Abstract:Sensing technology is the key of intelligent packaging. A variety of different sensing systems for indicating freshness through intelligent packaging have been presented. Polyaniline (PANI) can change its color reversibly through the acid-base reaction with reactive compounds and has been widely used in different kinds of sensors. However, because PANI is insoluble in common organic solvents, this limits its practical usage in many applications. In this work, a highly stable polyaniline-poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PANI:PSS) colloid has been developed as a facile colorimetric sensor of volatile amines. The results showed the PANI:PSS colloid is quite sensitive to changes in pH. When PANI:PSS colloids were homogenously deposited on filter paper, the paper are used as a sensor to detect triethylamine (TEA) vapor. The green color of the test paper changed to blue at a TEA concentration as low as 188 ppm.

Abstract:The design of a flexible pH sensor with high sensitivity, excellent stability, and low cost has great potential in the applications of the medical care and health fields. In this study, a high-performance flexible pH sensor with a two-electrode configuration was fabricated. This flexible pH sensor integrated the three-dimensional polyaniline (3D PANI) working electrode and Ag/AgCl reference electrode for monitoring the pH value of sweat in real-time. Polyaniline with phytic acid as dopant and crosslinker with a three-dimensional porous matrix structure pro-vided a larger contact area for hydrogen ions in solution and a wider transmission path for charges, which improves the pH response performance of the 3D PANI sensor. The results demonstrated that the 3D PANI sensor exhibited linear super-Nernstian behavior (69.33 mV/pH) in the physiological range (pH 4.00 similar to 9.00) of sweat, excellent performances in terms of response time (7.75 s), reversibility (3.80 mV), repeatability (0.44 % RSD), drift rate (0.10 mV/h), and temperature drift (0.06 mV/pH/degrees C). Particularly, the 3D PANI sensor in the bending state showed identical performances to the unbent condition, which makes it a promising candidate in the field of in-situ real-time sweat pH sensors for wearable electronics.

Abstract:Harmless and breathable flexible humidity sensor has important applications in continuous and real-time detection of human physiological activities. In this work, with hydrophobic poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membrane as both the template and substrate and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide as a structure regulator, polyaniline (PANI) was unilaterally deposited on a PVDF microporous membrane to facilely fabricate a single-sided integrated flexible humidity sensor (IFHS). Such IFHS is featured with unique micro/nano structure and good air permeability. Moreover, it exhibits good humidity sensing properties at room temperature including fast response, small hysteresis and stable response even under bending deformation. The flexible sensor could realize non-contact monitoring of human respiration and speaking activities. Unilateral deposition of PANI and good breathability of IFHS avoids direct contact between PANI and human skin, thus averting harms to human and minimizing the deterioration of humidity sensing properties of PANI layer. The simple method is universal to the preparation of single-sided, integrated, breathable, nontoxic and fast response wearable humidity sensors based on PANI and hydrophobic microporous polymer membranes, offering useful references for the construction of advanced flexible sensors.

Abstract:The combination of conductive material and flexible material is an unavoidable problem in the preparation of flexible sensor, but uniform combination of the materials in micro- or nanostructure is difficult. Coaxial electrospinning is an effective way to realize the combination, which is very strict for the solutions and the synthesis conditions. In this paper, composite pH-sensitive sensors were developed by coaxial electrospinning of polyaniline (PANI) and polyurethane (PU) into core–shell fibers. PU improved the mechanical properties of the sensors. The mechanical properties and conductivity of the sensor can be changed through adjusting the proportion of PANI and PU. By chronopotentiometry in buffer solutions, the sensor worked linearly in the pH range of 2–7 with the sensitivity of − 60 mV/pH and pH change below 0.2 can be detected. It was also proved that the sensor can resist the influence from the changes in temperature, detection time and deformation of the sensor, ensuring the stability in pH detection. Further, by attaching to skin, our sensor showed the response to the pH of small amount of sweat on the skin surface, which suggested the possibility in wearable devices.

Abstract:A flexible dual functional electrochemical sensor based on macroscopic polyaniline (PANI) film is reported. The PANI film is prepared by interfacial synthesis without any additional templates and surfactants, and is easily transferred from the water surface to any substrate. The surface of PANI film is flat and has a certain degree of crystallization. The PANI film exhibits good electrochemical properties, which is attributed to the order structure of PANI. The flexible sensor based on PANI film exhibits good electrochemical performances to pH and lactate. And the flexible PANI sensor has good reproducibility, selectivity and long-term stability. Meanwhile, the PANI sensor is also applied to detect the actual sample (such as food and human sweat), and the results are in accordance with the commercial pH meter, indicating the reliability of the PANI sensor.

