Abstract: Recently, the Dodgson's determinant condensation algorithm was revisited in many papers [College Math. Journal 42(1)(2011): 43--54, College Math. Journal 38(2)(2007): 85--95, Math Horizons 14(2)(2006): 12--15},etc.]. This method is attractive, but there also exist some shortcomings. In this paper, a symbolic algorithm and the corresponding problems are discussed to overcome these shortcomings. Numerical experiments show that this symbolic modified algorithm has highly sensitivity on initial configuration of the matrix in condensation process.

Abstract:In this {\it case study}, we hope to show why Sheldon Axler was not just wrong, but {\em wrong}, when he urged, in 1995: ``Down with Determinants!''. We first recall how determinants are useful in enumerative combinatorics, and then illustrate three versatile tools (Dodgson's condensation, the holonomic ansatz and constant term evaluations) to operate in tandem to prove a certain intriguing determinantal formula conjectured by the first author. We conclude with a postscript describing yet another, much more efficient, method for evaluating determinants: `ask determinant-guru, Christian Krattenthaler', but advise people only to use it as a last resort, since if we would have used this last method right away, we would not have had the fun of doing it all by ourselves.

Abstract:This article evaluates the determinants of two classes of special matrices, which are both from a number theory problem. Applications of the evaluated determinants can be found in [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="math.NT/0509523" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/math.NT/0509523">arXiv:math.NT/0509523</a>]. Note that the two determinants are actually special cases of Theorems 20 and 23 in [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="math.CO/9902004" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/math.CO/9902004">arXiv:math.CO/9902004</a>], respectively. Since this paper does not provide any new results, it will not be published anywhere.

History and Overview

Abstract:In 1857 Sylvester stated a result on determinants without proof that was recognized as important over the subsequent century. Thus it was a surprise to Akritas, Akritas and Malaschonok when they found only one English proof - given by Bareiss 111 years later! To rectify the gap in the literature these authors collected and translated six additional proofs: four from German and two from Russian. These proofs range from long and "readily understood by high school students" to elegant but high level. We add our own proof to this collection which exploits the product rule and the fact that taking a derivative of a determinant with respect to one of its elements yields its cofactor. A differential operator can then be used to replace one row with another.

Abstract:In this paper we confirm three conjectures of Z.-W. Sun on determinants. We first show that any odd integer n> 3 divides the determinant vertical bar(i(2) + dj(2)) (i(2) + dj(2)/n)vertical bar(0 <= i,j <=(n-1)/2), where d is any integer and (center dot/n) is the Jacobi symbol. Then we prove some divisibility results concerning vertical bar(i + dj)(n)vertical bar(0 <= i,j <= n-1) and vertical bar(i(2) + dj(2))(n)vertical bar(0 <= i,j <= n-1), where d not equal 0 and n> 2 are integers. Finally, for any odd prime p and integers c and d with p inverted iota cd, we determine completely the Legendre symbol (S-c(d,p)/p), where S-c(d, p) := vertical bar(i(2)+dj(2)+c/p)vertical bar(1 <= i,j <=(p-1)/2).

Abstract:A $n$-by-$n$ matrix is called totally positive ($TP$) if all its minors are positive and $TP_k$ if all of its $k$-by-$k$ submatrices are $TP$. For an arbitrary totally positive matrix or $TP_k$ matrix, we investigate if the $r$th compound ($1<r<n$) is in turn $TP$ or $TP_k$, and demonstrate a strong negative resolution in general. Focus is then shifted to Dodgson's algorithm for calculating the determinant of a generic matrix, and we analyze whether the associated condensed matrices are possibly totally positive or $TP_k$. We also show that all condensed matrices associated with a $TP$ Hankel matrix are $TP$.

Abstract:In his work on the twenty vertex model, Di Francesco [Electron. J. Combin. 28(4) (2021), Paper No. 4.38] found a determinant formula for the number of configurations in a specific such model, and he conjectured a closed form product formula for the evaluation of this determinant. We prove this conjecture here. Moreover, we actually generalize this determinant evaluation to a one-parameter family of determinant evaluations, and we present many more determinant evaluations of similar type - some proved, some left open as conjectures.

