Abstract:In this work we introduce a Linearized version of the Koringa Khon and Rostoker method (LKKR) and show it to be equivalent to the Linearized Muffin Tin Orbitals method (LMTO). We then present higher derivative versions of both methods, e.g. HDKKR and HDMTO and show them to be partially distinct (not equivalent). In particular HDKKR basis set does not have an equivalent ground state for the Khon Sham (KS) Hamiltonian as the HDKKR basis set and has greater variational power than the HDMTO one. Because the KS method, for Density Functional Theory (DFT), is variational HDKKR will give better ground state energies than HDMTO. However HDKKR is much harder to work with then HDMTO requiring much greater computer resources so HDMTO can often be preferred.

Abstract:The most popular electronic structure method, the linear muffin-tin orbital method (LMTO), in its full-potential (FP) and relativistic forms has been extended to calculate the spectroscopic properties of materials form first principles, i.e, optical spectra, x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) and magneto-optical kerr effect (MOKE). The paper describes an overview of the FP-LMTO basis set and the calculation of the momentum matrix elements. Some applications concerning the computation of optical properties of semiconductors and XMCD spectra of transition metal alloys are reviewed.
LAPW vs. LMTO full-potential simulations and anharmonic dynamics of KNbO3

Abstract:With the aim to get an insight in the origin of differences in the earlier reported calculation results for KNbO3 and to test the recently proposed implementation of the FP-LMTO method by Methfessel and van Schilfgaarde, we perform a comparative study of the ferroelectric instability in KNbO3 by FP-LMTO and LAPW methods. It is shown that a high precision in the description of the charge density variations over the interstitial region in perovskite materials is essential; the technical limitations of the accuracy of charge-density description apparently accounted for previously reported slight disagreement with the LAPW results. With more accurate description of the charge density by sufficiently fine real-space grid, the results obtained by both methods became almost identical. In order to extract additional information (beyond the harmonic approximation) from the total energy fit obtainable in total-energy calculations, a scheme is proposed to solve the multidimensional vibrational Schroedinger equation in the model of non-interacting anharmonic oscillators via the expansion in hyperspherical harmonics.

Abstract:Fyn is 59‐kDa member of the Src family of kinases that is historically associated with T‐cell and neuronal signaling in development and normal cellular physiology. Whereas Src has been heavily studied in cancer, less attention has been traditionally awarded to the other Src kinases such as Fyn. Our group has shown that Fyn is particularly upregulated in prostate cancer in contrast to the alternative members of the Src family. This suggests that it may mediate several important processes attributed to Src kinases in prostate cancer and other malignancies. These functions include not only cellular growth and proliferation but also morphogenesis and cellular motility. Together, these suggest a role for Fyn in both progression and metastasis. As several agents in clinical development affect Fyn activation, understanding the role that Fyn plays in cancer is of great importance in oncology. Cancer 2010. © 2010 American Cancer Society.
All-electron fully relativistic Kohn-Sham theory for solids based on the Dirac-Coulomb Hamiltonian and Gaussian-type functions

Abstract:We present the first full-potential method that solves the fully relativistic 4-component Dirac-Kohn-Sham equation for materials in the solid state within the framework of atom-centered Gaussian-type orbitals (GTOs). Our GTO-based method treats one-, two-, and three-dimensional periodic systems on an equal footing, and allows for a seamless transition to the methodology commonly used in studies of molecules with heavy elements. The scalar relativistic effects and spin-orbit interaction are handled variationally. The full description of the electron-nuclear potential in the core region of heavy nuclei is straightforward due to the local nature of the GTOs and does not pose any computational difficulties. We show how the time-reversal symmetry and a quaternion algebra-based formalism can be exploited to significantly reduce the increased methodological complexity and computational cost associated with multiple wave-function components coupled by the spin-orbit interaction. We provide a description of how to employ the matrix form of the multipole expansion and an iterative renormalization procedure to evaluate the conditionally convergent lattice sums arising for periodic systems. We investigate the problem of inverse variational collapse that arises if the Dirac operator containing a repulsive periodic potential is expressed in a basis containing diffuse functions, and suggest a possible solution. We demonstrate the validity of the method on silver halide crystals with large relativistic effects, and two-dimensional honeycomb structures (silicene and germanene) exhibiting the spin-orbit-driven quantum spin Hall effect. Our results are well-converged with respect to the basis limit using standard bases developed for molecular calculations, and indicate that the rule of removing basis functions with small exponents should not be applied when transferring the molecular basis to solids.

