Abstract:We present the results of ultraviolet (UV) photometry of the old open cluster M67 obtained using Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) in far-ultraviolet (FUV) and near-ultraviolet (NUV) bands. UV detections of 18 blue straggler stars (BSSs), 3 white dwarfs (WDs), 4 yellow straggler stars, 2 sub-subgiants, and 25 X-ray sources are presented (along with an online catalog). We demonstrate the capability of UV colour magnitude diagrams (CMDs) along with the UV isochrones to identify potential stars which defy standard stellar evolution in this well studied cluster. We also detect a few main sequence turn-off and subgiant branch stars with excess flux in the FUV and/or NUV. UV continuum excess as well as Mg II $\it h$ +$\it k$ emission lines from the IUE archival spectra for 2 red giants are detected, suggestive of their chromospheric activity. We suggest that a large number of stars in this cluster are chromospherically active, whereas the bright BSS are unlikely to be active. We also estimate the fundamental parameters L/L$_{\odot}$, R/R$_{\odot}$ and T$_{eff}$ of the BSSs and 15 FUV bright stars by constructing the spectral energy distribution (SED) using multi-wavelength data. We identify three groups among the BSSs, based on their properties. The H-R diagram of BSSs with isochrones suggests that the BSSs in M67 are formed in the last 2.5 Gyr - 400 Myr, more or less continuously. We identify 7 potential MS+WD candidates based on large UV excess from a probable 11, based on SEDs.

UOCS-XII. A study of open cluster NGC 6940 using UVIT/AstroSat: cluster properties and exotic populations

Abstract:We study an open cluster NGC 6940 using \textit{AstroSat}/UVIT data and other archival data. This is an intermediate age cluster ($\sim$ 1 Gyr), located at about 770 pc distance, harboring several exotic populations apart from normal single and binary stars. We identify members of this cluster using a machine learning algorithm, ML-MOC and identify 492 members, including 1 blue straggler star (BSS), 2 yellow straggler stars (YSS), 11 blue lurker (BL) candidates, and 2 red clump (RC) stars. The cluster shows the effect of mass segregation, with massive stars segregated the most into the cluster, followed by the equal-mass binary members and the single low mass stars. We report the presence of an extended main-sequence turn-off (eMSTO) feature in this cluster and suggest that the age spread may be a contributing factor behind it. However, the effect of stellar rotation, and the dust absorption needs to be examined more comprehensively with a larger fraction of MSTO stars. All the sixteen sources mentioned above have a counterpart in the UVIT/F169M filter. In order to characterize them, we construct multi-wavelength spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of 14 of these objects having no nearby sources within 3". The BSS is successfully fitted with a single-component SED. We find that three BLs, two YSS, and one RC star have UV excess greater than 50$\%$ and successfully fit two-component SEDs having hot companions. The parameters derived from the SEDs imply that the hot companions of BLs and the RC star are low-mass and normal-mass white dwarfs, whereas the hot companions of YSS are likely to be subdwarf B (sdB) stars. We suggest that at least 6 out of 14 stars ($\sim$42 $\%$) are formed via mass transfer and/or merger pathways.

Abstract:NGC 6791 is one of the richest old open clusters in the Milky Way. Its position above the Galactic plane and the number density makes it an interesting middle ground between Galactic open and globular clusters. We aim to detect the UV bright population of NGC 6791 using \textit{AstroSat}/UVIT images in near-UV and far-UV filters and characterise the known post mass transfer systems such as blue straggler stars (BSSs). We identified 20 members with large UV flux (out of 91 cluster members among 1180 detections), suggestive of binarity, interactions or stellar activity using multi-wavelength spectral energy distribution analysis. We characterised 62 isolated cluster members, including five hot subdwarfs (sdA/sdB). Additionally, we detected ten sdA/sdB/extremely low mass white dwarf (ELM) type candidates hidden alongside other cluster members. Additionally, we report the discovery of four candidate blue lurkers, which are main sequence stars with mass accretion history. We report that this cluster has a variety of stellar (pre-)remnants, such as sdBs, sdAs, and ELM white dwarfs, that are by-products of binary evolution. The above are likely to be post mass transfer binaries found throughout the evolutionary phases from the main sequence to the post horizontal branch. Therefore, this dynamically old open cluster is unique, making it an ideal testbed for dynamical studies.

