Abstract:A particle-resolved study of a collision system composed of heavy particles and light particles in a homogeneous isotropic turbulence has been performed. Direct numerical simulations (DNS) of this system were conducted using lattice Boltzmann method (LBM). The effects of hydrodynamics on the collision particles were accounted by directly resolving the flow around finite-size particles with an interpolated bounce-back scheme. A large-scale stochastic forcing scheme was implemented within the mesoscopic multiple-relaxation-time LBM approach to maintain turbulence intensity at targeted levels. Both kinematic and dynamic collision kernels were evaluated to study the correlation of total collision events and turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) dissipation rate. The results show that collisions between particles increase with the increase of TKE dissipation rate as radial relative velocities between particles increase with it. It is found that the dynamic collision kernels do not match with the kinematic collision kernels which is derived from point-particle method. Quantitatively, they were approximately 4 to 10 times smaller than the corresponding dynamic collision kernels. Therefore, it is not reasonable to estimate the kinematic collision kernel in particle-resolved simulations as its rationales are not valid. However, the collision behavior can still be accounted for by means of the dynamic collision kernel since it is obtained from the direct statistical analysis of the collision events.
Effect of Long-Range Coulomb Repulsion on Adhesive Particle Agglomeration in Homogeneous Isotropic Turbulence

Abstract:We conduct numerical investigations on the early-stage agglomeration of identically charged microparticles in homogeneous isotropic turbulence. The turbulent flow field is evolved by direct numerical simulation, and the adhesive discrete element method is employed to simulate particle transport and agglomerate formation. Through extensive simulations, the effect of Coulomb repulsion on collision frequency is examined. As the particle charge increases, the collision kernel, when plotted as a function of the Stokes number St, is found to change from the increasing trend to the decreasing trend. From decomposition analysis, it turns out that this monotonicity inversion is caused by the shifting of the dominant collision mechanism from preferential concentration to the sling effect. Besides, once particles contact with each other, the sticking probability is shown to solely depend on the dimensionless adhesion parameter, Ad(n), revealing the major role of interparticle adhesion in the collision process. When the effects of Coulomb repulsion and adhesion both exist, particles with moderate collision velocities are more likely to contribute to the formation of agglomerates. The structure of the agglomerates is then measured using the fractal dimension. It is found that, due to its isotropic feature, Coulomb repulsion effectively reduces the agglomeration rate but has a negligible effect on the structure of agglomerates.

Abstract:The breakage of an agglomerate of wet flexible fibers impacting a plane is computationally investigated in this work using the discrete element method. In the agglomerate, the fibers stick together due to cohesive liquid bridge forces. Agglomerate breakage with various impact conditions, initial configurations, fiber properties, and liquid bridge properties is systematically investigated. The degree of breakage is governed by the impact energy, the cohesion energy due to liquid bridges, the energy dissipation/absorption through fiber-fiber contacts and fiber deformation, and the efficiency of force transmission within the agglomerate. More specifically, breakage is promoted by increasing impact velocity, decreasing agglomerate size, increasing initial compaction, increasing fiber bending modulus, decreasing liquid surface tension, and decreasing liquid-to-solid volume ratio. Breakage is strongly dependent on the modified Weber number, that is, the ratio of the Weber number to a dimensionless rupture distance, which is a measure of the impact energy relative to the cohesion energy.

Abstract:The collision rate between primary nanoparticles in the turbulent flow is of significance for accurately predicting the growth rate of agglomerates during the flame synthesis process. In this work, the clustering and the collision of Brownian particles in the free-molecular regime in homogeneous isotropic turbulence are investigated using the direct numerical simulation and the Langevin dynamics. It is found that the Brownian motion can distribute the particles more uniformly, leading to the formation of a plateau on the curve of the radial distribution function (RDF). This anti-clustering effect is significant only at a small separation distance of particle pairs and cannot be observed when the separation is larger than a critical value. The radial relative velocity (RRV) is significantly enhanced, especially at the small separation distance, when the Brownian motion is taken into account. A velocity superposition analysis shows that the statistics of RRV of Brownian particles can be obtained by adding a random variable onto the RRV of non-Brownian particles with the same Stokes number. The increased radial relative velocity counteracts the anti-clustering effect of the Brownian motion and leads to the increase of the geometric collision kernel. Finally, the collision kernel of Brownian particles is formulated as a function of asymptotic values of RDF and RRV at a vanishing separation. The proposed collision kernel enables us to estimate the collision rate between nanoparticles that are much smaller than the Kolmogorov length scale.

