Abstract:Understanding phase transitions and pore formation during vapor phase dealloying (VPD) is essential to optimize the microstructure and composition of nanoporous metals for versatile applications. Nevertheless, the underlying atomic mechanisms of phase formation and pore evolution during VPD are unknown. Using a binary γ-CoZn precursor alloy as a prototype system, we found a two-step dealloying process. The microsized porous β-CoZn intermediate phase that formed at the dealloying front facilitated the subsequent growth of completely dealloyed hierarchical nanoporous α-Co with the micropore structure of the intermediate phase. Combining aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy with energy dispersion X-ray spectrometry, we found that the intermediate phase preferentially formed on specific crystal planes of the precursor, and the vacancies generated by sublimation of Zn atoms diffused dominantly on the {110} planes of the precursor close to the intermediate phase. Theoretical calculations indicated that the energy barrier to the diffusion of Zn vacancies on the low-index {110} plane was lower than on other planes. The atomic-scale phase evolution played a key role in the subsequent evolution of the porous structure and provided deep insight into the phase transition during VPD. This insight may provide a new approach to tune the pore structure and composition of nanoporous metals by designing and regulating their intermediate phases.

Crystal Facet Induced Single-Atom Pd/CoxOyon a Tunable Metal-Support Interface for Low Temperature Catalytic Oxidation

Abstract:Atomic dispersed metal sites in single-atom catalysts are highly mobile and easily sintered to form large particles, which deteriorates the catalytic performance severely. Moreover, lack of criterion concerning the role of the metal-support interface prevents more efficient and wide application. Here, a general strategy is reported to synthesize stable single atom catalysts by crafting on a variety of cobalt-based nanoarrays with precisely controlled architectures and compositions. The highly uniform, well-aligned, and densely packed nanoarrays provide abundant oxygen vacancies (17.48%) for trapping Pd single atoms and lead to the creation of 3D configured catalysts, which exhibit very competitive activity toward low temperature CO oxidation (100% conversion at 90 degrees C) and prominent long-term stability (continuous conversion at 60 degrees C for 118 h). Theoretical calculations show that O vacancies at high-index {112} facet of Co(x)O(y)nanocrystallite are preferential sites for trapping single atoms, which guarantee strong interface adhesion of Pd species to cobalt-based support and play a pivotal role in preventing the decrement of activity, even under moisture-rich conditions (approximate to 2% water vapor). The progress presents a promising opportunity for tailoring catalytic properties consistent with the specific demand on target process, beyond a facile design with a tunable metal-support interface.

Abstract:Communication: Carbon-encapsulated cobalt nanoparticles are prepared over a range of temperatures and partial pressures by CVD from cyclohexane on prepared substrates consisting of ground powders Of SiO2 impregnated with Co(NO3)(2) and (NH4)(2)Mo2O7. The encapsulated cobalt nanoparticles are freed from the incorporated SiO2 and molybdenum by treating the deposition product with aqueous hydrofluoric acid. Extracted material is dispersed in ethanol and deposited on a carbon-coated and prior to investigation by high-resolution TEM.

Abstract:Four CoFe‐inserted hierarchical porous carbon captured under different temperatures revealed the evolution of Co/Fe from clusters to single atom states through XANES and EXAFS. The LTEM and hologram in situ monitor the high‐density nano‐vortex dipoles and magnetic domains on 3D network. The bifunctional regulation of fully covered X/Ku bands and superb specific reflection loss of −101.24 dB mg−1 mm−1 are achieved. Atomic‐level structural editing is a promising way for facile synthesis and accurately constructing dielectric/magnetic synergistic attenuated hetero‐units in electromagnetic wave absorbers (EWAs), but it is hard to realize. Herein, utilizing the rapid explosive volume expansion of the CoFe‐bimetallic energetic metallic triazole framework (CoFe@E‐MTF) during the heat treatment, the effective absorption bandwidth and the maximum absorption intensity of a series of atomic CoFe‐inserted hierarchical porous carbon (CoFe@HPC) EWAs can be modified under the diverse synthetic temperature. Under the filler loading of 15 wt%, the fully covered X and Ku bands at 3 and 2.5 mm for CoFe@HPC800 and the superb minimum reflection loss (RLmin) of −53.15 dB and specific reflection loss (SRL) of −101.24 dB mg−1 mm−1 for CoFe@HPC1000 are achieved. More importantly, the single‐atomic chemical bonding among Co─Fe on the nanopores is captured by extended X‐ray absorption fine structure, which reveals the formation mechanism of nanopore‐confined vortical dipoles and magnetic domains. This work heralds the infinite possibilities of atomic editing EWA in the future.