Hot Stellar Populations of Berkeley 39 using Swift/UVOT

Abstract:Open clusters are excellent tools to probe the history of the Galactic disk and properties of star formation. In this work, we present a study of an old age open cluster Berkley 39 using the observations from UVOT instrument of the Neil Gehrels Swift observatory. Making use of a machine learning algorithm, ML-MOC, we have identified a total of 861 stars as cluster members out of which 17 are blue straggler stars. In this work, we present a characterisation of 2 blue straggler stars. To estimate the fundamental parameters of blue straggler stars and their companions (if any), we constructed spectral energy distributions using UV data from swift/UVOT and GALEX, optical data from Gaia DR3, and infrared (IR) data from 2MASS, Spitzer/IRAC, and WISE. We find excess flux in UV in one blue straggler star, implying the possibility of a hot companion.

Abstract:We present analysis of deep CCD photometry for the very rich, old open star cluster NGC 6819. These CFH12K data results represent the first of nineteen open star clusters which were imaged as a part of the CFHT Open Star Cluster Survey. We find a tight, very rich, main-sequence and turn-off consisting of over 2900 cluster stars in the V, B-V color-magnitude diagram (CMD). Main-sequence fitting of the un-evolved cluster stars with the Hyades star cluster yields a distance modulus of (m-M)v = 12.30 +/- 0.12, for a reddening of E(B-V) = 0.10. These values are consistent with a newly calculated theoretical stellar isochrone of age 2.5 Gyrs, which we take to be the age of the cluster. Detailed star counts indicate a much larger cluster extent (R = 9.5' +/- 1.0'), by a factor of ~2 over some previous estimates. Incompleteness tests confirm a slightly negatively sloped luminosity function extending to faint (V ~ 23) magnitudes which is indicative of a dynamically evolved cluster. Further luminosity function and mass segregation tests indicate that low mass objects (M < 0.65Mo) predominate in the outer regions of the cluster, 3.5 < R < 9.5. The estimation of the number of white dwarfs in NGC 6819 are in good agreement with the observed number. For those white dwarf candidates which pass both a statistical and image classification tests, we show comparisons to white dwarf isochrones and cooling models which suggest the need for spectroscopy to confirm the white dwarf nature of the brighter objects.

Hot Stars in Globular Cluster - A Spectroscopist's View

Abstract:Globular clusters are ideal laboratories to study the evolution of low-mass stars. In this work we concentrate on three types of hot stars observed in globular clusters: horizontal branch stars, UV bright stars, and white dwarfs. After providing some historical background and information on gaps and blue tails we discuss extensively hot horizontal branch stars in metal-poor globular clusters, esp. their abundance anomalies and the consequences for the determination of their atmospheric parameters and evolutionary status. Hot horizontal branch stars in metal-rich globular clusters are found to form a small, but rather inhomogeneous group that cannot be explained by one evolutionary scenario. Hot UV bright stars show a lack of classic post-AGB stars that may explain the lack of planetary nebulae in globular clusters. Finally we discuss first results of spectroscopic observations of white dwarfs in globular clusters.

Abstract:This work is contextualized in research in modeling and simulation of infection spread within a community or population, with the objective to provide a public health and policy tool in assessing the dynamics of infection spread and the qualitative impacts of public health interventions. This work uses the integration of real data sources into an Agent Based Model (ABM) to simulate respiratory infection spread within a small municipality. Novelty is derived in that the data sources are not necessarily obvious within ABM infection spread models. The ABM is a spatial-temporal model inclusive of behavioral and interaction patterns between individual agents on a real topography. The agent behaviours (movements and interactions) are fed by census / demographic data, integrated with real data from a telecommunication service provider (cellular records) and person-person contact data obtained via a custom 3G Smartphone application that logs Bluetooth connectivity between devices. Each source provides data of varying type and granularity, thereby enhancing the robustness of the model. The work demonstrates opportunities in data mining and fusion that can be used by policy and decision makers. The data become real-world inputs into individual SIR disease spread models and variants, thereby building credible and non-intrusive models to qualitatively simulate and assess public health interventions at the population level.
M67 Blue Stragglers with High-resolution Infrared Spectroscopy

Abstract:We report on the first detailed infrared chemical analysis of five binary members (S277, S997, S975, S1031, and S1195) in the open cluster M67 (NGC 2682). These stars are located outside (bluer and/or brighter than) the main-sequence turnoff region in M67. High-resolution (R ~ 45,000) near-infrared spectra were obtained with the Immersion GRating INfrared Spectrograph (IGRINS) at the McDonald Observatory 2.7 m Harlan J. Smith Telescope, providing full spectral coverage of the H and K bands. The abundances of C, Na, Mg, Al, Si, S, Ca, Fe, and Ni are measured using neutral atomic absorption lines. We detect v sin i greater than or equal to 25 km s-1 in three of our program stars: S1031, S975, and S1195. We find our derived abundances to be in good agreement with turnoff star abundances, similar to published analyses of blue straggler stars in M67 from optical spectra. Detection of a carbon enhancement or depletion resulting from mass transfer is difficult due to the uncertainties in the carbon abundance and the relatively modest changes that may occur through red giant and asymptotic giant branch evolution.

