Abstract:How to use few actuators to endow a multifingered robotic hand with the human grasping and manipulation abilities is a challenging problem. This article develops a design principle of a five-fingered robotic hand with only two actuators, which guarantees the designed hand can replicate a large portion of the grasping and a limited portion of the manipulation abilities of the human hand: simultaneously move all joints before contacting objects like the natural reach-to-grasp process of the human hand; self-adaptively pinchenvelop objects with arbitrary shapes; and carry out dexterous manipulation, such as in-hand manipulation of a ball and screwing bottle cap. The core design ideas involve two levels. The higher level idea is to construct a robotic design theory ensuring thumb and fingers driven independently and four fingers driven synergistically so that the opposable thumb with manual abductionadduction function can move coordinately with four fingers to ensure abundant anthropomorphic grasps and in-hand manipulations. The lower level idea is to establish a mechanism design method that embeds human two primary eigengrasps into a novel single-actuated differential palm mechanism consisting of gears, drag axes, and slider elements, so that the mechanism can always replicate the grasping behaviors of human hand, no matter how the differential processes it would perform during grasping. Finally, we design a mini X-hand to verify our proposed design principle and reproduce 29 types out of 33 grasping types and some manipulations that are commonly used by human hands in daily life.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is how to use a small number of actuators to endow multi - fingered robotic hands with the ability of human grasping and manipulation. Specifically, this paper develops a design principle for a five - fingered robotic hand. This design can achieve most of the grasping functions and some of the manipulation abilities of the human hand with only two actuators. This includes moving all joints simultaneously before contacting an object, adaptively pinching or wrapping objects of any shape, and completing dexterous manipulation tasks, such as manipulating a ball in the hand and unscrewing a bottle cap. The core design concepts of the article are divided into two levels: 1. **High - level concept**: Construct a robotic design theory to ensure that the thumb and fingers can be independently driven, while the four fingers are driven cooperatively. In this way, the opposing thumb with manual abduction / adduction functions can move in coordination with the four fingers to ensure rich anthropomorphic grasping and in - hand manipulation. 2. **Low - level concept**: Establish a mechanism design method to embed two main grasping characteristics of humans into a novel single - actuator differential palm mechanism, which is composed of gears, drag shafts and slider elements, so that no matter how the differential process is carried out during the grasping process, this mechanism can always replicate the grasping behavior of the human hand. Finally, the author designed a Mini - X hand to verify the proposed design principles and successfully reproduced 29 out of 33 types of human grasps commonly used in daily life and some manipulation tasks.
