Abstract:We solve the Klein-Gordon equation for a scalar field, in the background geometry of a dust cloud collapsing to form a black hole, everywhere in the (1+1) spacetime: that is, both inside and outside the event horizon and arbitrarily close to the curvature singularity. This allows us to determine the regularized stress tensor expectation value, everywhere in the appropriate quantum state (viz., the Unruh vacuum) of the field. We use this to study the behaviour of energy density and the flux measured in local inertial frames for the radially freely falling observer at any given event. Outside the black hole, energy density and flux lead to the standard results expected from the Hawking radiation emanating from the black hole, as the collapse proceeds. Inside the collapsing dust ball, the energy densities of both matter and scalar field diverge near the singularity in both (1+1) and (1+3) spacetime dimensions; but the energy density of the field dominates over that of classical matter. In the (1+3) dimensions, the total energy (of both scalar field and classical matter) inside a small spatial volume around the singularity is finite (and goes to zero as the size of the region goes to zero) but the total energy of the quantum field still dominates over that of the classical matter. Inside the event horizon, but \textit{outside} the collapsing matter, freely falling observers find that the energy density and the flux diverge close to the singularity. In this region, even the integrated energy inside a small spatial volume enclosing the singularity diverges. This result holds in both (1+1) and (1+3) spacetime dimensions with a \emph{milder} divergence for the total energy inside a small region in (1+3) dimensions. These results suggest that the back-reaction effects are significant even in the region \emph{outside the matter but inside the event horizon}, close to the singularity.

Abstract:The general exact solution describing the dynamics of anisotropic elastic spheres supported only by tangential stresses is reduced to a quadrature using Ori's mass-area coordinates. This leads to the explicit construction of the root equation governing the nature of the central singularity. Using this equation, we formulate and motivate on physical grounds a conjecture on the nature of this singularity. The conjecture covers a large sector of the space of initial data; roughly speaking, it asserts that addition of a tangential stress cannot undress a covered dust singularity. The root equation also allows us to analyze the case of self-similar spacetimes and to get some insight on the role of stresses in deciding the nature of the singularities in this case.

Abstract:In this paper we will examine the consequence of a canonical theory of quantum dust collapse in 2+1 dimensions. The solution of the WDW equation describing the collapse indicates that collapsing shells outside the apparent horizon are accompanied by outgoing shells within the apparent horizon during their collapse phase and stop collapsing once they reach the apparent horizon. Taking this picture of quantum collapse seriously, we determine a static solution with energy density corresponding to a dust ball whose collapse has terminated at the apparent horizon. We show that the boundary radius of the ball is larger than the BTZ radius confirming that no event horizon is formed. The ball is sustained by radial pressure which we determine and which we attribute to the Unruh radiation within it.

Abstract:We provide a covariant framework to study singularity-free Lemaître-Tolman-Bondi spacetimes with effective corrections motivated by loop quantum gravity. We show that, as in general relativity, physically reasonable energy distributions lead to a contraction of the dust shells. However, quantum-gravity effects eventually stop the collapse, the dust smoothly bounces back, and no gravitational singularity is generated. This model is constructed by deforming the Hamiltonian constraint of general relativity with the condition that the hypersurface deformation algebra is closed. In addition, under the gauge transformations generated by the deformed constraints, the structure function of the algebra changes adequately, so that it can be interpreted as the inverse spatial metric. Therefore, the model is completely covariant in the sense that gauge transformations in phase space simply correspond to coordinate changes in spacetime. However, in the construction of the metric, we point out a specific freedom of considering a conformal factor, which we use to obtain a family of singularity-free spacetimes associated with the modified model. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevD.109.064023 © 2024 American Physical Society

Abstract:LeMa\^ıtre-Tolman-Bondi models of spherical dust collapse have been used and continue to be used extensively to study various stellar collapse scenarios. It is by now well-known that these models lead to the formation of black holes and naked singularities from regular initial data. The final outcome of the collapse, particularly in the event of naked singularity formation, depends very heavily on quantum effects during the final stages. These quantum effects cannot generally be treated semi-classically as quantum fluctuations of the gravitational field are expected to dominate before the final state is reached. We present a canonical reduction of LeMa\^ıtre-Tolman-Bondi space-times describing the marginally bound collapse of inhomogeneous dust, in which the physical radius, $R$, the proper time of the collapsing dust, $\tau$, and the mass function, $F$, are the canonical coordinates, $R(r)$, $\tau(r)$ and $F(r)$ on the phase space. Dirac's constraint quantization leads to a simple functional (Wheeler-DeWitt) equation. The equation is solved and the solution can be employed to study some of the effects of quantum gravity during gravitational collapse with different initial conditions.