Abstract:We present the UV photometry of the old open cluster NGC188 obtained using images acquired with Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UVIT) on board the ASTROSAT satellite, in two far-UV (FUV) and one near-UV (NUV) filters. UVIT data is utilised in combination with optical photometric data to construct the optical and UV colour-magnitude diagrams (CMDs). In the FUV images, we detect only hot and bright blue straggler stars (BSSs), one hot subdwarf, and one white dwarf (WD) candidate. In the NUV images, we detect members up to a faintness limit of ~22 mag including 21 BSSs, 2 yellow straggler stars (YSSs), and one WD candidate. This study presents the first NUV-optical CMDs, and are overlaid with updated BaSTI-IAC isochrones and WD cooling sequence, which are found to fit well to the observed CMDs. We use spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting to estimate the effective temperatures, radii, and luminosities of the UV-bright stars. We find the cluster to have an HB population with three stars (Teff = 4750 - 21000 K). We also detect two yellow straggler stars, with one of them with UV excess connected to its binarity and X-ray emission.

Abstract:Young and intermediate-age star clusters of both Magellanic Clouds exhibit complex color-magnitude diagrams. In addition to the extended main-sequence turn-offs (eMSTOs), commonly observed in star clusters younger than ~2 Gyr, the clusters younger than ~800 Myr exhibit split main sequences (MSs). These comprise a blue MS, composed of stars with low-rotation rates, and a red MS, which hosts fast-rotating stars. While it is widely accepted that stellar populations with different rotation rates are responsible for the eMSTOs and split MSs, their formation and evolution are still debated. A recent investigation of the ~1.7 Gyr old cluster NGC1783 detected a group of eMSTO stars extremely dim in UV bands. Here, we use multi-band Hubble Space Telescope photometry to investigate five star clusters younger than ~200 Myr, including NGC1805, NGC1818, NGC1850, and NGC2164 in the Large Magellanic Cloud, and the Small-Magellanic Cloud cluster NGC330. We discover a group of bright MS stars in each cluster that are significantly dim in the F225W and F275W bands, similar to what is observed in NGC1783. Our result suggests that UV-dim stars are common in young clusters. The evidence that most of them populate the blue MS indicates that they are slow rotators. As a byproduct, we show that the star clusters NGC1850 and BHRT5b exhibit different proper motions, thus corroborating the evidence that they are not gravitationally bound.

Abstract:We present nine color CCD intermediate-band spectrophotometry of a two square deg(2) field centered on the old open cluster M67, from 3890 Angstrom to nearly 1 mu m. These observations are taken as a part of the BATC (Beijing-Arizona-Taipei-Connecticut) Color Survey of the Sky, for both scientific and calibration reasons. The BATC program uses a dedicated 60/90 cm Schmidt telescope with a 2048 x 2048 CCD and 15 specially-designed intermediate-band filters to be applied to both galactic and extragalactic studies. With these data we show that the BATC survey can reach its goal of obtaining spectrophotometry to a zero point accuracy of 0.01 mag, and down to V = 21 with 0.3 mag random error. Nine-band spectrophotometry of 6558 stars is presented. Systematic issues studied include the effect of image undersampling, astrometric accuracy and transformation from BATC photometric system to broad-band systems. We fit the color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) with Worthey's theoretical models. The net result is the excellent fit of the 4.0 Gyr, [Fe/H] = -0.10 model to our data, including a good fit to the main sequence (MS) turnoff, This fit predicts (m - M)(0) = 9.47 +/- 0.16 and E(B - V) between 0.015 and 0.052, We show that 16% of stars in M67 are binaries with mass-ratio larger than 0.7. Our data are consistent with a toy model with 50% of the stars in M67 being binaries and a random distribution of binary mass-ratios, although other models with different mass-ratio distributions cannot be ruled out. The spatial distribution and mass function (MF) of stars in M67 show marked effects of dynamical evolution and evaporation of stars from the cluster. Blue stragglers and binary stars are the most condensed within the cluster, with degree of condensation depending on mass. The inner part of M67 is missing most of the lower mass MS stars. We find M67 to have an elongated shape, oriented at an angle of 15 degrees relative to the galactic plane. Within its tidal radius, the observed MF of M67 between 1.2 M. and 0.8 M. has a Salpeter slope eta = -1.93 +/- 0.66. For stars of mass below 0.8 M., eta similar to 0. It is plausible that the leveling-off of the MF at lower masses is a result of evaporation of lower mass stars in this mass range at a rate of one every similar to 10(7) years. If so, it is plausible that the IMF of M67 has the canonical field value of eta = -2.0. Overall, we find the stellar distribution as a function of mass within M67, and the observed MF, are in good agreement with theoretical predictions of dynamical evolution and evaporation of an old galactic cluster. Moreover, the fraction of binary stars and inferred IMF for higher mass main sequence stars for this old galactic cluster are consistent with known field star values. This implies a similarity of IMF that persists for at least 4 Gyr in the disk of our Galaxy. (C) 1995 American Astronomical Society.

