Abstract:We analyzed HST/WFPC2 colour-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) of 15 populous Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) stellar clusters with ages between ~ 0.3 Gyr and ~ 3 Gyr. These (V, B-V) CMDs are photometrically homogeneous and typically reach V \~ 22. Accurate and self-consistent physical parameters (age, metallicity, distance modulus and reddening) were extracted for each cluster by comparing the observed CMDs with synthetic ones. These determinations involved simultaneous statistical comparisons of the main-sequence fiducial line and the red clump position, offering objective and robust criteria to determine the best models. The models explored a regular grid in the parameter space covered by previous results found in the literature. In general, the best models show a satisfactory fit to the data, constraining well the physical parameters of each cluster. The age-metallicity relation derived by us presents a lower spread than similar results found in the literature for the same clusters. Our results are in accordance with the published ages for the oldest clusters, but reveal a possible underestimation of ages by previous authors for the youngest clusters. Our metallicity results in general agree with the ones based on spectroscopy of giant stars and with recent works involving CMD analyses. The derived distance moduli implied by the most reliable solutions, correlate with the reddening values, as expected from the non-negligible three-dimensional distribution of the clusters within the LMC. The inferred spatial distribution for these clusters is roughly aligned with the LMC disk, being also more scattered than recent numerical predictions, indicating that they were not formed in the LMC disk. The set of ages and metallicities homogeneously derived here can be used to calibrate integrated light studies applied to distant galaxies.

Abstract:We aim to analyze the chemical evolution of the Small Magellanic Cloud adding 12 additional clusters to our existing sample having accurate and homogeneously derived metallicities. We are particularly interested in seeing if there is any correlation between age and metallicity for the different structural components to which the clusters belong. Spectroscopic metallicities of red giant stars are derived from the measurement of the equivalent width of the near-IR calcium triplet lines. Cluster membership analysis was carried out using criteria that include radial velocities, metallicities, proper motions and distance from the cluster center. The mean cluster radial velocity and metallicity were determined with a typical error of 2.1 km/s and 0.03 dex, respectively. We added this information to that available in the literature for other clusters studied with the same method, compiling a final sample of 48 clusters with metallicities homogeneously determined. Clusters of the final sample are distributed in an area of ~ 70 deg^2 and cover an age range from 0.4 Gyr to 10.5 Gyr. The metallicity distribution of our new cluster sample shows a lower probability of being bimodal than suggested in previous studies. The separate chemical analysis of clusters in the six components (Main Body, Counter-Bridge, West Halo, Wing/Bridge, Northern Bridge and Southern Bridge) shows that only clusters belonging to the Northern Bridge appear to trace a V-Shape, showing a clear inversion of the metallicity gradient in the outer regions. There is a suggestion of a metallicity gradient in the West Halo, similar to that previously found for field stars. It presents, however, a very large uncertainty. Also, clusters belonging to the West Halo, Wing/Bridge and Southern Bridge exhibit a well-defined age-metallicity relation with relatively little scatter in abundance at fixed age compared to other regions.

An in-depth view of the metallicity distribution of the Small Magellanic Cloud

Abstract:The spatial metallicity distribution of star clusters in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) has recently been found to correlate as a V-shaped function with the semi-major axis of an elliptical framework proposed to assume a projected galaxy flattening. We report results on the impact that the use of such a framework can produce on our understanding of the SMC formation and its chemical enrichment. We show that clusters with similar semi-major axes are placed at a very different distances from the SMC centre. The recently claimed bimodal metallicity distribution of clusters projected on the innermost SMC regions and the V-shaped metallicity gradient fade away when actual distances are used. Although a large dispersion prevails, clusters older than $\sim$ 1 Gyr exhibit a shallow metallicity gradient, caused by slightly different spatial distributions of clusters younger and older than $\sim$ 4 Gyr; the former being more centrally concentrated and having a mean metallicity ([Fe/H]) $\sim$ 0.15 dex more metal-rich than that of older clusters. This metallicity gradient does not show any dependence with the position angle, except for clusters placed beyond 11 kpc, which are located in the eastern side of the galaxy.

