Abstract:We use Lagrangian specialization to compute the degree of the Gauss map on Theta divisors with transversal $\mathrm{A}_1$ singularities. This computes the Gauss degree for a general abelian variety in the loci $\mathcal{A}^\delta_{t,g-t}$ that form some of the irreducible components of the Andreotti-Mayer loci. We also prove that the first coefficient of the Lagrangian specialization is the Samuel multiplicity of the singular locus.

Abstract:We prove that the tropical Abel--Prym map $\Psi\colon \tGa\to\Prym(\tGa/\Ga)$ associated with a free double cover $\pi\colon \tGa\to \Ga$ of hyperelliptic metric graphs is harmonic of degree $2$ in accordance with the already established algebraic result. We then prove a partial converse. Contrary to the analogous algebraic result, when the source graph of the double cover is not hyperelliptic, the Abel--Prym map is often not injective. When the source graph is hyperelliptic, we show that the Abel--Prym graph $\Psi(\tGa)$ is a hyperelliptic metric graph of genus $g_{\Ga}-1$ whose Jacobian is isomorphic, as pptav, to the Prym variety of the cover. En route, we count the number of distinct free double covers by hyperelliptic metric graphs.

Abstract:For $r\geq 3$ and $g= \frac{r(r+1)}{2}$, we study the Prym-Brill-Noether variety $V^r(C,\eta)$ associated to Prym curves $[C,\eta]$. The locus $\mathcal{R}_g^r$ in $\mathcal{R}_g$ parametrizing Prym curves $(C, \eta)$ with nonempty $V^r(C,\eta)$ is a divisor. We compute some key coefficients of the class $[\overline{\mathcal{R}}_g^r]$ in $\mathrm{Pic}_\mathbb{Q}(\overline{\mathcal{R}}_g)$. Furthermore, we examine a strongly Brill-Noether divisor in $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g-1,2}$: we show its irreducibility and compute some of its coefficients in $\mathrm{Pic}_\mathbb{Q}(\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g-1,2})$. As a consequence of our results, the moduli space $\mathcal{R}_{14,2}$ is of general type.

Abstract:We prove that the $k$-th Gaussian map $\gamma^k_{H}$ is surjective on a polarized unnodal Enriques surface $(S, H)$ with $\phi(H)>2k+4$. In particular, as a consequence, when $\phi(H)>4(k+2)$, we obtain the surjectivity of the $k$-th Gauss-Prym map $\gamma^k_{\omega_C\otimes\alpha}$ on smooth hyperplane sections $C\in \vert H\vert.$ In case $k=1$ it is sufficient to ask $\phi(H)>6$.

A matroidal perspective on the tropical Prym variety

Abstract:We associate a matroid $M(\widetilde{\Gamma}/\Gamma)$ to a harmonic double cover $\pi:\widetilde{\Gamma}\to \Gamma$ of metric graphs. The matroid $M(\widetilde{\Gamma}/\Gamma)$ is a geometric interpretation of Zaslavsky's signed graphic matroid. We show that the principalization $\mathrm{Prym}_p(\widetilde{\Gamma}/\Gamma)$ of the tropical Prym variety of the double cover can be reconstructed from $M(\widetilde{\Gamma}/\Gamma)$, equipped with certain additional decorations. We describe the simplification of the matroid $M(\widetilde{\Gamma}/\Gamma)$ and show that the Prym variety does not change under simplification.

Abstract:We give some conditions on a family of abelian covers of ${\mathbb P}^1$ of genus $g$ curves, that ensure that the family yields a subvariety of ${\mathsf A}_g$ which is not totally geodesic, hence it is not Shimura. As a consequence, we show that for any abelian group $G$, there exists an integer $M$ which only depends on $G$ such that if $g >M$, then the family yields a subvariety of ${\mathsf A}_g$ which is not totally geodesic. We prove then analogous results for families of abelian covers of ${\tilde C}_t \rightarrow {\mathbb P}^1 = {\tilde C}_t/{\tilde G}$ with an abelian Galois group ${\tilde G}$ of even order, proving that under some conditions, if $\sigma \in {\tilde G}$ is an involution, the family of Pryms associated with the covers ${\tilde C}_t \rightarrow C_t= {\tilde C}_t/\langle \sigma \rangle$ yields a subvariety of ${\mathsf A}_{p}^{\delta}$ which is not totally geodesic. As a consequence, we show that if ${\tilde G} =({\mathbb Z}/N{\mathbb Z})^m$ with $N$ even, and $\sigma$ is an involution in ${\tilde G}$, there exists an integer $M(N)$ which only depends on $N$ such that, if ${\tilde g} = g({\tilde C}_t) > M(N)$, then the subvariety of the Prym locus in ${\mathsf A}^{\delta}_{p}$ induced by any such family is not totally geodesic (hence it is not Shimura).

