Abstract:Effective chiral theory of mesons is applied to study the four decay modes of $\tau\to\rho\pi\pi\nu$. Theoretical values of the branching ratios are in agreement with the data. The theory predicts that the $a_{1}$ resonance plays a dominant role in these decays. There is no new parameter in this study.

Abstract:In this work, we make a study of the $\tau^- \to \omega\pi^-\nu_\tau$ decay in the framework of low-energy effective field theory. The $J^{\mathcal{P}G}$ decompositions of the quark currents and the $\omega\pi$ final state show that, besides the Standard Model vector interaction, only the non-standard tensor interaction can have a non-zero contribution to the decay. To discuss its effect, a reliable calculation of the $\omega\pi$ tensor form factors is necessary. After constructing the Lagrangian of resonance chiral theory with external tensor sources, we calculate both the vector and tensor form factors with the relevant resonance couplings determined by combining the QCD short-distance constraints, the fit to the spectral function of $\tau^- \to \omega\pi^-\nu_\tau$ decay, as well as the matching between the $\mathcal{O}(p^4)$ odd-intrinsic-parity operators after integrating out the vector resonances and the $\mathcal{O}(p^6)$ operators of chiral perturbation theory. The new physics effect is then investigated in the distributions of the spectral function and the forward-backward asymmetry of $\tau^- \to \omega\pi^-\nu_\tau$ decay. We find that the spectral function is dominated by the Standard Model, and the non-standard tensor contribution is negligible. However, since the forward-backward asymmetry can be only generated with a non-zero tensor interaction, the observable is quite sensitive to this kind of new physics. A future measurement of the observable at the Belle II experiment as well as at the proposed Tera-Z and STCF facilities is, therefore, strongly called for to check the existence of such a non-standard tensor interaction.

Abstract:We study the $\ensuremath{\rho}\ensuremath{\pi}$ and ${b}_{1}\ensuremath{\pi}$ decay modes of the ${1}^{\ensuremath{-}+}$ light hybrid state within the framework of light-cone QCD sum rules. We use both the tensor current $\overline{\ensuremath{\psi}}{\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{\ensuremath{\mu}\ensuremath{\nu}}\ensuremath{\psi}$ and the derivative current $\overline{\ensuremath{\psi}}{\stackrel{\ensuremath{\leftrightarrow}}{D}}_{\ensuremath{\mu}}{\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{5}\ensuremath{\psi}$ as interpolating currents to calculate the partial decay width of the ${b}_{1}\ensuremath{\pi}$ decay mode. Comparing the sum rules obtained by using different currents, we obtain $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}({\ensuremath{\pi}}_{1}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{b}_{1}\ensuremath{\pi})=8--23$, 32--86 and 52--151 MeV for ${m}_{{1}^{\ensuremath{-}+}}=1.6$, 1.8 and 2.0 GeV respectively, which favor the results from the flux tube models and lattice simulations. We also use the tensor current to study the $\ensuremath{\rho}\ensuremath{\pi}$ decay mode, and although an extended stability criterion is needed, our results suggest a small partial decay width.