A Proof of Weak Cosmic Censorship Conjecture for the Spherically Symmetric Einstein-Maxwell-Charged Scalar Field System

Abstract:Under spherical symmetry, we show that the weak cosmic censorship holds for the gravitational collapse of the Einstein-Maxwell-charged scalar field system. Namely, for this system, with generic initial data, the formed spacetime singularities are concealed inside black-hole regions. This generalizes Christodoulou's celebrated results to the charged case. Due to the presence of charge $Q$ and the complexification of the scalar field $\phi$, multiple delicate features and miraculous monotonic properties of the Einstein-(real) scalar field system are not present. We develop a systematical approach to incorporate $Q$ and the complex-valued $\phi$ into the integrated arguments. For instance, we discover a new path, employing the reduced mass ratio, to establish the sharp trapped surface formation criterion for the charged case. Due to the complex structure and the absence of translational symmetry of $\phi$, we also carry out detailed modified scale-critical BV area estimates with renormalized quantities to deal with $Q$ and $\phi$. We present a new $C^1$ extension criterion by utilizing the Doppler exponent to elucidate the blueshift effect, analogous to the role of integrating vorticity in the Beale-Kato-Madja breakdown criterion for incompressible fluids. Furthermore, by utilizing only double-null foliations, we establish the desired first and second instability theorems for the charged scenarios and identify generic initial conditions for the non-appearance of naked singularities. Our instability argument requires intricate generalizations of the treatment for the uncharged case via analyzing the precise contribution of the charged terms and its connection to the reduced mass ratio.

Gravitational Collapse in Energy-momentum squared gravity: Nature of singularities

Abstract:In this paper, we explore a collapsing scenario in the background of energy-momentum squared gravity (EMSG). EMSG claims to have terms that originate from the quantum gravity effects mimicking loop quantum gravity. As a result, the framework admits a bounce at a finite time thus avoiding a singularity. So the question that naturally arises: Is there any realistic chance of the formation of a black hole or the quantum gravity effects are strong enough to totally avoid such a pathology? Motivated by this we are interested in studying a gravitational collapse mechanism in the background of EMSG and investigate the fate of such a process. We model the spacetime of a massive star by the Vaidya metric and derive the field equations in EMSG. Then using the equations we go on to study a gravitational collapse mechanism, on two specific models of EMSG with different forms of curvature-matter coupling. The prime objective is to probe the nature of singularity (if formed) as the end state of the collapse. We see that none of the models generically admit the formation of black holes as the end state of collapse, but on the contrary, they support the formation of naked singularities. This can be attributed to the quantum fluctuations of the gravitational interactions at the fundamental level.

Abstract:Spherical vacuum and scalar collapse for the Starobinsky R^2 model is simulated. Obtained by considering the quantum-gravitational effects, this model would admit some cases of singularity-free cosmological spacetimes. It is found, however, that in vacuum and scalar collapse, when f' or the physical scalar field is strong enough, a black hole including a central singularity can be formed. In addition, near the central singularity, gravity dominates the repulsion from the potential, so that in some circumstances the Ricci scalar is pushed to infinity by gravity. Therefore, the semiclassical effects as included here do not avoid the singularity problem in general relativity. A strong physical scalar field can prevent the Ricci scalar from growing to infinity. Vacuum collapse for the RlnR model is explored, and it is observed that for this model the Ricci scalar can also go to infinity as the central singularity is approached. Therefore, this feature seems universal in vacuum and scalar collapse in f(R) gravity.

