Abstract:The note is devoted to an interactive game theoretic formalization of dialogues as psycholinguistic phenomena and the unraveling of a hidden dialogue structure of 2-person differential interactive games. In the field-theoretic description of interactive games the dialogues are defined naively as interactive games of discrete time with intention fields of continuous time; the correct mathematical formulation is proposed. The states and the controls of a dialogue correspond to the speech whereas the intention fields describe the understanding. In the case of dialogues the main inverse problem is to describe geometrical and algebraical properties of the understanding. On the other hand, a precise mathematical definition of dialogues allows to formulate a problem of the unraveling of a hidden dialogue structure of any 2-person differential interactive game. Such procedure is called the verbalization. It means that the states of a differential interactive game are interpreted as intention fields of a hidden dialogue and the problem is to describe such dialogue completely. If a 2-person differential interactive game is verbalizable one is able to consider many linguistic (e.g. the formal grammar of a related hidden dialogue) or psycholinguistic (e.g. the dynamical correlation of various implications) aspects of it.

Abstract:The interactive game theoretical approach to the description of perception processes is proposed. The subject is treated formally in terms of a new class of the verbalizable interactive games which are called the perception games. An application of the previously elaborated formalism of dialogues and verbalizable interactive games to the visual perception allows to combine the linguistic (such as formal grammars), psycholinguistic and (interactive) game theoretical methods for analysis of the image understanding by a human that may be also useful for the elaboration of computer vision systems. By the way the interactive game theoretical aspects of interpretational geometries are clarified.

Abstract:Matthew Baker investigated, in previous work, an elegant, infinite-length game that may be used to study subsets of real numbers. We present two accessible examples of how an important technique from set theory, or a different technique from infinite game theory, may be used to answer Baker's question on whether this game provides a precise characterization for countable subsets of real numbers, and we connect this game to the well-studied Banach-Mazur game from topology.

Abstract:Current methods for solving games embody a form of "procedural rationality" that invites logical analysis in its own right. This paper is a brief case study of Backward Induction for extensive games, replacing earlier static logical definitions by stepwise dynamic ones. We consider a number of analysis from recent years that look different conceptually, and find that they are all mathematically equivalent. This shows how an abstract logical perspective can bring out basic invariant structure in games. We then generalize this to an exploration of fixed-point logics on finite trees that best fit game-theoretic equilibria. We end with some open questions that suggest a broader program for merging current computational logics with notions and results from game theory. This paper is largely a program for opening up an area: an extended version of the technical results will be found in the forthcoming dissertation [26].

Abstract:Games are an arena where all strands of rational agency and interaction come together. In Chapter 10, we showed how extensive games fit well with dynamic logics of knowledge, belief, and preference, adding an account of mid- and long-term agency. In principle, this has made all points about games that are relevant to the main line of this book. For readers who have not had enough of games yet, in this chapter we show how logical dynamics interfaces with game theory, in particular, solution procedures for games in strategic form. Our main tool is iterated public announcement, and our style will be more impressionist.

Abstract:Game-theoretic solution concepts describe sets of strategy profiles that are optimal for all players in some plausible sense. Such sets are often found by recursive algorithms like iterated removal of strictly dominated strategies in strategic games, or backward induction in extensive games. Standard logical analyses of solution sets use assumptions about players in fixed epistemic models for a given game, such as mutual knowledge of rationality. In this paper, we propose a different perspective, analyzing solution algorithms as processes of learning which change game models. Thus, strategic equilibrium gets linked to fixed-points of operations of repeated announcement of suitable epistemic statements. This dynamic stance provides a new look at the current interface of games, logic, and computation.

Abstract:Game theory is the study of decision problems in which there are multiple decision makers and the quality of a decision maker's choice depends on both that choice and the choices of others. While game theory has been studied predominantly as a modeling paradigm in the mathematical social sciences, there is a strong connection to control systems in that a controller can be viewed as a decision-making entity. Accordingly, game theory is relevant in settings with multiple interacting controllers. This article presents an introduction to game theory, followed by a sampling of results in three specific control theory topics where game theory has played a significant role: ( a) zero-sum games, in which the two competing players are a controller and an adversarial environment; ( b) team games, in which several controllers pursue a common goal but have access to different information; and ( c) distributed control, in which both a game and online adaptive rules are designed to enable distributed interacting subsystems to achieve a collective objective.

Abstract:Traditional game theory assumes that the players in the game are aware of the rules of the game. However, in practice, often the players are unaware or have only partial knowledge about the game they are playing. They may also have knowledge that other players have only partial knowledge of the game they are playing, which they can try to exploit. We present a novel mathematical formulation of such games. We make use of Kripke semantics, which are a way to keep track of what different players know and do not know about the world. We propose a notion of equilibrium for such games, and show that equilibrium always exists.

Abstract:Two traditional paradigms are often used to describe the behavior of agents in multi-agent complex systems. In the first one, agents are considered to be fully rational and systems are seen as multi-player games. In the second one, agents are considered to be fully stochastic processes and the system itself is seen as a large stochastic process. From the standpoint of a particular agent - having to choose a strategy, the choice of the paradigm is crucial: the most adequate strategy depends on the assumptions made on the other agents. In this paper, we focus on two-player games and their application to the automated synthesis of reliable controllers for reactive systems - a field at the crossroads between computer science and mathematics. In this setting, the reactive system to control is a player, and its environment is its opponent, usually assumed to be fully antagonistic or fully stochastic. We illustrate several recent developments aiming to breach this narrow taxonomy by providing formal concepts and mathematical frameworks to reason about richer behavioral models. The interest of such models is not limited to reactive system synthesis but extends to other application fields of game theory. The goal of our contribution is to give a high-level presentation of key concepts and applications, aimed at a broad audience. To achieve this goal, we illustrate those rich behavioral models on a classical challenge of the everyday life: planning a journey in an uncertain environment.

