Abstract:Spin-glass and chiral-glass orderings of a three-dimensional isotropic Heisenberg spin glass are studied both by equilibrium and off-equilibrium Monte Carlo simulations with emphasis on their dynamical aspects. The model is found to exhibit a finite-temperature chiral-glass transition without the conventional spin-glass order. Although chirality is an Ising-like quantity from symmetry, universality class of the chiral-glass transition appears to be different from that of the standard Ising spin glass. In the off-equilibrium simulation, while the spin autocorrelation exhibits only an interrupted aging, the chirality autocorrelation persists to exhibit a pronounced aging effect reminiscent of the one observered in the mean-field model.

Abstract:Large-scale simulations have been performed in the current-driven three-dimensional XY spin glass with resistively shunted-junction dynamics for sample sizes up to 64(3). It is observed that the linear resistivity at low temperatures tends to zero, providing a strong evidence of a finite-temperature phase-coherence (i.e., spin-glass) transition. Dynamical scaling analysis demonstrates that a perfect collapse of current-voltage data can be achieved. The obtained critical exponents agree with those in equilibrium Monte Carlo simulations, and are compatible with those observed in various experiments on high-T-c cuprate superconductors. It is suggested that the spin and the chirality order simultaneously. A genuine continuous depinning transition is found at zero temperature. For low temperature creep motion, critical exponents are evaluated, and a non-Arrhenius creep motion is observed in the low temperature ordered phase. It is proposed that the XY spin glass gives an effective description of the transport properties in high-T-c superconductors with d-wave symmetry.

Abstract:Extensive equilibrium Monte Carlo simulations are performed for a three-dimensional Heisenberg spin glass with the nearest-neighbor Gaussian coupling to investigate its spin-glass and chiral-glass orderings. The occurrence of a finite-temperature chiral-glass transition without the conventional spin-glass order is established. Critical exponents characterizing the transition are different from those of the standard Ising spin glass. The calculated overlap distribution suggests the appearance of a peculiar type of replica-symmetry breaking in the chiral-glass ordered state.

It is found that the chiral-glass transition and the chiral-glass ordered state, which are essentially of the same character as their zero-field counterparts, occur under magnetic fields. The chiral-glass ordered state exhibits a one-step-like peculiar replica-symmetry breaking in the chiral sector, while it does not accompany the spin-glass order perpendicular to the applied field. Critical perperties of the chiral-glass transition are different from those of the standard Ising spin glass. Magnetic phase diagram of the model is constructed, which reveals that the chiral-glass state is quite robust against magnetic fields. The chiral-glass transition line has a character of the Gabay-Toulouse line of the mean-field model, yet its physical origin being entirely different. These numerical results are discussed in light of the recently developed spin-chirality decoupling-recoupling scenario. Implication to experimental phase diagram is also discussed.

Abstract:The nature of the ordering of the three-dimensional isotropic Heisenberg spin glass with nearest-neighbor random Gaussian coupling is studied by extensive Monte Carlo simulations. Several independent physical quantities are measured both for the spin and for the chirality, including the correlation-length ratio, the Binder ratio, the glass order parameter, the overlap distribution function and the non-self-averageness parameter. By controlling the effect of the correction-to-scaling, we have obtained a numerical evidence for the occurrence of successive chiral-glass and spin-glass transitions at nonzero temperatures, T_{CG} > T_{SG} > 0. Hence, the spin and the chirality are decoupled in the ordering of the model. The chiral-glass exponents are estimated to be \nu_{CG}=1.4+-0.2 and \eta_{CG}=0.6+-0.2, indicating that the chiral-glass transition lies in a universality class different from that of the Ising spin glass. The possibility that the spin and chiral sectors undergo a simultaneous Kosterlitz-Thouless-type transition is ruled out. The chiral-glass state turns out to be non-self-averaging, possibly accompanying a one-step-like peculiar replica-symmetry breaking. Implications to the chirality scenario of experimental spin-glass transitions are discussed.

Abstract:The ordering of the three-dimensional Heisenberg spin glass with the weak random anisotropy in magnetic fields is studied by extensive equilibrium Monte Carlo simulations. Both the spin and the chirality are monitored. We find strong numerical evidence that a replica symmetry breaking transition occurs in the chiral sector, which accompanies the simultaneous spin-glass order. Despite the similarity in the global symmetry, the ordering behavior of the weakly anisotropic Heisenberg spin glass differs significantly from that of the strongly anisotropic Ising spin glass. The obtained phase diagram in the temperature - magnetic field plane is similar to the experimental phase diagram. Our results highlight the importance of the chirality in the spin-glass ordering of the Heisenberg-like spin glass, and support the spin-chirality decoupling-recoupling scenario of spin-glass transitions.