Revisiting a detached stellar structure in the outer northeastern region of the Small Magellanic Cloud

Abstract:The outer northeastern region of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) is populated by a shell-like overdensity whose nature was recently investigated. We analyzed twenty catalogued star clusters projected onto it from Survey of the MAgellanic Stellar History data sets. After carrying out a cleaning of field stars in the star cluster colour-magnitude diagrams (CMDs), and deriving their astrophysical properties from the comparison between the observed and synthetic CMDs, we found that four objects are not genuine star clusters, while the remaining ones are young star clusters (11, age $\sim$ 30-200 Myr) and intermediate-age (5, age $\sim$ 1.7-2.8 Gyr) star clusters, respectively. The resulting distances show that intermediate-age and some young star clusters belong to the SMC main body, while the remaining young star clusters are nearly 13.0 kpc far away from those in the SMC, revealing that the shell-like overdensity is more extended along the line-of-sight than previously thought. We also found a clear age trend and a blurred metallicity correlation along the line-of-sight of young clusters, in the sense that the farther a star cluster from the SMC, the younger, the more metal rich, and the less massive it is. These young clusters are also affected by a slightly larger interstellar reddening than the older ones in the shell-like overdensity. These outcomes suggest that the shell-like overdensity can possibly be another tidally perturbed/formed SMC stellar structure from gas striped off its body, caused by the interaction with the Large Magellanic Cloud or the Milky Way.

Hints for multiple populations in intermediate-age clusters of the Small Magellanic Cloud

Abstract:We report on the magnitude of the intrinsic [Fe/H] spread in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) intermediate-age massive clusters NGC 339, 361, Lindsay 1 and 113, respectively. In order to measure the cluster metallicity dispersions, we used accurate Stromgren photometry of carefully selected cluster red giant branch (RGB) stars. We determined the Fe-abundance spreads by employing a maximum likelihood approach. The spreads obtained using the more accurate photometry of the brighter RGB stars resulted to be marginal (~ 0.05+-0.03 dex) for NGC 339 and NGC 361, while for Lindsay 1 and Lindsay 113 we obtained metallicity spreads of 0.00+-0.04 dex. From these results, we speculated with the possibility that NGC 361 is added to the group of four SMC clusters with observational evidence of multiple populations (MPs). Furthermore, in the context of the present debate about the existence of Fe-abundance inhomogeneities among old clusters with MPs, these outcomes put new constrains to recent theoretical speculations for making this phenomenon visible.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Stellar ages are critical for understanding the temporal evolution of a galaxy. We calculate the ages of over 6000 red giant branch stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) observed with SDSS-IV / APOGEE-S. Ages are derived using multiband photometry, spectroscopic parameters ($\rm T_{eff}$, $\log {g}$, [Fe/H], and [$\alpha$/Fe]) and stellar isochrones and the assumption that the stars lie in a thin inclined plane to get accurate distances. The isochrone age and extinction are varied until a best match is found for the observed photometry. We perform validation using the APOKASC sample, which has asteroseismic masses and accurate ages, and find that our uncertainties are $\sim$20 per cent and range from $\sim$1–3 Gyr for the calculated ages (most reliable below 10 Gyr). Here we present the LMC age map as well as the age–radius relation and an accurate age–metallicity relation (AMR). The age map and age–radius relation reveal that recent star formation in the galaxy was more centrally located and that there is a slight dichotomy between the north and south with the northern fields being slightly younger. The northern fields that cover a known spiral arm have median ages of $\gtrsim$2 Gyr, which is the time when an interaction with the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) is suggested to have happened. The AMR is mostly flat especially for older ages although recently (about 2.0–2.5 Gyr ago) there is an increase in the median [Fe/H]. Based on the time frame, this might also be attributed to the close interaction between the LMC and SMC.

