Abstract:Both hot QCD matter and extremely strong electromagnetic fields are generated in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. We employ the transport model and the equivalent photon approximation (EPA) to study charmonium hadroproduction and photoproduction in nucleus-nucleus collisions, respectively. In photoproduction, quasi-real photons may interact with the whole nucleus or individual nucleons, which is called the coherent and incoherent processes, respectively. The typical momentum of charmonium produced in two processes is located in $p_T\lesssim 1/R_A$ and $p_T\lesssim 1/R_N$, where $R_A$ and $R_N$ are the radii of nucleus and the nucleon. Both kinds of photoproduction and also hadroproduction are considered to calculate charmonium production in different transverse momentum bins, rapidity bins, and collision centralities, incorporating modifications from hot QCD matter and initial cold nuclear matter effects. Our calculations explain experimental data about charmonium nuclear modification factors and the production cross-section in ultra-peripheral collisions. Charmonium nuclear modification is far above the unit at extremely low $p_T$ ($p_T < 0.1$ GeV/c) in peripheral collisions with centrality 70-90\%, attributed to coherent photoproduction.

Abstract:We review the present status in the theoretical and phenomenological understanding of charmonium and bottomonium production in heavy-ion collisions. We start by recapitulating the basic notion of "anomalous quarkonium suppression" in heavy-ion collisions and its recent amendments involving regeneration reactions. We then survey in some detail concepts and ingredients needed for a comprehensive approach to utilize heavy quarkonia as a probe of hot and dense matter. The theoretical discussion encompasses recent lattice QCD computations of quarkonium properties in the Quark-Gluon Plasma, their interpretations using effective potential models, inelastic rate calculations and insights from analyses of electromagnetic plasmas. We illustrate the powerful techniques of thermodynamic Green functions (T-matrices) to provide a general framework for implementing microscopic properties of heavy quarkonia into a kinetic theory of suppression and regeneration reactions. The theoretical concepts are tested in applications to heavy-ion reactions at SPS, RHIC and LHC. We outline perspectives for future experiments on charmonium and bottomonium production in heavy-ion collisions over a large range in energy (FAIR, RHIC-II and LHC). These are expected to provide key insights into hadronic matter under extreme conditions using quarkonium observables.

Theory for Quarkonium: from NRQCD Factorization to Soft Gluon Factorization

Abstract:We demonstrate that the recently proposed soft gluon factorization (SGF) is equivalent to the nonrelativistic QCD (NRQCD) factorization for heavy quarkonium production or decay, which means that, for any given process, these two factorization theories are either both valid or both violated. We use two methods to arrive at this conclusion. In the first method, we apply the two factorization theories to the physical process J/psi -> e(+)e(-). Our explicit calculation shows that both SGF and NRQCD can correctly reproduce the low energy physics of full QCD, and the two factorizations are thus equivalent. In the second method, by using equations of motion, we successfully deduce SGF from NRQCD effective field theory. By identifying SGF with NRQCD factorization, we establish relations between the two factorization theories and prove the generalized Gremm-Kapustin relation as a byproduct. Compared with the NRQCD factorization, the advantage of SGF is that it resums the series of relativistic corrections originating from kinematic effects to all powers, yielding better convergence of the relativistic expansion.

Abstract:This report is devoted to the analytical calculation of heavy quarkonia production processes in modern experiments such as LHC, B-factories and superB-factories in computer. Theoretical description of heavy quarkonia is based on the factorization theorem. This theorem leads to special structure of the production amplitudes which can be used to develop computer algorithm which calculates these amplitudes automatically. This report is devoted to the description of this algorithm. As an example of its application we present the results of the calculation of double charmonia production in bottomonia decays and inclusive the $\chi_{cJ}$ mesons production in pp-collisions.

