Abstract:Abstract Nonrigorous character of the density-functional theory for inhomogeneous electron gas based on the hypothesis assuming the existence of a universal density functional is demonstrated. A single-particle density matrix must be determined to calculate the ground-state energy of a finite system with a finite number of electrons. A single-particle Green function can be used to unambiguously determine the ground-state energy of an inhomogeneous electron system that satisfies the thermodynamic limit.

Abstract:We consider a two-dimensional determinantal Coulomb gas confined by a class of radial external potentials. In the limit of large number of particles, the Coulomb particles tend to accumulate on a compact set S, the support of the equilibrium measure associated with a given external potential. If the particles are forced to be completely confined in a disk D$${\mathcal {D}}$$ due to a hard-wall constraint on ∂D⊂IntS$${\partial }{\mathcal {D}}\subset {\text {Int}}S$$, then the equilibrium configuration changes and the equilibrium measure acquires a singular component at the hard wall. We study the local statistics of Coulomb particles in the vicinity of the hard wall and prove that their local correlations are expressed in terms of “Laplace-type” integrals, which appear in the context of truncated unitary matrices in the regime of weak non-unitarity.
Edge fluctuations and third-order phase transition in harmonically confined long-range systems

Abstract:We study the distribution of the position of the rightmost particle $x_{\max}$ in a $N$-particle Riesz gas in one dimension confined in a harmonic trap. The particles interact via long-range repulsive potential, of the form $r^{-k}$ with $-2<k<\infty$ where $r$ is the inter-particle distance. In equilibrium at temperature $O(1)$, the gas settles on a finite length scale $L_N$ that depends on $N$ and $k$. We numerically observe that the typical fluctuation of $y_{\max} = x_{\max}/L_N$ around its mean is of $O(N^{-\eta_k})$. Over this length scale, the distribution of the typical fluctuations has a $N$ independent scaling form. We show that the exponent $\eta_k$ obtained from the Hessian theory predicts the scale of typical fluctuations remarkably well. The distribution of atypical fluctuations to the left and right of the mean $\langle y_{\max} \rangle$ are governed by the left and right large deviation functions, respectively. We compute these large deviation functions explicitly $\forall k>-2$. We also find that these large deviation functions describe a pulled to pushed type phase transition as observed in Dyson's log-gas ($k\to 0$) and $1d$ one component plasma ($k=-1$). Remarkably, we find that the phase transition remains $3^{\rm rd}$ order for the entire regime. Our results demonstrate the striking universality of the $3^{\rm rd}$ order transition even in models that fall outside the paradigm of Coulomb systems and the random matrix theory. We numerically verify our analytical expressions of the large deviation functions via Monte Carlo simulation using an importance sampling algorithm.

The Universal Edge Physics in Fractional Quantum Hall Liquids

Abstract:The chiral Luttinger liquid theory for fractional quantum Hall edge transport predicts universal power-law behavior in the current-voltage (I-V) characteristics for electrons tunneling into the edge. However, it has not been unambiguously observed in experiments in two-dimensional electron gases based on GaAs/GaAlAs heterostructures or quantum wells. One plausible cause is the fractional quantum Hall edge reconstruction, which introduces non-chiral edge modes. The coupling between counterpropagating edge modes can modify the exponent of the I-V characteristics. By comparing the v = 1/3 fractional quantum Hall states in modulation-doped semiconductor devices and in graphene devices, we show that the graphene-based systems have an experimental accessible parameter region to avoid the edge reconstruction, which is suitable for the exploration of the universal edge tunneling exponent predicted by the chiral Luttinger liquid theory.
Edge Behavior of Higher Complex-Dimensional Determinantal Point Processes

Abstract:As recently proved in generality by Hedenmalm and Wennman, it is a universal behavior of complex random normal matrix models that one finds a complementary error function behavior at the boundary (also called edge) of the droplet as the matrix size increases. Such behavior is seen both in the density of the eigenvalues, and the correlation kernel, where the Faddeeva plasma kernel emerges. These results are neatly expressed with the help of the outward unit normal vector on the edge. We prove that such universal behaviors transcend this class of random normal matrices, being also valid in a specific ``elliptic'' class of determinantal point processes defined on $\mathbb C^d$, which are higher dimensional generalizations of the determinantal point processes describing the eigenvalues of the complex Ginibre ensemble and the complex elliptic Ginibre ensemble. These models describe a system of particles in $\mathbb C^d$ with mutual repulsion, that are confined to the origin by an external field $\mathscr V(z) = |z|^2 - \tau \operatorname{Re}(z_1^2+\ldots+z_d^2)$, where $0\leq \tau<1$. Their average density of particles converges to a uniform law on a $2d$-dimensional ellipsoidal region. It is on the hyperellipsoid bounding this region that we find a complementary error function behavior and the Faddeeva plasma kernel. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first instance of the Faddeeva plasma kernel emerging in a higher dimensional model. The results provide evidence for a possible edge universality theorem for determinantal point processes on $\mathbb C^d$.