Abstract:In recent years, with the rise of an intelligent concept, oral and maxillofacial surgery smart dressing had also attracted the interest of researchers, especially for the pH sensor with flexible medium. In this study, polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) nanofibrous yarn was fabricated by a conjugate electrospinning process and modified with in situ polymerization of polyaniline (PANI) forming a PANI/PVDF yarn. By a weaving process, these yarns could be weaved into a fabric. It was found that both the PANI/PVDF yarn and the fabric showed a sensitivity to pH, about -48.53 mV per pH for yarn and -38.4 mVper pH for fabric, respectively, in the pH range of 4.0-8.0. These results indicated that the prepared PANI-modified PVDF yarn and fabric might have a potential application in intelligent oral and maxillofacial surgery dressings for monitoring wound healing.

Abstract:Water-soluble polyaniline (PANi) was prepared by a “green” method with poly (stryrenesulfonic acid) (PSSA) as a template, and characterized by UV–vis spectroscopy, FT-IR spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). It was found that the films of PANi and its composite with poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) were composed of nanoparticles. The humidity sensitive properties of the both PANi and its composite with PVA were investigated at room temperature. The water-soluble PANi exhibited high sensitivity (impedance change over three orders of magnitude in the range of 15–97%RH) and good sensing linearity on a semi-logarithmic scale, but a relatively large hysteresis of ∼8%RH. In contrast, the composite of PANi and PVA showed a very small hysteresis of ∼2%RH. Moreover, the response was fast and highly reversible. The humidity sensing mechanism of the composite of PANi with PVA was explored by measuring its complex impedance spectra under different humidities.

Abstract:A functionalized tilted fiber grating (TFBG) sensor based on polyaniline (PANI) was proposed for the detection of environmental pH. The pH sensor is fabricated by coating PANI to the surface of optical fiber. The transmission spectrum of the sensor changes significantly with the change of external pH value. Moreover, the sensitivity is directly related to the thickness of the polyaniline film. The test results show that the pH detection range is 2-11.2, and the maximum sensitivity is up to 1.82 dB/pH. Furthermore, the proposed pH sensor exhibits good biochemical compatibility, which exhibits great application prospects in biomedicine field.

Abstract:Water soluble polyaniline (PANI) with polystyrene sulfonic acid and p-toluene sulfonic acid as doping agents was synthesized by chemical oxidation polymerization, and characterized by UV -Vis spectroscopy. A resistive -type thin film humidity sensor based on the PANI was prepared by dip coating. Its impedance changed linearly on a semi-logarithmic scale from 8105 to 4103 in the range of 0～97%RH, showing high sensitivity. In addition, it exhibited a moderate hysteresis of about 4.5 %RH and a fast response (t90% of 10 s and 11 s for adsorption and desorption, respectively). It is promising as a polymer sensitive material for the preparation of high performance humidity sensor capable of detecting low humidity and realizing full range sensing.

Abstract:Recently, there has been exceptional growth in research related to the development of flexible sensors for health analysis. pH measurements can be done non-invasively and continuously, making such sensors an excellent choice for monitoring different stages of wound healing. Here, we report pH functionality of a polyaniline/graphite (PANI/G) composite in a fully-printed potentiometric pH sensor and the effect of graphite loading on sensor functionality. PANI/G composites in different ratios were aerosol-jet printed on Ag/AgCl with and without a graphite layer as the working electrode in a two-electrode potentiometric sensor on a flexible substrate. The role of the graphite layer on the working electrode in the functionality of the sensor has been investigated. The PANI/G composites were prepared by a solution processing method using a graphite paste and polyaniline emeraldine salt powder. Samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electro microscopy, and Fourier transform infrared analysis to investigate the relations between the physical and chemical relations and the performance of the sensors. The sensors were tested in the pH range from 3 to 10, exhibiting a linear, stable and near-Nernstian sensitivity of 53 mV/pH and a response time of 15 s.

Abstract:Skin pH can be used for monitoring infections in a healing wound, the onset of dermatitis, and hydration in sports medicine, but many challenges exist in integrating conventional sensing materials into wearable platforms. We present the development of a flexible, textile-based, screen-printed electrode system for biosensing applications, and demonstrate flexible polyaniline (PANI) composite-based potentiometric sensors on a textile substrate for real-time pH measurement. The pH response of the optimized PANI/dodecylbenzene sulfonic acid/screen-printing ink composite is compared to electropolymerized and drop-cast PANI sensors via open circuit potential measurements. High sensitivity was observed for all sensors between pH 3–10, with a composite based on PANI emeraldine base, demonstrating sufficient response time and a linear sensitivity of −27.9 mV/pH. This exceeded prior flexible screen-printed pH sensors in which all parts of the sensor, including the pH sensing material, are screen-printed. Even better sensitivity was observed for a PANI emeraldine salt composite (−42.6 mV/pH), although the response was less linear. Furthermore, the sensor was integrated into a screen-printed microfluidic channel demonstrating sample isolation during measurement for wearable, micro cloth-based analytical devices. This is the first fully screen-printed flexible PANI composite pH sensor demonstrated on a textile substrate that can additionally be integrated with textile-based microfluidic channels.