QCD factorization beyond leading twist in exclusive processes: rhoT-meson production

Abstract:Exclusive processes in hard electroproduction is one of the best place for understanding the factorization properties of QCD. The HERA experiment recently provided precise data for rho electroproduction, including all spin density matrix elements. From QCD, it is expected that such a process should factorize between a hard (calculable) coefficient function, and hadronic (p and rho) matrix elements. Such a factorization is up to now only proven for a longitudinaly polarized rho. Within the kt-factorization approach (valid at large s_{gamma* p}), we evaluate the impact factor of the transition gamma* -> rhoT taking into account the twist 3 contributions. We show that a gauge invariant expression is obtained with the help of QCD equations of motion. More generally, relying on these equations and on the invariance under rotation on the light-cone of the factorized amplitude, the non-perturbative Distribution Amplitudes can be reduced to a minimal set. This opens the way to a consistent treatment of factorization for exclusive processes with a transversally polarized vector meson. We prove the equivalence of two proposed parametrizations of the rhoT distribution amplitudes.

Charmonium Photoproduction in Semi-central Nuclear Collisions at the Large Hadron Collider

Abstract:The charmonium photoproduction in high energy nuclear collisions is important not only in ultra peripheral events where there is no hadroproduction but also in semi-central events where the hot medium is created. Unlike the hadroproduction which is significantly suppressed by the hot medium, the coherent $gamma Ato Psi A$ process happens on the surfaces of the colliding nuclei and is only weakly affected by the fireball. We calculate the yield ratio of $psiu0027$ to $J/psi$ in the frame of a transport approach and find that its low transverse momentum behavior is still controlled by the photoproduction in semi-central nuclear collisions at the LHC energy.

Abstract:Inclusive $P$-wave charmonia production in hadronic collisions at high energies is discussed in the framework of non-relativistic QCD and $k_T$-factorization formalism. We present two consistent approches to merge the usual leading order $k_T$-factorization calculations with tree-level next-to-leading order off-shell amplitudes. Using these prescriptions, we extracted long-distance matrix elements for $\chi_c$ mesons from a combined fit to available Tevatron and LHC data. In contrast to previous (leading order) calculations, our fits do not contradict equal color singlet wave functions of $\chi_{c1}$ and $\chi_{c2}$ states. The extracted values of long-distance matrix elements are employed to analyse the $\chi_c$ polarization data reported recently by the CMS Collaboration. Our predictions are in a reasonably good agreement with the Tevatron and LHC measurements within the theoretical and experimental uncertainties.

Charmonium production in high multiplicity p p collisions and the structure of the proton

Abstract:In this work we study charmonium production in high multiplicity proton-proton collisions. We investigate the role of the spatial distribution of partons in the protons and assume that the proton has a Y shape. In this configuration quarks are more at the surface and gluons in the inner part of the proton. Going from peripheral to more central and then to ultra-central proton-proton collisions, we go from quark-quark collisions to gluon-gluon collisions. Since gluons are much more abundant, the cross sections grow. In the case of charm production this growth is enhanced by the fact that, $\sigma( g + g \to c + \bar{c}) >> \sigma( q + \bar{q} \to c + \bar{c})$. These effects can explain the growth seen in the data.

Abstract:We present a fully differential next-to-next-to-leading order calculation of charm-quark production in charged-current deep-inelastic scattering, with full charm-quark mass dependence. The next-to-next-to-leading order corrections in perturbative quantum chromodynamics are found to be comparable in size to the next-to-leading order corrections in certain kinematic regions. We compare our predictions with data on dimuon production in (anti)neutrino scattering from a heavy nucleus. Our results can be used to improve the extraction of the parton distribution function of a strange quark in the nucleon.

Abstract:We study the effect of thermal charm production on charmonium regeneration in high energy nuclear collisions. By solving the kinetic equations for charm quark and charmonium distributions in Pb+Pb collisions, we calculate the global and differential nuclear modification factors RAA(Npart) and RAA(pt) for J/ψ s. Due to the thermal charm production in hot medium, the charmonium production source changes from the initially created charm quarks at SPS, RHIC and LHC to the thermally produced charm quarks at Future Circular Collider (FCC), and the J/ψ suppression (RAA<1) observed so far will be replaced by a strong enhancement (RAA>1) at FCC at low transverse momentum.