Abstract:We make use of discrete-element-method numerical simulations of inelastic frictionless cylinders in simple shearing at different length-to-diameter ratios and solid volume fractions to analyze the rate of collisional dissipation of the fluctuation kinetic energy. We show that the nonspherical geometry of the particles is responsible, by inducing rotation, for increasing the dissipation rate of the fluctuation kinetic energy with respect to that for frictionless spheres. We also suggest that the partial alignment of the cylinders induced by shearing concurs with the particle inelasticity in generating correlation in the velocity fluctuations and thus affecting the collisional dissipation rate as the solid volume fraction increases. Finally, we propose simple phenomenological modifications to the expression of the collisional dissipation rate of kinetic theory of granular gases to take into account our findings.

Abstract:We perform adhesive discrete-element method (DEM) calculations to investigate the structural evolution and the breakage of dense agglomerates in a shear flow and a Taylor-Green vortex. By means of adhesive DEM, all possible modes of particle contacting interactions are resolved and the free-draining approximation is employed to calculate the hydrodynamic drag. We demonstrate that, for shear flows, dense agglomerates undergo significant restructuring before breakage. The normal force between contacting particles scales in a linear way as the shear rate increases. Based on extensive simulation results, a criterion for breakage is then proposed, which is valid across a wide range of shear stress and interparticle adhesion values. The average size of fragments at the quasi-steady state after the breakage follows a power function of a particle adhesion parameter. By defining an effective shear rate, we are able to extend the findings in simple shear flows to the breakage process in the vortex.

Abstract:The breakup of inertial, solid aggregates in an incompressible, homogeneous and isotropic three-dimensional turbulent flow is studied by means of a direct numerical simulation, and by a Lagrangian tracking of the aggregates at varying Stokes number and fluid-to-particle density ratio. Within the point-particle approximation of the Maxey-Riley-Gatignol equations of motion, we analyse the statistics of the time series of shear and drag stresses, which are here both deemed as responsible for particle breakup. We observe that, regardless of the Stokes number, the shear stresses produced by the turbulent velocity gradients similarly impact the breakup statistics of inertial and neutrally buoyant aggregates, and dictate the breakup rate of loose aggregates. When the density ratio is different from unity, drag stresses become dominant and are seen to be able to cause to breakup of also the most resistant aggregates. The present work paves the way for including the role of inertia in population balance models addressing particle breakup in turbulent flows.

Abstract:The effect of particle-particle collision in decaying homogeneous and isotropic turbulence in the absence of gravity is studied using direct numerical simulation. The objective is to verify the relative importance of the particle-particle collision effect on particle distribution and other characteristics in gas-solid flows with transition from dilute to dense flow. A pseudospectral method coupling with a discrete element method (a hard-sphere approach) is used to simulate the gas turbulence and particle-particle collision dynamics. The effects of particle-particle collisions with different Stokes numbers and mass loadings are investigated. Suggestions for the consideration of the particle-particle collision effect in transition from dilute to dense gas-particle flow are provided. An empirical criterion for demarcation of dilute and dense flow is established. A selective effect of particle-particle collision on particle distribution with particle Stokes numbers higher and lower than unity is found and qualitatively demonstrated.

Abstract:This paper describes computer simulations of pendular state wet agglomerates undergoing pair-wise collisions. The simulation method is based upon a ‘soft’ discrete particle formulation. Each agglomerate comprised 1000 primary particles with the interparticle interactions modelled as the combination of the solid–solid contact forces and also the forces developed at discrete liquid bridges between neighbouring particles. For the range of collisional velocities implemented, the agglomerates invariably coalesced. The energy dissipated was associated primarily with the viscous resistance of the fluid and the interparticle friction rather than by liquid bridge bond rupture. The structure of the resultant coalesced agglomerate was highly disordered and depended on the impact velocity. As the impact velocity approached zero, the agglomerates behaved like two rigid bodies bonded together. When the impact velocity was increased, the size of the circumscribing sphere of the coalesced agglomerate decreased and reached a minimum value at a critical velocity above which an increase in the circumscribing sphere size occurred due to extensive flattening. An increase in the viscosity of the interstitial fluid resulted in an increase in the proportion of energy dissipated by viscous resistance and a decrease in the proportion dissipated due to interparticle friction. An increase in the fluid viscosity also resulted in an increase in the critical impact velocity at which the size of the circumscribing sphere of the coalesced agglomerate was a minimum.

