Abstract:In the quenched approximation, the gauge covariance properties of three vertex Ansätze in the Schwinger-Dyson equation for the fermion self energy are analysed in three- and four- dimensional quantum electrodynamics. Based on the Cornwall-Jackiw-Tomboulis effective action, it is inferred that the spectral representation used for the vertex in the gauge technique cannot support dynamical chiral symmetry breaking. A criterion for establishing whether a given Ansatz can confer gauge covariance upon the Schwinger-Dyson equation is presented and the Curtis and Pennington Ansatz is shown to satisfy this constraint. We obtain an analytic solution of the Schwinger-Dyson equation for quenched, massless three-dimensional quantum electrodynamics for arbitrary values of the gauge parameter in the absence of dynamical chiral symmetry breaking.

Abstract:We discuss the chirally symmetric solution of the massless, quenched, Dyson-Schwinger equation for the fermion propagator in three and four dimensions. The solutions are manifestly gauge covariant. We consider a gauge covariance constraint on the fermion-gauge-boson vertex, which motivates a vertex Ansatz that both satisfies the Ward identity when the fermion self-mass is zero and ensures gauge covariance of the fermion propagator.

Abstract:We study a model Schwinger-Dyson equation in three dimensions based on three-dimensional QED in the confining quenched approximation. We employ an ansatz for the dressed photon-fermion vertex function that does not have a singularity on the light cone. Our ansatz also allows us to study the relationship between the transverse part of the vertex and gauge independence of <psi-BAR-psi>. We find that the transverse part of the vertex is crucial to obtaining <psi-BAR-psi> independent of the gauge parameter. It modifies both the infrared and ultraviolet behavior of the fermion propagator without upsetting the 1/p2 behavior expected of the mass function at large spacelike p2.

Abstract:The fermion propagator in an arbitrary covariant gauge can be obtained from the Landau gauge result via a Landau–Khalatnikov–Fradkin transformation. This transformation can be written in a practically useful form in both configuration and momentum space. It is therefore possible to anticipate effects of a gauge transformation on the propagator’s analytic properties. These facts enable one to establish that if a critical number of flavours for chiral symmetry restoration and deconfinement exists in noncompact QED3, then its value is independent of the gauge parameter. This is explicated using simple forms for the fermion–photon vertex and the photon vacuum polarisation. The illustration highlights pitfalls that must be avoided in order to arrive at valid conclusions. Landau gauge is seen to be the covariant gauge in which the propagator avoids modification by a non-dynamical gauge-dependent exponential factor, whose presence can obscure truly observable features of the theory.
On Landau-Khalatnikov-Fradkin transformation in quenched QED3

Abstract:We present the results of studies [1,2] of the gauge covariance of the massless fermion propagator in three-dimensional quenched quantum electrodynamics in the framework of dimensional regularization in d=3-2\ep. Assuming the finiteness of the perturbative expansion, i.e. existence of the limit \ep \to 0, it was shown in [1] that exactly for d=3 all odd perturbative coefficients, starting from the third order, must be equal to zero in any gauge. To test this, in Ref. [2] we calculated three- and four-loop corrections to the massless fermionic propagator. Three-loop corrections are finite and gauge-invariant, while four-loop corrections have singularities. The terms depending on the gauge parameter are completely determined by the lower orders in accordance with the Landau-Khalatnikov-Fradkin transformation.

Abstract:We extend a previous Landau-gauge study of subtractive renormalization of the fermion propagator Dyson-Schwinger equation in strong-coupling, quenched four-dimensional QED to arbitrary covariant gauges. We use the fermion-photon proper vertex proposed by Curtis and Pennington with an additional correction term included to compensate for the small gauge dependence induced by the ultraviolet regulator. We discuss the chiral limit and the onset of dynamical chiral symmetry breaking in the presence of nonperturbative renormalization. We extract the critical coupling in several different gauges and find evidence of a small residual gauge dependence in this quantity.