Abstract:We investigate with a transport approach the cold and hot nuclear matter effects on the charmonium transverse momentum distributions in relativistic heavy ion collisions. The newly defined nuclear modification factor r(AA) = < p(T)(2)>(AA)/< p(T)(2)>(pp) and elliptic flow v(2) for J/psi are sensitive to the nature of the hot medium and the thermalization of heavy quarks. From Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) through Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) to Large Hadron Collider (LHC) colliding energies, we observe dramatic changes in the centrality dependence of r(AA). We find that, at LHC energy, the finally observed charmonia are dominated by the regeneration from thermalized heavy quarks.

Abstract:We discuss some processes for studying heavy quarkonium production and polarization mechanisms, including photoproduction of ηc and J/ψ polarization in DIS at HERA. The J/ψ hadroproduction at Tevatron in the kt factorization approach is also studied. We find that these processes can provide important tests for heavy quarkonium production, and the color-octet mechansim.

Abstract:Nuclear suppression of charmonium production in proton-nucleus interactions is poorly understood, what restrains our attempts to single out unusual effects in heavy ion collisions. We develop a phenomenological approach, based on the light-cone dynamics of charmonium production, which has much in common with deep-inelastic scattering and Drell-Yan lepton pair production. The key observation is the existence of a soft mechanism of heavy flavour production, which scales in the quark mass and dominates shadowing corrections and diffraction. It naturally explains the surprisingly strong nuclear suppression of J/Psi at large Feynman-x_F. The low-x_F region is subject to a complicated interplay of hard and soft mechanisms. With evaluated parameters we nicely describe available data on charmonium production in proton-nucleus collisions. Using these results we predict a new process, diffractive production of charmonium on a nucleon target, which fraction in the total production rate of charmonium is evaluated at 12%.

Abstract:The charmonium transverse momentum distribution is more sensitive to the nature of the hot quantum chromodynamic matter created in high energy nuclear collisions compared with the yield. Taking a detailed transport approach for charmonium motion together with a hydrodynamic description for the medium evolution, the cancellation between the two hot nuclear matter effects, the dissociation and the regeneration, controls the charmonium transverse momentum distribution. In particular, the second moment of the distribution can be used to differentiate between the hot mediums produced at SPS, RHIC and LHC energies.

Abstract:We compare the transverse momentum (p_T) distribution of inclusive light-charged-particle production measured by the CDF Collaboration at the Fermilab Tevatron with the theoretical prediction evaluated at next-to-leading order in quantum chromodynamics (QCD) using fragmentation functions recently determined through a global data fit. While, in the lower p_T range, the data agree with the prediction within the theoretical error or slightly undershoot it, they significantly exceed it in the upper p_T range, by several orders of magnitude at the largest values of p_T, where perturbation theory should be most reliable. This disagreement is too large to be remedied by introducing additional produced particles into the calculation, and potentially challenges the validity of the factorization theorem on which the parton model of QCD relies. Clearly, a breakdown of the factorization theorem, being a fundamental property of QCD, would be extremely difficult to understand.

Detecting nuclear mass distribution in isobar collisions via charmonium

Abstract:The collective properties of final state hadrons produced in the high statistics $_{44}^{96}$Ru+$_{44}^{96}$Ru and $_{40}^{96}$Zr+$_{40}^{96}$Zr collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}} = 200~\mathrm{GeV}$ are found to be significantly different. Such differences were argued to be precise probes of the difference in nucleon distribution in the isobar nuclei. We investigate the $J/\psi$ production in the isobar collision via a relativistic transport approach. By comparing the isobar systems according to equal centrality bin and equal multiplicity bin, we find that the yield ratio of $J/\psi$ is sensitive to the differences in both the number of binary collisions and the medium evolution. Besides, the elliptic flow $v_2$ of $J/\psi$ is qualitatively different from the light hadrons, and the ratio between Ru+Ru and Zr+Zr collisions is sensitive to the medium evolution. The charmonium production provides an independent probe to study the nucleon distribution in the isobar system.

Triple Charmonium Production in pQCD

Abstract:We study the role of $1\rightarrow2$ and $1\rightarrow3$ processes in triple charmonium production. We see that the ratio of effective cross sections of TPS and DPS only moderately depends on charmonium transverse momenta, but the total DPS and TPS cross sections each separately may have rather strong dependence on charmonia transverse momenta in the central kinematics that can be studied experimentally.
