Abstract:This paper presents the CMB angular power spectrum obtained using the \texttt{CAMB} code for three different models of inflation: the Starobinsky inflationary model, the generalized Starobinsky inflationary model, and the chaotic inflationary model with a step. The results are compared with the most recent data reported for the Planck mission. An analysis of the large ($\ell \lesssim 90$), intermediate ($90 \lesssim \ell \lesssim 900$), and small ($\ell \gtrsim 900 $) angular scales is performed. We report the position of the peaks in the intermediate region so as the cosmological parameters obtained in each of the models: age of the universe, $\Omega_m$, $\Omega_b$, $\Omega_{\Lambda}$, $\Omega_K$ and $n_\sca$. We also perform a Bayesian analysis using the \texttt{Cobaya} code to evaluate our three best-fitting models. Additionally, we generated contour plots $(n_\sca,r)$ for our inflationary models, taking into account the number of e-folds between the end of inflation and the completion of reheating.

Abstract:Inflation as the leading paradigm depicting the very early universe physics could leave imprints on the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation. Using currently available CMB observations, we give the tightest constraints on inflation so far. We discuss the theoretical implications of our results including the energy scale of inflation, inflaton field excursion, Hubble expansion rate during inflation, equation of state of inflation, primordial tensor non-Gaussianity, primordial tensor power spectrum, B-mode anisotropy and inflationary gravitational wave background.

Abstract:The simplest single-field inflation models capture all the relevant contributions to the patterns in the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) observed today. A key assumption in these models is that the quantum inflationary fluctuations that source such patterns are generated by a particular quantum state -- the Bunch-Davies (BD) state. While this is a well-motivated choice from a theoretical perspective, the question arises of whether current data can rule out other, also well motivated, choices of states. In particular, as we previously demonstrated in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2104.13410" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2104.13410">arXiv:2104.13410</a> [hep-th], entanglement is naturally and inevitably dynamically generated during inflation given the presence of a "rolling" spectator scalar field -- and the resulting entangled state will yield a primordial power spectrum with potentially measurable deviations compared to the canonical BD result. For this work we developed a perturbative framework to allow a systematic exploration of constraints on (or detection of) entangled states with Planck CMB data using Monte Carlo techniques. We have found that most entangled states accessible with our framework are consistent with the data. One would have to expand the framework to allow a greater variety of entangled states in order to saturate the Planck constraints and more systematically explore any preferences the data may have among the different possibilities.

Predictions of the Quantum Landscape Multiverse

Abstract:The 2015 Planck data release has placed tight constraints on the class of in ationary models allowed. The current best fit region favors concave downwards in ationary potentials, since they produce a suppressed tensor to scalar index ratio r. Concave downward potentials have a negative curvature V"<0, therefore a tachyonic mass square that drives fluctuations. Furthermore, their use can become problematic if the field rolls in a part of the potential away from the extrema, since the semiclassical approximation of quantum cosmology, used for deriving the most probable wavefunction of the universe from the landscape and for addressing the quantum to classical transition, breaks down away from the steepest descent region. We here propose a way of dealing with such potentials by inverting the metric signature and solving for the wavefunction of the universe in the Euclidean sector. This method allows us to extend our theory of the origin of the universe from a quantum multiverse, to a more general class of concave inflationary potentials where a straightforward application of the semiclassical approximation fails. The work here completes the derivation of modifications to the Newtonian potential and to the inflationary potential, which originate from the quantum entanglement of our universe with all others in the quantum landscape multiverse, leading to predictions of observational signatures for both types of in ationary models, concave and convex potentials.

Testing Inflation with the Cosmic Background Radiation

Abstract:In inflation cosmologies, cosmic structure develops through the gravitational instability of the inevitable quantum noise in primordial scalar fields. I show how the acceleration of the universe defines the shape of the primordial spectrum of gravitational metric and scalar field fluctuations. I assess how we can determine the shape and overall amplitude over the five decades or so of spatial wavelengths we can probe, and use current data ... to show how far we are in this program. Broad-band power amplitudes are given for CMB anisotropy detections up to spring 1994 ... I show that COBE band-powers found with full Bayesian analysis of the $53,90,31$ $a$+$b$ GHz first year DMR (and FIRS) maps are in good agreement, and are essentially independent of spectral slope and degree of (sharp) signal-to-noise filtering. Further, after (smooth) optimal signal-to-noise filtering (\ie Weiner-filtering), the different DMR maps reveal the same large scale features and correlation functions with little dependence upon slope. However, the most probable slope depends upon how the maps are filtered: with no filtering whatsoever, the slope is high, but the power is not described by a single-slope law; as filtering is increased, the index moves nearer to inflation predictions. in {\it Relativistic Cosmology}, ed. A robust explanation of CMB anomalies with a new formulation of inflationary quantum fluctuations

