Abstract:We report the discovery of strong aperiodic X-ray variability and quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) in the Xray light curves of a new X-ray nova, XTE J1550-564, and the evolution of the observed temporal properties during the rise of the recent X-ray outburst. The power spectral analysis of the first observation reveals strong aperiodic X-ray variability of the source (similar to 28%) as well as the presence of a QPO at similar to 82 mHz with fractional rms amplitude similar to 14% over the 2-60 keV energy range. Also apparent is the first harmonic of the QPO with the amplitude similar to 9%. As the X-ray flux increases, the source tends to become less variable, and the QPO frequency increases rapidly, from 82 mHz to 4 Hz, over the flux (2-50 keV) range of 1.73-5.75 x 10(-8) ergs cm(-2) s(-1). The amplitude of the fundamental component of the QPO varies little, while that of the harmonic follows a decreasing trend. The fundamental component strengthens toward high energies, while its harmonic weakens. Initially, the power spectrum is roughly flat at low frequencies and turns into a power law at high frequencies, with the QPO harmonic sitting roughly at the break. In later observations, however, the high-frequency portion of the continuum can actually be better described by a broken power law (as opposed to a simple power law). This effect becomes more apparent at higher energies. The overall amplitude of the continuum shows a similar energy dependence to that of the fundamental component of the QPO. Strong rapid X-ray variability, as well as a hard energy spectrum, makes XTE J1550-564 a good black hole candidate. We compare its temporal properties with those of other black hole candidates.
Broadband noise and quasi-periodic oscillation characteristics of the X-ray pulsar RX J0440.9+4431

Abstract:Abstract We present a comprehensive timing analysis on the Be/X-ray binary pulsar RX J0440.9+4431 using observations from NICER and Insight-HXMT during the 2022–2023 outburst. The power density spectrum (PDS) of RX J0440.9+4431 exhibits typical aperiodic variability in X-ray flux across a wide frequency range. During a super-critical accretion state, we detect quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) at 0.2–0.5 Hz in the light curves of five pulses for RX J0440.9+4431. The observed QPOs manifest during flares, while the flares appear at the peaks of the pulse profiles on a timescale of seconds and are primarily caused by an increase in hard photons. These flares can be explained by increased material ingestion in the accretion column at a fixed phase, primarily generating hard photons. Alternatively, an increase in accretion rate, independent of phase, may result in highly beamed hard photons within the accretion column, causing the flares. We argue the origin of QPOs to instabilities within the accretion flow. Additionally, we find that the break frequencies in the noise power spectra align well with $\propto L_{\mathrm{x}}^{3 / 7}$ across three orders of magnitude in the luminosity, which points to a relatively strong magnetic field in RX J0440.9+4431, estimated to be ~1013 G.

X-ray Spectral and Timing Properties of the Black Hole Binary XTE J1859+226 and their Relation to Jets

Abstract:We compiled the X-ray and soft gamma-ray observations of the Galactic black hole binary XTE J1859+226 in the 1999--2000 outburst from RXTE, ASCA, BeppoSAX and CGRO. Throughout systematic spectral analysis using a two-component model consisting of a multi-temperature accretion disk plus a fraction of its flux convolved with an empirical Comptonized powerlaw component, we found that the innermost radius ($r_{\rm in}$) and temperature (Tin) of the disk are very variable with time in the rising phase of soft X-ray flux where Type-A/B/C low-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) were found. After this phase, $r_{\rm in}$ remains constant at around 60 km assuming a distance of 8 kpc and an inclination angle of 67$^{\circ}$, and Tin smoothly decays with time. The constant $r_{\rm in}$ suggests a presence of the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO), with $r_{\rm in}$ repeatedly moving closer and farther away from the ISCO in the rising phase. Both disk parameters are remarkably correlated with independently analyzed timing properties such as QPO frequency and rms variability. Type-A/B QPOs are seen only when $r_{\rm in}$ is close to the ISCO, while Type-C are seen when $r_{\rm in}$ is truncated and the frequency changes with a relation of $r^{-1.0}_{\rm in}$, supporting that Type-C QPOs occur at the inner edge of the truncated disk. Accurate determinations of the frequency--$r_{\rm in}$ relation for various objects should be a powerful tool to discriminate plausible Type-C QPO models. Furthermore, we suggest that jet ejection events may occur when $r_{\rm in}$ rapidly approaches to the ISCO, along with rapid changes of the disk flux, the rms variability and the hardness ratio. A rapid shrinkage of $r_{\rm in}$ down to the ISCO can be a useful index as a precursor of radio flares for triggering Target-of-Opportunity observations and would provide constraints on jet launching mechanisms.

