Abstract:We prove three theorems in general relativity which rule out classical scalar hair of static, spherically symmetric, possibly electrically charged black holes. We first generalize Bekenstein's no--hair theorem for a multiplet of minimally coupled real scalar fields with not necessarily quadratic action to the case of a charged black hole. We then use a conformal map of the geometry to convert the problem of a charged (or neutral) black hole with hair in the form of a neutral self--interacting scalar field nonminimally coupled to gravity to the preceding problem, thus establishing a no--hair theorem for the cases with nonminimal coupling parameter $\xi<0$ or $\xi\geq {1\over 2}$. The proof also makes use of a causality requirement on the field configuration. Finally, from the required behavior of the fields at the horizon and infinity we exclude hair of a charged black hole in the form of a charged self--interacting scalar field nonminimally coupled to gravity for any $\xi$.

Abstract:We present a non-perturbative proof of the no hair theorems corresponding to scalar and Proca fields for stationary axisymmetric de Sitter black hole spacetimes. Our method also applies to asymptotically flat and under a reasonable assumption, to asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetimes.

Abstract:Scalar-tensor theories are a natural alternative to general relativity, as they may provide an effective dark energy phenomenology on cosmological scales while passing local tests, but their black hole solutions are still poorly understood. Here, we generalize existing no-hair theorems for spherical black holes and specific theories in the scalar-tensor class. We show that shift symmetry prevents the appearance of scalar hairs in rotating (asymptotically flat, stationary and axisymmetric) black holes for all theories in the Horndeski/beyond Horndeski/DHOST classes, but for those with a coupling between the scalar and the Gauss--Bonnet invariant. Our proof also applies to higher dimensions. We also compute the values of the scalar hair charges if shift symmetry and asymptotic flatness are violated by a time growth of the scalar field at infinity, under suitable regularity conditions at the event horizon.

Abstract:We prove a no charged scalar hair theorem for static black holes in de-Sitter spacetime in the region between the event horizon and the cosmological horizon. The proof does not depend on the assumption of spherical symmetry. It allows for general non-minimal coupling functions of the scalar field to gravity and electromagnetic fields, and for higher curvature term corrections to Einstein gravity. The extension to other asympitotic spacetimes is applicable by requiring appropriate boundary conditions. Our result excludes the possibility for spontaneous scalarization of charged scalar around static charged de-Sitter black holes.

Abstract:In this work we establish in a rigorous manner, and a model independent way, the conditions for bypassing Bekenstein's no-scalar-hair theorem for static, spherically symmetric, and asymptotically flat black holes, while maintaining the validity of the energy conditions. Specifically, we argue that a hidden assumption in the theorem, namely the vanishing of the quantity $\mathcal{G} = \mathcal{E} + T^\theta\!_\theta$, where $\mathcal{E}$ is the energy density and $T^\theta\!_\theta$ the corresponding component of the energy-momentum tensor of the scalar field theory, can be relaxed. Indeed, if $\mathcal{G}$ is positive, as a consequence of the assumption on the validity of the energy conditions, then scalar hair is potentially allowed in the black hole's exterior, consistently with the gravitational equations and the generic properties of the (non-trivial) energy momentum tensor. As an explicit example, in which such a behaviour is realised, we discuss the well known model of a (3+1)-dimensional Schwarzschild black hole coupled to a spontaneously broken Yang-Mills $SU (2)$ gauge theory interacting with a Higgs scalar. We present a rather novel approach to obtain analytical black hole solutions for this system (in contrast to the numerical ones in the existing literature) by applying an appropriate perturbative treatment whereby the black hole configuration is derived as a result of backreaction of Higgs and gauge fields onto an initially fixed flat spacetime. The massive nature of the scalar and gauge fields in this example requires a special treatment, because of their asymptotic form, which we discuss in some detail.

