Abstract:We calculate accurate solar models and report the detailed time dependences of important solar quantities. We use helioseismology to constrain the luminosity evolution of the Sun and report the discovery of semiconvection in evolved solar models that include diffusion. In addition, we compare the computed sound speeds with the results of p-mode observations by BiSON, GOLF, GONG, LOWL, and MDI instruments. We contrast the neutrino predictions from a set of eight standard-like solar models and four deviant (or deficient) solar models with the results of solar neutrino experiments. For solar neutrino and helioseismological applications, we present present-epoch numerical tabulations of characteristics of the standard solar model as a function of solar radius, including the principal physical and composition variables, sound speeds, neutrino fluxes, and functions needed for calculating solar neutrino oscillations.

Abstract:We present updated standard solar models (SSMs) that incorporate the latest results for nuclear fusion rates, recently published. We show helioseismic results for high and low metallicity compositions and also for an alternative set of solar abundance, derived from 3D model atmospheres, which give intermediate results. For the high and low metallicity models, we show that current solar neutrino data can not differentiate between models and that a measurement of the CNO fluxes is necessary to achieve that goal. A few additional implications of a hypothetical measurement of CNO neutrinos, both in terms of solar and stellar physics, are discussed.

Alive and well: a short review about standard solar models

Abstract:Standard solar models (SSMs) provide a reference framework across a number of research fields: solar and stellar models, solar neutrinos, particle physics the most conspicuous among them. The accuracy of the physical description of the global properties of the Sun that SSMs provide has been challenged in the last decade by a number of developments in stellar spectroscopic techniques. Over the same period of time, solar neutrino experiments, and Borexino in particular, have measured the four solar neutrino fluxes from the pp-chains that are associated with 99\% of the nuclear energy generated in the Sun. Borexino has also set the most stringent limit on CNO energy generation, only $\sim 40\%$ larger than predicted by SSMs. More recently, and for the first time, radiative opacity experiments have been performed at conditions that closely resemble those at the base of the solar convective envelope. In this article, we review these developments and discuss the current status of SSMs, including its intrinsic limitations.

Abstract:The standard solar model (SSM) yield a $^8$B solar neutrino flux which is consistent within the theoretical and experimental uncertainties with that observed at Super-Kamiokande. The combined results from the Super- Kamiokande and the Chlorine solar neutrino experiments do not provide a solid evidence for neutrino properties beyond the minimal standard electroweak model. The results from the Gallium experiments and independently the combined results from Super-Kamiokande and the Chlorine experiment imply that the $^7$Be solar neutrino flux is strongly suppressed compared with that predicted by the SSM. This conclusion, however, is valid only if the neutrino absorption cross sections near threshold in Gallium and Chlorine do not differ significantly from their theoretical estimates. Such a departure has not been ruled out by the Chromium source experiments in Gallium. Even if the $^7$Be solar neutrino flux is suppressed compared with that predicted by the SSM, still it can be due to astrophysical effects not included in the simplistic SSM. Such effects include spatial and/or temporal variations in the temperature in the solar core induced by the convective layer through g-modes or by rotational mixing in the solar core, and dense plasma effects which may strongly enhance p-capture by $^7$Be relative to e-capture. The new generation of solar observations, which already look non stop deep into the sun, like Super-Kamiokande through neutrinos, and SOHO and GONG through acoustic waves, may be able to point at the correct solution; astrophysical solutions if they detect unexpected temporal and/or spatial behaviour, or particle physics solutions if Super-Kamiokande detects characteristic spectral distortion or temporal variations (e.g., the day-night effect) of the $^8$B solar neutrino flux . Abstract:We describe the current status of solar neutrino measurements and of the theory -- both neutrino physics and solar astrophysics -- employed in interpreting measurements. Important recent developments include Super-Kamiokande's determination of the neutrino-electron elastic scattering rate for 8B neutrinos to 3%; the latest SNO global analysis in which the inclusion of low-energy data from SNO I and II significantly narrowed the range of allowed values for the neutrino mixing angle theta12; Borexino results for both the 7Be and pep neutrino fluxes, the first direct measurements constraining the rate of ppI and ppII burning in the Sun; global reanalyses of solar neutrino data that take into account new reactor results on theta13; a new decadal evaluation of the nuclear physics of the pp chain and CNO cycle defining best values and uncertainties in the nuclear microphysics input to solar models; recognition of an emerging discrepancy between two tests of solar metallicity, helioseismological mappings of the sound speed in the solar interior, and analyses of the metal photoabsorption lines based on our best current description of the Sun's photosphere; a new round of standard solar model calculations optimized to agree either with helioseismology or with the new photospheric analysis; and, motivated by the solar abundance problem, the development of nonstandard, accreting solar models, in order to investigate possible consequences of the metal segregation that occurred in the proto-solar disk. We review this progress and describe how new experiments such as SNO+ could help us further exploit neutrinos as a unique probe of stellar interiors.