Abstract:The rational design of high-performance flexible pressure sensors with both high sensitivity and wide linear range attracts great attention because of their potential applications in wearable electronics and human-machine interfaces. Here, polyaniline nanofiber wrapped nonwoven fabric was used as the active material to construct high performance, flexible, all fabric pressure sensors with a bottom interdigitated textile electrode. Due to the unique hierarchical structures, large surface roughness of the polyaniline coated fabric and high conductivity of the interdigitated textile electrodes, the obtained pressure sensor shows superior performance, including ultrahigh sensitivity of 46.48 kPa(-1) in a wide linear range (<4.5 kPa), rapid response / relaxation time (7 / 16 ms) and low detection limit (0.46 Pa). Based on these merits, the practical applications in monitoring human physiological signals and detecting spatial distribution of subtle pressure are demonstrated, showing its potential for health monitoring as wearable electronics.
PANI/Ti3C2Tx composite nanofiber-based flexible conductometric sensor for the detection of NH3 at room temperature

Abstract:The rational design of sensing materials with distinct morphologies and compositions is important to construct outstanding flexible gas sensors. Herein, a mesh polyaniline (PANI)/Ti3C2Tx composite nanofiber-based flexible sensor was constructed by electrospinning of PANI and few-layer Ti3C2Tx nanosheets. Sensing results indicated that this novel PANI/Ti3C2Tx flexible sensor demonstrated much higher NH3 sensing response (2.3-fold improvement @ 20 ppm) in comparison with the sensor based on pure PANI nanofibers at 25 °C. Under different bending angles (maximum compression of 150°) and different bending times (maximum bending of 3200 times), the PANI/Ti3C2Tx flexible sensor maintained steady sensing behavior towards 20 ppm NH3, which reflected its good flexible bending stability. The PANI/Ti3C2Tx flexible sensor also exhibited good selectivity, repeatability, as well as good long-term stability. The improvement of NH3 sensing properties can be ascribed to the formation of Schottky junctions between PANI and Ti3C2Tx nanosheets, improved protonation degree of PANI, and the special three-dimensional mesh fiber structure. Our work revealed that the PANI/Ti3C2Tx composite nanofibers with interconnected mesh fiber structure have great potential to construct flexible NH3 sensors.

Abstract:The development of room temperature NH3 sensors with flexible substrate can fulfill the future demands of high NH3 sensing performance under the premise of lower energy consumption and safety circumstance in wearable electronics field. The polyaniline and a serious of WO3 hollow spheres@ polyaniline hybrid were successfully synthesized via a combined route of simple hydrothermal method and in-situ chemical oxidative polymerization. The room temperature NH3 sensors were fabricated by assembling WO3 hollow spheres@ polyaniline hybrid on flexible polyethylene terephthalate (PET) films. The NH3 sensing properties of the fabricated devices demonstrated that the device utilizing 10 mol% WO3 hollow spheres@ polyaniline (PAWHs 10) hybrid exhibited the best sensing performance to 100 ppm NH3 (response value at 25) at 20 degrees C. Moreover, the PAWHs10 hybrid sensor also achieved excellent NH3 selectivity, ppb-level detection limit (1.67-500 ppb NH3), and good response/recovery rates (136 s/130 s) at 20 degrees C. The enhanced sensing performance of incorporation of polyaniline and WO3 hollow spheres was mainly attributed to the hollow structure of WO3 and the formation of p-n heterojunction between PANI and WO3 hollow spheres.

Abstract:Gas sensors for the detection of toxic gases have attracted extensive attention due to the growing environment issue. Polysiloxane is an ideal substrate material for the flexible electronic devices. In this work, dual-activity siloxane monomer with double bonds and epoxy groups (MAGETDS) was synthesized via hydrosilylation reaction. A series of flexible polysiloxane substrate were then prepared based on the dual-activity siloxane via UV-thermal induced polymerization reaction. Besides, the regulating of reactive monomers endows the flexible polysiloxane with tunable properties. Then, polyaniline (PANI) was synthesized via a facile in-situ chemical oxidation polymerization technique and directly loaded on the polysiloxane substrate to fabricate a polyaniline/polysiloxane flexible nanocomposite film as a novel room temperature NH3 sensor. This novel NH3 sensors exhibited good selectivity, reproducibility and a low detection limit of 5 ppm towards NH3 at room temperature. The strategy we developed may provide a promising approach in flexible electronics for room temperature gas sensing application.