Abstract:By using the Taylor series and the solution-generating methods, we construct exact black hole solutions with minimally coupled scalar fields. We find that the black hole solutions can have many hairs except for the physical mass. These hairs come from the scalar potential. Different from the mass, there is no symmetry corresponding to these hairs. Thus they are not conserved and one cannot understand them as Noether charges. They arise as coupling constants. Although there are many hairs, the black hole has only one horizon. The scalar potential becomes negative for sufficient large (or in the vicinity of black hole singularity). Therefore, the no-scalar-hair theorem does not apply to our solutions since the latter do not obey the dominant energy condition. Although the scalar potential becomes negative for sufficient large , the black holes are stable to both odd parity and scalar perturbations. As for even parity perturbations, we find there remains parameter space for the stability of the black holes. Finally, the black hole thermodynamics is developed.

Abstract:The no-hair theorem by Mayo and Bekenstein states that there exists no non-extremal static and spherical charged black hole endowed with hair in the form of a charged scalar field with a self-interaction potential. In our recent work, we showed that the effect of a scalar mass term is important at an asymptotic infinity, which was omitted to prove the no-hair theorem. In this paper, we demonstrate that there actually exists static and spherical charged scalar hair, dubbed as Q-hair, around charged black holes, by taking into account the backreaction to the metric and gauge field. We also discuss that Q-cloud, which is constructed without the backreaction around a Reissner-Nordström black hole, is a good approximation to Q-hair under a certain limit.

Abstract:We show that the integral method used to prove the no-hair theorem for Black Holes (BH's) in spherically symmetric and static spacetimes within the framework of general relativity with matter composed by a complex-valued scalar-field does not lead to a straightforward conclusion about the absence of hair in the stationary and rotating (axisymmetric) scenario. We argue that such a failure can be used to justify in a simple and heuristic way the existence of non-trivial boson clouds or hair found numerically by Herdeiro and Radu [1,2] and analytically by Hod in the test field limit [3-5]. This is due to the presence of a contribution that is negative when rotation exists which allows for an integral to vanish even when a non-trivial boson hair is present. The presence of such a negative contribution that depends on the rotation properties of the BH is perfectly correlated with the eigenvalue problem associated with the boson-field equation. Conversely, when the rotation is absent the integral turns to be composed only by non negative (i.e. positive semidefinite) terms and thus the only way it can vanish is when the hair is completely absent. This analysis poses serious challenges and obstructions towards the elaboration of no-hair theorems for more general spacetimes endowed with a BH region even when including matter fields that obey the energy conditions. Thus rotating boson stars, if collapsed, may lead indeed to a new type of rotating BH, like the ones found in [1,2]. In order to achieve this analysis we solve numerically the eigenvalue problem for the boson field in the Kerr-BH background by imposing rigorous regularity conditions at the BH horizon for the non-extremal case ($0<a<M$) which include the near extremal one in the limit $M\rightarrow a$, as well as the small BH limit $M\rightarrow a\rightarrow 0$.

Abstract:We give a proof of the non-perturbative no hair theorems for a massive 2-form field with 3-form field strength for general stationary axisymmetric and static (anti)-de Sitter or asymptotically flat black hole spacetimes with some suitable geometrical properties. The generalization of this result for higher form fields is discussed. Next, we discuss the perturbative no hair theorems for massive spin-1/2 fields for general static backgrounds with electric or magnetic charge. Some generalization of this result for stationary axisymmetric spacetimes are also discussed. All calculations are done in arbitrary spacetime dimensions.

Abstract:We prove under certain weak assumptions a black hole no-hair theorem in spherically symmetric spacetimes for self-gravitating time-dependent multiple scalar fields with an arbitrary target space admitting a Killing field with a non-empty axis and arbitrary non-negative potential invariant under the flow of the Killing field. It is shown that for such configurations the only spherically symmetric and asymptotically flat black hole solutions consist of the Schwarzschild metric and a constant multi-scalar map. In due course of the proof we also unveil the intrinsic connection of the time-dependence of the scalar fields with the symmetries of the target space.

