Abstract:We have calculated formation energies and position of the defect levels for all native defects and for a variety of donor and acceptor impurities employing first-principles total-energy calculations. An analysis of the numerical results gives direct insight into defect concentrations and impurity solubility with respect to growth parameters (temperature, chemical potentials) and into the mechanisms limiting the doping levels in GaN. We show how compensation and passivation by native defects or impurities, solubility issues, and incorporation of dopants on other sites influence the acceptor doping levels.

Abstract:We find the generating function of self-avoiding walks and trails on a semi-regular lattice called the $3.12^2$ lattice in terms of the generating functions of simple graphs, such as self-avoiding walks, polygons and tadpole graphs on the hexagonal lattice. Since the growth constant for these graphs is known on the hexagonal lattice we can find the growth constant for both walks and trails on the $3.12^2$ lattice. A result of Watson then allows us to find the generating function and growth constant of neighbour-avoiding walks on the covering lattice of the $3.12^2$ lattice which is tetra-valent. A mapping into walks on the covering lattice allows us to obtain improved bounds on the growth constant for a range of lattices.

Abstract:We study the winding angles of random and self-avoiding walks on square and cubic lattices with number of steps $N$ ranging up to $10^7$. We show that the mean square winding angle $\langle\theta^2\rangle$ of random walks converges to the theoretical form when $N\rightarrow\infty$. For self-avoiding walks on the square lattice, we show that the ratio $\langle\theta^4\rangle/\langle\theta^2\rangle^2$ converges slowly to the Gaussian value 3. For self avoiding walks on the cubic lattice we find that the ratio $\langle\theta^4\rangle/\langle\theta^2\rangle^2$ exhibits non-monotonic dependence on $N$ and reaches a maximum of 3.73(1) for $N\approx10^4$. We show that to a good approximation, the square winding angle of a self-avoiding walk on the cubic lattice can be obtained from the summation of the square change in the winding angles of $\ln N$ independent segments of the walk, where the $i$-th segment contains $2^i$ steps. We find that the square winding angle of the $i$-th segment increases approximately as $i^{0.5}$, which leads to an increase of the total square winding angle proportional to $(\ln N)^{1.5}$.

The critical surface fugacity of self-avoiding walks on a rotated honeycomb lattice

Abstract:In a recent paper by Beaton et al, it was proved that a model of self-avoiding walks on the honeycomb lattice, interacting with an impenetrable surface, undergoes an adsorption phase transition when the surface fugacity is $1+\sqrt{2}$. Their proof used a generalisation of an identity obtained by Duminil-Copin and Smirnov, and confirmed a conjecture of Batchelor and Yung. We consider a similar model of self-avoiding walk adsorption on the honeycomb lattice, but with the lattice rotated by $\pi/2$. For this model there also exists a conjecture for the critical surface fugacity, made in 1998 by Batchelor, Bennett-Wood and Owczarek. Using similar methods to Beaton et al, we prove that this is indeed the critical fugacity.

Abstract:A growing self-avoiding walk (GSAW) is a walk on a graph that is directed, does not visit the same vertex twice, and has a trapped endpoint. We show that the generating function enumerating GSAWs on a half-infinite strip of finite height is rational, and we give a procedure to construct a combinatorial finite state machine that allows one to compute this generating function. We then modify this procedure to compute generating functions for GSAWs under two probabilistic models. We perform Monte Carlo simulations to estimate the expected length and displacement for GSAWs on the quarter plane, half plane, full plane, and half-infinite strips of bounded height for which we cannot compute the generating function. Finally, we prove that the generating functions for Greek key tours (GSAWs on a finite grid that visit every vertex) on a half-infinite strip of fixed height are also rational, allowing us to resolve several conjectures.

Abstract:There is an extensive literature concerning self-avoiding walk on infinite graphs, but the subject is relatively undeveloped on finite graphs. The purpose of this paper is to elucidate the phase transition for self-avoiding walk on the simplest finite graph: the complete graph. We make the elementary observation that the susceptibility of the self-avoiding walk on the complete graph is given exactly in terms of the incomplete gamma function. The known asymptotic behaviour of the incomplete gamma function then yields a complete description of the finite-size scaling of the self-avoiding walk on the complete graph. As a basic example, we compute the limiting distribution of the length of a self-avoiding walk on the complete graph, in subcritical, critical, and supercritical regimes. This provides a prototype for more complex unsolved problems such as the self-avoiding walk on the hypercube or on a high-dimensional torus.

