Abstract:Previous studies have indicated the presence of a putative tumor suppressor gene on human chromosome 13q14, commonly deleted in patients with B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia (B-CLL). We have recently identified a minimally deleted region encompassing parts of two adjacent genes, termed LEU1 and LEU2 (leukemia-associated genes 1 and 2), and several additional transcripts. In addition, 50 kb centromeric to this region we have identified another gene, LEU5/RFP2. To elucidate further the complex genomic organization of this region, we have identified, mapped, and sequenced the homologous region in the mouse. Fluorescence in situ hybridization analysis demonstrated that the region maps to mouse chromosome 14. The overall organization and gene order in this region were found to be highly conserved in the mouse. Sequence comparison between the human deletion hotspot region and its homologous mouse region revealed a high degree of sequence conservation with an overall score of 74%. However, our data also show that in terms of transcribed sequences, only two of those, human LEU2 and LEU5/RFP2, are clearly conserved, strengthening the case for these genes as putative candidate B-CLL tumor suppressor genes.
Acceleration of Cosmic Ray Electrons at Weak Shocks in Galaxy Clusters

Abstract:According to structure formation simulations, weak shocks with typical Mach number, $M_{\rm s}\lesssim 3$, are expected to form in merging galaxy clusters. The presence of such shocks has been indicated by X-ray and radio observations of many merging clusters. In particular, diffuse radio sources known as radio relics could be explained by synchrotron-emitting electrons accelerated via diffusive shock acceleration (Fermi I) at quasi-perpendicular shocks. Here we also consider possible roles of stochastic acceleration (Fermi II) by compressive MHD turbulence downstream of the shock. Then we explore a puzzling discrepancy that for some radio relics, the shock Mach number inferred from the radio spectral index is substantially larger than that estimated from X-ray observations. This problem could be understood, if shock surfaces associated with radio relics consist of multiple shocks with different <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://strengths.In" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> that case, X-ray observations tend to pick up the part of shocks with lower Mach numbers and higher kinetic energy flux, while radio emissions come preferentially from the part of shocks with higher Mach numbers and higher cosmic ray (CR) production. We also show that the Fermi I reacceleration model with preexisting fossil electrons supplemented by Fermi II acceleration due to postshock turbulence could reproduce observed profiles of radio flux densities and integrated radio spectra of two giant radio relics. This study demonstrates the CR electrons can be accelerated at collisionless shocks in galaxy clusters just like supernova remnant shock in the interstellar medium and interplanetary shocks in the solar wind.

Abstract:Cosmological shock waves are induced during hierarchical formation of large-scale structure in the universe. Like most astrophysical shocks, they are collisionless, since they form in the tenuous intergalactic medium through electromagnetic viscosities. The gravitational energy released during structure formation is transferred by these shocks to the intergalactic gas as heat, cosmic-rays, turbulence, and magnetic fields. Here we briefly describe the properties and consequences of the shock waves in the context of the large-scale structure of the universe.

Shock Waves in Eulerian Cosmological Simulations: Main Properties and Acceleration of Cosmic Rays

Abstract:We analyze the properties of Large Scale Shocks in a cosmological volume of size 103Mpc/h simulated with the public 1.0.1 release of the ENZO code. Different methods to identify and characterize shocks in post processing are discussed together with their uncertainties. Re-ionization affects the properties of shocks in simulations, and we propose a fitting procedure to model accurately the effect of re-ionization in non--radiative simulations, with a post--processing procedure. We investigate the properties of shocks by means of a procedure which uses jumps in the velocity variables across the cells in the simulations and this allows us to have a viable description of shocks also in relatively under-dense cosmic regions. We derive the distributions of the number of shocks and of the energy dissipated at these shocks as a function of their Mach number, and discuss the evolution of these distributions with cosmological time and across different cosmic environments (clusters, outskirts, filaments, voids). In line with some previous numerical studies (e.g. Ryu et al.2003, Pfrommer et al.2006) relatively weak shocks are found to dominate the process of energy dissipation in the simulated cosmic volume, although we find a larger ratio between weak and strong shocks with respect to previous studies. We estimate the rate of injection of CR at Large Scale Shocks by adopting injection efficiencies taken from previous numerical calculations. The flux dissipated in the form of CR within the whole simulated volume at the present epoch is about 20 per cent of the thermal energy dissipated at shocks; this fraction is smaller within galaxy clusters.