Abstract:We report the discovery of quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) at roughly 187 and 150 Hz in the X-ray intensity of X-ray nova XTE J1859+226. The source was observed during a recent outburst with the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer. Besides these high-frequency QPOs, we have also detected QPOs (and sometimes their harmonics) at 6-7 Hz and significant broadband variability at low frequencies. These properties, as well as the observed hard X-ray spectrum, make XTE J1859+226 a black hole candidate (BHC). The detection of QPOs at two distinct frequencies greater, similar100 Hz in two observations separated by about 4 hr provide additional insights into the high-frequency QPO phenomenon in BHCs. The importance lies in the proposed interpretations, which invariably involve the effects of strong gravity near a black hole. We compare our results to those of other BHCs and discuss the impact of the observational data on the models in a global context.

Abstract:We present the results of a timing analysis of the low-frequency quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) in the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer data of the black hole binary XTE J1550-564 during its 1998 outburst. The QPO frequency is observed to vary on timescales between similar to 100 s and days, correlated with the count rate contribution from the optically thick accretion disk: we studied this correlation and discuss its influence on the QPO width. In all observations, the quality factors (nu(0)/FWHM) of the fundamental and second harmonic peaks were observed to be consistent, suggesting that the quasi-periodic nature of the oscillation is due to frequency modulation. In addition to the QPO and its harmonic peaks, a new 1.5 nu component was detected in the power spectra. This component is broad, with a quality factor of similar to 0.6. From this, we argue that the peak observed at half the QPO frequency, usually referred to as "sub-harmonic," could be the fundamental frequency, leading to the sequence 1:2:3:4. We also studied the energy dependence of the timing features and conclude that the two continuum components observed in the power spectrum, although both more intense at high energies, show a different dependence on energy. At low energies, the lowest-frequency component dominates, while at high energies the higher-frequency one has a higher fractional rms. An interplay between these two components was also observed as a function of their characteristic frequency. In this source, the transition between the low/hard state and the hard-intermediate state appears to be a smooth process.
Peculiar Extended X-Ray Emission Around the "Radio-Loud" Black Hole Candidate 1e 1740.7-2942

Abstract:We present the discovery of peculiar extended X-ray emission around 1E 1740.7-2942, a black hole candidate that is known to produce prominent, persistent radio jets. The data were obtained with the High-Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (HETGS) aboard the Chandra X-Ray Observatory. The zeroth-order image reveals an elongated feature about 3'' in length that is roughly perpendicular to the radio lobes (or jets). The feature is roughly symmetric about the point source. It is spatially resolved in the long direction but not in the short direction. Also, the position of 1E 1740.7-2942 was determined with a statistical accuracy of ~0.″06 in the right ascension and ~0.″04 in the declination, thanks to Chandra's unprecedented spatial resolution. It is about 0.″6 from the radio position, but the difference is well within the uncertainty in the absolute aspect solutions of the observation. The dispersed HETGS spectra of 1E 1740.7-2942 show evidence for the presence of weak, narrow emission lines, although the statistics are quite limited. We discuss possible origins of the extended emission and the implications of the emission lines.
Discovery of millihertz Quasi-Periodic Oscillations in the Low Mass X-Ray Binary XTE J1701$-$462 from a Search of the RXTE Legacy data set

Abstract:We report the detection of millihertz quasi-periodic oscillations ($\mathrm{mHz}$ QPOs) from the low-mass X-ray binary XTE J1701$-$462. The discovery came from a search of the legacy data set of the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer, in order to detect the periodic signals in all observations of sources exhibiting thermonuclear bursts. We found that $47$ out of $860$ observations of XTE J1701$-$462; covering the 2006-7 outburst exhibits signals with a significance above the detection threshold, which was determined separately for each observation via a Monte Carlo approach. We chose the four strongest candidates, each with maximum power exceeding $4\sigma$ of the simulated wavelet noise power distribution, to demonstrate the properties of the QPOs. The frequencies of the signals in the four observations are $\sim 3.5\;\text{to}\;5.6\; \mathrm{mHz}$, and the fractional R.M.S. amplitudes vary between $0.74 \pm 0.05\,\%$ and $3.54 \pm 0.04\,\%$. Although previously reported signals in other sources typically disappear immediately before a burst, we do not observe this behaviour in XTE J1701$-$462. Instead, we found that the QPOs and bursts occurred in separate accretion regimes. When the persistent luminosity dropped near the end of the outburst, the source showed bursts and no QPOs were detected, which is the behaviour predicted by theory for the transition from stable to unstable burning. On the basis of this new detection, we reassess the cases for identifying these $\mathrm{mHz}$ QPOs in this and other sources as arising from marginally stable burning.