Solar Neutrino Experiments: New Physics?

Abstract:Physics beyond the simplest version of the standard electroweak model is required to reconcile the results of the chlorine and the Kamiokande solar neutrino experiments. None of the 1000 solar models in a full Monte Carlo simulation is consistent with the results of the chlorine or the Kamiokande experiments. Even if the solar models are forced articficially to have a ${}^8 B$ neutrino flux in agreement with the Kamiokande experiment, none of the fudged models agrees with the chlorine observations. This comparison shows that consistency of the chlorine and Kamiokande experiments requires some physical process that changes the shape of the ${}^8 B$ neutrino energy spectrum. The GALLEX and SAGE experiments, which currently have large statistical uncertainties, differ from the predictions of the standard solar model by $2 \sigma$ and $3 \sigma$, respectively. The possibility that the neutrino experiments are incorrect is briefly discussed.

Abstract:Using the data from SNO NCD phase, SuperK, Borexino and KamLAND Solar phase, we derive in a model independent way, bounds on the possible components in the solar neutrino flux. We update the limits on the antineutrino ($\bar\nu_x$) flux and sterile ($\nu_s$) component and compare them with the previous results obtained using SNO Salt phase data and data from SuperKamiokande experiments. It is affirmed that the upper bound on $\bar\nu_x$ is independent of the $\nu_s$ component. We recover the $\nu_s$ and $\bar\nu_x$ upper bounds existing in the literature. We also obtain bounds on $f_B$, the SSM normalization factor and the common parameter range for $f_B$ and the $\nu_s$ components in the light of latest data. In summary, we update, in a model independent way, the previous results existing in literature in the light of latest solar neutrino data.

Solar neutrinos: global analysis and implications for SNO

Abstract:We present a global analysis of all the available solar neutrino data treating consistently the 8B and hep neutrino fluxes as free parameters. The analysis reveals at 99.7% C.L. eight currently-allowed discrete regions in two-neutrino oscillation space, five regions corresponding to active neutrinos and three corresponding to sterile neutrinos. Most of the allowed solutions are robust with respect to changes in the analysis procedure, but the traditional vacuum solution is fragile. The globally-permitted range of the 8B neutrino flux, 0.45 to 1.95 in units of the BP2000 flux, is comparable to the 3 sigma range allowed by the standard solar model. We discuss the implications for SNO of a low mass, Delta m^2 ~ 6 times 10^{-12} eV^2, vacuum oscillation solution, previously found by Raghavan, and by Krastev and Petcov, but absent in recent analyses that included Super-Kamiokande data. For the SNO experiment, we present refined predictions for the charged-current rate and the ratio of the neutral-current rate to charged-current rate. The predicted charged-current rate can be clearly distinguished from the no-oscillation rate only for the LMA solution. The predicted ratio of the neutral-current rate to charged-current rate is distinguishable from the no-oscillation ratio for the LMA, SMA, LOW, and VAC solutions for active neutrinos.