Abstract:Dynamical games model interactions between agents that take place in ever-shifting environments. Due to the increasing penetration of autonomous systems to society, understanding and predicting the outcomes of these games has become crucial. In this work, we highlight the importance of nonequilibrium solutions to dynamical games through the lens of bounded rationality. We describe the principles of level-k thinking and cognitive hierarchy – concepts developed in the field of economics – via mathematical tools and formulation of control theory. We describe the main principles of bounded rationality for nonequilibrium differential games in both nonlinear non-zero-sum and linear zero-sum settings. The importance of those approaches is highlighted in problems of pursuit evasion between Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, while the core of the bounded rationality principles that we employ are extended to discrete stochastic dynamical games. The versatility of the proposed approach is complemented by rigorous mathematical guarantees that enable predictability of the games' outcomes.

Abstract:The claim that interactive systems have richer behavior than algorithms is surprisingly easy to prove. Turing machines cannot model interaction machines (which extend Turing machines with interactive input/output) because interaction is not expressible by a finite initial input string. Interaction machines extend the Chomsky hierarchy, are modeled by interaction grammars, and precisely capture fuzzy concepts like open systems and empirical computer science. Computable functions cannot model real-world behavior because functions are too strong an abstraction, sacrificing the ability to model time and other real-world properties to realize formal tractability.Part I of this paper examines extensions to interactive models for algorithms, machines, grammars, and semantics, while Part II considers the expressiveness of different forms of interaction. Interactive identity machines are already more powerful than Turing machines, while noninteractive parallelism and distribution are algorithmic. The extension of Turing to interaction machines parallels that of the lambda to the pi calculus. Asynchronous and nonserializable interaction are shown to be more expressive than sequential interaction (multiple streams are more expressive than a single stream).In Part III, it is shown that interaction machines cannot be described by sound and complete first-order logics (a form of Godel incompleteness), and that incompleteness is inherently necessary to realize greater expressiveness. In the final section the robustness of interactive models in expressing open systems, programming in the large, graphical user interfaces, and agent-oriented artificial intelligence is compared to the robustness of Turing machines. Less technical discussion of these ideas may be found in [25–27]. Applications of interactive models to coordination, objects and components, patterns and frameworks, software engineering, and AI are examined elsewhere [28,29].The propositions P1-P36 embody the principal claims, while observations 01 through 040 provide additional insights.

Stochastic Games for Interactive Manipulation Domains

Abstract:As robots become more prevalent, the complexity of robot-robot, robot-human, and robot-environment interactions increases. In these interactions, a robot needs to consider not only the effects of its own actions, but also the effects of other agents' actions and the possible interactions between agents. Previous works have considered reactive synthesis, where the human/environment is modeled as a deterministic, adversarial agent; as well as probabilistic synthesis, where the human/environment is modeled via a Markov chain. While they provide strong theoretical frameworks, there are still many aspects of human-robot interaction that cannot be fully expressed and many assumptions that must be made in each model. In this work, we propose stochastic games as a general model for human-robot interaction, which subsumes the expressivity of all previous representations. In addition, it allows us to make fewer modeling assumptions and leads to more natural and powerful models of interaction. We introduce the semantics of this abstraction and show how existing tools can be utilized to synthesize strategies to achieve complex tasks with guarantees. Further, we discuss the current computational limitations and improve the scalability by two orders of magnitude by a new way of constructing models for PRISM-games.

Abstract:We analyze the Brandenburger-Keisler paradox in epistemic game theory, which is a `two-person version of Russell's paradox'. Our aim is to understand how it relates to standard one-person arguments, and why the `believes-assumes' modality used in the argument arises. We recast it as a fixpoint result, which can be carried out in any regular category, and show how it can be reduced to a relational form of the one-person diagonal argument due to Lawvere. We give a compositional account, which leads to simple multi-agent generalizations. We also outline a general approach to the construction of assumption complete models.

Abstract:Formal models of games help us account for and predict behavior, leading to more robust and innovative designs. While the games research community has proposed many formalisms for both the "game half" (game models, game description languages) and the "human half" (player modeling) of a game experience, little attention has been paid to the interface between the two, particularly where it concerns the player expressing her intent toward the game. We describe an analytical and computational toolbox based on programming language theory to examine the phenomenon sitting between control schemes and game rules, which we identify as a distinct player intent language for each game.

Abstract:Logic and game theory have had a few decades of contacts by now, with the classical results of epistemic game theory as major high-lights. In this paper, we emphasize a recent new perspective toward “logical dynamics”, designing logical systems that focus on the actions that change information, preference, and other driving forces of agency. We show how this dynamic turn works out for games, drawing on some recent advances in the literature. Our key examples are the long-term dynamics of information exchange, as well as the much-discussed issue of extensive game rationality. Our paper also proposes a new broader interpretation of what is happening here. The combination of logic and game theory provides a fine-grained perspective on information and interaction dynamics, and we are witnessing the birth of something new which is not just logic, nor just game theory, but rather a Theory of Play.

Abstract:Game semantics is a rich and successful class of denotational models for programming languages. Most game models feature a rather intuitive setup, yet surprisingly difficult proofs of such basic results as associativity of composition of strategies. We set out to unify these models into a basic abstract framework for game semantics, game settings. Our main contribution is the generic construction, for any game setting, of a category of games and strategies. Furthermore, we extend the framework to deal with innocence, and prove that innocent strategies form a subcategory. We finally show that our constructions cover many concrete cases, mainly among the early models and the very recent sheaf-based ones.