Testing Stellar Population Models with Star Clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud

Abstract:We present high S/N integrated spectra of 24 star clusters in the LMC obtained using the FLAIR spectrograph at the UK Schmidt. The spectra have been placed onto the Lick/IDS system in order to test the calibration of Simple Stellar Population (SSP) models. We have compared the SSP-predicted metallicities of the clusters with literature Ca-Triplet values, and find that there is good agreement in the range --2.10 < [Fe/H] < 0. However, the magnesium indices systematically predict higher metallicities than iron, among the possible explanations for this are that the LMC clusters possess [alpha/Fe] > 0. We present metallicities for 11 clusters with no previous measurements. Comparison of the SSP ages of the clusters (from Balmer lines) with the literature data shows good agreement for the majority. This includes six old globular clusters in our sample, which have ages consistent with their HST CMD turn-offs. However, two clusters, NGC 1754 and NGC 2005, have Hbeta line-strengths which lead to ages which are too young (~8 and ~6 Gyr respectively at 3 sigma) for their HST CMDs. Comparison between the horizontal branch (HB) morphology and Balmer lines of these clusters suggests that blue HBs have increased their Balmer indices by up to ~1.0 angstrom. We conclude that the Lick/IDS indices, used in conjunction with contemporary SSP models, are able to reproduce the ages and metallicities of the LMC clusters reassuringly well. However, SSP model ages derived for metal-poor globular clusters are ambiguous without a priori knowledge of HB morphology (abridged).

Abstract:BACKGROUND If oxidized low-density lipoprotein (oxLDL), LDL, lysophosphatidylcholine (LPC) and apolipoprotein B (apoB) can be visualized simultaneously, their roles in the initiation, progression and destabilization of atherosclerotic plaques can be objectively evaluated. METHODS AND RESULTS (1) The fluorescence characteristic of each atherogenic substance was investigated by microscopy using a band-pass filter (470 nm) and a band-absorption filter (520 nm) with homidium bromide (Ho) and trypan blue (TB) as indicators. (2) 50 excised human coronary plaques were classified by their autofluorescence into green, greenish-yellow and yellow, and the localization of oxLDL, LDL, LPC and apoB were investigated by color fluorescence angioscopy (CFA). The plaque colors were white, yellow and glistening yellow by conventional angioscopy. (1) OxLDL and LDL exhibited golden fluorescence, whereas LPC and apoB exhibited red fluorescence. (2) By CFA, 16 of 19 greenish-yellow and 1 of 8 yellow plaques exhibited red and golden fluorescence in a mosaic pattern, indicating co-deposition of oxLDL/LDL and LPC/apoB; 3 greenish-yellow and 7 yellow plaques exhibited red fluorescence, indicating solitary deposition of apoB; 23 green plaques infrequently exhibited these fluorescence colors. CONCLUSIONS OxLDL/LDL and LPC/apoB were successfully visualized as co-deposited in greenish-yellow autofluorescence plaques, but only LPC/apoB in yellow autofluorescence plaques.

Abstract:In our HST photometric survey, we have been searching for multiple stellar populations (MPs) in Magellanic Clouds (MCs) massive star clusters which span a significant range of ages ($\sim 1.5-11$ Gyr). In the previous papers of the series, we have shown that the age of the cluster represents one of the key factors in shaping the origin of the chemical anomalies. Here we present the analysis of four additional clusters in the MCs, namely Lindsay 38, Lindsay 113, NGC 2121 and NGC 2155, for which we recently obtained new UV HST observations. These clusters are more massive than $\sim 10^4M_{\odot}$ and have ages between $\sim 2.5-6$ Gyr, i.e. located in a previously unexplored region of the cluster age/mass diagram. We found chemical anomalies, in the form of N spreads, in three out of four clusters in the sample, namely in NGC 2121, NGC 2155 and Lindsay 113. By combining data from our survey and HST photometry for 3 additional clusters in the Milky Way (namely 47 Tuc, M15 and NGC 2419), we show that the extent of the MPs in the form of N spread is a strong function of age, with older clusters having larger N spreads with respect to the younger ones. Hence, we confirm that cluster age plays a significant role in the onset of MPs.