Synthesis of nanocrystalline intermetallic layer by mechanical attrition

Abstract:By means of the technique of surface mechanical attrition treatment, the nanocrystalline (nc) intermetallic compound Co3Fe7 was synthesized in the surface layer of bulk cobalt. It was found that deformation-induced diffusion occurred, leading to the extension of solid solution. A series of phase transformation proceeded with increasing Fe content (atom percent) and followed the route from hcp (less than 4 percent Fe) to fee (4-11 percent Fe) and finally to bcc (> 11% Fe). Nanoscale composition analyses by EDX showed that Fe contents are significantly higher in grain boundaries and triple junctions than in grain interiors. It was turned out to be the conclusion that fast diffusion along grain boundaries dominate in larger grains whereas diffusion along triple junctions in nc intermetallic grains. The alloying on the atomic level was ascribed to deformation-induced intermixing during deformation at high strain rates. The mechanism of intermetallic formation was a result of numerous nucleation events followed by limited growth.

Abstract:Porous carbon fibers (FeCo@C-PCFs) hybrids are fabricated by a two-step process involving the electrospinning followed by heat treatment, in which several steps are involved including the reduction of polyvalent metal ions, the produced alloy nanoparticles are encapsulated into porous carbon substrate, yielding the FeCo-polyacrylonitrile networks (FeCo-PAN) that are formed in situ and function as the building blocks. After altering feeding proportion of Co2+ and Fe3+, the formation of FeCo@C-PCF compounds could be controlled. More importantly, FeCo alloys seem to have higher chemical stability. With different graphitization degrees, FeCo@C-PCF compounds were proven to be outstanding microwave (MW) absorbent including thickness, effective bandwidth, and reflection loss (RL). The maximum RL values reached -56 dB at 1.85 mm and broadest bandwidth was 8.3 GHz.

Abstract:Cobalt core/graphite shell nanostructures anchored on graphene sheets have been prepared by a chemical vapor deposition process. Transmission electron microscope images show that the cobalt nanoparticles (10–30nm) are encapsulated by a graphitic shell with a thickness of ∼3nm. Magnetic measurements reveal that the material has a typical ferromagnetic behavior with a saturation magnetization of 71.7emug−1 at room temperature.

Abstract:The inability to process many covalent organic frameworks (COFs) as thin films plagues their widespread utilization. Herein, a vapor-phase pathway for the bottom-up synthesis of a class of porphyrin-based COFs is presented. This approach allows integrating electrocatalysts made of metal-ion-containing COFs into the electrodes' architectures in a single-step synthesis and deposition. By precisely controlling the metal sites at the atomic level, remarkable electrocatalytic performance is achieved, resulting in unprecedentedly high mass activity values. How the choice of metal atoms, i.e., cobalt and copper, can determine the catalytic activities of POR-COFs is demonstrated. The theoretical data proves that the Cu site is highly active for nitrate conversion to ammonia on the synthesized COFs.
Synthesis of Ultrafine and Highly Dispersed Metal Nanoparticles Confined in a Thioether-Containing Covalent Organic Framework and Their Catalytic Applications