Abstract:The presence of CMB Hemispherical Asymmetry (HPA) challenges the current understanding of inflationary cosmology which does not generically predict the parity violation in the primordial correlations. In this paper, we shall review the recently proposed resolution to this based on a new formulation of quantizing inflationary fluctuations by focusing on the discrete spacetime transformations in a gravitational context. The predictive power of this formulation is that one can generate a scale dependent HPA in the context of single field inflation for all the primordial modes including scalar and tensor fluctuations without introducing any additional parameters. This result can be seen as an indication of spontaneous breaking of $\mathcal{C}\mathcal{P}\mathcal{T}$ symmetry in an expanding Universe, if confirmed by future observations it would be a great leap in the subject of quantum field theory in curved spacetime.

Tensor Fluctuations in the Early Universe

Abstract:In standard inflationary cosmology, scalar and tensor perturbations grew as the Universe expanded and froze when their wavelengths exceeded the Hubble horizon, producing a tell-tale signature in the fluctuation spectrum and amplitude of the cosmic microwave background (CMB). But there are now very good reasons to examine whether structure formation could also have begun via the seeding of quantum fluctuations in a non-inflationary field. In this Letter, we study and compare the scalar and tensor modes produced in these two scenarios, and demonstrate that upcoming observations to measure the B-mode polarization of the CMB may be able to differentiate between them. Whereas both scalar and tensor modes should be observable if the field was inflationary, only scalar modes would be present in the CMB if it were not. Should gravity be purely classical, however, the tensor modes would have avoided canonical quantization in all cases, resulting in unmeasurably weak gravitational waves. A non-detection of B-mode polarization would thus not completely rule out inflation.

CMB Angular Power Spectrum from Correlated Primordial Fluctuation

Abstract:The usual inflationary scenario predicts a Gaussian random primordial density fluctuation, different Fourier modes of which do not correlate with each other. In this paper we propose a correlation between these different modes. A simple case is that these different Fourier modes correlate with each other following a Gaussian function. For such a primordial density fluctuation we calculate the CMB angular power spectrum and find that its amplitude decreases but the decrease is different for different $l$. This feature can be used to constrain the the correlation strength from the real data.

Abstract:While the standard, six-parameter, spatially flat Λ CDM model has been highly successful, certain anomalies in the cosmic microwave background bring out a tension between this model and observations. The statistical significance of any one anomaly is small. However, taken together, the presence of two or more of them imply that according to standard inflationary theories we live in quite an exceptional Universe. We revisit the analysis of the PLANCK collaboration using loop quantum cosmology, where an unforeseen interplay between the ultraviolet and the infrared makes the primordial power spectrum scale dependent at very small k . Consequently, we are led to a somewhat different ΛCDM Universe in which anomalies associated with large scale power suppression and the lensing amplitude are both alleviated. The analysis also leads to new predictions for future observations. This article is addressed both to cosmology and loop quantum gravity communities, and we have attempted to make it self-contained.