What Does the Large Magellanic Cloud Look Like? It Depends on [M/H] and Age

Abstract:We offer a new way to look at the Large Magellanic Cloud through stellar mono-abundance and mono-age-mono-abundance maps. These maps are based on $\gtrsim 500\,000$ member stars with photo-spectroscopic [M/H] and age estimates from Gaia DR3 data, and they are the first area-complete, metallicity- and age-differentiated stellar maps of any disk galaxy. Azimuthally averaged, these maps reveal a surprisingly simple picture of the Milky Way's largest satellite galaxy. For any [M/H] below -0.1 dex, the LMC's radial profile is well described by a simple exponential, but with a scale length that steadily shrinks towards higher metallicities, from nearly 2.3~kpc at [M/H]$=-1.8$ to only 0.75~kpc at [M/H]$=-0.25$. The prominence of the bar decreases dramatically with [M/H], making it barely discernible at [M/H]$\lesssim -1.5$. Yet, even for metal-rich populations, the bar has little impact on the azimuthally averaged profile of the mono-abundance components. Including ages, we find that the scale length is a greater function of age than of metallicity, with younger populations far more centrally concentrated. At old ages, the scale length decreases with increasing metallicity; at young ages, the scale-length is independent of metallicity. These findings provide quantitative support for a scenario where the LMC built its stellar structure effectively outside in.

Metallicity distribution functions of the old populations of the Magellanic Clouds from RR Lyrae stars

Abstract:We present the first metallicity distribution functions of the old field populations in the Magellanic Clouds. Our metallicities are based on the Fourier decomposition of Type ab RR Lyrae light curves from the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE-III). On the metallicity scale of Zinn & West; we find a mean metallicity of [Fe/H] = -1.50 +/- 0.24 dex based on 16776 RR Lyrae stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). For the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) we obtain -1.70 +/- 0.27 dex based on 1831 RR Lyrae stars. These uncertainties represent the intrinsic spread in the population rather than the standard deviation of the mean. Our results are in good agreement with the few existing spectroscopic metallicity determinations for LMC RR Lyrae stars from the literature. For both the LMC and the SMC the metallicity spread exceeds 1 dex in [Fe/H]. The distribution of metallicities in both Clouds is very uniform, and no significant metallicity gradient is detectable. We also do not find any pronounced populations of extremely metal-poor RR Lyrae candidates with metallicities well below -2 dex, although we need to caution that the photometric method used may overestimate the metallicities of metal-deficient stars. Moreover, because of stellar evolutionary effects one does not expect to observe many RR Lyrae stars among very metal-poor horizontal branch stars. We suggest that the Magellanic Clouds experienced fairly rapid and efficient early enrichment involving pre-enriched gas as well as possibly gas infall, while metal loss through outflows does not seem to have played a significant role. Moreover we suggest that the differences in the metallicities of the old population of LMC and SMC make an origin from a single, common progenitor unlikely, unless the separation happened very early on.

Educational inequalities in smoking cessation trends in Italy, 1982–2002

Abstract:Background/aim: Smoking prevalence rates are declining in most industrialised countries, partly because of growing cessation rates. However, little is known on recent time-trends in smoking cessation by socioeconomic position. This study aims to estimate educational inequalities in smoking cessation trends in Italy between 1982 and 2002. Methods: Data were derived from two national health interview surveys carried out in Italy in 1999–2000 (n = 34 789) and in 2004–2005 (n = 33 135). On the basis of respondents’ age at starting and age at quitting smoking, we computed age-standardised smoking cessation rates at ages 20–44 years for subjects who were current smokers between 1982 and 2002. Results: Smoking quit rates were approximately constant at a figure of about 2 per 100 person-years until the period 2000–2002, when they rapidly increased up to 3–4 per 100 person-years. Higher educated smokers constantly showed higher cessation rates than lower educated subjects (rate ratio 1.33; 95% CI 1.25 to 1.41 for men and 1.41; 95% CI 1.30 to 1.53 for women). The relative size of educational difference in smoking cessation did not significantly vary by period. However, in absolute terms, the increase in cessation rates in 2000–2002 was larger among higher educated smokers. Conclusion: Educational inequalities in smoking cessation persisted in both relative and absolute terms. The increase in smoking cessation rates in 2000–2002 suggests that tobacco control policies may have reached more disadvantaged smokers, although smokers of higher socioeconomic groups seem to have benefited the most.
A new Extended Main Sequence Turnoff star cluster in the Large Magellanic Cloud