Abstract:Radio relics detected in the outskirts of galaxy clusters are thought to trace radio-emitting relativistic electrons accelerated at cosmological shocks. In this study, using the cosmological hydrodynamic simulation data for the large-scale structure formation and adopting a diffusive shock acceleration (DSA) model for the production of cosmic-ray (CR) electrons, we construct mock radio and X-ray maps of simulated galaxy clusters that are projected in the sky plane. Various properties of shocks and radio relics, including the shock Mach number, radio spectral index and luminosity are extracted from the synthetic maps and compared with observations. A substantial fraction of radio and X-ray shocks identified in these maps involve multiple shock surfaces along line of sights (LoSs), and the morphology of shock distributions in the maps depends on the projection direction. Among multiple shocks in a given LoS, radio observations tend to pick up stronger shocks with flatter radio spectra, while X-ray observations preferentially select weaker shocks with larger kinetic energy flux. As a result, the shock Mach numbers and locations derived from radio and X-ray observations could differ from each other in some cases. We also find that the distributions of the spectral index and radio power of the synthetic radio relics are somewhat inconsistent with those of observed real relics; a bit more radio relics have been observed closer to the cluster core and with steeper spectral indices. We suggest the inconsistency could be explained, if very weak shocks with $M_s \la 2$ accelerate CR electrons more efficiently, compared to the DSA model adopted here.

Diffuse radio emission from clusters in the MareNostrum Universe simulation

Abstract:Large-scale diffuse radio emission is observed in some clusters of galaxies. There is ample of evidence that the emission has its origin in synchrotron losses of relativistic electrons, accelerated in the course of clusters mergers. In a cosmological simulation we locate the structure formation shocks and estimate their radio emission. We proceed as follows: Introducing a novel approach to identify strong shock fronts in an SPH simulation, we determine the Mach number as well as the downstream density and temperature in the MareNostrum Universe simulation which has 2x1024^3 particles in a 500 Mpc/h box and was carried out with non-radiative physics. Then, we estimate the radio emission using the formalism derived in Hoeft & Brueggen (2007) and produce artificial radio maps of massive clusters. Several of our clusters show radio objects with similar morphology to large-scale radio relics found in the sky, whereas about half of the clusters show only very little radio emission. In agreement with observational findings, the maximum diffuse radio emission of our clusters depends strongly on their X-ray temperature. We find that the so-called accretion shocks cause only very little radio emission. We conclude that a moderate efficiency of shock acceleration, namely xi_e <= 0.005, and moderate magnetic fields in the region of the relics, namely 0.07 to 0.8 muGauss are sufficient to reproduce the number density and luminosity of radio relics.

Abstract:Large-scale structure formation, accretion and merging processes, AGN activity produce cosmological gas shocks. The shocks convert a fraction of the energy of gravitationally accelerated flows to internal energy of the gas. Being the main gas-heating agent, cosmological shocks could amplify magnetic fields and accelerate energetic particles via the multi-fluid plasma relaxation processes. We first discuss the basic properties of standard single-fluid shocks. Cosmological plasma shocks are expected to be collisionless. We then review the plasma processes responsible for the microscopic structure of collisionless shocks. A tiny fraction of the particles crossing the shock is injected into the non-thermal energetic component that could get a substantial part of the ram pressure power dissipated at the shock. The energetic particles penetrate deep into the shock upstream producing an extended shock precursor. Scaling relations for postshock ion temperature and entropy as functions of shock velocity in strong collisionless multi-fluid shocks are discussed. We show that the multi-fluid nature of collisionless shocks results in excessive gas compression, energetic particle acceleration, precursor gas heating, magnetic field amplification and non-thermal emission. Multi-fluid shocks provide a reduced gas entropy production and could also modify the observable thermodynamic scaling relations for clusters of galaxies.