Abstract:We present a new formalism for numerically treating the semiclassical gravitational collapse of a scalar quantum field in the radially symmetric case. Our formalism is time reversal invariant and the evolution of the scalar fields is unitary. We present some first results in the angular momentum $l=0$ approximation for an initially coherent state of a massless field and briefly discuss future prospects.

Abstract:A high intake of whole grain foods is associated with reduced risk of colon cancer, but the mechanism underlying this protection has yet to be elucidated. Chronic inflammation and associated cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) expression in the colon epithelium are causally related to epithelial carcinogenesis, proliferation, and tumor growth. We examined the effect of avenanthramides (Avns), unique polyphenols from oats with anti-inflammatory properties, on COX-2 expression in macrophages, colon cancer cell lines, and on proliferation of human colon cancer cell lines. We found that Avns-enriched extract of oats (AvExO) had no effect on COX-2 expression, but it did inhibit COX enzyme activity and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) production in lipopolysaccharide-stimulated mouse peritoneal macrophages. Avns (AvExO, Avn-C, and the methylated form of Avn-C (CH3-Avn-C)) significantly inhibited cell proliferation of both COX-2-positive HT29, Caco-2, and LS174T, and COX-2-negative HCT116 human colon cancer cell lines, CH3-Avn-C being the most potent. However, Avns had no effect on COX-2 expression and PGE2 production in Caco-2 and HT29 colon cancer cells. These results indicate that the inhibitory effect of Avns on colon cancer cell proliferation may be independent of COX-2 expression and PGE2 production. Thus, Avns might reduce colon cancer risk through inhibition of macrophage PGE2 production and non-COX-related antiproliferative effects in colon cancer cells. Interestingly, Avns had no effect on cell viability of confluence-induced differentiated Caco-2 cells, which display the characteristics of normal colonic epithelial cells. Our results suggest that the consumption of oats and oat bran may reduce the risk of colon cancer not only because of their high fiber content but also due to Avns, which attenuate proliferation of colonic cancer cells.

Abstract:We consider general relativistic homogeneous gravitational collapses for dust and radiation. We show that replacing the density profile with an effective density justified by some quantum gravity framework leads to the avoidance of the final singularity. The effective density acts on the collapsing cloud by introducing an isotropic pressure, which is negligible at the beginning of the collapse and becomes negative and dominant in the strong-field regime. Event horizons never form and therefore the outcome of the collapse is not a black hole, in the sense that there are no regions causally disconnected from future null infinity. Apparent horizons form when the mass of the object exceeds a critical value, disappear when the matter density approaches an upper bound and gravity becomes very weak (asymptotic-freedom regime), form again after the bounce as a consequence of the decrease in the matter density, and eventually disappear when the density becomes too low and the matter is radiated away. The possibility of detecting radiation coming from the high-density region of a collapsing astrophysical object in which classically there would be the creation of a singularity could open a new window to experimentally test theories of quantum gravity.
Quantum Effects of the Conformal Anomaly in a 2D Model of Gravitational Collapse

Abstract:The macroscopic effects of the quantum conformal anomaly are evaluated in a simplified two-dimensional model of gravitational collapse. The effective action and stress tensor of the anomaly can be expressed in a local quadratic form by the introduction of a scalar conformalon field which satisfies a linear wave equation. A wide class of non-vacuum initial state conditions is generated by different solutions of this equation. An interesting subclass of solutions corresponds to initial states that give rise to an arbitrarily large semi-classical stress tensor on the future horizon of the black hole formed in classical collapse. These lead to modification and suppression of Hawking radiation at late times after the collapse, and potentially large backreaction effects on the horizon scale due to the conformal anomaly. The probability of non-vacuum initial conditions large enough to produce these effects is estimated from the Gaussian vacuum wave functional in the Schrodinger representation and shown to be of order 1. These results indicate that quantum effects of the conformal anomaly in non-vacuum states are relevant for gravitational collapse in the effective theory of gravity in four dimensions as well.