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with well-defined and customizable pore structures are promising templates for the synthesis of nanomaterials with controllable sizes and dispersity. Herein, a thioether-containing COF has been rationally designed and used for the confined growth of ultrafine metal nanoparticles (NPs). Pt or Pd nanoparticles (Pt NPs and Pd NPs) immobilized inside the cavity of the COF material have been successfully prepared at a high loading with a narrow size distribution (1.7 ± 0.2 nm). We found the crystallinity of the COF support and the presence of thioether groups inside the cavities are critical for the size-controlled synthesis of ultrafine NPs. The as-prepared COF-supported ultrafine Pt NPs and Pd NPs show excellent catalytic activity respectively in nitrophenol reduction and Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reaction under mild conditions and low catalyst loading. More importantly, they are highly stable and easily recycled and reused without loss of their catalytic activities. Such COF-supported size-controlled synthesis of nanoparticles will open a new frontier on design and preparation of metal NP@COF composite materials for various potential applications, such as catalysis and development of optical and electronic materials.

Abstract:High/Medium entropy alloys (H/MEAs) represent a new strategy for the design of materials with properties superior to those of conventional alloys. Here, we show a new field of application where the uniform mixtures of multiple principal elements in H/MEAs is utilized to create new type nanoporous alloys by dealloying. By using equiatomic CrCoNi MEAs as a proto-type system, we developed three-dimensional bi-continuous open nanoporous CoCr alloys composed of single-phase solid-solution with equiatomic ratios by liquid-metal dealloying methods. The morphology and size of ligaments and pores could be tailored by controlling dealloying time. Structural evolution of the nanoporous CoCr alloy during dealloying can be well described by surface smoothening and ligament pinch-off mediated coarsening process. This study opens up a new promising pathway for development of new type nanoporous alloys-nanoporous high entropy alloys, which are expected to have unprecedented structural and functional properties due to a unique synergistic combination of nanoporous structure and high-entropy effect.

Abstract:Despite the composition close to glassy forming alloys, face centered cubic (FCC) Co81.8Si9.1B9.1, designed based on Co9B atomic cluster (polyhedral), are synthesized as singlephase ribbons successfully. These ribbons, with grain sizes of ca. 92 nm, show supreme ductility and strong orientation along (111), which couples with shape anisotropy leading to high magnetocrystalline anisotropy comparable to Co rich Co-Pt nanoscale thin films, with a coercivity of 430 Oe and squareness of 0.82 at room temperature. The stability and magnetic behaviors of the phase are discussed based on experimental electronic structure. This work not only develops low cost Co-based materials for hard magnetic applications, but also extends the atomic cluster model developed for amorphous alloys into the design of new crystalline materials.
High-strength hierarchical-structured bulk nanoporous Cu prepared by dealloying and spark plasma sintering

Abstract:The applications of dealloyed nanoporous metals are usually hindered by their slow rate of synthesis, the limited sample dimensions, and the poor mechanical stability due to the presence of native cracks. We report that these obstacles can be overcome by combining dealloying with spark plasma sintering. Centimeter-sized nanoporous Cu samples were prepared by spark plasma sintering of dealloyed nanoporous Cu particles. The obtained bulk nanoporous Cu samples are free of major cracks, and exhibit hierarchical porous structures with structure size of <math>∼</math>250 nm at lower level of hierarchy and relative density varying between 0.29<math>∼</math>0.57. Because of the "size effect" on ligament strength and the elimination of native cracks, these nanoporous Cu samples are stronger than monolithic nanoporous Cu (with cracks) and microporous Cu of similar density. We anticipate that this approach will improve the performance and broaden the application of nanoporous metals, of which the synthesis rate, sample dimensions and microstructure are no longer dependent entirely on dealloying procedure.

Characterization of Magnetic Properties of CoPd Alloy Nanoparticles Synthesized via a Novel Sol-Gel Process

Abstract:The present work improved a novel sol-gel process,and made a successful attempt to prepare CoPd alloy nanoparti-cles by means of this facile one-pot reaction without H2 reduction.The formation of face-centered cubic (fcc)CoPd nanoalloy nano-particles were confirmed by the examinations of X-ray diffraction (XRD)and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM).The analyses show that the grain sizes of the synthesized nanoparticles range from 4 nm to 12 nm with average about 9 nm, and the synthesized nanoparticles exhibit typical superparamagnetic behavior at 300 K along with a blocking temperature at 250 K. This novel silica sol-gel strategy is expected to display potential application in preparing other nanoalloy nanoparticles.