Abstract:King 2, one of the oldest clusters in the Milky Way, with an age of $\sim$ 6 Gyr and distance of $\sim 5700$ pc, has been observed with UVIT payload on the \textit{ASTROSAT}. With membership information derived from {\it Gaia} EDR3, the cluster is found to have 39 blue straggler stars (BSSs). We created multi-wavelength spectra-energy distributions (SED) of all the BSSs. Out of 10 UV detected BSSs, 6 bright ones fitted with double component SEDs and were found to have hotter companions with properties similar to extreme horizontal branch (EHB)/subdwarf B (sdB) stars, with a range in luminosity and temperature, suggesting a diversity among the hot companions. We suggest that at least 15\% of BSSs in this cluster are formed via mass-transfer pathway. When we compared their properties to EHBs and hotter companions to BSS in open and globular clusters, we suggest that EHB/sdBs like companions can form in binaries of open clusters as young as 6 Gyr.

Time-Series Photometry of M67: W UMa Systems, Blue Stragglers, and Related Systems

Abstract:We present an analysis of over 2200 V images taken on 14 nights at the Mt. Laguna 1 m telescope of the open cluster M67. Our observations overlap but extend beyond the field analyzed by Gilliland et al. (1991), and complement data recently published by van den Berg et al. (2002) and Stassun et al. (2002). We show variability in the light curves of all 4 of the known W UMa variables on timescales ranging from a day to decades (for AH Cnc). We have modeled the light curve of AH Cnc, and the total eclipses allow us to determine q = 0.16 +0.03/-0.02 and i = 86 +4/-8 degrees. The position of this system near the turnoff of M67 makes it useful for constraining the turnoff mass for the cluster. We have also detected two unusual features in the light curve of AH Cnc that may be caused by prominences. We have also monitored cluster blue stragglers for variability, and we present evidence hinting at low level variations in the stragglers S752, S968, and S1263, and we place limits on the variability of a number of other cluster blue stragglers. Finally, we provide photometry of the sub-subgiant branch star S1063 showing variability on timescales similar to the orbital period, while the ``red straggler'' S1040 shows evidence of an unexplained drop in brightness at phases corresponding to the passage of the white dwarf in front of the giant.

Abstract:We present the study of four far-ultraviolet (FUV) bright stars in the field of the open cluster NGC 2420 using the Ultra Violet Imaging Telescope mounted on AstroSat. The three stars 525, 527, and 560 are members, while star 646 is a nonmember of the cluster. To characterize and determine the parameters of these stars, multiwavelength spectral energy distributions (SEDs) are analyzed using UV, optical, and IR data sets. For all four FUV bright stars, a two-component SED model fits well. Our findings indicate that two stars, 525 and 560, are binary blue straggler star (BSS) systems. These BSS systems may have formed in a tertiary system due to mass transfer from an evolved outer tertiary companion. Star 527 is a binary system of a BSS and an extremely low-mass (ELM) white dwarf, while star 646 is a binary system of a horizontal branch star and an ELM white dwarf. The effective temperatures, radii, luminosities, and masses of the two ELMs are (10250, 11500) K (0.42, 0.12) R ⊙ , (1.61, 0.23) L ⊙ , and (0.186, 0.170) M ⊙ , respectively. The star 527 could be a post-mass-transfer system and may have originated through the Case A/B mass-transfer process in a low-density environment. The cooling age of the ELMs is < 1 Myr, indicating that they have only recently formed.