Generalized Kohn-Sham Approach for the Electronic Band Structure of Spin-Orbit Coupled Materials

Abstract:Spin-current density functional theory (SCDFT) is a formally exact framework designed to handle the treatment of interacting many-electron systems including spin-orbit coupling at the level of the Pauli equation. In practice, robust and accurate calculations of the electronic structure of these systems call for functional approximations that depend not only on the densities, but also on spin-orbitals. Here we show that the call can be answered by resorting to an extension of the Kohn-Sham formalism, which admits the use of non-local effective potentials, yet it is firmly rooted in SCDFT. The power of the extended formalism is demonstrated by calculating the spin-orbit-induced band-splittings of inversion-asymmetric MoSe$_2$ monolayer and inversion-symmetric bulk $\alpha$-MoTe$_2$. We show that quantitative agreement with experimental data is obtainable via global hybrid approximations by setting the fraction of Fock exchange at the same level which yields accurate values of the band gap. Key to these results is the ability of the method to self-consistently account for the spin currents induced by the spin-orbit interaction. The widely used method of refining spin-density functional theory by a second-variational treatment of spin-orbit coupling is unable to match our SCDFT results.

Dual Bethe-Salpeter equation for the multi-orbital lattice susceptibility within dynamical mean-field theory

Abstract:Dynamical mean-field theory describes the impact of strong local correlation effects in many-electron systems. While the single-particle spectral function is directly obtained within the formalism, two-particle susceptibilities can also be obtained by solving the Bethe-Salpeter equation. The solution requires handling infinite matrices in Matsubara frequency space. This is commonly treated using a finite frequency cut-off, resulting in slow linear convergence. A decomposition of the two-particle response in local and non-local contributions enables a reformulation of the Bethe-Salpeter equation inspired by the dual boson formalism. The re-formulation has a drastically improved cubic convergence with respect to the frequency cut-off, facilitating the calculation of susceptibilities in multi-orbital systems considerably. This improved convergence arises from the fact that local contributions can be measured in the impurity solver. The dual Bethe-Salpeter equation uses the fully reducible vertex which is free from vertex divergences. We benchmark the approach on several systems including the spin susceptibility of strontium ruthenate Sr$_2$RuO$_4$, a strongly correlated Hund's metal with three active orbitals.

An efficient solution of the multi-term multi-harmonic electron Boltzmann equation for use in global models

Abstract:Solving the electron Boltzmann equation is an essential but costly step in simulating low-temperature plasma kinetics. This work addresses the problem by introducing a solution of the general multi-term multi-harmonic Boltzmann equation (MTMH-BE) optimized for electrons in time-dependent non-equilibrium gases and electric fields. This is accomplished by configuring the numerical Jacobian as the product of a time-independent sparse matrix and an array of time-dependent coefficients. As this approach requires a fixed energy grid, the MTMH-BE is discretized using a finite volume scheme with support for non-uniform cell size, enabling robust solutions across a wide range of reduced field strengths. The new MTMH-BE solver is tested against a range of benchmarks, demonstrating excellent agreement with existing methods. Performance with time-dependent electron energy is evaluated using LoKI-B's pulsed electric field model, with the new solver demonstrating improved wall time scaling and an improvement in grid convergence of over three orders of magnitude. Alternatively, performance with quasi-stationary electrons in an evolving non-equilibrium gas is tested using a nitrogen cross-section set with up to 58 vibrational states and 3,570 processes. Here, the MTMH-BE solver achieves a wall time reduction of up to 99.6% over Multibolt for error-controlled simulations in the two-term limit, reducing the average solution time from 1-2 seconds to less than 10 ms. These results indicate that the new MTMH-BE solver can improve accuracy and performance in state-to-state global models without the use of grid refinement, cross-section pruning, and other time-saving procedures.