Abstract:We consider lattice self-avoiding walks and discuss the dynamic critical behavior of two dynamics that use local and bilocal moves and generalize the usual reptation dynamics. We determine the integrated and exponential autocorrelation times for several observables, perform a dynamic finite-size scaling study of the autocorrelation functions, and compute the associated dynamic critical exponents $z$. For the variables that describe the size of the walks, in the absence of interactions we find $z \approx 2.2$ in two dimensions and $z\approx 2.1$ in three dimensions. At the $\theta$-point in two dimensions we have $z\approx 2.3$.

Abstract:We describe a new algebraic technique, utilising transfer matrices, for enumerating self-avoiding lattice trails on the square lattice. We have enumerated trails to 31 steps, and find increased evidence that trails are in the self-avoiding walk universality class. Assuming that trails behave like $A \lambda ^n n^{11 \over 32}$, we find $\lambda = 2.72062 \pm 0.000006$ and $A = 1.272 \pm 0.002$.

Abstract:We prove quantitative sub-ballisticity for the self-avoiding walk on the hexagonal lattice. Namely, we show that with high probability a self-avoiding walk of length $n$ does not exit a ball of radius $O(n/\log{n})$. Previously, only a non-quantitative $o(n)$ bound was known from the work of Duminil-Copin and Hammond \cite{DCH13}. As an important ingredient of the proof we show that at criticality the partition function of bridges of height $T$ decays polynomially fast to $0$ as $T$ tends to infinity, which we believe to be of independent interest.

Abstract:Lock step walker model is a one-dimensional integer lattice walker model in discrete time. Suppose that initially there are infinitely many walkers on the non-negative even integer sites. At each tick of time, each walker moves either to its left or to its right with equal probability. The only constraint is that no two walkers can occupy the same site at the same time. It is proved that in the large time limit, a certain conditional probability of the displacement of the leftmost walker is identical to the limiting distribution of the properly scaled largest eigenvalue of a random GOE matrix (GOE Tracy-Widom distribution). The proof is based on the bijection between path configurations and semistandard Young tableaux established recently by Guttmann, Owczarek and Viennot. Statistics of semistandard Young tableaux is analyzed using the Hankel determinant expression for the probability from the work of Rains and the author. The asymptotics of the Hankel determinant is obtained by applying the Deift-Zhou steepest-descent method to the Riemann-Hilbert problem for the related orthogonal polynomials.

Abstract:We have analyzed geometric and topological features of self-avoiding walks. We introduce a new kind of walk: the loop-deleted self-avoiding walk (LDSAW) motivated by the interaction of chromatin with the nuclear lamina. Its critical exponent is calculated and found to be different from that of the ordinary SAW. Taking the walks as point-clouds, the LDSAW is a subset of the SAW. We study the difference between the LDSAW and SAW by comparing their fractal dimensions and growth rates of the Betti number. In addition, the spatial distribution of the contacts inside a SAW, which is also a subset of SAW, is analyzed following the same routine. The results show that the contact-cloud has a multi-fractal property and different growth rates for the Betti number. Finally, for comparison, we have analyzed random subsets of the SAW, showing them to have the same fractal dimension as the SAW.

Abstract:We study percolation on the sites of a finite lattice visited by a generalized random walk of finite length with periodic boundary conditions. More precisely, consider Levy flights and walks with finite jumps of length $>1$ (like knight's move random walks (RW) in 2 dimensions and generalized knight's move RW in 3d). In these walks, the visited sites do not form (as in ordinary RW) a single connected cluster, and thus percolation on them is non-trivial. The model essentially mimics the spreading of an epidemic in a population weakened by the passage of some devastating agent -- like diseases in the wake of a passing army or of a hurricane. Using the density of visited sites (or the number of steps in the walk) as a control parameter, we find a true continuous percolation transition in all cases except for the 2-d knight's move RW and Levy flights with Levy parameter $\sigma \geq 2$. For 3-d generalized knight's move RW, the model is in the universality class of Pacman percolation, and all critical exponents seem to be simple rationals, in particular $\beta=1$. For 2-d Levy flights with $0 <\sigma < 2$, scale invariance is broken even at the critical point, which leads at least to very large corrections in finite size scaling, and even very large simulations were unable to determine unambiguously the critical exponents.