Abstract:We develop a formalism for the identification and accurate estimation of the strength of structure formation shocks during cosmological smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulations. Shocks play a decisive role not only for the thermalization of gas in virializing structures but also for the acceleration of relativistic cosmic rays (CRs) through diffusive shock acceleration. Our formalism is applicable both to ordinary non‐relativistic thermal gas, and to plasmas composed of CRs and thermal gas. To this end, we derive an analytic solution to the one‐dimensional Riemann shock tube problem for a composite plasma of CRs and thermal gas. We apply our methods to study the properties of structure formation shocks in high‐resolution hydrodynamic simulations of the Lambda cold dark matter (ΛCDM) model. We find that most of the energy is dissipated in weak internal shocks with Mach numbers which are predominantly central flow shocks or merger shock waves traversing halo centres. Collapsed cosmological structures are surrounded by external shocks with much higher Mach numbers up to , but they play only a minor role in the energy balance of thermalization. This is because of the higher pre‐shock gas densities within non‐linear structures, and the significant increase of the mean shock speed as the characteristic halo mass grows with cosmic time. We show that after the epoch of cosmic reionization the Mach number distribution is significantly modified by an efficient suppression of strong external shock waves due to the associated increase of the sound speed of the diffuse gas. Invoking a model for CR acceleration in shock waves, we find that the average strength of shock waves responsible for CR energy injection is higher than that for shocks that dominate the thermalization of the gas. This implies that the dynamical importance of shock‐injected CRs is comparatively large in the low‐density, peripheral halo infalling regions, but is less important for the weaker flow shocks occurring in central high‐density regions of haloes. When combined with radiative dissipation and star formation, our formalism can also be used to study CR injection by supernova shocks, or to construct models for shock‐induced star formation in the interstellar medium.

Abstract:Galaxy clusters are the largest gravitationally-bound structures in the Universe. As such, during merger events with similar systems, they release an enormous amount of energy that is dissipated through the formation of shock waves and turbulence in the intracluster medium (ICM), the hot ionised plasma permeating the cluster volume. These shock waves are believed to be ideal sites for electron acceleration that, in the presence of ubiquitous magnetic fields in the ICM, are capable of producing elongated non-thermal radio features typically observed in the outskirts of dynamically disturbed clusters, also known as radio relics. In this work, we analyse a hydrodynamical re-simulation of merging galaxy clusters, extracted from a large set of zoom-in cosmological simulations of The Three Hundred Project, to study the evolution and diversity of merger shocks and their associated diffuse radio emission within the framework of the diffusive shock acceleration scenario.

A multishock scenario for the formation of radio relics

Abstract:Radio relics are giant sources of diffuse synchrotron radio emission in the outskirts of galaxy clusters that are associated with shocks in the intracluster medium. Still, the origin of relativistic particles that make up relics is not fully understood. For most relics, diffusive shock acceleration (DSA) of thermal electrons is not efficient enough to explain observed radio fluxes. In this paper, we use a magneto-hydrodynamic simulation of galaxy clusters in combination with Lagrangian tracers to simulate the formation of radio relics. Using a Fokker-Planck solver to compute the energy spectra of relativistic electrons, we determine the synchrotron emission of the relic. We find that re-acceleration of fossil electrons plays a major role in explaining the synchrotron emission of radio relics. Particles that pass through multiple shocks contribute significantly to the overall luminosity of a radio relic and greatly boosts the effective acceleration efficiency. Furthermore, we find that the assumption that the luminosity of a radio relic can be explained with DSA of thermal electrons leads to an overestimate of the acceleration efficiency by a factor of more than $10^3$.

Abstract:Radio relics are synchrotron emission found on the periphery of galaxy clusters. From the position and the morphology, it is often believed that the relics are generated by cosmic-ray (CR) electrons accelerated at shocks through a diffusive shock acceleration (DSA) mechanism. However, some radio relics have harder spectra than the prediction of the standard DSA model. One example is observed in the cluster 1RXS J0603.3+4214, which is often called the ``Toothbrush Cluster''. Interestingly, the position of the relic is shifted from that of a possible shock. In this study, we show that these discrepancies in the spectrum and the position can be solved if turbulent (re)acceleration is very effective behind the shock. This means that for some relics turbulent reacceleration may be the main mechanism to produce high-energy electrons, contrary to the common belief that it is the DSA. Moreover, we show that for efficient reacceleration, the effective mean free path of the electrons has to be much smaller than their Coulomb mean free path. We also study the merging cluster 1E 0657-56 or the ``Bullet Cluster'', in which a radio relic has not been found at the position of the prominent shock ahead of the bullet. We indicate that a possible relic at the shock is obscured by the observed large radio halo that is generated by strong turbulence behind the shock. We propose a simple explanation if the morphological differences of radio emission among the Toothbrush, the Bullet, and the Sausage (CIZA J2242.8+5301) Clusters.