A Programmable K·p Hamiltonian Method and Application to Magnetic Topological Insulator MnBi 2 Te 4

Abstract:In the band theory, first-principles calculations, the tight-binding method and the effective k·p model are usually employed to investigate electronic structures of condensed matters. The effective k·p model has a compact form with a clear physical picture, and first-principles calculations can give more accurate results. Nowadays,it has been widely recognized to combine the k·p model and first-principles calculations to explore topological materials. However, the traditional method to derive the k·p Hamiltonian is complicated and time-consuming by hand. We independently developed a programmable algorithm to construct effective k·p Hamiltonians for condensed matters. Symmetries and orbitals are used as the input information to produce the one-/two-/threedimensional k·p Hamiltonian in our method, and the open-source code can be directly downloaded online. At last, we also demonstrated the application to MnBi 2 Te 4 -family magnetic topological materials.
Multiplet ligand-field theory using Wannier orbitals

Abstract:We demonstrate how ab initio cluster calculations including the full Coulomb vertex can be done in the basis of the localized, generalized Wannier orbitals which describe the low-energy density functional (LDA) band structure of the infinite crystal, e.g. the transition metal 3d and oxygen 2p orbitals. The spatial extend of our 3d Wannier orbitals (orthonormalized Nth order muffin-tin orbitals) is close to that found for atomic Hartree-Fock orbitals. We define Ligand orbitals as those linear combinations of the O 2p Wannier orbitals which couple to the 3d orbitals for the chosen cluster. The use of ligand orbitals allows for a minimal Hilbert space in multiplet ligand-field theory calculations, thus reducing the computational costs substantially. The result is a fast and simple ab initio theory, which can provide useful information about local properties of correlated insulators. We compare results for NiO, MnO and SrTiO3 with x-ray absorption, inelastic x-ray scattering, and photoemission experiments. The multiplet ligand field theory parameters found by our ab initio method agree within ~10% to known experimental values.

Abstract:The exact muffin-tin orbitals (EMTO) method belongs to the third and latest generation of first-principles methods of calculating the electronic structure of materials in the so-called approximation of muffin-tin (MT) orbitals within the framework of the density functional theory. A study has been performed of its applicability for modeling the thermodynamic and mechanical properties of the pure components of Ti and Zr based alloys. The total energies of Ti, Zr, Nb, V, Mo, and Al are calculated in three crystal structures – face-centered cubic (FCC), body-centered cubic (BCC), and hexagonal close-packed (HCP). For all of these elements and crystal structures, we have calculated the theoretical values of the lattice constants, elastic constants, and equations of state. The stable crystal structures have been determined. In all cases, calculations by the EMTO method predict the correct structure of the ground state. For stable structures we compared the obtained results with experiment and with calculations using full potential methods. We have demonstrated the reliability of the EMTO method and conclude that its further application for effective modeling of the properties of disordered alloys based on Ti and Zr is possible.

Abstract:While the ground state of magnetic materials is in general well described on the basis of spin den- sity functional theory (SDFT), the theoretical description of finite-temperature and non-equilibrium properties require an extension beyond the standard SDFT. Time-dependent SDFT (TD-SDFT), which give for example access to dynamical properties are computationally very demanding and can currently be hardly applied to complex solids. Here we focus on the alternative approach based on the combination of a parameterized phenomenological spin Hamiltonian and SDFT-based electronic structure calculations, giving access to the dynamical and finite-temperature properties for example via spin-dynamics simulations using the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert (LLG) equation or Monte Carlo simulations. We present an overview on the various methods to calculate the parameters of the various phenomenological Hamiltonians with an emphasis on the KKR Green function method as one of the most flexible band structure methods giving access to practically all relevant parameters. Concerning these, it is crucial to account for the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) by performing rela- tivistic SDFT-based calculations as it plays a key role for magnetic anisotropy and chiral exchange interactions represented by the DMI parameters in the spin Hamiltonian. This concerns also the Gilbert damping parameters characterizing magnetization dissipation in the LLG equation, chiral multispin interaction parameters of the extended Heisenberg Hamiltonian, as well as spin-lattice interaction parameters describing the interplay of spin and lattice dynamics processes, for which an efficient computational scheme has been developed recently by the present authors.
The Orbitally Selective Mott Phase in Electron Doped Twisted TMDs: A Possible Realization of the Kondo Lattice Model