Abstract:Nano- and submicron particles typically exist in the form of agglomerates. The shear flow, a common local flow, plays an important role in the breakage and restructuring of agglomerates. In this work, the discrete element method (DEM) with a cohesive contact model is used to simulate the dynamic evolution of agglomerates under shear flow. The results show that the size and structure of agglomerates at a steady state are the results of competition among the shear gradient of the flow field, the surface energy and the initial structure of the agglomerates. Based on the variation of the radius of gyration (Rg) and fractal dimension (Df) of agglomerates with time, the following three stages can be distinguished: (a) a stage dominated by stretch and breakage, (b) a stage dominated by agglomeration and densification, and (c) a stage characterized by the steady size and structure of agglomerates. With increasing shear gradient, the agglomerate fragments at the steady stage become smaller, more compact and more uniform. When the shear gradient is high, increasing the surface energy can result in larger fragments with a more compact structure. However, when the shear gradient is low, increasing the surface energy does not lead to larger fragments. The effect of initial structure on the stable size and structure of fragments disappears gradually with the increase in shear gradient. The detailed simulation results can improve the understanding and control of the size and structure of agglomerates in practical devices.

Abstract:Discrete Element Method simulations of Homogeneous Cooling Systems (HCS) are used to develop a collisional dissipation rate model for non-spherical particle systems that can be incorporated in a two-fluid multiphase flow framework. Two types of frictionless, elongated particle models are compared in the HCS simulations: glued-sphere and true cylinder. Simulation results show that the ratio of translational to rotational granular temperatures is equal to one for the true cylindrical particles with particle aspect ratios (AR) greater than one and glued-sphere particles with AR >1.5, while the temperature ratio is less than one for glued-sphere particles with 1< AR <1.5. The total collisional dissipation rate, which is associated with both translational and rotational granular temperature change rates, increases linearly with the particle aspect ratio. Thus, a collisional dissipation rate model for the elongated cylinders is developed by a simple modification of the existing spherical particle model. Abstract:<p>Individual wet particle collisions can significantly affect the macroscale behaviors of granular flow systems. The collision process between two wet particles consists of deformation and non-deformation stages. In each stage, a force model is required to describe the interactive mechanics. Forces vary in a fashion that the energy dissipates during the entire collision process, which further impacts the particle coalescence. In this study, the force model and energy dissipation mechanism at each collision stage are investigated. For the deformation stage, combined effects of adhesion and plastic deformation at the contact surface are considered. For the non-deformation stage, combined effects of capillary and viscous force are studied. Based on energy conservation, the particle coalescence criterion is characterized into three distinct types. The developed explicit expression for the contact force, restitution coefficient, and corresponding coalescence criteria can be further applied in modelling of wet granular flow systems.</p>

Abstract:By characterising the hydrodynamic stresses generated by statistically homogeneous and isotropic turbulence in rigid aggregates, we estimate theoretically the rate of turbulent breakup of colloidal aggregates and the size distribution of the formed fragments. The adopted method combines Direct Numerical Simulation of the turbulent field with a Discrete Element Method based on Stokesian dynamics. In this way, not only the mechanics of the aggregate is modelled in detail, but the internal stresses are evaluated while the aggregate is moving in the turbulent flow. We examine doublets and cluster-cluster isostatic aggregates, where the failure of a single contact leads to the rupture of the aggregate and breakup occurs when the tensile force at a contact exceeds the cohesive strength of the bond. Due to the different role of the internal stresses, the functional relationship between breakup frequency and turbulence dissipation rate is very different in the two cases. In the limit of very small and very large values, the frequency of breakup scales exponentially with the turbulence dissipation rate for doublets, while it follows a power law for cluster-cluster aggregates. For the case of large isostatic aggregates it is confirmed that the proper scaling length for maximum stress and breakup is the radius of gyration. The cumulative fragment distribution function is nearly independent of the mean turbulence dissipation rate and can be approximated by the sum of a small erosive component and a term that is quadratic with respect to fragment size.

Collision fragmentation of aggregates. The role of the interaction potential between comprising particles

Abstract:We investigate disruptive collisions of aggregates comprised of particles with different interaction potentials. We study Lennard-Jones (L-J), Tersoff, modified L-J potential and the one associated with Johnson-Kendall-Roberts (JKR) model. These refer to short, middle and long-ranged inter-particle potentials and describe both inter-atomic interactions and interactions of macroscopic adhesive bodies. We perform comprehensive molecular dynamics simulations and observe for all four potentials power-law dependencies for the size distribution of collision fragments and for their size-velocity correlation. We introduce a new fragmentation characteristic -- the shattering degree $S$, quantifying the fraction of monomers in debris and reveal its universal behavior. Namely, we demonstrate that for all potentials, $1-S$ is described by a universal function of the impact velocity. Using the above results, we perform the impact classification and construct the respective collision phase diagram. Finally, we present a qualitative theory that explains the observed scaling behavior.

