Abstract:In this paper, some complex dynamics of one equivalence class of elementary cellular automata are characterized via symbolic dynamics on the space of bi-infinite symbolic sequences. By establishing a topologically conjugate relationship with a 2-order subshift of finite type of symbolic dynamical systems, it is rigorously proved that the four rules N=119, 63, 17, and 3 are topologically mixing on their global attractors. Meanwhile, it is shown that they are chaotic both in the sense of Li-Yorke and Devaney on their global attractors. Furthermore, the topological entropies of these rules on Sigma2 are computed.

Abstract:In this paper, the dynamical behaviors of elementary cellular automata (ECA) rule 88 are studied from the viewpoint of symbolic dynamics. Based on the results derived from the finite case, it is shown that there exist three different Bernoulli-measure subsystems of rule 88 in the space of bi-infinite symbolic sequences. The relationships of these three subsystems and the existence of fixed points are investigated, revealing that the union of them is not the global attractor of rule 88 under the bi-infinite case. Furthermore, the dynamical properties of topologically mixing and topological entropy of rule 88 are exploited on its subsystems. In addition, it is shown that rule 88, a member of Wolfram’s class II, possesses richer and more complicated dynamical behaviors in the space of bi-infinite sequences. Finally, it is noted that the method presented in this work is also applicable to study the dynamics of other ECA rules, especially the 112 Bernoulli-shift rules therein.
On Local Symmetries And Universality In Cellular Autmata

Abstract:Cellular automata (CA) are dynamical systems defined by a finite local rule but they are studied for their global dynamics. They can exhibit a wide range of complex behaviours and a celebrated result is the existence of (intrinsically) universal CA, that is CA able to fully simulate any other CA. In this paper, we show that the asymptotic density of universal cellular automata is 1 in several families of CA defined by local symmetries. We extend results previously established for captive cellular automata in two significant ways. First, our results apply to well-known families of CA (e.g. the family of outer-totalistic CA containing the Game of Life) and, second, we obtain such density results with both increasing number of states and increasing neighbourhood. Moreover, thanks to universality-preserving encodings, we show that the universality problem remains undecidable in some of those families.

Abstract:In this dissertation, we study temporally stochasticity in cellular automata and the behavior of such cellular automata. The work also explores the computational ability of such cellular automaton that illustrates the computability of solving the affinity classification problem. In addition to that, a cellular automaton, defined over Cayley tree, is shown as the classical searching problem solver. The proposed temporally stochastic cellular automata deals with two elementary cellular automata rules, say $f$ and $g$. The $f$ is the default rule, however, $g$ is temporally applied to the overall system with some probability $\tau$ which acts as a noise in the system. After exploring the dynamics of temporally stochastic cellular automata (TSCAs), we study the dynamical behavior of these temporally stochastic cellular automata (TSCAs) to identify the TSCAs that converge to a fixed point from any seed. We apply each of the convergent TSCAs to some standard datasets and observe the effectiveness of each TSCA as a pattern classifier. It is observed that the proposed TSCA-based classifier shows competitive performance in comparison with existing classifier algorithms. We use temporally stochastic cellular automata to solve a new problem in the field of cellular automata, named as, affinity classification problem which is a generalization of the density classification problem . We show that this model can be used in several applications, like modeling self-healing systems. Finally, we introduce a new model of computing unit developed around cellular automata to reduce the workload of the Central Processing Unit (CPU) of a machine to compute. Each cell of the computing unit acts as a tiny processing element with attached memory. Such a CA is implemented on the Cayley Tree to realize efficient solutions for diverse computational problems.

Abstract:Topological dynamics of cellular automata (CA), inherited from classical dynamical systems theory, has been essentially studied in dimension 1. This paper focuses on higher dimensional CA and aims at showing that the situation is different and more complex starting from dimension 2. The main results are the existence of non sensitive CA without equicontinuous points, the non-recursivity of sensitivity constants, the existence of CA having only non-recursive equicontinuous points and the existence of CA having only countably many equicontinuous points. They all show a difference between dimension 1 and higher dimensions. Thanks to these new constructions, we also extend undecidability results concerning topological classification previously obtained in the 1D case. Finally, we show that the set of sensitive CA is only Pi_2 in dimension 1, but becomes Sigma_3-hard for dimension 3.

A Comprehensive Taxonomy of Cellular Automata

Abstract:Cellular automata (CAs) are fully-discrete dynamical models that have received much attention due to the fact that their relatively simple setup can nonetheless express highly complex phenomena. Despite the model's theoretical maturity and abundant computational power, the current lack of a complete survey on the 'taxonomy' of various families of CAs impedes efficient and interdisciplinary progress. This review paper mitigates that deficiency; it provides a methodical overview of five important CA 'families': asynchronous, stochastic, multi-state, extended-neighbourhood, and non-uniform CAs. These five CA families are subsequently presented from four angles. First, a rigorous mathematical definition is given. Second, we map prominent variations within each CA family, as such highlighting mathematical equivalences with types from other families. Third, we discuss the genotype and phenotype of these CA types by means of mathematical tools, indicating when established tools break down. Fourth, we conclude each section with a brief overview of applications related to information theory and mathematical modelling.