Abstract:The capability of Cosmic Inflation to explain the latest Cosmic Microwave Background and Baryonic Acoustic Oscillation data is assessed by performing Bayesian model comparison within the landscape of nearly three-hundred models of single-field slow-roll inflation. We present the first Bayesian data analysis based on the third-order slow-roll primordial power spectra. In particular, the fourth Hubble-flow function $\epsilon_4$ remains unbounded while the third function verifies, at two-sigma, $\epsilon_{3}\in[-0.4,0.5]$, which is perfectly compatible with the slow-roll predictions for the running of the spectral index. We also observe some residual excess of $B$-modes within the BICEP/Keck data favoring, at a non-statistically significant level, non-vanishing primordial tensor modes: $\log(\epsilon_{1}) > -3.9$, at $68\%$ confidence level. Then, for 283 models of single-field inflation, we compute the Bayesian evidence, the Bayesian dimensionality and the marginalized posteriors of all the models' parameters, including the ones associated with the reheating era. The average information gain on the reheating parameter $R_\mathrm{reh}$ reaches $1.3 \pm 0.18$ bits, which is more than a factor two improvement compared to the first Planck data release. As such, inflationary model predictions cannot meet data accuracy without specifying, or marginalizing over, the reheating kinematics. We also find that more than $40\%$ of the scenarios are now strongly disfavored, which shows that the constraining power of cosmological data is winning against the increase of the number of proposed models. In addition, about $20\%$ of all models have evidences within the most probable region and are all favored according to the Jeffreys' scale of Bayesian evidences.

Spectral distortions from promising single and multifield inflationary models

Abstract:Forthcoming missions probing the absolute intensity of the CMB are expected to be able to measure spectral distortions, which are deviations from its blackbody distribution. As cosmic inflation can induce spectral distortions, these experiments offer a possibility to further test the various promising inflationary proposals, whose predictions need to be carefully determined. After numerically fitting all inflationary observables to match current observations, we compute the predicted spectral distortions of various promising single and multifield inflationary models. The predictions of single-field inflationary models display deviations between 0.5% and 20% with respect to the standard cosmological model in the observable window, where multi-natural and axion-monodromy inflation stand out in this respect. In the case of multifield inflation, we observe a richer structure of the power spectrum, which, in the case of so-called hybrid attractors, yields spectral distortions about 100 times more intense than the standard signal. These observations open up questions about the relation among our results and other cosmological observables that are also to be probed soon, such as the production of primordial black holes and gravitational waves.

The future of cosmology? A case for CMB spectral distortions

Abstract:This thesis treats the topic of CMB Spectral Distortions (SDs), which represent any deviation from a pure black body shape of the CMB energy spectrum. As such, they can be used to probe the inflationary, expansion and thermal evolution of the universe both within $\Lambda$CDM and beyond it. The currently missing observation of this rich probe of the universe makes of it an ideal target for future observational campaigns. In fact, while the $\Lambda$CDM signal guarantees a discovery, the sensitivity to a wide variety of new physics opens the door to an enormous uncharted territory. In light of these considerations, the thesis opens by reviewing the topic of CMB SDs in a pedagogical and illustrative fashion, aimed at waking the interest of the broader community. This introductory premise sets the stage for the first main contribution of the thesis to the field of SDs: their implementation in the Boltzmann solver CLASS and the parameter inference code MontePython. The CLASS+MontePython pipeline is publicly available, fast, it includes all sources of SDs within $\Lambda$CDM and many others beyond that, and allows to consistently account for any observational setup. By means of these numerical tools, the second main contribution of the thesis consists in showcasing the versatility and competitiveness of SDs for several cosmological models as well as for a number of different mission designs. Among others, the results cover features in the primordial power spectrum, primordial gravitational waves, non-standard dark matter properties, primordial black holes, primordial magnetic fields and Hubble tension. Finally, the manuscript is disseminated with (20) follow-up ideas that naturally extend the work carried out so far, highlighting how rich of unexplored possibilities the field of CMB SDs still is. The hope is that these suggestions will become a propeller for further interesting developments.

Testing Inflation and Curvaton Scenarios with CMB Distortions

Abstract:Prior to recombination, Silk damping causes the dissipation of energy from acoustic waves into the monopole of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), resulting in spectral distortions. These can be used to probe the primordial scalar power spectrum on smaller scales than it is possible with CMB anisotropies. An enhancement of power on these scales is nevertheless required for the resulting distortions to be detectable by future experiments like PIXIE. In this paper, we examine all 49 single-field inflation models listed by Martin et al. in the Encyclopaedia Inflationaris [1] and find that only one of these may lead to a detectable level of distortions in a tuned region of its parameter space, namely the original hybrid model. Three effective multi-field scenarios are also studied: with softly and suddenly turning trajectories, and with a mild waterfall trajectory. Softly turning trajectories do not induce distortions at any detectable level, whereas a sudden turn in the field space or a mild waterfall trajectory predicts a peak (plus damped oscillations in the sudden turn case) in the scalar power spectrum, which can lead to an observable amount of CMB distortions. Finally, another scenario leading to potentially detectable distortions involves a curvaton whose blue spectrum is subdominant on CMB angular scales and overtakes the inflaton spectrum on smaller scales. In this case however, we show that the bounds from ultra compact minihaloes are not satisfied. Expectations for an ultimate PRISM-class experiment characterized by an improvement in sensitivity by a factor of ten are discussed for some models.