Abstract:Cobalt carbide (Co2C) possesses high catalytic efficiency Fischer‐Tropsch synthesis (FTS) while the products selectivity appears sensitive to crystallography geometry. Since the Anderson–Schulz–Flory (ASF) distribution in FTS was broken through fabricating facetted Co2C nanocrystals, yet the underlying mechanism of Co2C crystallization remains unclarified suffering from sophisticated catalyst composition involving promoter agents. Herein, we report the synthesis of high‐purity single‐crystal nanoprisms (Co2C‐p) for highly efficient FTS to lower olefins. Through comprehensive microstructure analysis, e.g. high‐resolution TEM, in situ TEM and electron diffraction, as well as finite element simulation of gas flow field, for the first time we disclosed the full roadmap of forming catalytic active cobalt carbides, starting from reduction of Co3O4 precursor to CoO intermediate, then carburization into Co2C‐s and subsequent ripening growth into Co2C‐p. This gas‐induced engineering of crystal phase provides a new synthesis strategy, with many new possibilities for precise design of metal‐based catalyst for diverse catalytic applications. Abstract:Powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and neutron powder diffraction (NPD) have been used to investigate the crystal structure of CoFe2O4 nanoparticles prepared via different hydrothermal synthesis routes, with particular attention given to accurately determining the spinel inversion degrees. The study is divided into four parts. In the first part, the investigations focus on the influence of using different diffraction pattern combinations (NPD, Cu-source PXRD and Co-source PXRD) for the structural modelling. It is found that combining PXRD data from a Co source with NPD data offers a robust structural model. The second part of the study evaluates the reproducibility of the employed multipattern Rietveld refinement procedure using different data sets collected on the same sample, as well as on equivalently prepared samples. The refinement procedure gives reproducible results and reveals that the synthesis method is likewise reproducible since only minor differences are noted between the samples. The third part focuses on the structural consequences of (i) the employed heating rate (achieved using three different hydrothermal reactor types) and (ii) changing the cobalt salt in the precursors [aqueous salt solutions of Co(CH3COOH)2, Co(NO3)2 and CoCl2] in the synthesis. It is found that increasing the heating rate causes a change in the crystal structure (unit cell and crystallite sizes) while the Co/Fe occupancy and magnetic parameters remain similar in all cases. Also, changing the type of cobalt salt does not alter the final crystal/magnetic structure of the CoFe2O4 nanoparticles. The last part of this study is a consideration of the chemicals and parameters used in the synthesis of the different samples.

Abstract:3D bicontinuous nanoporous Co@CoO/RuO2 composites with tunable sizes and chemical compositions can be fabricated by introducing vapor phase dealloying (VPD) of cobalt‐based alloys. The composite catalyst delivers an ultralow overpotential of 198 mV at 10 mA cm−2. The precise regulation of the ligament size and interfacial active species provides powerful support for the functionalization of VPD applications. The development of low‐cost and effective oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts to expedite the slow kinetics of water splitting is crucial for increasing the efficiency of energy conversion from electricity to hydrogen fuel. Herein, 3D bicontinuous nanoporous Co@CoO/RuO2 composites with tunable sizes and chemical compositions are fabricated by introducing vapor phase dealloying of cobalt‐based alloys. The influence of physical parameters on the formation of nanoporous Co substrates with various feature ligament sizes is systematically investigated. The CoO/RuO2 shell is constructed by integrating a thin layer of RuO2 on the inner surface of nanoporous Co, where the CoO interlayer is formed by annealing oxidization. The composite catalyst delivers an ultralow overpotential of 198 mV at 10 mA cm−2, Tafel slope of 57.1 mV dec−1, and long‐term stability of 50 h. The superior OER activity and fast reaction kinetics are attributed to charge transfer through the coupling of CoORu bonds at the interface and the excellent nanopore connectivity, while the durability originates from the highly stable CoO/RuO2 interface.