Acceleration of Cosmic Rays at Large Scale Cosmic Shocks in the Universe

Abstract:Cosmological hydrodynamic simulations of large scale structure in the universe have shown that accretion shocks and merger shocks form due to flow motions associated with the gravitational collapse of nonlinear structures. Estimated speed and curvature radius of these shocks could be as large as a few 1000 km/s and several Mpc, respectively. According to the diffusive shock acceleration theory, populations of cosmic-ray particles can be injected and accelerated to very high energy by astrophysical shocks in tenuous plasmas. In order to explore the cosmic ray acceleration at the cosmic shocks, we have performed nonlinear numerical simulations of cosmic ray (CR) modified shocks with the newly developed CRASH (Cosmic Ray Amr SHock) numerical code. We adopted the Bohm diffusion model for CRs, based on the hypothesis that strong Alfvén waves are self-generated by streaming CRs. The shock formation simulation includes a plasma-physics-based ``injection'' model that transfers a small proportion of the thermal proton flux through the shock into low energy CRs for acceleration there. We found that, for strong accretion shocks, CRs can absorb most of shock kinetic energy and the accretion shock speed is reduced up to 20 %, compared to pure gas dynamic shocks. For merger shocks with small Mach numbers, however, the energy transfer to CRs is only about 10-20 % with an associated CR particle fraction of $10^{-3}$. Nonlinear feedback due to the CR pressure is insignificant in the latter shocks. Although detailed results depend on models for the particle diffusion and injection, these calculations show that cosmic shocks in large scale structure could provide acceleration sites of extragalactic cosmic rays of the highest energy.

A formation mechanism for "Wrong Way" Radio Relics

Abstract:Radio Relics are typically found to be arc-like regions of synchrotron emission in the outskirts of merging galaxy clusters, bowing out from the cluster center. In most cases they show synchrotron spectra that steepen towards the cluster center, indicating that they are caused by relativistic electrons being accelerated at outwards traveling merger shocks. A number of radio relics break with this ideal picture and show morphologies that are bent the opposite way and show spectral index distributions which do not follow expectations from the ideal picture. We propose that these `Wrong Way' Relics can form when an outwards travelling shock wave is bent inwards by an in-falling galaxy cluster or group. We test this in an ultra-high resolution zoom-in simulation of a massive galaxy cluster with an on-the-fly spectral Cosmic Ray model. This allows us to study not only the synchrotron emission at colliding shocks, but also their synchrotron spectra to adress the open question of relics with strongly varying spectral indices over the relic surface.

Shock Structure and Magnetic Fields Generation Associated with Relativistic Jets Unmagnetized Pair Plasma

Abstract:Using 3D and 2D particle-in-cell simulations we investigate a shock structure, magnetic field generation, and particle acceleration associated with an unmagnetized relativistic electron-positron jet propagating into an unmagnetized pair plasma. The simulations use long computational grids which allow to study the formation and dynamics of the system in a spatial and temporal way. We find for the first time a relativistic shock system comparable to a predicted magnetohydrodynamic shock structure consisting of leading and trailing shocks separated by a contact discontinuity. Strong electromagnetic fields resulting from the Weibel two-stream instability are generated in the trailing shock where jet matter is thermalized and decelerated. We analyze the formation and nonlinear development through saturation and dissipation of those fields and associated particle acceleration. In the AGN context the trailing shock corresponds to the jet shock at the head of a relativistic astrophysical jet. In the GRB context this trailing shock can be identified with the bow shock driven by relativistic ejecta. The strong electromagnetic field region in the trailing shock provides the emission site for the hot spot at the leading edge of AGN jets and for afterglow emission from GRBs.

Abstract:Radio relics are giant ($\sim$Mpc) synchrotron sources that are believed to be produced by the (re)acceleration of cosmic-ray electrons (CRe) by shocks in the intracluster medium. In this numerical study, we focus on the possibility that some radio relics may arise when electrons undergo diffusive shock acceleration at multiple shocks in the outskirts of merging galaxy clusters. This multi-shock (MS) scenario appears viable to produce CRe that emit visible synchrotron emission. We show that electrons that have been shocked multiple times develop an energy spectrum that significantly differs from the power-law spectrum expected in the case of a single shock scenario. As a consequence, the radio emission generated by CRe that shocked multiple times is higher than the emission produced by CRe that are shocked only once. In the case explored in this paper, the radio emission produced in the two scenarios differ by one order of magnitude. In particular in the MS scenario, the simulated relic follows a KGJP spectral shape, consistent with observation. Furthermore, the produced radio emission is large enough to be detectable with current radio telescopes (e.g. LOFAR, JVLA).