On the Prym map for cyclic covers of genus two curves

Abstract:The Prym map assigns to each covering of curves a polarized abelian variety. In the case of unramified cyclic covers of curves of genus two, we show that the Prym map is ramified precisely on the locus of bielliptic covers. The key observation is that we can naturally associate to such a cover an abelian surface with a cyclic polarization, and then the codifferential of the Prym map can be interpreted in terms of multiplication of sections on the abelian surface. Furthermore, we give a different proof of a result by Ramanan that a genus two cyclic cover of degree sufficiently high is never hyperelliptic.

Abstract:In the paper we consider the Jacobian locus $\overline{J_g}$ and the Prym locus $\overline{P_{g+1}}$, in the moduli space $A_g$ of principally polarized abelian varieties of dimension $g$, for $g\geq 7$, and we study the extrinsic geometry of $\overline{J_g}\subset \overline{P_{g+1}}$, under the inclusion provided by the theory of generalized Prym varieties as introduced by Beauville. More precisely, we study certain geodesic curves with respect to the Siegel metric of $A_g$, starting at a Jacobian variety $[JC]\in A_g$ of a curve $[C]\in M_g$ and with direction $\zeta\in T_{[JC]}J_g$. We prove that for a general $JC$, any geodesic of this kind is not contained in $\overline{J_g}$ and even in $\overline{P_{g+1}}$, if $\zeta$ has rank $k<\Cliff C-3$, where $\Cliff C$ denotes the Clifford index of $C$.

General birationality and Hyperelliptic Theta divisors

Abstract:We first state a condition ensuring that having a birational map onto the image is an open property for families of irreducible normal non uniruled varieties. We give then some criteria to ensure general birationality for a family of rational maps, via specializations. Among the applications is a new proof of a result obtained jointly with Luca Cesarano: that, for a general pair $(A,X)$ of an (ample) Hypersurface $X$ in an Abelian Variety $A$, the canonical map $\Phi_X$ of $X$ is birational onto its image if the polarization given by $X$ is not principal. The proof is also based on a careful study of the Theta divisors of the Jacobians of Hyperelliptic curves, and some related geometrical constructions. We investigate these here also in view of their beauty and of their independent interest, as they lead to a description of the rings of Hyperelliptic theta functions.

Abstract:The primitive cohomology of the theta divisor of a principally polarized abelian variety of dimension $g$ is a Hodge structure of level $g-3$. The Hodge conjecture predicts that it is contained in the image, under the Abel-Jacobi map, of the cohomology of a family of curves in the theta divisor. In this paper we use the Prym map to show that this version of the Hodge conjecture is true for the theta divisor of a general abelian fivefold.

Abstract:We show that for every g greater or equal than 5, the locus of Prym varieties in the moduli space of principally polarized abelian varieties of dimension g-1 that possess a pseudoreflection of geometric origin is the union of three different non-empty explicit irreducible families. This is in stark contrast to the loci of Jacobian varieties that possess a pseudoreflection of geometric origin, which is empty for any genus greater than 3. In g=6, a distinguished example of Prym varieties with a pseudoreflection is given by intermediate Jacobians of cubic threefolds that possess an Eckardt point.

Abstract:Abstract In this paper, using a generalization of the notion of Prym variety for covers of projective varieties, we prove a structure theorem for the Mordell–Weil group of abelian varieties over function fields that are twists of abelian varieties by Galois covers of smooth projective varieties. In particular, the results we obtain contribute to the construction of Jacobians of high rank.