Investigating the UV-excess in Star Clusters with N-body Simulations: Predictions for Future CSST Observations*

Abstract:We study the origin of the UV-excess in star clusters by performing N-body simulations of six clusters with N = 10 k and N = 100 k(single stars & binary systems) and metallicities of Z = 0.01, 0.001 and 0.0001, using PETAR. All models initially have a 50% primordial binary fraction. Using Galev NB we convert the simulated data into synthetic spectra and photometry for the China Space Station Telescope(CSST) and Hubble Space Telescope(HST). From the spectral energy distributions we identify three stellar populations that contribute to the UVexcess:(1) second asymptotic giant branch stars, which contribute to the UV flux at early times;(2) naked helium stars and(3) white dwarfs, which are long-term contributors to the FUV spectra. Binary stars consisting of a white dwarf and a main sequence star are cataclysmic variable(CV) candidates. The magnitude distribution of CV candidates is bimodal up to 2 Gyr. The bright CV population is particularly bright in FUV-NUV. The FUV-NUV color of our model clusters is 1–2 mag redder than the UV-excess globular clusters in M87 and in the Milky Way. This discrepancy may be induced by helium enrichment in observed clusters. Our simulations are based on simple stellar evolution; we do not include the effects of variations in helium and light elements or multiple stellar populations. A positive radial color gradient is present in CSST NUV-y for main sequence stars in all models with a color difference of 0.2–0.5 mag, up to 4 half-mass radii. The CSST NUV-g color correlates strongly with HST FUV-NUV for NUV-g > 1 mag, with the linear relation FUV-NUV =(1.09 ± 0.12) ×(NUV-g) +(-1.01 ± 0.22). This allows for conversion of future CSST NUV-g colors into HST FUV-NUV colors, which are sensitive to UV-excess features. We find that CSST will be able to detect UVexcess in Galactic/extragalactic star clusters with ages >200 Myr.
UOCS-IX. AstroSat/UVIT study of the open cluster NGC 2818: Blue Stragglers, Yellow Stragglers, Planetary Nebula, and their membership

Abstract:We present the first far-UV (FUV) imaging results of the intermediate-age Galactic open cluster NGC 2818 that has a Planetary nebula (PN) within the field using images taken from the Ultra-violet Imaging Telescope (UVIT) aboard AstroSat. We identify cluster members by combining UVIT-detected sources with Gaia EDR3 data. We detect four bright and hot blue straggler stars (BSSs) and two yellow straggler stars (YSSs) based on their location in the optical and FUV-optical color-magnitude diagrams. Based on the parameters estimated using Spectral Energy Distribution (SED), we infer that BSSs are either collisional products or might have undetectable white dwarf (WD) companions. Our photometric analysis of YSSs confirms their binarity, consistent with the spectroscopic results. We find YSSs to be formed through a mass-transfer scenario and the hot components are likely to be A-type subdwarfs. A comparison of the radial velocity (RV), Gaia EDR3 proper motion of the PN with the cluster, and reddening towards the PN and the cluster does not rule out the membership of the PN. Comparing the central star's position with theoretical pAGB models suggest that it has already entered the WD cooling phase, and its mass is deduced to be ~0.66Msun. The corresponding progenitor mass turns out to be ~2.1Msun, comparable to the turn-off mass of the cluster, implying that the progenitor could have formed in the cluster. We suggest that the NGC 2818 might be one of the few known clusters to host a PN, providing a unique opportunity to test stellar evolution models.

HST FUV Spectroscopy of Super Star Cluster A in the Green Pea Analog Mrk 71: Revealing the Presence of Very Massive Stars

Abstract:Mrk 71 is a low metallicity (Z = 0.16 Z_sun) starburst region in the local dwarf galaxy NGC 2366, hosting two super star clusters (SSCs A and B), and is recognized as a Green Pea (GP) analog with SSC A responsible for the GP properties. We present STIS and FOS far-ultraviolet (FUV) spectra of the embedded SSC Mrk 71-A obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). The STIS FUV spectrum shows the characteristic features of very massive stars (VMS, masses > 100 M_sun) and we derive an age of 1+/-1 Myr by comparison with the Charlot & Bruzual suite of spectral population synthesis models with upper mass limits of 300 and 600 M_sun. We compare the STIS spectrum with all known SSC spectra exhibiting VMS signatures: NGC 5253-5, R136a, NGC 3125-A1 and the z = 2.37 Sunburst cluster. We find that the cluster mass-loss rates and wind velocities, as characterized by the C IV P Cygni profiles and the He II emission line strengths, are very similar over Z = 0.16 to 0.4 Z_sun. This agrees with predictions that the optically thick winds of VMS will be enhanced near the Eddington limit and show little metallicity dependence. We find very strong damped Lyman-alpha absorption with log N(H I) = 22.2 cm-2 associated with Mrk 71-A. We discuss the natal environment of this young SSC in terms of radiatively-driven winds, catastrophic cooling and recent models where the cluster is surrounded by highly pressurized clouds with large neutral columns.