The Solar Neutrino Problem - An Update

Abstract:The $^8$B solar neutrino flux as measured by Super-Kamiokande is consistent with the $^{37}$Ar production rate in $^{37}$Cl at Homestake. GALLEX and SAGE, continue to observe $^{71}$Ge production rates in $^{71}$Ga that are consistent with the minimal signal expected from the solar luminosity. The observed $^8$B solar neutrino flux is in good agreement with that predicted by the standard solar model of Dar and Shaviv with nuclear reaction rates that are supported by recent measurements of nuclear fusion cross sections at low energies. The measurements of Super-Kamiokande, SAGE and GALLEX suggest that the expected the pep, $^7$Be and NO solar neutrino fluxes are strongly suppressed. This can be explained by neutrino oscillations and the Mikheyev-Smirnov-Wolfenstein effect. Since neither a flavor change, nor a terrestrial variation, nor a spectral distortion of the $^8$B solar neutrino flux has been observed yet, the solar neutrino problem does not provide conclusive evidence for neutrino properties beyond the standard electroweak model. The deviations of the experimental results from those predicted by the standard solar models may reflect the approximate nature of of solar models and of our knowledge of nuclear reaction rates, radiation transport and particle diffusion in dense stellar plasmas. Only future observations of spectral distortions, or terrestrial modulation or flavor change of solar neutrinos in solar neutrino experiments, such as Super-Kamiokande, SNO, Borexino and HELLAZ will be able to establish that neutrino properties beyond the minimal standard electroweak model are responsible for the solar neutrino problem.

Abstract:Solar neutrinos have been the subject of experimental study for almost half a century. The initial aim was '...to see into the interior of a star and thus verify directly the hypothesis of nuclear energy generation in stars'. Since then the field has advanced a long way. This article reviews what we have learnt from solar neutrinos to date, the current experimental status of the field, and the finer details of solar models and precision measurements of neutrino oscillation parameters that could be probed with this free source of extra-terrestrial particles.

Our analysis shows that the FCNC solutions with massless neutrinos provide a good fit to the latest solar neutrino data. Predictions for future experiments are formulated which will permit further tests of these solutions.

Abstract:Imposing a constraint of the sound-speed profile determined from helioseismology and updating the microphysics, we have revised our seismic solar model, constructed with the assumption of a homogeneous metal abundance distribution, and have shown that the theoretically expected neutrino fluxes are still significantly more than the observations. With the same sound-speed profile constraint, we also constructed solar models with low metal abundance in the core, and evaluated the neutrino fluxes of these models to see if nonstandard solar models with a low metal core can solve the solar neutrino problem. Some of these models are in agreement with the Homestake data, the Super-Kamiokande data, and the sound-speed profile simultaneously, but none of these satisfy both the neutrino flux data, including GALLEX and SAGE, and the helioseismically determined density profile.

Progress in Particle and Nuclear Physics

Abstract:As a free, intensive, rarely interactive, and well directional messenger, solar neutrinos have been driving both solar physics and neutrino physics developments for more than half a century. Since more extensive and advanced neutrino experiments are under construction, being planned or proposed, we are striving toward an era of precise and comprehensive measurement of solar neutrinos in the next decades. In this article, we review recent theoretical and experimental progress achieved in solar neutrino physics. We present not only an introduction to neutrinos from the standard solar model and the standard flavor evolution, but also a compilation of a variety of new physics that could affect and hence be probed by solar neutrinos. After reviewing the latest techniques and issues involved in the measurement of solar neutrino spectra and background reduction, we provide our anticipation on the physics gains from the new generation of neutrino experiments.