Abstract:We carry out direct numerical simulation together with an adhesive discrete element method calculation (DNS-DEM) to investigate agglomeration of particles in homogeneous isotropic turbulence (HIT). We report an exponential-form scaling for the size distribution of early-stage agglomerates, which is valid across a wide range of particle inertia and interparticle adhesion values. Such scaling allows one to quantify the state of agglomeration using a single scale parameter. An agglomeration kernel is then constructed containing the information of agglomerate structures and the sticking probability. An explicit relationship between the sticking probability and microscale particle properties is also proposed based on the scaling analysis of the equation for head-on collisions. Our results extend Smoluchowski's theory to the condition of noncoalescing solid adhesive particles and can reproduce DNS-DEM results with a simple one-dimensional simulation. Abstract:Molecular dynamics simulations are used to study central collisions between spherical grains and between grains and small grain aggregates (up to 5 grains). For a model material (Lennard-Jones), grain–grain collisions are sticking when the relative velocity v is smaller than the so-called bouncing velocity and bouncing for higher velocities. We find a similar behavior for grain–aggregate collisions. The value of the bouncing velocity depends only negligibly on the aggregate size. However, it is by 35% larger than the separation velocity needed to break a contact; this is explained by energy dissipation processes during the collision. The separation velocity follows the predictions of the macroscopic Johnson–Kendall–Roberts theory of contacts. At even higher collision velocities, the aggregate is destroyed, first by the loss of a monomer grain and then by total disruption. In contrast to theoretical considerations, we do not find a proportionality of the collision energy needed for destruction and the number of bonds to be broken. Our study thus sheds novel light on the foundations of granular mechanics, namely the energy needed to separate two grains, the difference between grain–grain and grain–aggregate collisions, and the energy needed for aggregate destruction.

Abstract:A numerical investigation of the effect of particle breakage on the one-dimensional compression behavior of a realistic granular assembly was carried out using the discrete-element method. The morphologies of sands were obtained using X-ray microcomputed tomography. Sand assemblies were generated in terms of the statistical distribution of sphericity from real sands. The results of single-particle compression tests showed that particle shape significantly affects crushing strength. Particle breakage had a significant influence on compressive deformation, as demonstrated by comparing breakable assemblies with unbreakable ones. The strong force distribution became broader, and the proportion of weak force increased with particle breakability. Looser samples underwent much more particle breakage than did denser samples. It was found that breakage dissipation was a small fraction of energy input compared with frictional dissipation. An excellent hyperbolic relationship between relative breakage and energy input was found, which was independent of initial void ratio.

Abstract:In this paper, the prototypical process of the normal impact of dense agglomerates is investigated using the discrete element method-boundary element method coupled simulations. The agglomerate consists of 50 charged particles with the surface energy equal to 10mJ/m^{2}. The particles are assumed to be tribocharged and follow an exponential charge distribution, while the varying levels of coupled polarization are also considered. Simulation results reveal that the presence of the electrostatic interactions due to particle charging and polarization could drive more pronounced re-agglomeration after the collision, which effectively reduces the degree of agglomerate fragmentation. Moreover, when quantifying the collision outcomes using the fragmentation ratio, the influence of the electrostatic force is most significant at a moderate incident velocity. This is because, at such incident velocities, the impact is violent enough to break the agglomerate, but many ejected fragments are usually at low velocities and are attracted back by the long-range electrostatic force. Furthermore, the electrostatic force between same-sign particles even becomes attractive when particles are strongly polarized, leading to qualitative changes in particle dynamics. Finally, by comparing the collision outcomes under different incident velocities, the contact interactions are found to prevail when particles are still bounded in the agglomerate, while the electrostatic interaction becomes dominant after particles detach from each other.
Two-Way Coupling Model for Fractal-Like Agglomerate-Laden Multiphase Flow

Abstract:The disturbing of ultrafine particles on carrying phase is usually ignored in studies on dilute ultrafine particle systems. In a dense fractal-like agglomerate system, however, the effect of particle phase on carrier phase should be considered due to its unique heat and mass transfer while the corresponding mathematical model for this problem has not been established. By taking the agglomerate-laden suspension as a single pseudo fluid, we propose a two-way coupling model in which the developed governing equations for suspension and particle general dynamic equation (PGDE) for particle coagulation and breakage due to turbulence are simultaneously solved. The Taylor-expansion moment method has been applied to solve fractal-like aggregate process and dilute gas-to-particle conversion, and in this study it is further extended to close the PGDE equation by invoking fractal theory. The newly coupling model is not limited in dilute particle system, and thus it is expected to play important roles in studying dense fractal-like agglomerate synthesis or other particulate industrial applications.
