost production through easy processing and the tunable-color emission with narrow line-widths and high photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs). Lead-halide perovskites manifest high-performance but they suffer from toxicity and poor stability. The stability of the perovskites can be enhanced by reducing dimensionality, doping with transition metals or rare-earth ions, encapsulation of organic polymers, or constructing super-hydrophobic structures. Yet, the obtained stability does not meet the requirements for practical applications. Nanocrystals (NCs) of lead-free metal-halide perovskites are considered as attractive alternatives, on account of their low toxicity, excellent optical characteristics, and promising stability. In this review article, we thoroughly report on the recent progress regarding the development of structure and compositions, surface chemistry, synthesis process, and potential optical characteristics of the lead-free metal-halide perovskite NCs with a strict perovskite structure as well as on their stability and reliability in the light of their potential use in various optoelectronic devices. We also discuss the challenges in this promising field and propose interesting perspectives for further investigation on lead-free halide-perovskite NCs in order to improve the efficiency and the lifetime of devices.
