Abstract:We describe an operationally simple transition-metal-free borylation of alkyl iodides. This method uses commercially available diboron reagents as the boron source and exhibits excellent functional group compatibility. Furthermore, a diverse range of primary and secondary alkyl iodides could be effectively transformed to the corresponding alkylboronates in excellent yield. Mechanistic investigations suggest that this borylation reaction proceeds through a single-electron transfer mechanism featuring the generation of an alkyl radical intermediate.

Abstract:The traditional method for the preparation of alkylboronic esters involves transition metal catalysis or transition metal-free methods relying on single electron transfer. Each method relies on the suitable choice of catalyst or electron transfer mediator. In this study, we have developed a new method for the synthesis of alkylboronic esters from alkyl chlorides and diboron(4) compounds, without the need for additional metal or non-metal catalysts. We discovered that under 400 nm visible light irradiation, alkyl chlorides can be activated in the presence of bis(neopentyl glycolato)diboron and an alkoxide base to form alkyl radical intermediates, which then react with diboron(4) compounds, resulting in high yields of alkylboronic esters. The reaction is applicable to both primary and secondary alkyl chlorides. The simplicity of operation and the broad substrate scope of this method make it practical for the synthesis of valuable alkylboronic ester intermediates. Under 400 nm visible light irradiation, primary and secondary alkyl chlorides can be activated in the presence of bis(neopentyl glycolato)diboron and an tert-butoxide to form alkyl radicals, which then react with diboron(4) compounds to afford alkylboronic esters. Abstract:An efficient aluminum-catalyzed selective hydroboration of alkenes and alkynylsilanes is reported. A wide variety of alkenes and alkynylsilanes bearing various functional groups and heterocyclic substituents were converted to boronic ester products in good yields with high selectivity. Mechanistically, density functional theory calculations favored a mechanism involving the insertion of the double bond into the Al–H species followed by C–Al/B–H metathesis.

Abstract:Herein, we report the first electrochemical strategy for the borylation of aryl iodides via a radical pathway using current as a driving force. A mild reaction condition allows an assorted range of readily available aryl iodides to be proficiently converted into synthetically valuable arylboronic esters under transition metal catalyst-free conditions. Moreover, this method also shows good functional group tolerance. Initial control mechanistic experiments reveal the formation of aryl radical as a key intermediate and the current plays an important role in the generation of radical intermediate.

Abstract:In this work, selectivity-controllable base-promoted transition-metal-free borylation and dehalogenation of aryl halides are described. Under the conditions of borylation, the dehalogenation which emerges as a competitive side reaction has been well-controlled by carefully controlling the borylation conditions. On the other hand, the dehalogenation using benzaldehyde as a hydrogen source has also been accomplished. The applications of direct radical borylation and dehalogenation of aryl halides demonstrate their synthetic practicability in pharmaceutical-oriented organic synthesis. Based on the experimental evidences, the (BuOK)-Bu-t/1,10-Phen-triggered radical nature of both competitive reactions has been revealed.

Abstract:α-Halo alkylboronic esters are versatile reagents in chemical synthesis. These reagents are typically prepared by the homologation of boronic esters with a dihaloalkyl lithium species. However, the need to form anionic boron intermediates limits the scope of α-haloboronates. Herein, we present a method for the catalytic radical halosulfonation of vinylboronates to a variety of α-halo alkylboronic esters using iron powder as catalyst. This protocol features functional group tolerance, wide substrate scope, gram-scale synthesis, and operational simplicity under air conditions. Moreover, the resulting products can be smoothly derivatized to various value-added molecules. The combined mechanistic investigations and density functional theory calculations suggest that Fe(I)-halogen species generated from the in situ reaction plays a key role to drive the catalytic cycle and also acts as an actual halogen-transferring donor.

Abstract:A transition-metal-free method for the synthesis of gem-silylboronate esters with arylboronic acids and trimethylsilyldiazomethane (TMSCHN2) has been developed. This transformation is a straightforward homologation of arylboronic acids and features wide substrate scope and good functional-group tolerance. The gem-silylboronate esters undergo efficient Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling with aryliodides and the silyl group of the product can be further functionalized. Tertiary carbon centers with different substituents can be constructed successfully by selective and sequential functionalization.

Abstract:We report herein that supported gold catalysts efficiently promote the borylation of stable C(sp3)-O bonds of alkyl esters. The use of a disilane as an electron source and gold nanoparticles as a single-electron transfer catalyst is the key to generating alkyl radicals via the homolysis of stable C(sp3)-O bonds, thereby enabling cross-coupling between bis(pinacolato)diboron and linear and cyclic alkyl esters to afford the diverse alkyl boronates.