Abstract:Moir\'e super-potentials in two-dimensional materials allow unprecedented control of the ratio between kinetic and interaction energy. By this, they pave the way to study a wide variety of strongly correlated physics under a new light. In particular, the transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are promising candidate "quantum simulators" of the Hubbard model on a triangular lattice. Indeed, Mott and generalized Wigner crystals have been observed in such devices. Here we theoretically propose to extend this model into the multi-orbital regime by focusing on electron doped systems at filling higher than 2. As opposed to hole bands, the electronic bands in TMD materials include two, nearly degenerate species, which can be viewed as two orbitals with different effective mass and binding energy. Using realistic band-structure parameters and a slave-rotor mean-field theory, we find that an orbitally selective Mott (OSM) phase can be stabilized over a wide range of fillings, where one band is locked in a commensurate Mott state, while the other remains itinerant with variable density. This scenario thus, realizes the basic ingredients in the Kondo lattice model: A periodic lattice of localized magnetic moments interacting with metallic states. We also discuss possible experimental signatures of the OSM state.
Solving 2D and 3D lattice models of correlated fermions -- combining matrix product states with mean field theory

Abstract:Correlated electron states are at the root of many important phenomena including unconventional superconductivity (USC), where electron-pairing arises from repulsive interactions. Computing the properties of correlated electrons, such as the critical temperature $T_c$ for the onset of USC, efficiently and reliably from the microscopic physics with quantitative methods remains a major challenge for almost all models and materials. In this theoretical work we combine matrix product states (MPS) with static mean field (MF) to provide a solution to this challenge for quasi-one-dimensional (Q1D) systems: Two- and three-dimensional (2D/3D) materials comprised of weakly coupled correlated 1D fermions. This MPS+MF framework for the ground state and thermal equilibrium properties of Q1D fermions is developed and validated for attractive Hubbard systems first, and further enhanced via analytical field theory. We then deploy it to compute $T_c$ for superconductivity in 3D arrays of weakly coupled, doped and repulsive Hubbard ladders. The MPS+MF framework thus enables the reliable, quantitative and unbiased study of USC and high-$T_c$ superconductivity - and potentially many more correlated phases - in fermionic Q1D systems from microscopic parameters, in ways inaccessible to previous methods. It opens the possibility of designing deliberately optimized Q1D superconductors, from experiments in ultracold gases to synthesizing new materials.

How HF solutions for the TB interacting electrons in 2D predict SCES properties and suggest phenomenology for attaining RTS

Abstract:Former results for a Tight-Binding (TB) model of CuO planes in La2CuO4 are reinterpreted here to underline their wider implications. It is noted that physical systems being appropriately described by the TB model can exhibit the main strongly correlated electron system (SCES) properties, when they are solved in the HF approximation, by also allowing crystal symmetry breaking effects and non-collinear spin orientations of the HF orbitals. It is argued how a simple 2D square lattice system of Coulomb interacting electrons can exhibit insulator gaps and pseudogap states, and quantum phase transitions as illustrated by the mentioned former works. A discussion is also presented here indicating the possibility of attaining room temperature superconductivity, by means of a surface coating with water molecules of cleaved planes of graphite, being orthogonal to its c-axis. The possibility that 2D arrays of quantum dots can give rise to the same effect is also proposed to consideration. The analysis also furnishes theoretical insight to solve the Mott-Slater debate, at least for the La2CuO4 and TMO band structures. The idea is to apply a properly non-collinear GW scheme to the electronic structure calculation of these materials. The fact is that the GW approach can be viewed as a HF procedure in which the screening polarization is also determined. This directly indicates the possibility of predicting the assumed dielectric constant in the previous works. Thus, the results seem to identify that the main correlation properties in these materials are determined by screening. Finally, the conclusions also seem to be of help for the description of the experimental observations of metal-insulator transitions and Mott properties in atoms trapped in planar photonic lattices.