Abstract:We present results on the age and metallicity estimates of the poorly studied LMC cluster SL 529, from CCD SDSS gr photometry obtained at the Gemini South telescope with the GMOS attached. The cluster MSTO region possesses an extended structure, with an age spread (~ 0.5 Gyr) bigger than the mean age width of known EMSTO LMC clusters. We report for the first time a mean cluster age of 2.25 Gyr and a mean cluster metallicity of Z=0.004, which place it as the most metal-poor and oldest cluster in the EMSTO LMC cluster group. In addition, the cluster RC appears to be formed by two concentrations of stars - although it is not clear whether this feature can be caused, in part, by binary interactions and mergers -, whereas the cluster core radius of 4.2 pc is in excellent agreement with those determined for the previously 12 known EMSTO LMC clusters.

Abstract:The Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) star cluster NGC 2249 has been found to exhibit an extended main-sequence turn-off (eMSTO) in the color-magnitude diagram (CMD) derived from the data of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). Such CMDs can potentially be explained via a spread of stellar age or rotation rate of single-aged stars, leading to a confusion of its stellar population type. In this work, we use different combinations of age spread (A), rotation (R), and binarity (B) to study the stellar population of this cluster, via a deep HST CMD. Because binaries are commonly observed in star clusters, three models of this study take binaries into account. We finally derive the best-fit stellar population parameters, i.e., metallicity (Z = 0.008), age (0.7–1.0 Gyr), reddening (E(B-I) = 0.52–0.55 mag), distance modulus (18.54–18.57 mag), binary fraction (50%), rotating star fraction (0–50%), and star formation history mode for NGC 2249. We find that both age spread (A + B or A + R + B) and rotating stars (R + B) can reproduce the main CMD features well, while rotation alone does not reproduce the detailed eMSTO morphology. This suggests that an age spread of 200 Myrs is needed to form the eMSTO of cluster NGC 2249, even if stellar rotation is taken into account. Dynamical simulation could be useful for revealing the origin of the eMSTO.
Connection between the Age Distributions of Star Clusters and Field Stars: A First Application to the Small Magellanic Cloud

Abstract:We present the age distributions for star clusters and individual stars in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) based on data from the Magellanic Clouds Photometric Survey by Zaritsky and collaborators. The age distribution of the SMC clusters shows a steep decline, dN_{cluster}/dt \propto t^{-0.85\pm0.15}, over the period 10^7 < t <10^9 yr. This decline is essentially identical to that observed previously for more massive clusters in the merging Antennae galaxies, and also for lower-mass embedded clusters in the solar neighborhood. The SMC cluster age distribution therefore provides additional evidence for the rapid disruption of star clusters (``infant mortality''). These disrupted clusters deliver their stars to the general field population, implying that the field star age distribution, dN_{fld star}/dt, should have an inverse relation to dN_{cluster}/dt if most stars form initially in clusters. We make specific predictions for dN_{fldstar}/dt based on our cluster disruption models, and compare them with current data available for stars in the SMC. While these data do not extend to sufficiently young ages for a definitive test, they are consistent with a scenario wherein most SMC stars formed in clusters. Future analyses of dN_{fldstar}/dt that extend down to ages of approximately few million years are needed to verify the age relationship between stars residing in clusters and in the field.