Infinite quantum twisting at the Cauchy horizon of rotating black holes

Abstract:We present a numerical calculation of the expectation value of the quantum angular-momentum current flux density for a scalar field in the Unruh state near the inner horizon of a Kerr-de Sitter black hole. Our results indicate that this flux diverges as $V_-^{-1}$ in a suitable Kruskal coordinate such that $V_-=0$ at the inner horizon. Depending on the parameter values of the scalar field and black hole that we consider, and depending on the polar angle (latitude), this flux can have different signs. In the near extremal cases considered, the angle average of the expectation value of the quantum angular momentum current flux is of the opposite sign as the angular momentum of the background itself, suggesting that, in the cases considered, quantum effects tend to decrease the total angular momentum of the spheres away from the extremal value. We also numerically calculate the energy flux component, which provides the leading order divergence of the quantum stress energy tensor, dominant over the classical stress energy tensor, at the inner horizon. Taking our expectation value of the quantum stress tensor as the source in the semiclassical Einstein equation, our analysis suggests that the spheres approaching the inner horizon can undergo an infinite twisting due to quantum effects along latitudes separating regions of infinite expansion and contraction.

Quantum Matter near a Cosmological Singularity

Abstract:General Relativity predicts that the spacetime near a cosmological singularity undergoes an infinite number of chaotic oscillations between different Kasner epochs with rapid transitions between them. This so-called BKL behaviour persists in the presence of several types of classical matter. Little is known in the presence of quantum effects. A major obstacle is the fact that the fast metric oscillations inevitably drive the matter far from equilibrium. We use holography to determine the evolution of the quantum stress tensor of a non-conformal, strongly-coupled, four-dimensional gauge theory in a Kasner spacetime. The stress tensor near the singularity is solely controlled by the ultraviolet fixed point of the gauge theory, and it diverges in a universal way common to all theories with a gravity dual. We then compute the backreaction of the stress tensor on the Kasner metric to leading order in the gravitational coupling. The modification of the Kasner exponents that we find suggests that the BKL behaviour may be avoided in the presence of quantum matter.

The Structure of Singularity in Gravitational Collapse

Abstract:We will describe here the structure of singularity forming in gravitational collapse of spherically symmetric inhomogeneous dust. Such a collapse is described by the Tolman-Bondi-Lema{î}tre metric. The main new result here relates, in a general way, the formation of black holes and naked shell-focusing singularities resulting as the final fate of such a collapse to the generic form of regular initial data. Such a data is characterized in terms of the density and velocity profiles of the matter, specified on an initial time slice from which the collapse commences. We show that given any generic density profile at the initial time slice, there exists a corresponding velocity profile which gives rise to a strong curvature naked singularity. This establishes that strong naked singularities arise for a generic density profile. We also establish here that similar results hold for black hole formation as well. Keeping the model to be spherically symmetric we also consider more general form of matter fields, i.e. equation of state $p = k\rho$. We will analyse here the nature of non-central singularity forming due to collapse of spherically symmetric perfect fluid subject to weak energy condition.

Abstract:In a previous paper, some of us studied general relativistic homogeneous gravitational collapses for dust and radiation, in which the density profile was replaced by an effective density justified by some quantum gravity models. It was found that the effective density introduces an effective pressure that becomes negative and dominant in the strong-field regime. With this set-up, the central singularity is replaced by a bounce, after which the cloud starts expanding. Motivated by the fact that in the classical case homogeneous and inhomogeneous collapse models have different properties, here we extend our previous work to the inhomogeneous case. As in the quantum-inspired homogeneous collapse model, the classical central singularity is replaced by a bounce, but the inhomogeneities strongly affect the structure of the bounce curve and of the trapped region.

Abstract:Abstract The critical collapse of a scalar field is a threshold solution of black hole formation, in which a naked singularity arises. We study here the curvature strength of this singularity using a numerical ansatz. The behavior of the Jacobi volume forms is examined along a non-spacelike geodesic in the limit of approach to the singularity. These are seen to be vanishing, thus showing that all physical objects will be crushed to zero size near the singularity. Consequently, although the critical collapse is considered to be a fine-tuning problem, the naked singularity forming is gravitationally strong. This implies that the spacetime cannot be extended beyond the singularity, thus making the singularity genuine and physically interesting. These results imply that the nature of critical collapse may need to be examined and explored further.