Abstract:Motivated by our previous work [Phys. Rev. D \textbf{104}, no.1, 016021 (2021)] on pionic leading-twist distribution amplitude (DA), we revisit $\rho$-meson leading-twist longitudinal DA $\phi_{2;\rho}^\|(x,\mu)$ in this paper. A model proposed by Chang based on the Dyson-Schwinger equations (DSEs) is adopted to describe the behavior of $\phi_{2;\rho}^\|(x,\mu)$. On the other hand, the $\xi$-moments of $\phi_{2;\rho}^\|(x,\mu)$ are calculated with the QCD sum rules in the framework of the background field theory. The sum rule formula for those moments are improved. More accurate values for the first five nonzero $\xi$-moments at typical scale $\mu =1, 1.4, 2, 3~{\rm GeV}$ are given, e.g., at $\mu = 1~{\rm GeV}$, \modi{$\langle\xi^2\rangle_{2;\rho}^\| = 0.220(6) $, $\langle\xi^4\rangle_{2;\rho}^\| = 0.103(4)$, $\langle\xi^6\rangle_{2;\rho}^\| = 0.066(5)$, $\langle\xi^8\rangle_{2;\rho}^\| = 0.046(4)$ and $\langle\xi^{10}\rangle_{2;\rho}^\| = 0.035(3)$}. By fitting those values with the least squares method, the DSE model for $\phi_{2;\rho}^\|(x,\mu)$ is determined. By taking the left-handed current light-cone sum rule approach, we get the transition form factor at large recoil region, {\it i.e.} $A_1(0) = 0.498^{+0.014}_{-0.012}$, $A_2(0)=0.460^{+0.055}_{-0.047}$, $V(0) = 0.800^{+0.015}_{-0.014}$, and the ratio $r_2 = 0.923^{+0.133}_{-0.119}$, $r_V = 1.607^{+0.071}_{-0.071}$. After making the extrapolation with a rapidly converging series based on $z(t)$-expansion, we present the decay width for the semileptonic decays $D\to\rho\ell^+\nu_\ell$. Finally, the branching fractions are $\mathcal{B}(D^0\to \rho^- e^+ \nu_e) = 1.889^{+0.176}_{-0.170}\pm 0.005$, $\mathcal{B}(D^+ \to \rho^0 e^+ \nu_e) = 2.380^{+0.221}_{-0.214}\pm 0.012$, $\mathcal{B}(D^0\to \rho^- \mu^+ \nu_\mu) = 1.881^{+0.174}_{-0.168}\pm 0.005$, $\mathcal{B}(D^+ \to \rho^0 \mu^+ \nu_\mu) =2.369^{+0.219}_{-0.211}\pm 0.011$.

Study of $B\rightarrow ρη$, $ρη^{\prime}$ decays in the modified perturbative QCD approach

Abstract:We study the decay processes of $B\rightarrow \rho\eta$, $\rho\eta^{\prime}$ in perturbative QCD approach with a few improvements incorproated in it, where the contributions with large momentum transfer are calculated perturbatively, and the contributions with lower energy scale are treated by introuducing soft transition form factors. In addition, color-octet conributions are introduced which are essentially long-distance contributions. With resonanble input parameters selected, we find that the theoretical results of the branching ratios and $CP$ violations are all consistent with experimental data. We also predict some unmeasured quantities, which can be tested by experiment in the future.

Abstract:The enhancement mechanism due to the resonant properties of the $\rho$ and $\omega$ mesons, which are close in mass, are analysed when such resonances carry different momenta. Considerations from the particular process where they appear to the individual resonant features are at play for the appearance of the global resonant manifestation. In this work, we first consider the $e^+e^- \to \pi^0 \pi^0 \gamma$ process. We use the differential cross section at a given angle of emission of one of the pions, to tune the individual features of the two resonances and exhibit how both resonances combine to produce the enhancement. Then, we incorporate the $\rho^\prime$ using the information obtained from the $ e^+e^- \to \pi^0 \pi^0 \gamma$ total scattering process and show that, it becomes important thanks to the same enhancement mechanism between the $\rho$ and the $\omega$. In a second step, we use a similar approach to describe a model dependent contribution to the $\tau^- \to \pi^-\pi^0\nu_\tau\gamma$ decay, the so-called $\omega$ channel. We show that the dipion invariant mass distribution at particular angles is sensitive to the individual resonant states. We compute the interference of this channel with the known dominant model independent contribution, and show how a better knowledge of the $e^+e^- \to \pi^0 \pi^0 \gamma$ process can help to properly account for such model dependent effects. The implication on the isospin symmetry breaking correction to tau-based estimates of the muon magnetic dipole moment is assessed.

Abstract:Hadronic decays rates of the $\tau$ lepton into multi meson final states are presented. The structure of the hadronic matrix elements for various decay modes is discussed. The formalism of structure functions allows for a detailed test of these matrix elements. Various correlations are discussed which are sensitive to possible CP violation and new physics effects in the decay modes.