Origin of the X-ray Quasi-Periodic Oscillations and Identification of a Transient Ultraluminous X-Ray Source in M82

Abstract:The starburst galaxy M82 contains two ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs), CXOM82 J095550.2+694047 (=X41.4+60) and CXOM82 J095551.1+694045 (=X42.3+59), which are unresolved by XMM-Newton. We revisited the two XMM-Newton observations of M82 and analyzed the surface brightness profiles using the known Chandra source positions. We show that the quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) detected with XMM-Newton originate from X41.4+60, the brightest X-ray source in M82. Correcting for the contributions of the unresolved sources, the QPO at a frequency of 55.8+/-1.3 mHz on 2001 May 06 had a fractional rms amplitude of 32%, and the QPO at 112.9+/-1.3 mHz on 2004 April 21 had an amplitude of 21%. The QPO frequency may possibly be correlated with the source flux, similar to the type C QPOs in XTE 1550-564 and GRS 1915+105, but at luminosities two orders of magnitude higher. X42.3+59, the second brightest source in M82, displayed a strikingly high flux of 1.4E-11 ergs/cm^2/s in the 2-10 keV band on 2001 May 6. A seven-year light curve of X42.3+59 shows extreme variability over a factor of 1000; the source is not detected in several Chandra observations. This transient behavior suggests accretion from an unstable disk. If the companion star is massive, as might be expected in the young stellar environment, then the compact object would likely be an IMBH.

AstroSat View of Transient Low-mass X-ray Binary XTE J1701-462: Spectral and Temporal Evolution along the Z-track

Abstract:AstroSat observed transient neutron star low-mass X-ray binary XTE J1701-462 for a total duration of 135 ks during its 2022 outburst. The source traced a complete 'Z' shaped structure in the hardness intensity diagram (HID) during the observation. The source exhibited an extended horizontal branch and a short-dipping flaring branch in the HID. We find that most suitable spectral model comprises emission from a standard multi-color accretion disk and Comptonized radiation from a hot central corona. The observed disk component is cool having temperature in the range of 0.3-0.4 keV and truncated far ( ~100 - 520 km) from the compact object. The Compton corona has optical depth in the range of 3.3-5 and temperature in the range of 3.3-4.9 keV. The disk and corona flux as well as truncation radius varies significantly along the HID. We discuss the possible scenarios to explain the relationship between spectral evolution and motion of the source along the HID. The timing analysis revealed horizontal branch oscillations (HBOs) in the frequency range 34-60 Hz. The frequency and rms strength of HBO vary systematically as the source moves along the horizontal branch (HB). The observed correlation of HBO properties with the position on the HB is similar to that reported previously in this source using \textit{RXTE} data during the 2006 outburst of the source. The source also showed NBOs with frequency $\sim$ 6.7 Hz in the middle and lower normal branch. The energy dependent study of the HBO properties suggests that the HBO is stronger in the higher energy band. We also observed very-low frequency noise (VLFN) and band limited noise (BLN) components in the power-density spectra. The break frequency of BLN component was found to be tightly correlated with the HBO frequency. We discuss possible models to explain the origin and nature of the observed features in the PDS.

Abstract:Millihertz quasi-periodic oscillations (mHz QPOs) observed in neutron-star low-mass X-ray binaries (NS LMXBs) are generally explained as marginally stable thermonuclear burning on the neutron star surface. We report the discovery of mHz QPOs in an XMM-Newton observation of the transient 1RXS J180408.9$-$342058, during a regular bursting phase of its 2015 outburst. We found significant periodic signals in the March observation, with frequencies in the range $5-8\,\mathrm{mHz}$, superimposed on a strong $\sim1/f$ power-law noise continuum. Neither the QPO signals nor the power-law noise were present during the April observation, which exhibited a $2.5\times$ higher luminosity and had correspondingly more frequent bursts. When present, the QPO signal power decreases during bursts and disappears afterwards, similar to the behaviour in other sources. 1RXS J180408.9$-$342058 is the eighth source known to date that exhibits such QPOs driven by thermonuclear burning. We examine the range of properties of the QPO signals in different sources. Whereas the observed oscillation profile is similar to that predicted by numerical models, the amplitudes are significantly higher, challenging their explanation as originating from marginally stable burning.