Abstract:As a toy model of quantum chromodynamics (QCD), we investigate the influence of the vacuum polarization on the photon propagator, in massless quantum electrodynamics in 2+1 dimensions (QED3), using the coupled Dyson–Schwinger equations for the fermion and photon propagators with a range of fermion–photon vertices. It is found that the form of the photon propagators in the Nambu–Goldstone and Wigner phases exhibit distinctly different behaviors and it is expected that similar things happen in QCD. Hence in the phenomenological application of QCD one should choose different forms of gluon propagator as input to solve the quark self-energy functions in the two different phases, especially in the study of QCD phase transitions. In addition, employing these results, we discuss the causation of dynamical chiral symmetry breaking (DCSB) in QED3 and compare it with that in QCD.
Gauge field fluctuation corrected QED3 effective action by fermionic particle-vortex duality

Abstract:We develop a non-perturbative framework to incorporate gauge field fluctuations into QED3 effective actions in the infrared by fermionic particle-vortex duality. The utility is demonstrated by the application to models containing N species of 2-component Dirac fermions in a couple of solvable and interpretable electromagnetic backgrounds: N = 1 or 2. For the N = 1 model, we establish a correspondence between fermion Casimir energy at finite density and the magnetic Euler-Heisenberg Lagrangian, and we further evaluate the correction to their amplitudes. This in turn predicts the amplification of charge susceptibility and the reduction of magnetic permeability. We additionally supply physical interpretations to each component of our calculation as well as alternative derivations based on energy density measurements in different characteristic lengths. For N = 2, we show that the magnetic catalysis is erased in a U(1)$\times$U(1) QED3 and therefore there is no breakdown of chiral symmetry. Some reasoning is offered based on the properties of the lowest Landau level wave functions.

One-loop fermion-photon vertex in arbitrary gauge and dimensions: a novel approach

Abstract:We compute one-loop electron-photon vertex with fully off-shell external momenta in an arbitrary covariant gauge and space-time dimension. There exist numerous efforts in literature where one-loop off-shell vertex is calculated by employing the standard first order Feynman rules in different covariant gauges and space-time dimensions of interest. The tensor structure which decomposes this three-point vertex into the components transverse and longitudinal to the photon momentum gets intertwined in this first order formalism. The Ward-Takahashi identity is explicitly invoked to untangle the two pieces and the results are expressed in a preferred basis of twelve spin-amplitudes. We propose a novel approach based upon an efficient combination of the first and second order formalisms of quantum electrodynamics to compute this one-loop vertex. Among some conspicuous advantages is the fact that this less known second order formalism separates the spin and scalar degrees of freedom of an electron interacting electromagnetically. More noticeably, the longitudinal and transverse contributions naturally disentangle from the onset in our approach. Moreover, this decomposition leads to identities between one-loop scalar Feynman integrals with higher powers in the propagators and shifted space-time dimensions that can be used to prove the Ward-Takahashi identity at one-loop order without the need to evaluate any Feynman integral. Additionally, this natural decomposition allows us to establish the gauge-independence of the Pauli form factor through explicit cancellations of scalar Feynman integrals that depend on the gauge parameter. These cancellations naturally lead to a compact expression for the Pauli form factor in arbitrary dimensions. Wherever necessary and insightful, we make comparisons with earlier works.

Abstract:In recent years, the quantum computing method has been used to address the sign problem in traditional Monte Carlo lattice gauge theory (LGT) simulations. We propose that the Coulomb gauge (CG) should be used in quantum simulations of LGT. This is because the redundant degrees of freedom can be eliminated in CG. Therefore, the Hamiltonian in CG does not need to be gauge invariance, allowing the gauge field to be discretized naively. We point out that discretized gauge fields and fermion fields should be placed on momentum and position lattices, respectively. Under this scheme, the CG condition and Gauss's law can be conveniently preserved by solving algebraic equations of polarization vectors. We also discuss the procedure for mapping gauge fields to qubits, and then demonstrate the polynomial scaling of qubits and the complexity of time evolution. Finally, we calculate the vacuum expectation value (VEV) of the U(1) plaquette operator and the Wilson loop on a classical device to test the performance of our discretization scheme.