Abstract:We resolve the long-standing controversy over the surface energy of simple metals: Density functional methods that require uniform-electron-gas input agree with each other at many levels of sophistication, but not with high-level correlated calculations like Fermi Hypernetted Chain and Diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC) that predict the uniform-gas correlation energy. Here we apply a very high-level correlated approach, the inhomogeneous Singwi-Tosi-Land-Sjölander (ISTLS) method, and find that the density functionals are indeed reliable (because the surface energy is "bulk-like"). ISTLS values are close to recently-revised DMC values. Our work also vindicates the previously-disputed use of uniform-gas-based nonlocal kernels in time-dependent density functional theory.

Revealing quasi-excitations in the low-density homogeneous electron gas with model exchange-correlation kernels

Abstract:Time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) within the linear response regime provides a solid mathematical framework to capture excitations. The accuracy of the theory, however, largely depends on the approximations for the exchange-correlation (xc) kernels. Away from the long-wavelength (or $q=0$ short wave-vector) and zero-frequency ($\omega=0$) limit, the correlation contribution to the kernel becomes more relevant and dominant over exchange. The dielectric function in principle can encompass xc effects relevant to describe low-density physics. Furthermore, besides collective plasmon excitations, the dielectric function can reveal collective electron-hole excitations, often dubbed ``ghost excitons.'' Beside collective excitons, the physics in the low-density regime is rich, as exemplified by a static charge-density wave that was recently found for $r_\mathrm{s} > 69$, and was shown to be associated with softening of the plasmon mode. These excitations are seen to be present in much higher density 2D HEGs, of $r_\mathrm{s} \geq 4$. In this work we perform a thorough analysis with xc model kernels for excitations of various nature. The uniform electron gas as a useful model of real metallic systems is used as a platform of our analysis. We highlight the relevance of exact constraints as we display and explain screening and excitations in the low-density region.

Abstract:We consider a planar Coulomb gas in which the external potential is generated by a smeared uniform background of opposite-sign charge on a disk. This model can be seen as a two-dimensional Wigner jellium, not necessarily charge-neutral, and with particles allowed to exist beyond the support of the smeared charge. The full space integrability condition requires a low enough temperature or high enough total smeared charge. This condition does not allow, at the same time, total charge-neutrality and determinantal structure. The model shares similarities with both the complex Ginibre ensemble and the Forrester–Krishnapur spherical ensemble of random matrix theory. In particular, for a certain regime of temperature and total charge, the equilibrium measure is uniform on a disk as in the Ginibre ensemble, while the modulus of the farthest particle has heavy-tailed fluctuations as in the Forrester–Krishnapur spherical ensemble. We also touch upon a higher temperature regime producing a crossover equilibrium measure, as well as a transition to Gumbel edge fluctuations. More results in the same spirit on edge fluctuations are explored by the second author together with Raphael Butez.

Abstract:The many-body theory of a uniform electron gas was developed at the end of 1950ies. The Coulomb interaction between electrons was considered as a perturbation and the ground state energy was calculated in all orders of the non-degenerate perturbation theory. We show that the ground state of the unperturbed system is actually strongly degenerate and that the degenerate perturbation theory leads to lower values of the ground state energy.

Ground state phases of the two-dimension electron gas with a unified variational approach

Abstract:The two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) is a fundamental model, which is drawing increasing interest because of recent advances in experimental and theoretical studies of 2D materials. Current understanding of the ground state of the 2DEG relies on quantum Monte Carlo calculations, based on variational comparisons of different ansatze for different phases. We use a single variational ansatz, a general backflow-type wave function using a message-passing neural quantum state architecture, for a unified description across the entire density range. The variational optimization consistently leads to lower ground-state energies than previous best results. Transition into a Wigner crystal (WC) phase occurs automatically at rs = 37 +/- 1, a density lower than currently believed. Between the liquid and WC phases, the same ansatz and variational search strongly suggest the existence of intermediate states in a broad range of densities, with enhanced short-range nematic spin correlations.

Edge States on a Quantum Hall Liquid--Solid Interface

Abstract:We study the edge--states excitations of a droplet of quantum Hall liquid embedded in an electron (Wigner) solid. The presence of strong correlations between the liquid and solid sectors in the ground state is shown to be reflected in the density of states $D(E)$, associated with the excitations of the liquid--solid interface. We find that the prominent effect of these correlations is a suppression of $D(E)$ with respect to its value ($D_0(E)$) in the absence of the Wigner solid environment: $D(E) \sim e^{-\alpha |E|}D_0(E)$. The coefficient $\alpha$ (which is shown to vanish for a perfectly regular distribution of electron sites in the solid), is evaluated for two different realizations of an irregular distribution. We conclude that probing this effect (e.g. in a tunneling experiment), can provide evidence for correlated liquid--solid mixture states in quantum dots, or disordered samples, in very strong magnetic fields.

Abstract:For interacting electrons in solids, Heisenberg's equation is used to calculate the distribution in energy of transitions induced by adding an electron to an atomic-like spin orbital. This is the projected density of transitions which includes transitions between grounds states, as well as between other states differing by one electron. The energy of a ground state is then calculated as the sum of the least energies of transitions starting with the ground state of no electrons and adding one electron with each transition. This method is applied to the construction of ground states for a simple model of the hydrogen molecule, and to interaction effects on the relative cohesion of HCP and FCC structures of transition metals.