Abstract:Aims. We present colour–magnitude diagrams (CMDs) of young massive star clusters in several galaxies located well beyond the Local Group. The richness of these clusters allows us to obtain large samples of post-main sequence stars and test how well the observed CMDs are reproduced by canonical stellar isochrones. Methods. We use imaging of seven clusters in the galaxies NGC 1313, NGC 1569, NGC 1705, NGC 5236 and NGC 7793 obtained with the Advanced Camera for Surveys on board the Hubble Space Telescope and carry out PSF-fitting photometry of individual stars in the clusters. The clusters have ages in the range ~(5−50) × 106 years and masses of ~105 M⊙–106 M⊙. Although crowding prevents us from obtaining photometry in the inner regions of the clusters, we are still able to measure up to 30–100 supergiant stars in each of the richest clusters. The resulting CMDs and luminosity functions are compared with photometry of artificially generated clusters, designed to reproduce the photometric errors and completeness as realistically as possible. Results. In agreement with previous studies, our CMDs show no clear gap between the H-burning main sequence and the He-burning supergiant stars, contrary to predictions by common stellar isochrones. In general, the isochrones also fail to match the observed number ratios of red-to-blue supergiant stars, although the difficulty of separating blue supergiants from the main sequence complicates this comparison. In several cases we observe a large spread (1–2 mag) in the luminosities of the supergiant stars that cannot be accounted for by observational errors. We find that this spread can be reproduced by including an age spread of ~(10−30) × 106 years in the models. However, age spreads cannot fully account for the observed morphology of the CMDs and other processes, such as the evolution of interacting binary stars, may also play a role. Conclusions. Colour–magnitude diagrams can be successfully obtained for massive star clusters out to distances of at least 4–5 Mpc. Comparing such CMDs with models based on canonical isochrones we find several areas of disagreement. One interesting possibility is that an age spread of up to ~30 Myr may be present in some clusters. The data presented here may provide useful constraints on models for single and/or binary stellar evolution.

Ages and Metallicities of Extragalactic Globular Clusters from Spectral and Photometric Fits of Stellar Population Synthesis Models

Abstract:Spectra of galaxies contain an enormous amount of information about the relative mixture of ages and metallicities of constituent stars. We present a comprehensive study designed to extract the maximum information from spectra of data quality typical in large galaxy surveys. We test fitting techniques using the Bruzual-Charlot 2003 high resolution simple stellar population synthesis models to simultaneously estimate the ages and metallicities of 101 globular clusters in M31 and the Magellanic Clouds. The clusters cover a wide range of ages and metallicities, 4 Myr to 20 Gyr and -1.6 < [Fe/H] < +0.3, estimated by other methods in the literature. We compare results from model fits to both the spectra and photometry and find that fits to continuum-normalized (CN) spectra over the entire range available, typically 350-1000 nm for this sample, provides the best results. For clusters older than 1 Gyr we agree with literature ages to 0.16 dex (35%) and [Fe/H] to 0.12 dex. For younger clusters we agree with literature ages to 0.3 dex (63%), but cannot constrain the metallicity. It is particularly important to use the entire CN spectrum to avoid problems with model continua for young objects and to break age-metallicity degeneracies of broadband photometry. Our required S/N = 15-30 for 20% age uncertainties and 30-55 for 10% uncertainties over spectral resolutions of 5-25 Angstroms. This technique should work well for the age-metallicity parameter space expected for early-type galaxies at z~1, although individual galaxy spectral S/N may require the coaddition of a few like objects.

Abstract:We use our integrated SDSS photometry for 96 globular clusters in g and z, as well as r and i photometry for a subset of 56 clusters, to derive the integrated colour-metallicity relation (CMR) for Galactic globular clusters. We compare this relation to previous work, including extragalactic clusters, and examine the influence of age, present-day mass function variations, structural parameters and the morphology of the horizontal branch on the relation. Moreover, we scrutinise the scatter introduced by foreground extinction (including differential reddening) and show that the scatter in the colour-metallicity relation can be significantly reduced combining two reddening laws from the literature. In all CMRs we find some low-reddening young GCs that are offset to the CMR. Most of these outliers are associated with the Sagittarius system. Simulations show that this is due less to age than to a different enrichment history. Finally, we introduce colour-metallicity relations based on the infrared Calcium triplet, which are clearly non-linear when compared to (g 0 i 0 ) and (g 0 z 0 ) colours.

Abstract:We leverage new high-quality data from Hubble Space Telescope program GO-14164 to explore the variation in horizontal branch morphology among globular clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Our new observations lead to photometry with a precision commensurate with that available for the Galactic globular cluster population. Our analysis indicates that, once metallicity is accounted for, clusters in the LMC largely share similar horizontal branch morphologies regardless of their location within the system. Furthermore, the LMC clusters possess, on average, slightly redder morphologies than most of the inner halo Galactic population; we find, instead, that their characteristics tend to be more similar to those exhibited by clusters in the outer Galactic halo. Our results are consistent with previous studies showing a correlation between horizontal branch morphology and age.