Abstract:We study gauge invariant states in QED, where states are understood in terms of data living on the boundary of gauge invariant path-integrals. This is done for both scalar and spinor QED, and for boundaries that are either time slices, or the boundaries of a 'causal diamond'. We discuss both the case where the gauge field falls off to zero at the boundaries, and the case of 'large gauge transformations', where it remains finite at the boundaries. The dynamics are discussed using the gauge-invariant propagator, describing motion of both the particles and the field between the boundaries. We demonstrate how the path-integral naturally generates a 'Coulomb-field' dressing factor for states living on time-slices, and how this is done without fixing any gauge. We show that the form of the dressing depends only on the nature of the boundaries. We also derive the analogous dressing for states defined on null infinity, showing both its Coulombic parts as well as soft-photon parts.

Abstract:We construct the gauge invariant three-photon decay amplitude of particle-antiparticle bound states modeled by the Dyson-Schwinger and Bethe-Salpeter equations. Application to the quark-antiquark ($q\bar{q}$) bound states is emphasized. An essential aspect of our formulation is that it applies to any underlying quantum field theoretic model of the $q\bar{q}$ system, and not just to models, like exact QCD, where the quark self-energy $\Sigma$ couples to the electromagnetic field solely via dressed quark propagators. In this way, applications to effective field theories and other QCD motivated models are envisioned. The three-photon decay amplitude is constructed by attaching currents to all possible places in the Feynman diagrams contributing to the dressed quark propagator. The gauge invariance of our construction is thus a direct consequence of respecting the underlying structure of the quantum field theory determining the dynamics. In the resultant expression for the three-photon decay amplitude, all the basic ingredients consisting of the bound state wave function, the final-state interaction $q\bar{q}$ $t$ matrix, the dressed quark propagator, and dressed quark currents, are determined by a universal Bethe-Salpeter kernel.

Perturbative analysis of the three gluon vertex in different gauges at one-loop

Abstract:In this study, we present a perturbative analysis of the three-gluon vertex for a kinematical symmetric configuration in dimension $n=4-2\epsilon$ and different covariant gauges.Our study can describe the form factors of the three gluon vertex in a wide range of momentum. We employ a momentum subtraction (MOM) scheme to define the renormalized vertex. We give an in-depth review of three commonly used vector basis for the vertex, and explicitly show the expressions to change from one basis to the other. Although our estimates are valid only in the perturbative regime, we extend our numerical predictions to the infrared domain and show that in $n=4$ some nonperturbative properties are qualitatively present already at perturbation theory. In particular, we find a critical gauge above which the leading form factor displays the so-called zero crossing. We contrast our findings to those of other models and observe a fairly good agreement.

One loop reduced QED for massive fermions within an innovative formalism

Abstract:We carry out a detailed study of the three-point fermion-photon interaction vertex at one loop order for massive fermions in reduced quantum electrodynamics. This calculation is carried out in arbitrary covariant gauges and space-time dimensions within a recently proposed innovative approach based upon an efficient combination of the first and second order formalisms of quantum electrodynamics. This procedure provides a natural decomposition of the vertex into its components which are longitudinal and transverse to the photon momentum. It also separates the spin and scalar degrees of freedom of a fermion interacting electromagnetically, allowing us to readily establish the gauge-independence of the Pauli form factor and compute it in an expeditious manner. All incoming and outgoing momenta are taken off-shell at the outset. However, we present results for cases of particular kinematic interest whenever required. For the sake of completeness, we also provide expressions for the massive fermion self energy and photon vacuum polarization, verifying known expressions for massless reduced quantum electrodynamics and computing the renormalization constants ${\cal Z}_1$, ${\cal Z}_2$ and ${\cal Z}_3$. As we provide general expressions for the computed Green functions, we readily reproduce and confirm the results for standard quantum electrodynamics. Comparing the two cases, we infer that the Pauli form factor for reduced quantum electrodynamics is $8/3$ times that for the standard QED in four dimensions, implying a higher Landé $g$-factor. We expect our perturbative calculation of the fermion-photon vertex to serve as a guide for any non-perturbative construction of this Green function, invariably required in the Schwinger-Dyson equation studies of the subject.