Abstract:We present a study of blue straggler stars (BSSs) of open cluster NGC 7142 using AstroSat/UVIT data and other archival data. Using a machine learning-based algorithm, ML-MOC, on Gaia DR3 data, we find 546 sources as cluster members. Based on the location on the Gaia color-magnitude diagram, we identify ten BSS candidates, also detected in UVIT/F148W filter. We study the variable nature of BSSs by constructing their light curves using the TESS data. Two BSSs reported as eclipsing binaries in Gaia DR3 are confirmed to be eclipsing binaries based on our analysis and also show the presence of hot companions as per the multi-wavelength spectral energy distributions (SEDs). The physical parameters of the hot companions of these two BSSs derived by fitting binary models to their light curves and those derived from the SEDs are found to be in good agreement. Additionally, five more BSSs in the cluster shows UV excess, four of which are likely to have a hot companion based on SEDs. The hot companions with the estimated temperatures $\sim$14000 $-$ 28000 K, radii $\sim$0.01 $-$ 0.05 R$_{\odot}$, and luminosities $\sim$0.03 $-$ 0.1 L$_{\odot}$, are inferred to be extremely low mass ($<$ 0.2 M$_{\odot}$), low-mass (0.2 $-$ 0.4 M$_{\odot}$), normal-mass (0.4 $-$ 0.6 M$_{\odot}$), and high-mass ($>$ 0.6 M$_{\odot}$) white dwarfs (WD). For the first time in an open cluster, we find the entire range of masses in WDs found as hot companions of BSSs. These masses imply that the Case-A/Case-B mass transfer as well as merger are responsible for the formation of at least 60$\%$ of the BSSs of this cluster.

Abstract:We present a reanalysis of far-ultraviolet (FUV) observations of the globular cluster NGC 2808 obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope. These data were first analyzed by Brown and coworkers, with an emphasis on the bright, blue horizontal branch (HB) stars in this cluster. Here, our focus is on the population of fainter FUV sources, which include white dwarfs (WDs), blue stragglers (BSs) and cataclysmic variables (CVs). We have therefore constructed the deepest FUV-NUV colour-magnitude diagram of NGC 2808 and also searched for variability among our FUV sources. Overall, we have found approx. 40 WD, approx. 60 BS and approx. 60 CV candidates; three of the BSs and two of the CV candidates are variable. We have also recovered a known RR Lyrae star in the core of NGC 2808, which exhibits massive (approx. 4 mag) FUV variability. We have investigated the radial distribution and found that our CV and BS candidates are more centrally concentrated than the HBs and WD candidates. This might be an effect of mass segregation, but could as well be due to the preferential formation of such dynamically-formed objects in the dense cluster core. For one of our CV candidates we found a counterpart in WFPC2 optical data published by Piotto and coworkers.

Abstract:We present two series of MOST (Microvariability & Oscillations of STars) space-based photometry, covering nearly continuously 10 days in 2004 and 30 days in 2007, of selected variable stars in the upper Main Sequence of the old open cluster M67. New high-precision light curves were obtained for the blue-straggler binary/triple systems AH Cnc, ES Cnc and EV Cnc. The precision and phase coverage of ES Cnc and EV Cnc is by far superior to any previous observations. The light curve of ES Cnc is modelled in detail, assuming two dark photospheric spots and Roche geometry. An analysis of the light curve of AH Cnc indicates a low mass ratio (q about 0.13) and a high inclination angle for this system. Two new long-period eclipsing binaries, GSC 814-323 and HD75638 (non-members of M67) were discovered. We also present ground-based DDO spectroscopy of ES Cnc and of the newly found eclipsing binaries. Especially interesting is HD75638, a member of a visual binary, which must itself be a triple or a higher-multiplicity system. New light curves of two delta Scuti pulsators, EX Cnc and EW Cnc, have been analyzed leading to detection of 26 and 8 pulsation frequencies of high temporal stability.
