Abstract:We discuss strong gravitational lensing by multiple objects along any line of sight. The probability for strong gravitational lensing by more than one lens is small, but a number of strong lens systems in which more than one separate lens contribute significantly to the lensing potential will be detected in the large sample of lens systems compiled with new instruments. Using multi-lens ray-tracing, we estimate the likelihood for gravitational lensing by two lenses at different redshifts and investigate typical image geometries and magnification cross sections. We find that, for a cosmology with Omega_M=0.3 and Omega_Lambda=0.7, about one in twenty lens systems consist of two lenses with merging caustics. Multiple lens systems differ from single lenses. They have a larger multiple imaging cross section and significantly differ in the image configuration. The external shear induced by a nearby galaxy, group or cluster can affect image positions even for more widely separated lens pairs. Both of these effects must be accounted for in lens modelling. We also show how the presence of aligned discs in the pair of lensing galaxies can lead to very large high-magnification cross sections. Multiple lens systems will be important in future, both for constraining lens models of individual systems and for statistical lensing.

Abstract:The degeneracy among the disk, bulge and halo contributions to galaxy rotation curves prevents an understanding of the distribution of baryons and dark matter in disk galaxies. In an attempt to break this degeneracy, we present an analysis of the spiral galaxy strong gravitational lens SDSS J2141-0001, discovered as part of the SLACS survey. We present new Hubble Space Telescope multicolor imaging, gas and stellar kinematics data derived from long-slit spectroscopy, and K-band LGS adaptive optics imaging, both from the Keck telescopes. We model the galaxy as a sum of concentric axisymmetric bulge, disk and halo components and infer the contribution of each component, using information from gravitational lensing and gas kinematics. This analysis yields a best-fitting total (disk plus bulge) stellar mass of log_{10}(Mstar/Msun) = 10.99(+0.11,-0.25). The photometric data combined with stellar population synthesis models yield log_{10}(Mstar/Msun) = 10.97\pm0.07, and 11.21\pm0.07 for the Chabrier and Salpeter IMFs, respectively. Accounting for the expected gas fraction of \simeq 20% reduces the lensing plus kinematics stellar mass by 0.10\pm0.05 dex, resulting in a Bayes factor of 11.9 in favor of a Chabrier IMF. The dark matter halo is roughly spherical, with minor to major axis ratio q_{halo}=0.91(+0.15,-0.13). The dark matter halo has a maximum circular velocity of V_{max}=276(+17,-18) km/s, and a central density parameter of log_{10}\Delta_{V/2}=5.9(+0.9,-0.5). This is higher than predicted for uncontracted dark matter haloes in LCDM cosmologies, log_{10}\Delta_{V/2}=5.2, suggesting that either the halo has contracted in response to galaxy formation, or that the halo has a higher than average concentration. At 2.2 disk scale lengths the dark matter fraction is f_{DM}=0.55(+0.20,-0.15), suggesting that SDSS J2141-0001 is sub-maximal.

Effective Models for Statistical Studies of Galaxy-Scale Gravitational Lensing

Abstract:We have worked out simple analytical formulae that accurately approximate the relationship between the position of the source with respect to the lens center and the amplification of the images, hence the lens cross section, for realistic lens profiles. We find that, for essentially the full range of parameters either observationally determined or yielded by numerical simulations, the combination of dark matter and star distribution can be very well described, for lens radii relevant to strong lensing, by a simple power-law whose slope is very weakly dependent on the parameters characterizing the global matter surface density profile and close to isothermal in agreement with direct estimates for individual lens galaxies. Our simple treatment allows an easy insight into the role of the different ingredients that determine the lens cross section and the distribution of gravitational amplifications. They also ease the reconstruction of the lens mass distribution from the observed images and, vice-versa, allow a fast application of ray-tracing techniques to model the effect of lensing on a variety of source structures. The maximum amplification depends primarily on the source size. Amplifications larger than ~20 are indicative of compact source sizes at high-z, in agreement with expectations if galaxies formed most of their stars during the dissipative collapse of cold gas. Our formalism has allowed us to reproduce the counts of strongly lensed galaxies found in the H-ATLAS SDP field. While our analysis is focussed on spherical lenses, we also discuss the effect of ellipticity and the case of late-type lenses (showing why they are much less common, even though late-type galaxies are more numerous). Furthermore we discuss the effect of a cluster halo surrounding the early-type lens and of a supermassive black hole at its center.