Abstract:There are different operators of quark and gluon momenta, orbital angular momenta, and gluon spin in the nucleon structure study. The precise meaning of these operators are studied based on gauge invariance, Lorentz covariance and canonical quantization rule. The advantage and disadvantage of different definitions are analyzed. A gauge invariant canonical decomposition of the total momentum and angular momentum into quark and gluon parts is suggested based on the decomposition of the gauge potential into gauge invariant (covariant) physical part and gauge dependent pure gauge part. Abstract:We investigate the behavior of the vacuum polarization of the gauge-boson Pi and the wave-function renormalization factor of the fermion A in QED(3), using the coupled Dyson-Schwinger equations for the gauge-boson and fermion propagator. Using several different ansatze for the fermion-gauge-boson vertex, we End that the wave-function renormalization factor A and especially the vacuum polarization Pi have different behaviors in the dynamical chiral symmetry breaking phase and in the chiral symmetric phase and hence in the phenomenological applications of QED(3) one should choose different forms of gauge-boson propagator for these two phases. We also End that when adopting a specific ansatze of the fermion-gauge-boson vertex (ansatze (3)) the vacuum polarization function equals its one-loop perturbative result in the chiral symmetric phase. This fact suggests that in QED(3) the Wigner vacuum corresponds to the perturbative vacuum.

Abstract:{Following a successfully quantization scheme previously }{{% developed {\ in Ref. \cite{GUPTAEVEN} for a}} parity-even {gauge sector} {of the SME, we}} have established the Gupta-Bleuler {% quantization {of a} {\ parity-odd} and CPT-even }electrodynamics of {the }standard model extension (SME) {without recoursing to a small photon mass regulator}. {Keeping the photons massless,} {% {we have adopted the gauge fixing condition:}} $G(A_{\mu })=(\partial _{0}+\kappa^{0j}\partial _{j}) (A_{0}+\kappa ^{0k}A_{k})+\partial _{i}A^{i}$% . The{\ four} polarization vectors of the gauge field are {% exactly} determined by solving an eigenvalue problem,{\ exhibiting birefringent second order contributions in the Lorentz-violating parameters}% . They allow to express the Hamiltonian in terms of annihilation and creation operators whose positivity is guaranteed by imposing a weak Gupta-Bleuler constraint, defining the physical states. Consequently, we compute the field commutation relation which has been expressed in terms of Pauli-Jordan functions modified by Lorentz violation whose light-cone structures have allowed to analyze the microcausality issue.

Abstract:We present a detailed exploration of certain outstanding features of the transversely-projected three-gluon vertex, using the corresponding Schwinger-Dyson equation in conjunction with key results obtained from quenched lattice simulations. The main goal of this study is the scrutiny of the approximate property denominated ``planar degeneracy'', unveiled when the Bose symmetry of the vertex is properly exploited. The planar degeneracy leads to a particularly simple parametrization of the vertex, reducing its kinematic dependence to essentially a single variable. Our analysis, carried out in the absence of dynamical quarks, reveals that the planar degeneracy is particularly accurate for the description of the form factor associated with the classical tensor, for a wide array of arbitrary kinematic configurations. Instead, the remaining three form factors display considerable violations of this property. In addition, and in close connection with the previous point, we demonstrate the numerical dominance of the classical form factor over all others, except in the vicinity of the soft-gluon kinematics. The final upshot of these considerations is the emergence of a very compact description for the three-gluon vertex in general kinematics, which may simplify significantly nonperturbative applications involving this vertex.