First principles residual resistivity using locally self-consistent multiple scattering method

Abstract:The locally self-consistent multiple scattering (LSMS) method can perform efficient first-principles calculations of systems with large number of atoms. In this work, we combine the Kubo-Greenwood equation with LSMS, enabling us to calculate first-principles residual resistivity of large systems. This has been implemented in the open-source code lsms. We apply this method to selected pure elements and binary random alloys. The results compare well with experiment, and with values obtained from a first-principles effective medium technique (KKR-CPA). We discuss future applications of this method to complex systems where other methods are not applicable.

Open-shell Tensor Hypercontraction

Abstract:The extension of least-squares tensor hypercontracted second- and third-order Møller-Plessett perturbation theory (LS-THC-MP2 and LS-THC-MP3) to open-shell systems is an important development due to the scaling reduction afforded by THC and the ubiquity of molecular ions, radicals, and other open-shell reactive species. The complexity of wavefunction-based quantum chemical methods such as Møller-Plessett and coupled cluster theory is reflected in the steep scaling of the computational costs with the molecular size. The least-squares tensor hypercontraction (LS-THC) method is an efficient, single-step factorization for the two-electron integral tensor, but can also be used to factorize the double excitation amplitudes, leading to significant scaling reduction. Here, we extend this promising method to open-shell variants of LS-THC-MP2 and -MP3 using diagrammatic techniques and explicit spin-summation. The accuracy of the resulting methods for open-shell species is benchmarked on standard tests systems such as regular alkanes, as well as realistic systems involving bond breaking, radical stabilization, and other effects. We find that open-shell LS-THC-MP$n$ methods exhibit errors highly comparable to those produced by closed-shell LS-THC-MP$n$, and are highly insensitive to particular chemical interactions, geometries, or even to moderate spin contamination.

Abstract:The change of a material's electrical resistance (R) in response to an external magnetic field (B) provides subtle information for the characterization of its electronic properties and has found applications in sensor and storage related technologies. In good metals, Boltzmann's theory predicts a quadratic growth in magnetoresistance (MR) at low B, and saturation at high fields. On the other hand, a number of nonmagnetic materials with weak electronic correlation and low carrier concentration for metallicity, such as inhomogeneous conductors, semimetals, narrow gap semiconductors and topological insulators, two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) show positive, non-saturating linear magnetoresistance (LMR). However, observation of LMR in single crystals of a good metal is rare. Here we present low-temperature, angle dependent magnetotransport in single crystals of the antiferromagnetic metal, TmB4. We observe large, positive and anisotropic MR(B), which can be tuned from quadratic to linear by changing the direction of the applied field. In view of the fact that isotropic, single crystalline metals with large Fermi surface (FS) are not expected to exhibit LMR, we attribute our observations to the anisotropic FS topology of TmB4. Furthermore, the linear MR is found to be temperature-independent, suggestive of quantum mechanical origin.

Abstract:We present a derivation of real-time (RT) time-dependent orbital-optimized Møller-Plesset (TDOMP2) theory and its biorthogonal companion, time-dependent non-orthogonal OMP2 theory, starting from the time-dependent bivariational principle and a parametrization based on the exponential orbital-rotation operator formulation commonly used in the time-independent molecular electronic structure theory. We apply the TDOMP2 method to extract absorption spectra and frequency-dependent polarizabilities and first hyperpolarizabilities from RT simulations, comparing the results with those obtained from conventional time-dependent coupled-cluster singles and doubles (TDCCSD) simulations and from its second-order approximation, TDCC2. We also compare our results with those from CCSD and CC2 linear and quadratic response theories. Our results indicate that while TDOMP2 absorption spectra are of the same quality as TDCC2 spectra, including core excitations where optimized orbitals might be particularly important, frequency-dependent polarizabilities and hyperpolarizabilities from TDOMP2 simulations are significantly closer to TDCCSD results than those from TDCC2 simulations.