Abstract:We show techniques of analyzing complex dynamics of cellular automata (CA) with chaotic behaviour. CA are well known computational substrates for studying emergent collective behaviour, complexity, randomness and interaction between order and chaotic systems. A number of attempts have been made to classify CA functions on their space-time dynamics and to predict behaviour of any given function. Examples include mechanical computation, \lambda{} and Z-parameters, mean field theory, differential equations and number conserving features. We aim to classify CA based on their behaviour when they act in a historical mode, i.e. as CA with memory. We demonstrate that cell-state transition rules enriched with memory quickly transform a chaotic system converging to a complex global behaviour from almost any initial condition. Thus just in few steps we can select chaotic rules without exhaustive computational experiments or recurring to additional parameters. We provide analysis of well-known chaotic functions in one-dimensional CA, and decompose dynamics of the automata using majority memory exploring glider dynamics and reactions.

Undecidable Properties of Limit Set Dynamics of Cellular Automata

Abstract:Cellular Automata (CA) are discrete dynamical systems and an abstract model of parallel computation. The limit set of a cellular automaton is its maximal topological attractor. A well know result, due to Kari, says that all nontrivial properties of limit sets are undecidable. In this paper we consider properties of limit set dynamics, i.e. properties of the dynamics of Cellular Automata restricted to their limit sets. There can be no equivalent of Kari's Theorem for limit set dynamics. Anyway we show that there is a large class of undecidable properties of limit set dynamics, namely all properties of limit set dynamics which imply stability or the existence of a unique subshift attractor. As a consequence we have that it is undecidable whether the cellular automaton map restricted to the limit set is the identity, closing, injective, expansive, positively expansive, transitive.

Space-like dynamics in a reversible cellular automaton

Abstract:In this paper we study the space evolution in the Rule 54 reversible cellular automaton, which is a paradigmatic example of a deterministic interacting lattice gas. We show that the spatial translation of time configurations of the automaton is given in terms of local deterministic maps with the support that is small but bigger than that of the time evolution. The model is thus an example of space-time dual reversible cellular automaton, i.e. its dual is also (in general different) reversible cellular automaton. We provide two equivalent interpretations of the result; the first one relies on the dynamics of quasi-particles and follows from an exhaustive check of all the relevant time configurations, while the second one relies on purely algebraic considerations based on the circuit representation of the dynamics. Additionally, we use the properties of the local space evolution maps to provide an alternative derivation of the matrix product representation of multi-time correlation functions of local observables positioned at the same spatial coordinate.

Cold Dynamics in Cellular Automata: a Tutorial

Abstract:This tutorial is about cellular automata that exhibit 'cold dynamics'. By this we mean zero entropy, stabilization of all orbits, trivial asymptotic dynamics, etc. These are purely transient irreversible dynamics, but they capture many examples from the literature. A rich zoo of properties is presented and discussed: nilpotency and asymptotic, generic or mu-variants, unique ergodicity, convergence, bounded-changeness, freezingness. They all correspond to the 'cold dynamics' paradigm in some way, and we study their links and differences by various examples and results from the literature. Besides dynamical considerations, we also focus on computational aspects: we show how such 'cold cellular automata' can still compute under their dynamical constraint, and what are their computational limitation.

Abstract:Discrete dynamical systems can exhibit complex behavior from the iterative application of straightforward local rules. A famous class of examples comes from cellular automata whose global dynamics are notoriously challenging to analyze. To address this, we relax the regular connectivity grid of cellular automata to a random graph, which gives the class of graph cellular automata. Using the dynamical cavity method and its backtracking version, we show that this relaxation allows us to derive asymptotically exact analytical results on the global dynamics of these systems on sparse random graphs. Concretely, we showcase the results on a specific subclass of graph cellular automata with "conforming nonconformist" update rules, which exhibit dynamics akin to opinion formation. Such rules update a node's state according to the majority within their own neighborhood. In cases where the majority leads only by a small margin over the minority, nodes may exhibit nonconformist behavior. Instead of following the majority, they either maintain their own state, switch it, or follow the minority. For configurations with different initial biases towards one state we identify sharp dynamical phase transitions in terms of the convergence speed and attractor types. Abstract:Discretizing spacetime is often a natural step towards modelling physical systems. For quantum systems, if we also demand a strict bound on the speed of information propagation, we get quantum cellular automata (QCAs). These originally arose as an alternative paradigm for quantum computation, though more recently they have found application in understanding topological phases of matter and have} been proposed as models of periodically driven (Floquet) quantum systems, where QCA methods were used to classify their phases. QCAs have also been used as a natural discretization of quantum field theory, and some interesting examples of QCAs have been introduced that become interacting quantum field theories in the continuum limit. This review discusses all of these applications, as well as some other interesting results on the structure of quantum cellular automata, including the tensor-network unitary approach, the index theory and higher dimensional classifications of QCAs.