Quantum Hall Edges Beyond the Plasma Analogy

Abstract:We demonstrate that the plasma analogy is generally unreliable at predicting the edge properties of quantum Hall (QH) states, as it fails to account for the local edge velocity. This discrepancy arises from a fundamental difference between QH droplets and Coulomb gases (CGs): the former are incompressible liquids subject to area-preserving deformations, while the latter are governed by electrostatics and thus involve conformal transformations. We illustrate this QH/CG mismatch across various examples and show its impact on physical quantities, measurable in both solid-state samples and quantum simulators. Specifically, we discuss fluctuations of local observables and their connection to state-of-the-art microwave absorption experiments.

Configuration Path Integral Monte Carlo Approach to the Static Density Response of the Warm Dense Electron Gas

Abstract:Precise knowledge of the static density response function (SDRF) of the uniform electron gas (UEG) serves as key input for numerous applications, most importantly for density functional theory beyond generalized gradient approximations. Here we extend the configuration path integral Monte Carlo (CPIMC) formalism that was previously applied to the spatially uniform electron gas to the case of an inhomogeneous electron gas by adding a spatially periodic external potential. This procedure has recently been successfully used in permutation blocking path integral Monte Carlo simulations (PB-PIMC) of the warm dense electron gas [Dornheim \textit{et al.}, Phys. Rev. E in press, <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1706.00315" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1706.00315">arXiv:1706.00315</a>], but this method is restricted to low and moderate densities. Implementing this procedure into CPIMC allows us to obtain exact finite temperature results for the SDRF of the electron gas at \textit{high to moderate densities} closing the gap left open by the PB-PIMC data. In this paper we demonstrate how the CPIMC formalism can be efficiently extended to the spatially inhomogeneous electron gas and present the first data points. Finally, we discuss finite size errors involved in the quantum Monte Carlo results for the SDRF in detail and present a solution how to remove them that is based on a generalization of ground state techniques.

Abstract:In this work we continue and extend our recent work on the correlation energy of the quantized electron gas of uniform density at temperature $T=0$. As before we utilize the methods, properties, and results obtained by means of classical statistical mechanics. These were extended to quantized systems via the Feynman path integral formalism. The latter translates the quantum problem into a classical polymer problem in four dimensions. Again the well known RPA (random phase approximation) is recovered as a basic result which we then modify and improve upon. Here we will we focus upon thermodynamic self-consistency. Our numerical calculations exhibit a remarkable agreement with well known results of a standard parametrization of Monte Carlo correlation energies.

Neutral electronic excitations and derivative discontinuities: An extended $N$-centered ensemble density functional theory perspective

Abstract:This work merges two different types of many-electron ensembles, namely the Theophilou-Gross-Oliveira-Kohn ensembles of ground and neutrally-excited states, and the more recent $N$-centered ensembles of neutral and charged ground states. On that basis, an in-principle exact and general, so-called extended $N$-centered, ensemble density-functional theory of charged and neutral electronic excitations is derived. We revisit in this context the concept of density-functional derivative discontinuity for neutral excitations, without ever invoking nor using the asymptotic behavior of the ensemble electronic density. The present mathematical construction fully relies on the weight dependence of the ensemble Hartree-exchange-correlation density-functional energy, which makes the theory applicable to lattice models and opens new perspectives for the description of gaps in mesoscopic systems.

Abstract:It is shown that in adiabatic approximation for nuclei the many-component Coulomb system cannot be described on the basis of the grand canonical ensemble. Using the variational Bogolyubov's procedure for the free energy, the Hohenberg-Kohn theorem is proved in the canonical ensemble for inhomogeneous electron gas at finite temperature. The principal difference between consideration in the framework of quantum statistics in the canonical ensemble and quantum-mechanical consideration of a finite number of particles in infinite volume is established. The problem of universality of the density functional for describing the inhomogeneous electron density in a disordered nuclei field is considered.

Abstract:We study spatial correlations in the ground state of a one-dimensional electron gas coupled to a dynamic quantum impurity. The system displays a non-trivial many-body effect known as the Fermi edge singularity: transitions between discrete internal states of the impurity have a power-law dependence on the internal energies of the impurity states. We present compact formulas for the static current-current correlator and the pair correlation function. These reveal that spatial correlations induced by the impurity decay slowly (as the third inverse power of distance) and have a power-law energy dependence, characteristic of the Fermi edge singularity.

Abstract:A theory of scattering by charged dislocation lines in a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) is developed. The theory is directed towards understanding transport in AlGaN/GaN high-electron-mobility transistors (HEMT), which have a large number of line dislocations piercing through the 2DEG. The scattering time due to dislocations is derived for a 2DEG in closed form. This work identifies dislocation scattering as a mobility-limiting scattering mechanism in 2DEGs with high dislocation densities. The insensitivity of the 2DEG (as compared to bulk) to dislocation scattering is explained by the theory.