There are only few examples to achieve this goal by using ultraviolet irradiation. Abstract:Organoboron reagents are important synthetic intermediates that have a key role in the construction of natural products, pharmaceuticals and organic materials1. The discovery of simpler, milder and more efficient approaches to organoborons can open additional routes to diverse substances2-5. Here we show a general method for the directed C-H borylation of arenes and heteroarenes without the use of metal catalysts. C7- and C4-borylated indoles are produced by a mild approach that is compatible with a broad range of functional groups. The mechanism, which is established by density functional theory calculations, involves BBr3 acting as both a reagent and a catalyst. The potential utility of this strategy is highlighted by the downstream transformation of the formed boron species into natural products and drug scaffolds.

Abstract:An efficient metal-free ortho C-H borylation has been developed via sequential borylation of substituted 2-phenoxypyridines with BBr3 following esterification with pinacol. The corresponding aryl boronates were obtained in good yields. The synthesized aryl boronates can be easily transformed into various useful products. Therefore, the present method makes functionalizations of aryl C-H bonds easy.

Abstract:Herein, a four-coordinated organoboron compound, aminoquinoline diarylboron (AQDAB), is utilized as the photocatalyst in the oxidation of silane to silanol. This strategy effectively oxidizes Si–H bonds, affording Si–O bonds. Generally, the corresponding silanols can be obtained in moderate to good yields at room temperature under oxygen atmospheres, representing a green protocol to complement the existing preparation methods for silanols.

Abstract:The construction of C(sp 3 )–C(sp 3 ) bonds is pivotal in organic synthesis; however, traditional methods involving alkyl halides are often limited by substrate tolerance and bond dissociation energies, particularly with alkyl fluorides. Herein, we report a silylboronate-mediated cross-coupling strategy that circumvents these challenges, enabling the efficient formation of C(sp 3 )–C(sp 3 ) bonds between alkyl fluorides and aryl alkanes under mild conditions. Various alkyl fluorides have also been effectively utilized, demonstrating the versatility and broad applicability of this approach. The use of diglyme is critical for this transformation which encapsulates potassium cations and enhances the reaction efficiency. Conventional alkyl halides, including chlorides, bromides, and iodides, are also suitable for this transformation. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were conducted on the silylboronate-mediated coupling reactions for the first time. Interestingly, while experimental results suggest a radical mechanism, DFT calculations indicate a preference for an ionic pathway.

Abstract:Methods to efficiently synthesize organosilanes are valuable in the fields of synthetic chemistry and materials science. During the past decades, boron conversion has become a generic and powerful approach for constructing carbon‒carbon and other carbon-heteroatom bonds, but its potential application in forming carbon‒silicon remains unexplored. Herein, we describe an alkoxide base-promoted deborylative silylation of benzylic organoboronates, geminal bis(boronates) or alkyltriboronates, allowing for straightforward access to synthetically valuable organosilanes. This selective deborylative methodology exhibits operational simplicity, broad substrate scope, excellent functional group compatibility and convenient scalability, providing an effective and complementary platform for the generation of diversified benzyl silanes and silylboronates. Detailed experimental results and calculated studies revealed an unusual mechanistic feature of this C−Si bond formation.

Abstract:A photocatalyzed 1,3-boron shift of allylboronic esters is reported. The boron atom migration through the allylic carbon skeleton proceeds via consecutive 1,2-boron migrations and Smiles-type rearrangement to furnish a variety of terminally functionalized alkyl boronates. Several types of migrating variations of heteronuclei radicals and dearomatization processes are also tolerated, allowing for further elaboration of highly functionalized boron-containing frameworks.

Abstract:Palladium- and nickel-catalyzed cross-coupling recations of unactivated alkyl bromides with diboron reagents have been developed as practical methods for the synthesis of primary and secondary alkylboronic esters. These reactions extend the concept and utility of Pd- and Ni-catalyzed cross-coupling of aliphatic electrophiles. They also show different substrate selectivity and ligand dependence as compared to the recently reported Cu-catalyzed borylation reaction.

Abstract:Herein, we present an electrochemical desulfurative protocol for the formation of alkyl boronic esters from thioethers. The paired electrolytic transformation utilizes HBpin as coupling partner and proceeds with inert electrodes. The transformation features mild conditions, broad substrate scope and excellent functional group tolerance, as illustrated by late-stage functionalization of pharmaceutical compounds and natural products. Furthermore, the protocol is scalable, successfully producing gram quantities of borylated product.

Abstract:A simple, general and efficient method is developed for the metal-free iodination of arylboronic acids. The protocol uses very cheap molecular iodine as the halide source and potassium carbonate as the base. The method is highly tolerant of various functional groups present in the substrates. Importantly, the iodination strategy can also be applied very effectively in the one-pot, two-step synthesis of biaryl derivatives.