On the geometric degree of the tangent bundle of a smooth algebraic variety

Abstract:We present bounds for the geometric degree of the tangent bundle and the tangential variety of a smooth affine algebraic variety $V$ in terms of the geometric degree of $V$. We first analyze the case of curves, showing an explicit relation between these degrees. In addition, for parametric curves, we obtain upper bounds that are linear in the degree of the given curve. In the case of varieties of arbitrary dimension, we prove general upper bounds for the degrees of the tangent bundle and the tangential variety of $V$ that are exponential in the dimension or co-dimension of $V$, and a quadratic upper bound that holds for varieties defined by generic polynomials. Finally, we characterize the smooth irreducible varieties with a tangent bundle of minimal degree.

Local structure of theta divisors and related loci of generic curves

Abstract:For a generic compact Riemann surface the theta function is at every point on the Jacobian equal to its first Taylor term, up to a holomorphic change of local coordinates and multiplication by a local holomorphic unit. More generally, any Brill-Noether locus of twisted stable vector bundles on a smooth projective curve is at every point L locally étale isomorphic with its tangent cone if the Petri map at L is injective. This assumption has various consequences for Brill-Noether loci: positive answers to the monodromy conjecture for generalized theta divisors and to questions of Schnell-Yang on log resolutions and Whitney stratifications, and formulas for local b-functions, log canonical thresholds, topological zeta functions, and minimal discrepancies.

Abstract:In this paper we study higher even Gaussian maps of the canonical bundle on hyperelliptic curves and we determine their rank, giving explicit descriptions of their kernels. Then we use this descriptions to investigate the hyperelliptic Torelli map $j_h$ and its second fundamental form. We study isotropic subspaces of the tangent space $T_{{\mathcal H}_g, [C]}$ to the moduli space ${\mathcal H}_g$ of hyperelliptic curves of genus $g$ at a point $[C]$, with respect to the second fundamental form $\rho_{HE}$ of $j_h$. In particular, for any Weierstrass point $p \in C$, we construct a subspace $V_p$ of dimension $\lfloor\frac{g}{2} \rfloor$ of $T_{{\mathcal H}_g, [C]}$ generated by higher Schiffer variations at $p$, such that the only isotropic tangent direction $\zeta \in V_p$ for the image of $\rho_{HE}$ is the standard Schiffer variation $\xi_p$ at the Weierstrass point $p \in C$.

Abstract:A genus-g du Val curve is a degree-3g plane curve having 8 points of multiplicity g, one point of multiplicity g-1, and no other singularity. We prove that the corank of the Gauss-Wahl map of a general du Val curve of odd genus (>11) is equal to one. This, together with the results of [1], shows that the characterisation of Brill-Noether-Petri curves with non-surjective Gauss-Wahl map as hyperplane sections of K3 surfaces and limits thereof, obtained in [3], is optimal.

Abstract:We consider a new stratification of the space of configurations of $n$ marked points on the complex plane. Recall that this space can be differently interpreted as the space $^{\rm D}{\rm Pol}_{n}$ of degree $n>1$ complex, monic polynomials with distinct roots, the sum of which is 0. A stratum $A_{\sigma}$ is the set of polynomials having $P^{-1}(\mathbb{R}\cup\imath\mathbb{R})$ in the same isotopy class, relative to their asymptotic directions. We show that this stratification is a Goresky--MacPherson stratification and that from thickening strata a good cover in the sense of Čech can be constructed, allowing an explicit computation of the cohomology groups of this space.

Abstract:We consider cyclic unramified coverings of degree d of irreducible complex smooth genus curves and their corresponding Prym varieties. They provide natural examples of polarized abelian varieties with automorphisms of order d. The rich geometry of the associated Prym map has been studied in several papers, and the cases are quite well understood. Nevertheless, very little is known for higher values of d. In this paper, we investigate whether the covering can be reconstructed from its Prym variety, that is, whether the generic Prym Torelli theorem holds for these coverings. We prove this is so for the so-called Sophie Germain prime numbers, that is, for prime such that is also prime. We use results of arithmetic nature on -type abelian varieties combined with theta-duality techniques.