Progress of Theoretical and Experimental Physics

Abstract:Abstract The first solar neutrino experiment, led by Raymond Davis Jr, showed a deficit of neutrinos relative to the solar model prediction, referred to as the “solar neutrino problem” since the 1970s. The Kamiokande experiment, led by Masatoshi Koshiba, successfully observed solar neutrinos, as first reported in 1989. The observed flux of solar neutrinos was almost half the predicted value and confirmed the solar neutrino problem. This problem was not resolved for some time due to possible uncertainties in the solar model. In 2001, it was discovered that the solar neutrino problem is due to neutrino oscillations by comparing the Super-Kamiokande and Sudbury Neutrino Observatory results; this was the first model-independent comparison. Detailed studies of solar neutrino oscillations have since been performed, and the results of solar neutrino experiments are consistent with solar model predictions when the effects of neutrino oscillations are taken into account. In this article, the history of solar neutrino observations is reviewed with the contributions of Kamiokande and Super-Kamiokande detailed.

Abstract:More than forty years after the first detection of neutrinos from the Sun, the spectroscopy of solar neutrinos has proven to be an on-going success story. The long-standing puzzle about the observed solar neutrino deficit has been resolved by the discovery of neutrino flavor oscillations. Today's experiments have been able to solidify the standard MSW-LMA oscillation scenario by performing precise measurements over the whole energy range of the solar neutrino spectrum. This article reviews the enabling experimental technologies: On the one hand mutli-kiloton-scale water Cherenkov detectors performing measurements in the high-energy regime of the spectrum, on the other end ultrapure liquid-scintillator detectors that allow for a low-threshold analysis. The current experimental results on the fluxes, spectra and time variation of the different components of the solar neutrino spectrum will be presented, setting them in the context of both neutrino oscillation physics and the hydrogen fusion processes embedded in the Standard Solar Model. Finally, the physics potential of state-of-the-art detectors and a next-generation of experiments based on novel techniques will be assessed in the context of the most interesting open questions in solar neutrino physics: a precise measurement of the vacuum-matter transition curve of electron-neutrino oscillation probability that offers a definitive test of the basic MSW-LMA scenario or the appearance of new physics; and a first detection of neutrinos from the CNO cycle that will provide new information on solar metallicity and stellar physics.

Shortcomings of the Standard Solar Model

Abstract:The SSM, invented in early nineteen sixties, remains a useful construction. There are now much larger number of its predictions that may be compared with observations than when it was first introduced. Seismic sounding based on oscillations frequencies provides the best test of the physical input for modelling stellar evolution. The results of the test must be viewed as a support for the standard theory of stellar evolution. However, significant differences in the sound-speed, photospheric He abundance, and other parameters between the Sun and the current models remain. Shortcomings in the EOS and in treatment of convection have been revealed. The differences in the sound-speed in the radiative interior may be explained by small opacity errors but other explanations are possible. Results of seismic sounding support the idea that the element mixing in the outer part of the radiative interior occurred during a significant fraction of the Sun's life. Such mixing is considered as a possible explanation of the deficit of lithium. The shortcomings of SSM cannot explain the deficits of measured neutrino fluxes.

The luminosity constraint on solar neutrino fluxes

Abstract:A specific linear combination of the total solar neutrino fluxes must equal the measured solar photon luminosity if nuclear fusion reactions among light elements are responsible for solar energy generation. This luminosity constraint, previously used in a limited form in testing the no neutrino oscillation hypothesis, is derived in a generality that includes all of the relevant solar neutrino fluxes and which is suitable for analyzing the results of many different solar neutrino experiments. With or without allowing for neutrino oscillations, the generalized luminosity constraint can be used in future analyses of solar neutrino data. Accurate numerical values for the linear coefficients are provided.

Does the Sun Shine by pp or CNO Fusion Reactions?

Abstract:We show that solar neutrino experiments set an upper limit of 7.8% (7.3% including the recent KamLAND measurements) to the fraction of energy that the Sun produces via the CNO fusion cycle, which is an order of magnitude improvement upon the previous limit. New experiments are required to detect CNO neutrinos corresponding to the 1.5% of the solar luminosity that the standard solar model predicts is generated by the CNO cycle.