Study of four-body decays $B_{(s)} \to (ππ)(ππ)$ in the perturbative QCD approach

Abstract:In this work, we make a systematical study on the four-body $B_{(s)} \to (\pi\pi)(\pi\pi)$ decays in the perturbative QCD approach, where the $\pi\pi$ invariant mass spectra are dominated by the vector resonance $\rho(770)$ and the scalar resonance $f_0(980)$. We improve the Gengenbauer moments for the longitudinal $P$-wave two-pion distribution amplitudes (DAs) by fitting the PQCD factorization formulas to measured branching ratios of three-body and four-body $B$ decays. With the fitted Gegenbauer moments, we make predictions for the branching ratios and direct $CP$ asymmetries of four-body $B_{(s)} \to (\pi\pi)(\pi\pi)$ decays. We extract the branching ratios of two-body $B_{(s)} \to \rho\rho$ from the corresponding four-body decay modes and calculate the relevant polarization fractions. We find that the ${\cal B}(B^0 \to \rho^+\rho^-)$ is consistent with the previous theoretical predictions and data. The leading-order PQCD calculations of the ${\cal B}(B^+\to \rho^+\rho^0)$, ${\cal B}(B^0\to \rho^0\rho^0)$ and the $f_0(B^0\to \rho^0\rho^0)$ are a bit lower than the experimental measurements, which should be further examined. In addition, the "true" and "fake" triple-product asymmetries (TPAs) in the $B_{(s)}\to (\pi\pi)(\pi\pi)$ decays are also analyzed. The sizable averaged TPA ${\cal A}_{\text{T-true}}^{1, \text{ave}}=25.26\%$ of the color-suppressed decay $B^0\to \rho^0\rho^0 \to (\pi^+\pi^-)(\pi^+\pi^-)$ is predicted for the first time, which deviates a lot from the so-called "true" TPA $\mathcal{A}_\text{T-true}^1=7.92\%$ due to the large direct $CP$ violation. A large "fake" TPA $\mathcal{A}_\text{T-fake}^1=24.96\%$ of the decay $B^0\to \rho^0\rho^0 \to (\pi^+\pi^-)(\pi^+\pi^-)$ is also found, which indicates the significance of the final-state interactions. The predictions in this work can be tested by LHCb and Belle-II experiments in the near future.

Abstract:The semitauonic decay provides an ideal and clean mode to scrutinize possible new physics effects in transitions as indicated by the current data on R ( D (*) ) anomalies. In this work, we use the spin density matrix method to obtain the maximum information on the underlying physics of decay with both polarized τ lepton and J/ψ meson. Their subsequent decays, with J/ψ → μ + μ − as well as τ − → π − ν τ , τ − → ρ − ν τ and , are exploited to extract the energy and angular distributions of the charged final-state particles in the processes. Starting with the most general effective Hamiltonian relevant for the transitions, including all possible Lorentz structures of the dimension-six operators with both left- and right-handed neutrinos, we first derive the five-fold differential decay rate in terms of the visible final-state kinematics. From this distribution, we then construct in total 34 normalized observables, among which nine refer to the CP-violating triple product asymmetries that vanish within the Standard Model. We also construct five new observables based on the combinations of these normalized observables that can only be attributed to the right-handed neutrinos. On the other hand, considering the low statistics of the fully differential distribution, we introduce some integrated observables with only one kinematic variable left, which are more promising to be measured due to the largely increased statistics. The sensitivities of all these observables to the different new physics scenarios are investigated in detail. Finally, assuming an ideal circumstance, we give an estimate of the statistical uncertainties of the nine CP-conserving observables at LHCb and found that τ − → π − ν τ has the highest analyzing power among the three τ decay channels.

Abstract:Within the framework of dispersion theory, we study the the processes $e^+e^-\to \phi(2170) \to \phi \pi\pi(K\bar{K})$. The strong pion-pion final-state interactions, especially the $K\bar{K}$ coupled channel in the $S$-wave, are taken into account in a model-independent way using the Omnès function solution. Through fitting the experimental data of the $\pi\pi$ and $\phi\pi$ invariant mass distributions of the $e^+e^- \to \phi(2170) \to \phi \pi^+\pi^-$ process, the low-energy constants in the chiral Lagrangian are determined. The theoretical prediction for the cross sections ratio ${\sigma(e^+e^- \to \phi(2170)\to \phi K^+ K^-)}/{\sigma(e^+e^- \to \phi(2170)\to \phi\pi^+\pi^-)}$ is given, which could be useful for selecting the physical solution when the fit to the $e^+e^- \to \phi K^+ K^-$ cross section distribution is available in the future. Our results suggest that above the kinematical threshold of $\phi K\bar{K}$, the mechanism $e^+e^- \to \phi K^+ K^-$ with the kaons rescattering to a pion pair plays an important role in the $e^+e^- \to \phi\pi^+\pi^-$ transition.