Abstract:Sylvester's identity is a classical determinantal identity with a straightforward linear algebra proof. We present a new, combinatorial proof of the identity, prove several non-commutative versions, and find a $\beta$-extension that is both a generalization of Sylvester's identity and the $\beta$-extension of the MacMahon master theorem.

Abstract:In this paper, we study arithmetic properties of certain determinants involving powers of $i^2+cij+dj^2$, where $c$ and $d$ are integers. For example, for any odd integer $n>1$ with $(\frac dn)=-1$ we prove that $\det [ (\frac{i^2+cij+dj^2}{n})]_{0\le i,j\le n-1}$ is divisible by $\varphi(n)^2$, where $(\frac{\cdot}{n})$ is the Jacobi symbol and $\varphi$ is Euler's totient function. This confirms a previous conjecture of the second author.

Abstract:This is a complement to my previous article "Advanced Determinant Calculus" (Séminaire Lotharingien Combin. 42 (1999), Article B42q, 67 pp.). In the present article, I share with the reader my experience of applying the methods described in the previous article in order to solve a particular problem from number theory (G. Almkvist, J. Petersson and the author, Experiment. Math. 12 (2003), 441-456). Moreover, I add a list of determinant evaluations which I consider as interesting, which have been found since the appearance of the previous article, or which I failed to mention there, including several conjectures and open problems.

Abstract:The object of this paper is to introduce a new and fascinating method of solving large linear equations, based on Cramer's rule or Gaussian elimination but employing Sylvester's determinant identity in its computation process. In addition, a scheme suitable for parallel computing is presented for this kind of generalized Chiò's determinant condensation processes, which makes this new method have a property of natural parallelism. Finally, some numerical experiments also confirm our theoretical analysis.

Abstract:In this paper we study some conjectures on determinants with Jacobi symbol entries posed by Z.-W. Sun. For any positive integer n≡3(mod4), we show that(6,1)n=[6,1]n=(3,2)n=[3,2]n=0 and(4,2)n=(8,8)n=(3,3)n=(21,112)n=0 as conjectured by Sun, where(c,d)n=|(i2+cij+dj2n)|1≤i,j≤n−1 and[c,d]n=|(i2+cij+dj2n)|0≤i,j≤n−1 with (⋅n) the Jacobi symbol. We also prove that (10,9)p=0 for any prime p≡5(mod12), and [5,5]p=0 for any prime p≡13,17(mod20), which were also conjectured by Sun. Our proofs involve character sums over finite fields.

Abstract:For any three $\,n\times n\,$ matrices $\,A,B,X\,$ over a commutative ring $\,S$, we prove that $\,{\rm det}\,(A+B-AXB)={\rm det}\,(A+B-BXA) \in S$. This apparently new formula may be regarded as a ``ternary generalization'' of Sylvester's classical determinantal formula $\,{\rm det}\,(I_n-AB)={\rm det}\,(I_n-BA)\,$ for any pair of $\,n\times n\,$ matrices $\,A,B\,$ over $\,S$.

Abstract:The problem of counting the $\mathbb{F}_q$-valued points of a variety has been well-studied from algebro-geometric, topological, and combinatorial perspectives. We explore a combinatorially flavored version of this problem studied by Anzis et al. (2018), which is similar to work of Kontsevich, Elkies, and Haglund. Anzis et al. considered the question: what is the probability that the determinant of a Jacobi-Trudi matrix vanishes if the variables are chosen uniformly at random from a finite field? They gave a formula for various partitions such as hooks, staircases, and rectangles. We give a formula for partitions whose parts form an arithmetic progression, verifying and generalizing one of their conjectures. More generally, we compute the probability of the determinant vanishing for a class of matrices (``multislant matrices'') made of Toeplitz blocks with certain properties. We furthermore show that the determinant of a skew Jacobi-Trudi matrix is equidistributed across the finite field if the skew partition is a ribbon.