Strong gravitational lensing as a probe of dark matter

Abstract:Dark matter structures within strong gravitational lens galaxies and along their line of sight leave a gravitational imprint on the multiple images of lensed sources. Strong gravitational lensing provides, therefore, a key test of different dark matter models in a way that is independent of the baryonic content of matter structures on subgalactic scales. In this chapter, we describe how galaxy-scale strong gravitational lensing observations are sensitive to the physical nature of dark matter. We provide a historical perspective of the field, and review its current status. We discuss the challenges and advances in terms of data, treatment of systematic errors and theoretical predictions, that will enable one to deliver a stringent and robust test of different dark matter models in the near future. With the advent of the next generation of sky surveys, the number of known strong gravitational lens systems is expected to increase by several orders of magnitude. Coupled with high-resolution follow-up observations, these data will provide a key opportunity to constrain the properties of dark matter with strong gravitational lensing.

Gravitational Lensing by A Compound Population of Halos: Standard Models

Abstract:Based on observed rotation curves of galaxies and theoretical simulations of dark matter halos, there are reasons for believing that at least three different types of dark matter halos exist in the universe classified by their masses M and the inner slope of mass density -α: population A (galaxies): 1010 h-1 M☉ ≲ M ≲ 2 × 1013 h-1 M☉, α ≈ 2; population B (cluster halos): M ≳ 2 × 1013 h-1 M☉, α ≈ 1.3; and population C (dwarf halos): M ≲ 1010 h-1 M☉, α ≈ 1.3. In this paper we calculate the lensing probability produced by such a compound population of dark halos for both image separation and time delay, assuming that the mass function of halos is given by the Press-Schechter function and the universe is described by a cold dark matter (CDM) LCDM, OCDM, or SCDM model. The LCDM model is normalized to the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe observations; OCDM and SCDM models are normalized to the abundance of rich clusters. We compare the predictions of the different cosmological models with observational data and show that both LCDM and OCDM models are marginally consistent with the current available data, but the SCDM model is ruled out. The fit of the compound model to the observed correlation between splitting angle and time delay is excellent, but the fit to the number versus splitting angle relation is only adequate using the small number of sources in the objective Jodrell-VLA Astrometric Survey/Cosmic Lens All-Sky Survey. A larger survey of the same type would have great power in discriminating among cosmological models. Furthermore, population C in a LCDM model has a unique signature in the time domain, an additional peak at ~3 s potentially observable in GRBs, which makes it distinguishable from variants of CDM scenarios, such as warm dark matter, repulsive dark matter, or collisional dark matter. For image separations greater than 10'' the differently normalized LCDM models predict significantly different lensing probabilities, affording an additional lever to break the degeneracies in the CMB determination of cosmological parameters.
Imprints of dynamical dark energy on weak-lensing measurements

Abstract:We show that simple models of scalar-field dark energy leave a generic enhancement in the weak-lensing power spectrum when compared to the LCDM prediction. In particular, we calculate the linear-scale enhancement in the convergence (or cosmic-shear) power spectrum for two best-fit models of scalar-field dark energy, namely, the Ratra-Peebles and SUGRA-type quintessence. Our calculations are based on linear perturbation theory, using gauge-invariant variables with carefully defined adiabatic initial conditions. We find that geometric effects enhance the lensing power spectrum on a broad range of scales, whilst the clustering of dark energy gives rise to additional power on large scales. The dark-energy power spectrum for these models are also explicitly obtained. On degree scales, the total enhancement may be as large as 30-40% for sources at redshift ~1. We argue that there are realistic prospects for detecting such an enhancement using the next generation of large telescopes.