Investigation for $D^+ \to π^+ ν\barν$ decay process within QCDSR approach

Abstract:In the paper, we investigate the charmed meson rare decay process $D^+ \to \pi^+\nu\bar\nu$ by using QCD sum rules approach. Firstly, the pion twist-2 and twist-3 distribution amplitude $\xi$-moments $\langle\xi_{2;\pi}^n\rangle|_\mu$ up to 10th-order and $\langle \xi_{3;\pi}^{(p,\sigma),n}\rangle|_\mu$ up to fourth-order are calculated by using QCD sum rule under background field theory. After constructing the light-cone harmonic oscillator model for pion twist-2, 3 DAs, we get their behaviors by matching the calculated $\xi$-moments. Then, the $D\to \pi$ transition form factors are calculated by using QCD light-cone sum rules approach. The vector form factor at large recoil region is $f_+^{D\to\pi}(0) = 0.627^{+0.120} _{-0.080}$. By taking the rapidly $z(q^2,t)$ converging simplified series expansion, we present the TFFs and the corresponding angular coefficients in the whole squared momentum transfer physical region. Furthermore, we display the semileptonic decay process $\bar D^0 \to \pi^+ e\bar \nu_e$ differential decay widths and branching fraction with ${\cal B}(\bar D^0\to\pi^+e\bar\nu_e) = 0.308^{+0.155}_{-0.066} \times 10^{2}$. The $\bar D^0\to\pi^+e\bar\nu_e$ differential/total predictions for forward-backward asymmetry, $q^2$-differential flat terms and lepton polarization asymmetry are also given. After considering the non-standard neutrino interactions, the predictions for the $D^+ \to \pi^+ \nu\bar\nu$ branching fraction is ${\cal B}(D^+ \to \pi^+ {\nu }{\bar\nu}) = 1.85^{+0.93}_{-0.46}\times10^{-8}$.

Abstract:The $\tau^- \to \pi^-\eta\nu_{\tau}$ decay is forbidden in the Standard Model in the limit of exact $G$-parity, it becomes a rare decay due to isospin symmetry breaking and it is very sensitive to the effects of effective scalar interactions. Since the parameters driving isospin breaking, $(m_d-m_u)/(m_s-\bar{m})$ and $\alpha$, are of the same order, one may expect their $G$-parity breaking effects in this decay can be of similar magnitudes. In this work, we evaluate the effects of isospin-breaking amplitudes originated from a virtual photon at one-loop in a resonance dominance model to describe photon-hadron interactions. We find that these effects can shift the leading SM predictions based on the $u-d$ quark mass difference by roughly $12\%$, and should be taken into consideration in a precision comparison of theory and experiment in order to draw meaningful conclusions on New Physics. The effects in the rate of the analogous $\tau^- \to \pi^-\eta'\nu_{\tau}$ decay can be larger ($\sim$ $78\%$), under the approximations assumed in this model.

Abstract:Very recently, the {\it BABAR} Collaboration indicated that there exist an explicit enhancement structure near 2.2 GeV when focusing on the $e^+e^-\to\pi^+\pi^-$ process again, which inspires our interest in studying the production of higher $\rho$ mesonic states. Since the branching ratio of $\pi^+\pi^-$ channel of $D-$wave $\rho$ states are much smaller than $S-$wave states, we choose $\rho(1900)$ and $\rho(2150)$ as the intermediate states in $e^+e^-\to\pi^+\pi^-$, where $\rho(1900)$ and $\rho(2150)$ are treated as $\rho(3S)$ and $\rho(4S)$ states, respectively. Our result indicates that the $BABAR$'s data of $e^+e^-\to\pi^+\pi^-$ around 2 GeV can be depicted well, which shows that this enhancement structure near 2.2 GeV existing in $e^+e^-\to\pi^+\pi^-$ can be due to the contribution from two $\rho$ mesons, $\rho(1900)$ and $\rho(2150)$. Additionally, this conclusion can be enforced by the consistence of the extracted values of $\Gamma_{e^+e^-}\mathcal{B}(\pi^+\pi^-)$ of $\rho(1900)$ and $\rho(2150)$ in the whole fitting processes and the corresponding theoretical calculations. The present study of $e^+e^-\to\pi^+\pi^-$ data may provide valuable information to establish the $\rho$ meson family.
Study of the $B^{+}\toπ^{+}\left(π^{+}π^{-}\right)$ decay in PQCD Approach