Abstract:Boomerang, Maxima, DASI, CBI and VSA significantly increase the case for accelerated expansion in the early universe (the inflationary paradigm) and at the current epoch (dark energy dominance), especially when combined with data on high redshift supernovae (SN1) and large scale structure (LSS). There are ``7 pillars of Inflation'' that can be shown with the CMB probe, and at least 5, and possibly 6, of these have already been demonstrated in the CMB data: (1) a large scale gravitational potential; (2) acoustic peaks/dips; (3) damping due to shear viscosity; (4) a Gaussian (maximally random) distribution; (5) secondary anisotropies; (6) polarization. A 7th pillar, anisotropies induced by gravity wave quantum noise, could be too small. A minimal inflation parameter set, \omega_b,\omega_{cdm}, \Omega_{tot}, \Omega_Q,w_Q,n_s,\tau_C, \sigma_8}, is used to illustrate the power of the current data. We find the CMB+LSS+SN1 data give \Omega_{tot} =1.00^{+.07}_{-.03}, consistent with (non-baroque) inflation theory. Restricting to \Omega_{tot}=1, we find a nearly scale invariant spectrum, n_s =0.97^{+.08}_{-.05}. The CDM density, \Omega_{cdm}{\rm h}^2 =.12^{+.01}_{-.01}, and baryon density, \Omega_b {\rm h}^2 = >.022^{+.003}_{-.002}, are in the expected range. (The Big Bang nucleosynthesis estimate is 0.019\pm 0.002.) Substantial dark (unclustered) energy is inferred, \Omega_Q \approx 0.68 \pm 0.05, and CMB+LSS \Omega_Q values are compatible with the independent SN1 estimates. The dark energy equation of state, crudely parameterized by a quintessence-field pressure-to-density ratio w_Q, is not well determined by CMB+LSS (w_Q < -0.4 at 95% CL), but when combined with SN1 the resulting w_Q < -0.7 limit is quite consistent with the w_Q=-1 cosmological constant case.
Revising the observable consequences of slow-roll inflation

Abstract:We study the generation of primordial perturbations in a (single-field) slow-roll inflationary universe. In momentum space, these (Gaussian) perturbations are characterized by a zero mean and a non-zero variance $\Delta^2(k, t)$. However, in position space the variance diverges in the ultraviolet. The requirement of a finite variance in position space forces one to regularize $\Delta^2(k, t)$. This can (and should) be achieved by proper renormalization in an expanding universe in a unique way. This affects the predicted scalar and tensorial power spectra (evaluated when the modes acquire classical properties) for wavelengths that today are at observable scales. As a consequence, the imprint of slow-roll inflation on the CMB anisotropies is significantly altered. We find a non-trivial change in the consistency condition that relates the tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$ to the spectral indices. For instance, an exact scale-invariant tensorial power spectrum, $n_t=0$, is now compatible with a non-zero ratio $r\approx 0.12\pm0.06$, which is forbidden by the standard prediction ($r=-8n_t$). The influence of relic gravitational waves on the CMB may soon come within the range of planned measurements, offering a non-trivial test of the new predictions.