Gravitational Lensing of Spherically Symmetric Black Holes in Dark Matter Halos

Abstract:The gravitational lensing of supermassive black holes surrounded by dark matter halo has attracted a great number of interests in recent years. However, many studies employed simplified dark matter density models, which makes it very hard to give a precise prediction on the dark matter effects in real astrophysical galaxies. In this work, to more accurately describe the distribution of dark matter in real astrophysical galaxies, we study the gravitational lensing of black holes in astrophysical dark matter halo models (Beta, Burkert, Brownstein, and Moore). The deflection angle is obtained using a generalized Gibbons-Werner approach. The visual angular positions and the Einstein rings are also calculated by adopting the gravitational lens equation. Specifically, we choose the supermassive black holes in Milky Way Galaxy, Andromeda galaxy (M31), Virgo galaxy (M87), and ESO138-G014 galaxy as examples, including the corresponding fitted value of dark matter halos. The results suggest that the dark matter halo described by the Beta model has non-negligible influences on the gravitational deflection angle and gravitational lensing observations. However, the Burkert, Brownstein, and Moore models have relatively small influences on angular position of images and the Einstein ring.

Semi-Analytical Models for Lensing by Dark Halos: I. Splitting Angles

Abstract:We use the semianalytical approach to analyze gravitational lensing of remote quasars by foreground dark halos in various cold dark matter (CDM) cosmologies in order to determine the sensitivity of the predictions for probabilities of image separations to the input assumptions regarding the properties of halos and cosmological models. The power spectrum of primordial fluctuations is normalized by the cluster abundance constraints. The mass function of dark halos is assumed to be given by the Press-Schechter function. The mass density profile of dark halos is alternatively taken to be the singular isothermal sphere (SIS), the Navarro-Frenk-White (NFW) profile, or the generalized NFW profile. The cosmologies being considered include the Einstein-de Sitter model (SCDM), the open model (OCDM), and the flat Λ-model (LCDM). As expected, we find that the lensing probability is extremely sensitive to the mass density profile of lenses (dark halos) and somewhat less so to the mean mass density in the universe and the amplitude of primordial fluctuations. NFW halos are very much less effective in producing multiple images than SIS halos. For NFW lenses, the SCDM model produces fewer lensing events than the OCDM/LCDM models by 2 orders of magnitude. For SIS lenses, the SCDM model produces more lensing events with small splitting angles and fewer lensing events with large splitting angles than the OCDM/LCDM models, which is due to the fact that for large-mass halos, the Press-Schechter function is very sensitive to the amplitude of primordial fluctuations. In all cases the difference between the OCDM model and the LCDM model is not dramatic. None of these models are consistent with current observations: the SIS models predict too many large splitting lenses, while the NFW models predict too few small splitting lenses. Essentially, the observed high ratio of small splitting to large splitting lenses is not predicted correctly. This indicates that there must be at least two populations of halos in the universe: small-mass halos with a steep inner density slope and large-mass halos with a shallow inner density slope. A combination of SIS and NFW halos can reasonably reproduce the current observations if we choose the mass for the transition from SIS to NFW to be ~1013 M☉, as might plausibly occur because of baryonic cooling and contraction in lower mass systems. Additionally, there is a tendency for CDM models to have too much power on small scales, i.e., too much mass concentration. From our sensitivity studies it appears that the cures proposed for other apparent difficulties of CDM would help here as well, an example being the warm dark matter variant, which is shown to produce fewer large splitting lenses than the corresponding CDM model by 1 order of magnitude.
Constraining Dark Matter Halo Profiles and Galaxy Formation Models Using Spiral Arm Morphology. I. Method Outline

Abstract:We investigate the use of spiral arm pitch angles as a probe of disk galaxy mass profiles. We confirm our previous result that spiral arm pitch angles (P) are well correlated with the rate of shear (S) in disk galaxy rotation curves by using a much larger sample (51 galaxies) than used previously (17 galaxies). We use this correlation to argue that imaging data alone can provide a powerful probe of galactic mass distributions out to large look-back times. In contrast to previous work, we show that observed spiral arm pitch angles are similar when measured in the optical (at 0.4 mu m) and the near-infrared (at 2.1 mu m) with a mean difference of 2.degrees 3 +/- 2.degrees 7. This is then used to strengthen the known correlation between P and S using B-band images. We then use two example galaxies to demonstrate how an inferred shear rate coupled with a bulge-disk decomposition model and a Tully-Fisher-derived velocity normalization can be used to place constraints on a galaxy's baryon fraction and dark matter halo profile. We show that ESO 582-G12, a galaxy with a high shear rate (slightly declining rotation curve) at similar to 10 kpc, favors an adiabatically contracted halo, with high initial NFW concentration (c(vir) > 16) and a high fraction of halo baryons in the form of stars (similar to 15%-40%). In contrast, IC 2522 has a low shear rate (rising rotation curve) at similar to 10 kpc and favors non-adiabatically contracted models with low NFW concentrations (c(vir) similar or equal to 2-8) and a low stellar baryon fraction < 10%.