Abstract:Scalar fields coupled to the Gauss-Bonnet invariant evade the known no-hair theorems and have nontrivial configurations around black holes. We focus on a scalar field that couples linearly to the Gauss-Bonnet invariant and hence exhibits shift symmetry. We study its dynamical evolution and the formation of scalar hair in a Schwarzschild background. We show that the evolution eventually settles to the known static hairy solutions in the appropriate limit.

Abstract:The present thesis attempts to study the effect of scalar fields on Hawking radiation and quasinormal modes of black holes. We selected a static, spherically symmetric electrically charged black hole with an additional scalar 'hair' for our analysis. The scalar 'hair' is sourced by a scalar field, conformally coupled to the Einstein-Hilbert action. The scalar field can survive even in the absence of the black hole's electric charge and is characterized as a 'primary hair'. This scalar field changes the gravitational constant, and hence modifies the ADM (Arnowitt-Deser-Missner) mass of the black hole. The scalar field's strength is determined by a scalar 'charge' that manifests itself as an additive correction to the square of the electric charge in the standard Reissner-Nordström metric. This seemingly simple modification leads to nontrivial physical implications.

Abstract:We consider a gravitating system of vanishing cosmological constant consisting of an electromagnetic field and a scalar field coupled to the Einstein tensor. A Reissner-Nordström black hole undergoes a second-order phase transition to a hairy black hole of generally anisotropic hair at a certain critical temperature which we compute. The no-hair theorem is evaded due to the coupling between the scalar field and the Einstein tensor. Within a first order perturbative approach we calculate explicitly the properties of a hairy black hole configuration near the critical temperature and show that it is energetically favorable over the corresponding Reissner-Nordström black hole.

Abstract:The Israel–Carter theorem (also known as the "no-hair theorem") puts a restriction on the existence of parameters other than mass, electric charge, and angular momentum of a black hole. In this context, Bekenstein proposed no-hair theorems in various black hole models with neutral and electrically charged scalar fields. In this paper, we take the Einstein–Maxwell-charged scalar model with an electrically charged scalar field gauge-coupled to the Maxwell field surrounding a charged black hole with a static spherically symmetric metric. In particular, we consider a quadratic scalar potential without any higher order terms and we do not impose any restriction on the magnitude of the scalar charge with respect to the black hole charge. With this setting, we ascertain the validity of all energy conditions coupled with the causality condition, suggesting the possibility of existence of charged hairy solutions. Consequently, we obtain, by exact numerical integration, detailed solutions of the field equations that incorporate backreaction on the spacetime due to the presence of the charged scalar field. The solutions exhibit damped oscillatory behaviours for the charged scalar hair. We also find that the electric potential is a monotonic function of the radial coordinate, as required by electrodynamics. In order to ascertain the existence of our charged hairy solutions, we carry out dynamic stability analyses against time-dependant perturbations about the static solutions. For a definite conclusion, we employ two different methodologies. The first methodology involves a Sturm–Liouville equation, whereas the second methodology employs a Schrödinger-like equation, for the dynamic perturbations. We find that our solutions are stable against time-dependant perturbations by both methodologies, confirming the existence of the charged hairy solutions.

Abstract:We investigate the possibility of having hair on the cosmological horizon. The cosmological horizon shares similar properties of black hole horizons in the aspect of having hair on the horizon. For those theories admitting haired black hole solutions, the nontrivial matter fields may reach and extend beyond the cosmological horizon. For Q stars and boson stars, the matter fields cannot reach the cosmological horizon. The no short hair conjecture stays valid, despite the asymptotic behavior (de Sitter or anti–de Sitter) of black hole solutions. We prove the no scalar hair theorem for anti–de Sitter black holes. Using Bekenstein’s identity method, we also prove the no scalar hair theorem for de Sitter space and de Sitter black holes if the scalar potential is convex.