Abstract:Galaxy cluster merger shocks are the main agent for the thermalization of the intracluster medium and the energization of cosmic ray particles in it. Shock propagation changes the state of the tenuous intracluster plasma, and the corresponding signal variations are measurable with the current generation of X-ray and Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect instruments. Additionally, non-thermal electrons (re-)energized by the shocks sometimes give rise to extended and luminous synchrotron sources known as radio relics, which are prominent indicators of shocks propagating roughly in the plane of the sky. In this short review, we discuss how the joint modeling of the non-thermal and thermal signal variations across radio relic shock fronts is helping to advance our knowledge of the gas thermodynamical properties and magnetic field strengths in the cluster outskirts. We describe the first use of the SZ effect to measure the Mach numbers of relic shocks, for both the nearest (Coma) and the farthest (El Gordo) clusters with known radio relics.

Zooming-in on cluster radio relics -- I. How density fluctuations explain the Mach number discrepancy, microgauss magnetic fields, and spectral index variations

Abstract:It is generally accepted that radio relics are the result of synchrotron emission from shock-accelerated electrons. Current models, however, are still unable to explain several aspects of their formation. In this paper, we focus on three outstanding problems: i) Mach number estimates derived from radio data do not agree with those derived from X-ray data, ii) cooling length arguments imply a magnetic field that is at least an order of magnitude larger than the surrounding intracluster medium (ICM), and iii) spectral index variations do not agree with standard cooling models. To solve these problems, we first identify typical shock conditions in cosmological simulations, using the results to inform significantly higher resolution shock-tube simulations. We apply the cosmic ray electron spectra code CREST and the emission code CRAYON+ to these, thereby generating mock observables ab-initio. We identify that upon running into an accretion shock, merger shocks generate a shock-compressed sheet, which, in turn, runs into upstream density fluctuations in pressure equilibrium. This mechanism directly gives rise to solutions to the three problems: it creates a distribution of Mach numbers at the shock-front, which flattens cosmic ray electron spectra, thereby biasing radio-derived Mach number estimates to higher values. We show that this effect is particularly strong in weaker shocks. Secondly, the density sheet becomes Rayleigh-Taylor unstable at the contact discontinuity, causing turbulence and additional compression downstream. This amplifies the magnetic field from ICM-like conditions up to microgauss levels. We show that synchrotron-based measurements are strongly biased by the tail of the distribution here too. Finally, the same instability also breaks the common assumption that matter is advected at the post-shock velocity downstream, thus invalidating laminar-flow based cooling models.

Detailed observations of radio relics in total intensity and in polarisation show complex structures on kiloparsec scales. The relation between the observed features and the underlying morphology of the magnetic field is not clear. Using three-dimensional magneto-hydrodynamical simulations, we study the polarised emission produced by a shock wave that propagates through a turbulent medium that resembles the intracluster medium. We model the polarised synchrotron emission on the basis of diffusive shock acceleration of cosmic-ray electrons. We find that the synchrotron emission produced in a shocked turbulent medium can reproduce some of the observed features in radio relics. Shock compression can give rise to a high polarisation fraction at the shock front and a partial alignment of the polarisation $E$-vectors with the shock normal. Our work confirms that radio relics can also be formed in an environment with a tangled magnetic field. We also discuss the effect of Faraday Rotation intrinsic to the source, and how our results depend on the angular resolution of observations.

Abstract:Recent observations have revealed detailed structures of radio relics in a wide range of frequencies. In this work, we perform three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamical simulations of merger shocks propagating through a turbulent magnetized intracluster medium, and employ on-the-fly Lagrangian particles to explore the physical processes originating radio substructures and their appearances in high and low-frequency observations. We employ two cosmic-ray (CR) electron acceleration models: the fresh injection of electrons from the thermal pool and the re-acceleration of mildly relativistic electrons. We use the relative surface brightness fluctuations, $\delta S_{\nu}$, to define a "degree of patchiness''. We find that: 1) Patchiness is produced if the shock's surface has a distribution of Mach numbers, rather than a single Mach number; 2) Radio relics appear patchier if the Mach number distribution consists of a large percentage of low Mach numbers ($\mathcal{M}\lesssim2.5$); 3) As the frequency increases, the patchiness also becomes larger. Nevertheless, if radio relics are patchy at high frequencies (e.g., 18.6 GHz), they are necessarily also at low frequencies (e.g., 150 MHz); 4) To produce noticeable differences in the patchiness at low and high frequencies, the shock front should have a Mach number spread of $\sigma_{\mathcal{M}}\gtrsim0.3$-0.4; 5) The amount of the patchiness depends on the Mach number distribution as well as the CR acceleration model. We propose $\delta S_{\nu}$ as a potential tool for extracting merger shock properties and information about particle acceleration processes at shocks in radio observations.