Abstract:We study moderate gravitational lensing where a background galaxy is magnified substantially, but not multiply imaged, by an intervening galaxy. We focus on the case where both the lens and source are elliptical galaxies. The signatures of moderate lensing include isophotal distortions and systematic shifts in the fundamental plane and Kormendy relation, which can potentially be used to statistically determine the galaxy mass profiles. These effects are illustrated using Monte Carlo simulations of galaxy pairs where the foreground galaxy is modelled as a singular isothermal sphere model and observational parameters appropriate for the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST). The range in radius probed by moderate lensing will be larger than that by strong lensing, and is in the interesting regime where the density slope may be changing.

Abstract:ABSTRACT The ΛCDM paradigm successfully explains the large-scale structure of the Universe, but is less well constrained on subgalactic scales. Gravitational lens modelling has been used to measure the imprints of dark substructures on lensed arcs, testing the small-scale predictions of ΛCDM. However, the methods required for these tests are subject to degeneracies among the lens mass model and the source light profile. We present a case study of the unique compound gravitational lens SDSSJ0946+1006, wherein a dark, massive substructure has been detected, whose reported high concentration would be unlikely in a ΛCDM universe. For the first time, we model the first two background sources in both I- and U-band HST imaging, as well as VLT-MUSE emission line data for the most distant source. We recover a lensing perturber at a 5.9σ confidence level with mass $\log _{10}(M_\mathrm{sub}/{\rm M}_{\odot })=9.2^{+0.4}_{-0.1}$ and concentration $\log _{10}c=2.4^{+0.5}_{-0.3}$. The concentration is more consistent with CDM subhaloes than previously reported, and the mass is compatible with that of a dwarf satellite galaxy whose flux is undetectable in the data at the location of the perturber. A wandering black hole with mass $\log _{10}(M_\mathrm{BH}/{\rm M}_{\odot })=8.9^{+0.2}_{-0.1}$ is a viable alternative model. We systematically investigate alternative assumptions about the complexity of the mass distribution and source reconstruction; in all cases the subhalo is detected at around the ≥5σ level. However, the detection significance can be altered substantially (up to 11.3σ) by alternative choices for the source regularization scheme.

Abstract:We use weak gravitational lensing to measure mean mass profiles around locally brightest galaxies (LBGs). These are selected from the Seventh Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey spectroscopic and photometric catalogues to be brighter than any neighbour projected within 1.0 Mpc and differing in redshift by < 1000 km s(-1). Most (>83 per cent) are expected to be the central galaxies of their dark matter haloes. Previous stacking analyses have used this LBG sample to measure mean Sunyaev-Zeldovich flux and mean X-ray luminosity as a function of LBG stellar mass. In both cases, a simulation of the formation of the galaxy population was used to estimate effective halo mass for LBGs of given stellar mass, allowing the derivation of scaling relations between the gas properties of haloes and their mass. By comparing results from a variety of simulations to our lensing data, we showthat this procedure has significant model dependence reflecting: (i) the failure of any given simulation to reproduce observed galaxy abundances exactly; (ii) a dependence on the cosmology underlying the simulation; and (iii) a dependence on the details of how galaxies populate haloes. We use our lensing results to recalibrate the scaling relations, eliminating most of this model dependence and explicitly accounting both for residual modelling uncertainties and for observational uncertainties in the lensing results. The resulting scaling relations link the mean gas properties of dark haloes to their mass over an unprecedentedly wide range, 10(12.5) < M-500/M-circle dot < 10(14.5), and should fairly and robustly represent the full halo population.
Strong Gravitational Lensing by Sgr A* and M87* Black Holes embedded in Dark Matter Halo exhibiting string cloud and quintessential field