Abstract:We report the quasi-simultaneous INTEGRAL, SWIFT, and NuSTAR observations showing spectral state transitions in the neutron star low mass X-ray binary 1RXS J180408.9-342058 during its 2015 outburst. We present results of the analysis of high-quality broad energy band (0.8-200 keV) data in three different spectral states: high/soft, low/very-hard, and transitional state. The broad band spectra can be described in general as the sum of thermal Comptonization and reflection due to illumination of an optically-thick accretion disc. During the high/soft state, blackbody emission is generated from the accretion disc and the surface of the neutron star. This emission, measured at a temperature of kTbb ~1.2 keV, is then Comptonized by a thick corona with an electron temperature of ~2.5 keV. For the transitional and low/very-hard state, the spectra are successfully explained with emission from a double Comptonizing corona. The first component is described by thermal Comptonization of seed disc/neutron-star photons (kTbb ~1.2 keV) by a cold corona cloud with kT e ~8-10 keV, while the second one originates from lower temperature blackbody photons (kTbb~0.1 keV) Comptonized by a hot corona (kTe~35 keV). Finally, from NuSTAR observations, there is evidence that the source is a new clocked burster. The average time between two successive X-ray bursts corresponds to ~7.9 ks and ~4.0 ks when the persistent emission decreases by a factor ~2, moving from very hard to transitional state. The accretion rate and the decay time of the X-ray bursts longer than ~30 s suggest that the thermonuclear emission is due to mixed H/He burning triggered by thermally unstable He ignition.

High-Frequency Quasi-Periodic Oscillations in black-hole binaries

Abstract:We present the results of the analysis of a large database of X-ray observations of 22 galactic black-hole transients with the Rossi X-Ray timing explorer throughout its operative life for a total exposure time of ~12 Ms. We excluded persistent systems and the peculiar source GRS 1915+105, as well as the most recently discovered sources. The semi-automatic homogeneous analysis was aimed at the detection of high-frequency (100-1000 Hz) quasi-periodic oscillations (QPO), of which several cases were previously reported in the literature. After taking into account the number of independent trials, we obtained 11 detections from two sources only: XTE J1550-564 and GRO J1655-40. For the former, the detected frequencies are clustered around 180 Hz and 280 Hz, as previously found. For the latter, the previously-reported dichotomy 300-450 Hz is found to be less sharp. We discuss our results in comparison with kHz QPO in neutron-star X-ray binaries and the prospects for future timing X-ray missions.

Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays from Cosmological Relics

Abstract:The current status of origin of Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECR) is reviewed, with emphasis given to elementary particle solutions to UHECR problem, namely to Topological Defects and Super-Heavy Dark Matter (SHDM) particles. The relic superheavy particles are very efficiently produced at inflation. Being protected by gauge discrete symmetries, they can be long lived. They are clustering in the Galactic halo, producing thus UHECR without Greisen-Zatsepin-Kuzmin cutoff. Topological Defects can naturally produce particles with energies as observed and much higher, but in most cases fail to produce the observed fluxes. Cosmic necklaces, monopoles connected by strings and vortons are identified as most plausible sources. The latter two of them are also clustering in the halo and their observational predictions are identical to those of SHDM particles.

Abstract:XTE J1908+094 is an X-ray transient that went into outburst in February 2002. After two months it reached a 2-250 keV peak flux of 1 to 2 X 10-8 erg/s/cm2. Circumstantial evidence points to an accreting galactic black hole as the origin of the the X-radiation: pulsations nor thermonuclear flashes were detected that would identify a neutron star and the spectrum was unusually hard for a neutron star at the outburst onset. We report on BeppoSAX and RXTE All Sky Monitor observations of the broad-band spectrum of XTE J1908+094. The spectrum is consistent with a model consisting of a Comptonization component by a ~40 keV plasma (between 2 and 60 keV this component can be approximated by a power law with a photon index of 1.9 to 2.1), a multicolor accretion disk blackbody component with a temperature just below 1 keV and a broad emission line at about 6 keV. The spectrum is heavily absorbed by cold interstellar matter with an equivalent hydrogen column density of 2.5 X 10+22 cm-2, which makes it difficult to study the black body component in detail. The black body component exhibits strong evolution about 6 weeks into the outburst. Two weeks later this is followed by a swift decay of the power law component. The broadness of the 6 keV feature may be due to relativistic broadening or Compton scattering of a narrow Fe-K line.