Abstract:Based on the fitting results of the LHCb collaboration on the contributions of various intermediate resonances to the $B^{+}\to\pi^{+}\pi^{+}\pi^{-}$ decay, we make systematically calculate the branching fractions and localized $CP$ asymmetries of the quasi-two-body $B^{+}\to \pi^{+} \left( \rho(770), \omega(782), \rho(1450), f_{2}\left(1270\right)\to\right)\pi^{+}\pi^{-}$ decays within the perturbative QCD (PQCD) approach. Our theoretical predictions for the branching fractions agree well with the data within the errors. In order to further test the framework of the three-body $B$ decays in PQCD and the wave functions of $\pi\pi$ pair, we also calculate the branching fractions of the corresponding two-body $B^{+}\to\pi^{+}\rho(770)$, $B^{+}\to\pi^{+}\omega(782)$ and $B^{+}\to\pi^{+}f_{2}\left(1270\right)$ decays under the narrow-width-approximation, which are in consistence with the experimental data. The direct $CP$ asymmetries of $B^{+}\to\pi^{+}(\rho(770/1450)\to) \pi^{+}\pi^{-}$ decays are found to be very small because these decay modes are tree-dominated. However, due to the large penguin contributions from the chiral enhanced annihilation diagrams, $B^{+}\to\pi^{+} (f_{2}\left(1270\right)\to )\pi^{+}\pi^{-}$ decay has a large direct $CP$ asymmetry, which is also discovered by LHCb collaboration. A relatively large $CP$ asymmetry is also expected in the $B^+\to\pi^+ (\omega\to)\pi^+\pi^-$ decay occurring via $\rho-\omega$ mixing, which would be measured LHCb and Belle-II experiments in future.

Abstract:Within the effective Lagrangian approach, we carry out a unified study of the $J/\psi (\psi')\to VP$, $J/\psi \to P\gamma$ and relevant radiative decays of light-flavor hadrons. Large amount of experimental data, including the various decay widths and electromagnetic form factors, are fitted to constrain the numerous hadron couplings. Relative strengths between the strong and electromagnetic interactions are revealed in the $J/\psi \to VP$ and $\psi' \to VP$ processes. The effect from the strong interaction is found to dominate in the $J/\psi \to \rho\pi$ decay, while the electromagnetic interaction turns out to be the dominant effect in $\psi' \to \rho\pi$ decay, which provides an explanation to the $\rho\pi$ puzzle. For the $J/\psi\to K^{*}\bar{K}+\bar{K}^{*}K$ and $\psi' \to K^{*}\bar{K}+\bar{K}^{*}K$, the former process is dominated by the strong interactions, and the effects from the electromagnetic parts are found to be comparable with those of strong interactions in the latter process. Different $SU(3)$ breaking effects from the electromagnetic parts appear in the charged and neutral channels for the $\psi' \to K^{*}\bar{K}+\bar{K}^{*}K$ processes explain the rather different ratios between $B(\psi'\to K^{*+}K^{-}+K^{*-}K^{+})/B(J/\psi\to K^{*+}K^{-}+K^{*-}K^{+})$ and $B(\psi'\to K^{*0}\bar{K}^{0}+\bar{K}^{*0}K^{0})/B(J/\psi\to K^{*0}\bar{K}^{0}+\bar{K}^{*0}K^{0})$.

Radiative Decays of Charmonium into Light Mesons

Abstract:We apply perturbative QCD to the radiative decays of charmonia J/psi and chi cJ into light mesons. We perform a complete numerical calculation for the quark-gluon loop diagrams involved in these processes. The calculated J/psi decay branching ratios into p-wave mesons f(2)(1270) and f(1)(1285) fit the data well, while that of f(0)(980) (if treated as an ss meson) is predicted to be 1.6 x 10(-4), which implies that f(0)(1710) can not be the ss or (uu + dd)/root 2 meson. Decays of p-wave charmonia chi(cJ) -> rho(w,phi)gamma (J = 0,1,2) are also studied, and the branching ratio of chi(c1) -> rho gamma is predicted to be 1.4 x 10(-5), which may be tested by CLEO-c collaboration and BESII collaboration with future experiments.