Abstract:We investigate the strong gravitational lensing phenomena caused by a black hole with a dark matter halo. In this study, we examine strong gravitational lensing with two significant dark matter models: the universal rotation curve model and the cold dark matter model. To do this, we first numerically estimate the strong lensing coefficients and strong deflection angles for both the universal rotation curve and cold dark matter models. It is observed that the deflection angle, denoted as $\alpha_D$, increases with the parameter $\alpha$ while holding the value of $\gamma \cdot 2M$ constant. Additionally, it increases with the parameter $\gamma \cdot 2M$ while keeping the value of $\alpha$ constant. The strong deflection angle, $\alpha_D$, for the black hole with a dark matter halo, with parameters $\alpha=0$ and $\gamma \cdot 2M$, greatly enhances the gravitational bending effect and surpasses the corresponding case of the standard Schwarzschild black hole ($A=0, B=0, \alpha=0, \gamma \cdot 2M=0$). Furthermore, we investigate the astrophysical consequences through strong gravitational lensing observations, using examples of various supermassive black holes such as $M87^{*}$ and $SgrA^{*}$ located at the centers of several galaxies. It is observed that black holes with dark matter halos can be quantitatively distinguished and characterized from the standard Schwarzschild black hole ($A=0, B=0, \alpha=0, \gamma \cdot 2M=0$). The findings in our analysis suggest that observational tests for black holes influenced by dark matter halos are indeed feasible and viable.

Gravitational wave lensing as a probe of halo properties and dark matter

Abstract:Just like light, gravitational waves (GWs) are deflected and magnified by gravitational fields as they propagate through the Universe. However, their low frequency, phase coherence and feeble coupling to matter allow for distinct lensing phenomena, such as diffraction and central images, that are challenging to observe through electromagnetic sources. Here we explore how these phenomena can be used to probe features of gravitational lenses. We focus on two variants of the singular isothermal sphere, with 1) a variable slope of the matter density and 2) a central core. We describe the imprints of these features in the wave- and geometric-optics regimes, including the prospect of detecting central images. We forecast the capacity of LISA and advanced LIGO to study strongly lensed signals and measure the projected lens mass, impact parameter and slope or core size. A broad range of lens masses allows all parameters to be measured with precision up to $\sim 1/{\rm SNR}$, despite large degeneracies. Thanks to wave-optics corrections, all parameters can be measured, even when no central image forms. Although GWs are sensitive to projected quantities, we compute the probability distribution of lens redshift, virial mass and projection scale given a cosmology. As an application, we consider the prospect of constraining self-interacting and ultra-light dark matter, showing the regions of parameter space accessible to strongly-lensed GWs. The distinct GW signatures will enable novel probes of fundamental physics and astrophysics, including the properties of dark matter and the central regions of galactic halos.

The galaxy-galaxy strong lensing cross section and the internal distribution of matter in ΛCDM substructure

Abstract:Strong gravitational lensing offers a powerful probe of the detailed distribution of matter in lenses, while magnifying and bringing faint background sources into view. Observed strong lensing by massive galaxy clusters, which are often in complex dynamical states, has also been used to map their dark matter substructures on smaller scales. Deep high resolution imaging has revealed the presence of strong lensing events associated with these substructures, namely galaxy-scale sub-halos. However, an inventory of these observed galaxy-galaxy strong lensing (GGSL) events is noted to be discrepant with state-of-the-art {\Lambda}CDM simulations. Cluster sub-halos appear to be over-concentrated compared to their simulated counterparts yielding an order of magnitude higher value of GGSL. In this paper, we explore the possibility of resolving this observed discrepancy by redistributing the mass within observed cluster sub-halos in ways that are consistent within the {\Lambda}CDM paradigm of structure formation. Lensing mass reconstructions from data provide constraints on the mass enclosed within apertures and are agnostic to the detailed mass profile within them. Therefore, as the detailed density profile within cluster sub-halos currently remains unconstrained by data, we are afforded the freedom to redistribute the enclosed mass. We investigate if rearranging the mass to a more centrally concentrated density profile helps alleviate the GGSL discrepancy. We report that refitting cluster sub-halos to the ubiquitous {\Lambda}CDM-motivated Navarro-Frenk-White profile, and further modifying them to include significant baryonic components, does not resolve this tension. A resolution to this persisting GGSL discrepancy may require more careful exploration of alternative dark matter models.