Abstract:This article proposes a new way of deriving mean-field exponents for the weakly self-avoiding walk model in dimensions $d>4$. Among other results, we obtain up-to-constant estimates for the full-space and half-space two-point functions in the critical and near-critical regimes. A companion paper proposes a similar analysis for spread-out Bernoulli percolation in dimensions $d>6$.

Abstract:We continue the enumeration of plane lattice walks with small steps avoiding the negative quadrant, initiated by the first author in 2016. We solve in detail a new case, namely the king model where all eight nearest neighbour steps are allowed. The associated generating function is proved to be the sum of a simple, explicit D-finite series (related to the number of walks confined to the first quadrant), and an algebraic one. This was already the case for the two models solved by the first author in 2016. The principle of the approach is also the same, but challenging theoretical and computational difficulties arise as we now handle algebraic series of larger degree. We expect a similar algebraicity phenomenon to hold for the seven Weyl step sets, which are those for which walks confined to the first quadrant can be counted using the reflection principle. With this paper, this is now proved for three of them. For the remaining four, we predict the D-finite part of the solution, and in three of the four cases, give evidence for the algebraicity of the remaining part.

Abstract:We prove that for the d ‐regular tessellations of the hyperbolic plane by k ‐gons, there are exponentially more self‐avoiding walks of length n than there are self‐avoiding polygons of length n . We then prove that this property implies that the self‐avoiding walk is ballistic, even on an arbitrary vertex‐transitive graph. Moreover, for every fixed k , we show that the connective constant for self‐avoiding walks satisfies the asymptotic expansion d − 1 − O ( 1 ∕ d ) as d → ∞ ; on the other hand, the connective constant for self‐avoiding polygons remains bounded. Finally, we show for all but two tessellations that the number of self‐avoiding walks of length n is comparable to the n th power of their connective constant. Some of these results were previously obtained by Madras and Wu for all but finitely many regular tessellations of the hyperbolic plane.

Abstract:We compute the exact root-mean-square end-to-end distance of the interacting self-avoiding walk (ISAW) up to 27 steps on the simple cubic lattice. These data are used to construct a fixed point equation to estimate the theta temperature of the collapse transition of the ISAW. With the Bulirsch–Stoer extrapolation method, we obtain accurate results that can be compared with large-scale long-chain simulations. The free parameter ω in extrapolation is precisely determined using a parity property of the ISAW. The systematic improvement of this approach is feasible by adopting the combination of exact enumeration and multicanonical simulations.

Abstract:We prove a sufficient condition for the two-point function of a statistical mechanical model on $\mathbb{Z}^d$, $d > 2$, to be bounded uniformly near a critical point by $|x|^{-(d-2)} \exp [ -c|x| / \xi ]$, where $\xi$ is the correlation length. The condition is given in terms of a convolution equation satisfied by the two-point function, and we verify the condition for strictly self-avoiding walk in dimensions $d > 4$ using the lace expansion. As an example application, we use the uniform bound to study the self-avoiding walk on a $d$-dimensional discrete torus with $d > 4$, proving a ``plateau'' of the torus two-point function, a result previously obtained for weakly self-avoiding walk in dimensions $d > 4$ by Slade. Our method has the potential to be applied to other statistical mechanical models on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ or on the torus.

Abstract:Lattice walks are used to model various physical phenomena. In particular, walks within Weyl chambers connect directly to representation theory via the Littelmann path model. We derive asymptotics for centrally weighted lattice walks within the Weyl chamber corresponding to $A_2$ by using tools from analytic combinatorics in several variables (ACSV). We find universality classes depending on the weights of the walks, in line with prior results on the weighted Gouyou-Beauchamps model. Along the way, we identify a type of singularity within a multivariate rational generating function that is not yet covered by the theory of ACSV. We conjecture asymptotics for this type of singularity.