Abstract:Probabilistic cellular automata are prototypes of non equilibrium critical phenomena. This class of models includes among others the directed percolation problem (Domany Kinzel model) and the dynamical Ising model. The critical properties of these models are usually obtained by fine-tuning one or more control parameters, as for instance the temperature. We present a method for the parallel evolution of the model for all the values of the control parameter, although its implementation is in general limited to a fixed number of values. This algorithm facilitates the sketching of phase diagrams and can be useful in deriving the critical properties of the model. Since the criticality here emerges from the asymptotic distribution of some quantities, without tuning of parameters, our method is a mapping from a probabilistic cellular automaton with critical behavior to a self organized critical model with the same critical properties.

Abstract:In this paper, we formalize precisely the sense in which the application of a cellular automaton to partial configurations is a natural extension of its local transition function through the categorical notion of Kan extension. In fact, the two possible ways to do such an extension and the ingredients involved in their definition are related through Kan extensions in many ways. These relations provide additional links between computer science and category theory, and also give a new point of view on the famous Curtis–Hedlund theorem of cellular automata from the extended topological point of view provided by category theory. These links also allow to relatively easily generalize concepts pioneered by cellular automata to arbitrary kinds of possibly evolving spaces. No prior knowledge of category theory is assumed for the most part.

Abstract:Cellular Automata (CA), as they are presented in the literature, are abstract mathematical models of computation. In this pa- per we present an alternate approach: using the CA as a model or theory of physical systems and devices. While this approach abstracts away all details of the underlying physical system, it remains faithful to the fact that there is an underlying physical reality which it describes. This imposes certain restrictions on the types of computations a CA can physically carry out, and the resources it needs to do so. In this paper we explore these and other consequences of our reformalization.

Dynamical typicality in elementary cellular automata

Abstract:We study the dynamics of elementary cellular automata (CA) using numerical simulations. We follow the dynamics of macroscopic observables, which depend on the state of a large number of sites. If we consider the ensemble of states that share the same value of some macroscopic observable, for example, the density, we find that the dynamics of such macroscopic observable is approximately the same for the vast majority of the states in the ensemble, irrespective of the microscopic details, provided that the system size $N$ is large enough. Moreover, we find that the dynamics of any other macroscopic observable is also very similar for members of the same ensemble. We show that the ensemble fluctuations around the average macro-trajectory vanish as $N^{-1/2}$, irrespective of the observable and the dynamical rule. We show that the same phenomenon is present if we define our initial condition ensemble by fixing more than one macroscopic observable. The ensuing ``dynamical typicality'' phenomenon is very similar to what was recently found in the context of the dynamics of isolated quantum systems. Our results suggest that the same feature is likely to be found in a wide variety of complex dynamical systems. We also discuss the implications of our findings regarding the ability of CA to simulate physical systems.

Abstract:To respect physics and nature, cellular automata (CA) models of self-organisation, emergence, computation and logical universality should be isotropic, having equivalent dynamics in all directions. We present a novel paradigm, the iso-rule, a concise expression for isotropic CA by the output table for each isotropic neighborhood group, allowing an efficient method of navigating and exploring iso-rule-space. We describe new functions and tools in DDLab to generate iso-groups and iso-rules, for multi-value as well as binary, in one, two and three dimensions. These methods include filing, filtering, mutating, analysing dynamics by input-frequency and entropy, identifying the critical iso-groups for glider-gun/eater dynamics, and automatically classifying iso-rule-space. We illustrate these ideas and methods for two dimensional CA on square and hexagonal lattices.

Abstract:Elementary Cellular Automata (ECA) are a well-studied computational universe that is, despite its simple configurations, capable of impressive computational variety. Harvesting this computation in a useful way has historically shown itself to be difficult, but if combined with reservoir computing (RC), this becomes much more feasible. Furthermore, RC and ECA enable energy-efficient AI, making the combination a promising concept for Edge AI. In this work, we contrast ECA to substrates of Partially-Local CA (PLCA) and Homogeneous Homogeneous Random Boolean Networks (HHRBN). They are, in comparison, the topological heterogeneous counterparts of ECA. This represents a step from ECA towards more biological-plausible substrates. We analyse these substrates by testing on an RC benchmark (5-bit memory), using Temporal Derrida plots to estimate the sensitivity and assess the defect collapse rate. We find that, counterintuitively, disordered topology does not necessarily mean disordered computation. There are countering computational "forces" of topology imperfections leading to a higher collapse rate (order) and yet, if accounted for, an increased sensitivity to the initial condition. These observations together suggest a shrinking critical range.