Abstract:We study the effects on the number counts of submillimetre galaxies due to gravitational lensing. We explore the effects on the magnification cross-section due to halo density profiles, ellipticity and cosmological parameter (the power-spectrum normalization sigma(8)). We show that the ellipticity does not strongly affect the magnification cross-section in gravitational lensing while the halo radial profiles do. Since the baryonic cooling effect is stronger in galaxies than clusters, galactic haloes are more concentrated. In light of this, a new scenario of two-halo-population model is explored where galaxies are modelled as a singular isothermal sphere profile and clusters as a Navarro, Frenk and White profile. We find that the transition mass between the two has modest effects on the lensing probability. The cosmological parameter sigma(8) alters the abundance of haloes and therefore affects our results. Compared with other methods, our model is simpler and more realistic. The conclusions of previous works confirm that gravitational lensing is a natural explanation for the number count excess at the bright end.
A Strong Gravitational Lens Is Worth a Thousand Dark Matter Halos: Inference on Small-Scale Structure Using Sequential Methods

Abstract:Strong gravitational lenses are a singular probe of the universe's small-scale structure $\unicode{x2013}$ they are sensitive to the gravitational effects of low-mass $(<10^{10} M_\odot)$ halos even without a luminous counterpart. Recent strong-lensing analyses of dark matter structure rely on simulation-based inference (SBI). Modern SBI methods, which leverage neural networks as density estimators, have shown promise in extracting the halo-population signal. However, it is unclear whether the constraining power of these models has been limited by the methodology or the information content of the data. In this study, we introduce an accelerator-optimized simulation pipeline that can generate lens images with realistic subhalo populations in a matter of milliseconds. Leveraging this simulator, we identify the main methodological limitation of our fiducial SBI analysis: training set size. We then adopt a sequential neural posterior estimation (SNPE) approach, allowing us to iteratively refine the distribution of simulated training images to better align with the observed data. Using only one-fifth as many mock Hubble Space Telescope (HST) images, SNPE matches the constraints on the low-mass halo population produced by our best non-sequential model. Our experiments suggest that an over three order-of-magnitude increase in training set size and GPU hours would be required to achieve an equivalent result without sequential methods. While the full potential of the existing strong lens sample remains to be explored, the notable improvement in constraining power enabled by our sequential approach highlights that the current constraints are limited primarily by methodology and not the data itself. Moreover, our results emphasize the need to treat training set generation and model optimization as interconnected stages of any cosmological analysis using simulation-based inference techniques.

Gravitational Lensing in More Realistic Dark Matter Halo Models

Abstract:In this study, we investigate gravitational lensing within the framework of more realistic dark matter halo models, transcending the limitations of spherical-collapse approximations. Through analytical computations utilizing diverse mass functions, we address critical factors typically overlooked in the standard Press-Schechter formalism, including ellipsoidal-collapse conditions, angular momentum dynamics, dynamical friction, and the cosmological constant. Our analysis incorporates two widely recognized halo density profiles, the Navarro-Frenk-White and Einasto profiles, considering both spherical and ellipsoidal-collapse scenarios. We present relevant calculations of pivotal gravitational lensing observables, such as Einstein radii, lensing optical depths, and time delays, spanning a wide range of redshifts and masses across two distinct lensing models: the point mass and singular isothermal sphere (SIS) lens models. Our findings illuminate that adopting more realistic dark matter halo models leads to heightened lensing effects compared to their spherical-collapse counterparts. Furthermore, our analyses of lensing optical depths and time delays reveal distinct characteristics between point mass and SIS lens models. These outcomes highlight the need for more realistic halo descriptions instead of simple approximations when modeling gravitational lensing, as this approach can potentially better reveal the complex structures of dark matter.

Abstract:Strong gravitational lensing at the galaxy scale is a valuable tool for various applications in astrophysics and cosmology. The primary uses of galaxy-scale lensing are to study elliptical galaxies' mass structure and evolution, constrain the stellar initial mass function, and measure cosmological parameters. Since the discovery of the first galaxy-scale lens in the 1980s, this field has made significant advancements in data quality and modeling techniques. In this review, we describe the most common methods for modeling lensing observables, especially imaging data, as they are the most accessible and informative source of lensing observables. We then summarize the primary findings from the literature on the astrophysical and cosmological applications of galaxy-scale lenses. We also discuss the current limitations of the data and methodologies and provide an outlook on the expected improvements in both areas in the near future.