Abstract:We study the $d^2 \Gamma_d /(d\omega d\cos\theta_d) $, $d\Gamma_d /d\cos\theta_d$ and $ d\Gamma_d /dE_d $ distributions, which are defined in terms of the visible energy and polar angle of the charged particle from the $\tau-$decay in $b\to c \tau\, (\mu \bar \nu_\mu \nu_\tau,\pi \nu_\tau,\rho\nu_\tau) \bar\nu_\tau$ reactions. The first two contain information on the transverse tau-spin, tau-angular and tau-angular-spin asymmetries of the $H_b\to H_c\tau\bar\nu_\tau$ parent decay and, from a dynamical point of view, they are richer than the commonly used one, $d^2 \Gamma_d /(d\omega dE_d) $, since the latter only depends on the tau longitudinal polarization. We pay attention to the deviations with respect to the predictions of the standard model (SM) for these new observables, considering new physics (NP) operators constructed using both right- and left-handed neutrino fields, within an effective field-theory approach. We present results for $\Lambda_b\to\Lambda_c\tau\, (\mu \bar \nu_\mu \nu_\tau,\pi\nu_\tau,\rho\nu_\tau)\bar\nu_\tau$ and $\bar B \to D^{(*)}\tau\, (\mu \bar \nu_\mu \nu_\tau,\pi\nu_\tau,\rho\nu_\tau) \bar\nu_\tau$ sequential decays and discuss their use to disentangle between different NP models. In this respect, we show that $d\Gamma_d /d\cos\theta_d$, which should be measured with sufficiently good statistics, becomes quite useful, especially in the $\tau\to \pi \nu_\tau$ mode. The study carried out in this work could be of special relevance due to the recent LHCb measurement of the lepton flavor universality ratio ${\cal R}_{\Lambda_c}$ in agreement with the SM. The experiment identified the $\tau$ using its hadron decay into $\pi^-\pi^+\pi^-\nu_\tau$, and this result for ${\cal R}_{\Lambda_c}$, which is in conflict with the phenomenology from the $b$-meson sector, needs confirmation from other tau reconstruction channels.

Abstract:The decays $B\to\bar{D}^{(*)} \omega\pi$ are very important for the investigation of $\rho$ excitations and the test of factorization hypothesis for $B$ meson decays. The $B^{+}\to \bar{D}^{(*)0}\omega\pi^+$ and $B^{0}\to D^{(*)-}\omega\pi^+$ have been measured by different collaborations but without any predictions for their observables on theoretical side. In this work, we study the contributions of $\rho(770,1450)\to \omega\pi$ for the cascade decays $B^{+}\to \bar{D}^{(*)0} \rho^+ \to \bar{D}^{(*)0}\omega\pi^+$, $B^{0}\to D^{(*)-} \rho^+ \to D^{(*)-}\omega\pi^+$ and $B_s^{0}\to D_s^{(*)-} \rho^+ \to D^{(*)-}\omega\pi^+$. We introduce $\rho(770,1450)\to \omega\pi$ subprocesses into the distribution amplitudes for $\omega\pi$ system via the vector form factor $F_{\omega\pi}(s)$ and then predict the branching fractions for the first time for concerned quasi-two-body decays with $\rho(770,1450)\to \omega\pi$, as well as the corresponding longitudinal polarization fractions $\Gamma_L/\Gamma$ for the cases with the vector $\bar{D}^{*0}$ or $D_{(s)}^{*-}$ in their final states. The branching fractions of these quasi-two-body decays are predicted at the order of $10^{-3}$, which can be detected at the LHCb and Belle-II experiments. The predictions for the decays ${B}^0 \to{D}^{*-} \rho(770)^+\to {D}^{*-} \omega\pi^+$ and ${B}^0 \to {D}^{*-} \rho(1450)^+\to {D}^{*-} \omega\pi^+$ agree well with the measurements from Belle Collaboration. In order to avoid the pollution from annihilation Feynman diagrams, we recommend to take the $B_s^0 \to D_s^{*-}\rho(770,1450)^+$ decays, which have only emission diagrams at quark level, to test the factorization hypothesis for $B$ decays.