Challenges to Inflation in the Post-Planck Era

Abstract:Space-based missions studying the cosmic microwave background (CMB) have progressively refined the parameter space in conventional models of inflation shortly (∼10 −37 s) after the Big Bang. While most inflationary scenarios proposed thus far in the context of general relativity have since been ruled out, the basic idea of inflation may still be tenable, albeit with several unresolved conundrums, such as conflicting initial conditions and inconsistencies with the measured CMB power spectrum. In the new slow-roll inflationary picture, inflation arising in plateau-like potentials requires an initiation beyond the Planck time. This delay may be consistent with the cutoff, k min , measured recently in the primordial power spectrum. However, the actual value of k min would imply an initiation time too far beyond the Big Bang for inflation to solve the horizon problem. In this paper, we also describe several other undesirable consequences of this delay, including an absence of well-motivated initial conditions and a significant difficulty in providing a viable mechanism for properly quantizing the primordial fluctuations. Nevertheless, many of these inconsistencies may still be avoided if one introduces nonconventional modifications to inflation, such as a brief departure from slow-roll dynamics, possibly due to a dramatic change in the inflationary potential, inflation driven by multiple fields, or a nonminimal coupling to gravity. In addition, some of these difficulties could be mitigated via the use of alternative cosmologies based, e.g., on loop quantum gravity, which replaces the initial Big Bang singularity with finite conditions at a bounce-like beginning.

Predictions in eternal inflation

Abstract:In generic models of cosmological inflation, quantum fluctuations strongly influence the spacetime metric and produce infinitely many regions where the end of inflation (reheating) is delayed until arbitrarily late times. The geometry of the resulting spacetime is highly inhomogeneous on scales of many Hubble sizes. The recently developed string-theoretic picture of the "landscape" presents a similar structure, where an infinite number of de Sitter, flat, and anti-de Sitter universes are nucleated via quantum tunneling. Since observers on the Earth have no information about their location within the eternally inflating universe, the main question in this context is to obtain statistical predictions for quantities observed at a random location. I describe the problems arising within this statistical framework, such as the need for a volume cutoff and the dependence of cutoff schemes on time slicing and on the initial conditions. After reviewing different approaches and mathematical techniques developed in the past two decades for studying these issues, I discuss the existing proposals for extracting predictions and give examples of their applications.

The quantum fluctuations can selfdecay in the inflationary expansion through processes forbidden in Minkowski. We compute the self-decay of the inflaton quantum fluctuations during slow roll:superhorizon fluctuations decay as eta^{Gamma} in conformal time where the new scaling dimension Gamma is expressed in terms of the amplitude, n_s and r. we discuss the implications for scalar and tensor perturbations as well as for non gaussianities.

Observational imprints from Loop Quantum Cosmology

Abstract:The standard model of cosmology assumes a homogeneous and isotropic universe that undergoes a period of exponential expansion very early on, named inflation. This stretches quantum fluctuations from the onset of inflation to cosmological scales, which seed the temperature, polarization and matter anisotropies that we observe. However, this paradigm ignores pre-inflationary physics, as shortly before inflation there is the initial big-bang singularity. Loop Quantum Cosmology (LQC) is a promising approach to quantum cosmology. Its most outstanding result is that of the resolution of the classical initial singularity in terms of a quantum bounce that connects a contracting branch of the Universe with an expanding one. Consequently, it provides singularity-free pre-inflationary dynamics. Within this context, it is no longer justified to consider that every mode of the cosmological perturbations reaches the onset of inflation in the natural vacuum state of standard cosmology. In fact, some modes might reach it in an excited state, which may leave imprints in their power spectra at the end of inflation and therefore in observations of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). The goal of this thesis is to search for such imprints from LQC in the CMB. We work in the hybrid approach to cosmological perturbations in LQC.

Abstract:Inflation drives quantum fluctuations beyond the Hubble horizon, freezing them out before the small-scale modes re-enter during the radiation dominated epoch, and subsequently decay, while large-scale modes re-enter later during the matter dominated epoch and grow. This distinction shapes the matter power spectrum and provides observational evidence in support of the standard model. In this paper, we demonstrate that another mechanism, based on the fluctuation growth in the R_h=ct universe, itself an FLRW cosmology with the added constraint of zero active mass (i.e., rho+3p=0), also accounts very well for the observed matter power spectrum, so this feature is not unique to LambdaCDM. In R_h=ct, the shape of the matter power spectrum is set by the interplay between the more rapid decay of the gravitational potential for the smaller mode wavelengths and the longer dynamical timescale for the larger wavelengths. This combination produces a characteristic peak that grows in both amplitude and mode number as a function of time. Today, that peak lies at k approx 0.02 Mpc^-1, in agreement with the Ly-alpha and Planck data. But there is no need of an inflationary expansion, and a complicated epoch dependence as one finds in LambdaCDM.