Formation of omega Centauri from an ancient nucleated dwarf galaxy in the young Galactic disc

Abstract:We first present a self-consistent dynamical model in which $\omega$ Cen is formed from an ancient nucleated dwarf galaxy merging with the first generation of the Galactic thin disc in a retrograde manner with respect to the Galactic rotation. Our numerical simulations demonstrate that during merging between the Galaxy and the $\omega$ Cen's host dwarf with $M_{\rm B}$ $\simeq$ -14 mag and its nucleus mass of $10^7$ $M_{\odot}$, the outer stellar envelope of the dwarf is nearly completely stripped whereas the central nucleus can survive from the tidal stripping because of its compactness. The developed naked nucleus has a very bound retrograde orbit around the young Galactic disc, as observed for $\omega$ Cen, with its apocenter and pericenter distances of $\sim$ 8 kpc and $\sim$ 1 kpc, respectively. The Galactic tidal force can induce radial inflow of gas to the dwarf's center and consequently triggers moderately strong nuclear starbursts in a repetitive manner. This result implies that efficient nuclear chemical enrichment resulting from the later starbursts can be closely associated with the origin of the observed relatively young and metal-rich stars in $\omega$ Cen. Dynamical heating by the $\omega$ Cen's host can transform the young thin disc into the thick disc during merging.

Abstract:An overview is given of experimental data on Heisenberg spin glass materials so as to make detailed comparisons with numerical results on model Heisenberg spin glasses, with particular reference to the chiral driven ordering transition scenario due to Kawamura and collaborators. On weak anisotropy systems, experiments show critical exponents which are very similar to those estimated numerically for the model Heisenberg chiral ordering transition but which are quite different from those at Ising spin glass transitions. Again on weak anisotropy Heisenberg spin glasses, experimental torque data show well defined in-field transverse ordering transitions up to strong applied fields, in contrast to Ising spin glasses where fields destroy ordering. When samples with stronger anisotropies are studied, critical and in-field behavior tend progressively towards the Ising limit. It can be concluded that the essential physics of laboratory Heisenberg spin glasses mirrors that of model Heisenberg spin glasses, where chiral ordering has been demonstrated numerically.

Abstract:The ordering of the one-dimensional Heisenberg spin glass interacting via the long-range power-law interaction is studied by Monte Carlo simulations. Particular attention is paid to the possible occurrence of the ``spin-chirality decoupling'' for appropriate values of the power-law exponent \sigma. Our result suggests that, for intermediate values of $\sigma$, the chiral-glass order occurs at finite temperatures while the standard spin-glass order occurs only at zero temperature.

Abstract:Ordering of the Heisenberg spin glass with the nearest-neighbor Gaussian coupling is investigated by equilibrium Monte Carlo simulations in four and five dimensions. Ordering of the mean-field Heisenberg spin-glass is also studied for comparison. Particular attention is paid to the nature of the spin-glass and the chiral-glass orderings. Our numerical data suggest that, in five dimensions, the model exhibits a single spin-glass transition at a finite temperature, where the spin-glass order accompanying the simultaneous chiral-glass order sets in. In four dimensions, by contrast, the model exhibits a chiral-glass transition at a finite temperature, not accompanying the standard spin-glass order. The critical region associated with the chiral-glass transition, however, is very narrow, suggesting that dimension four is close to the marginal dimensionality.

Abstract:Recently, numerical simulations reveal that a spin-glass transition can occur in the three-dimensional diluted dipolar system. By defining the chirality of triple spins in a diluted dipolar Heisenberg spin glass, we study the chiral ordering in the system using parallel tempering algorithm and heat bath method. The finite-size scaling analysis reveals that the system undergoes a chiral-glass transition at finite temperature.

Abstract:It is shown, by means of Monte Carlo simulation and Finite Size Scaling analysis, that the Heisenberg spin glass undergoes a finite-temperature phase transition in three dimensions. There is a single critical temperature, at which both a spin glass and a chiral glass orderings develop. The Monte Carlo algorithm, adapted from lattice gauge theory simulations, makes possible to thermalize lattices of size L=32, larger than in any previous spin glass simulation in three dimensions. High accuracy is reached thanks to the use of the Marenostrum supercomputer. The large range of system sizes studied allow us to consider scaling corrections.

Abstract:The three-dimensional $\pm J$ Heisenberg spin-glass model is investigated by the non-equilibrium relaxation method from the paramagnetic state. Finite-size effects in the non-equilibrium relaxation are analyzed, and the relaxation functions of the spin-glass susceptibility and the chiral-glass susceptibility in the infinite-size system are obtained. The finite-time scaling analysis gives the spin-glass transition at $T_{\rm sg}/J=0.21_{-0.02}^{+0.01}$ and the chiral-glass transition at $T_{\rm cg}/J=0.22_{-0.03}^{+0.01}$. The results suggest that both transitions occur simultaneously. The critical exponent of the spin-glass susceptibility is estimated as $\gamma_{\rm sg}= 1.7 \pm 0.3$, which makes an agreement with the experiments of the insulating and the canonical spin-glass materials.

Abstract:Up to now the chirality is seldom studied in the diluted spin glass although many investigations have been performed on the site-ordered Edwards–Anderson model. By simulation, we investigate the dynamical properties of both the spin-glass and the chiral-glass phases in a diluted dipolar system, which was manifested to have a spin-glass transition by recent numerical study. By scaling we find that both phases have the same aging behavior and closer aging parameter μ. Similarly, the domains grow in the same way and both phases have a closer barrier exponent Ψ. It means that both the spins and the chirality have the same dynamical properties and they may freeze at the same temperature.