Abstract:We report on X-ray (NICER/NuSTAR/MAXI/Swift) and radio (MeerKAT) timing and spectroscopic analysis from a 3 month monitoring campaign in 2022 of a high-intensity outburst of the dipping neutron star low-mass X-ray binary 1A 1744−361. The 0.5–6.8 keV NICER X-ray hardness–intensity and color–color diagrams of the observations throughout the outburst suggest that 1A 1744−361 spent most of its outburst in an atoll-state, but we show that the source exhibited Z-state-like properties at the peak of the outburst, similar to a small sample of other atoll-state sources. A timing analysis with NICER data revealed several instances of an ≈8 Hz quasiperiodic oscillation (QPO; fractional rms amplitudes of ∼5%) around the peak of the outburst, the first from this source, which we connect to the normal branch QPOs seen in the Z-state. Our observations of 1A 1744−361 are fully consistent with the idea of the mass accretion rate being the main distinguishing parameter between atoll- and Z-states. Radio monitoring data by MeerKAT suggests that the source was at its radio-brightest during the outburst peak, and that the source transitioned from the "island" spectral state to the "banana" state within ∼3 days of the outburst onset, launching transient jet ejecta. The observations present the strongest evidence for radio flaring, including jet ejecta, during the island-to-banana spectral state transition at low accretion rates (atoll-state). The source also exhibited Fe xxv, Fe xxvi Kα, and Kβ X-ray absorption lines, whose origins likely lie in an accretion disk atmosphere.

Abstract:We present an energy-dependent analysis for the type-C quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) observed in the black hole X-ray binary Swift J1727.8-1613 using Insight-HXMT observations. We find that the QPO fractional rms at energies above 40 keV is significantly higher than that below 20 keV. This is the first report of a high energy (HE)-rms excess in the rms spectrum of a black hole X-ray binary. In the high energy band, an extra hard component is observed in additional to the standard thermal Comptonization component at similar energy band. The value of the QPO HE-rms excess is not only correlated with the disk parameters and the photon index of the standard Comptonization component, but also exhibits a moderate positive correlation with the flux of the additional hard spectral component. No features in the QPO phase-lag spectra are seen corresponding to the additional hard component. We propose that the additional hard component in the spectrum may originate from jet emission and the associated QPO HE-rms excess can be explained by the precession of the jet base.

Abstract:We report a 325(-7, +8) day quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) in the X-ray emission of the blazar Mkn 421, based on data obtained with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE). The QPO is seen prominently in the ASM data (at least 15 cycles), due to the fact that it has had near-continuous sampling for more than a decade. The PCA data, where the sampling is not uniform and shows many large gaps, provide supporting evidence at lower significance. This QPO is present in both the Proportional Counter Array (PCA) and All-Sky Monitor (ASM) light curves, however it is far more secure (32 sigma significance) in the ASM data since much of the PCA data are from target-of-opportunity flare observations and thus have substantial gaps. QPOs are an important observable in accretion disks, can be modulated by various orbital timescales, and may be generated by a number of mechanisms. They have been studied extensively in X-ray binaries, and should be present in active galactic nuclei (AGN) if they are governed by a common set of physical principles. In jetted sources, QPOs can probe jet-disk interactions or helical oscillations. This QPO previously has been claimed intermittently in X-ray, radio and gamma-ray data, but the continuous, 15-year extent (1996-2011) of the ASM observations (in which Mkn 421 is the brightest AGN observed) provides a unique window. The QPO appears present for nearly the entire extent of the ASM observations. We explore various physical origins and modulating mechanisms, particularly interpretations of the QPO as a result of disk-jet interactions, either due to an accretion disk limit cycle, jet instabilities or helical motions. Limit-cycle related oscillations would not interact with either Keplerian or Lense-Thirring modulated oscillations, however those associated with jet instabilities or helical motions in the jet would likely be modulated by Lense-Thirring precession.

Abstract:ABSTRACT The quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) detected in the X-ray radiation of black hole X-ray binaries (BHXBs) is thought to originate from dynamical processes in close vicinity of black holes (BHs), and thus carries important physical information therein. Such a feature is extremely rare in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) with supermassive BHs. Here we report on the detection of a possible X-ray QPO signal with a period of 3800 s at a confidence level >99.99% in the narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy (NLS1) 1H 0707–495 in one data set in 0.2–10 keV taken with XMM-Newton. The statistical significance is higher than that of most previously reported QPOs in AGNs. The QPO is highly coherent (quality factor Q = &ngr; / Δ &ngr; ≥ 15 ) ?> with a high rms fractional variability (∼15%). A comprehensive analysis of the optical spectra of this AGN is also performed, yielding a central BH mass of 5.2 × 106 M ⊙ from the broad emission lines based on the scaling relation. The QPO follows the known frequency-BH mass relation closely, which spans from stellar-mass to supermassive BHs. The absence of QPOs in other observations of the object suggests that it is a transient phenomenon. We suggest that the (high-frequency) QPOs tend to occur in highly accreting BH systems, from BHXBs to supermassive BHs. Future precise estimation of the BH mass may be used to infer the BH spin from the QPO frequency.
