Abstract:Meso-structured (opal and inverse opal) polymeric hydrogels of varied morphology and composition were prepared by using two methods: post-modification of the template-synthesized structured polymers and template-polymerization of functional monomers. A polyacrylic acid based inverse opal hydrogel was chosen to demonstrate its fast pH response by changing color, which is important in designing tunable photonic crystals. Template effects of the hydrogels on controlling structure of the template-synthesized inorganic materials were discussed. The catalytic effect of acid groups in the templates was emphasized for a preferential formation of TiO2 in the region containing acid groups, which allowed duplicating inorganic colloidal crystals from colloidal crystal hydrogels (or macroporous products from macroporous hydrogels) via one step duplication.

Abstract:In nature, some organisms have the ability to camouflage to adapt to environmental changes; they blend with the environment by changing their skin colors. Such a phenomenon is of great significance for the research of adaptive camouflage materials. In this study, we propose a novel design scheme for the study of angle-independent photonic materials and successfully prepare an electrically tunable multi-color display angle-independent inverse opal photonic gel (IOPG). After photopolymerization of hydroxyethyl methacrylate with ionizable monomer acrylic acid (AA) in a long-range disordered opal template and etching, the angle-independent inverse opal photonic gel is obtained, presenting a single structural color. The electrically responsive color changes can be achieved at different angles. The color of the disordered AA-IOPG changes from green to blue-green when applying +4 V bias voltage and from green to orange when applying −4 V bias voltage. The electrochromism of the disordered AA-IOPG is mainly due to the local pH change caused by water electrolysis under bias voltage, which leads to a change of the swelling ratio. The disordered AA-IOPG shows high color tunability and durability through repeated opposite bias voltage tests, indicating that it is a promising conductive photonic material.

Abstract:Photonic crystals, which are materials with periodic dielectric constants on the submicroscale, have been the focus of research for an extended period. Photonic soft materials have been extensively developed for use as colorimetric indicators and mechanochromic sensors, but their limited mechanical properties and molding characteristics only suitable for films restrict their practical implementation. Herein we report an approach to synthesize highly stretchable photonic soft materials based on a hydrogel system that is cross-linked by a crystalline colloidal array. The intrinsic inhomogeneous submicroscale structure is exploited for effective reinforcement in the multiphase system of the photonic crystals. The photonic hydrogels exhibit a high deformation capacity, with a stretching deformation above 2800% and compression above 98%. The gel has a full-color tunable range and shows 460 nm photonic shifts that can be reversibly actuated by a small compressive stress (kPa level) and can be ink-written to form patterns and freestanding structures. Mechanochromic sensors are constructed based on the three-dimensional and two-dimensional Bragg diffraction of the gel. Owing to its mechanical strength, formability, and tunable colors, the gel can be used in wearable optical devices, colorimetric tactile sensors, and full-color displays.

Abstract:Cephalopods can change their color and patterns by activating the skin chromatophores for camouflage. However, in the man-made soft material systems, it is greatly challenging to fabricate the color-change structure in the desired patterns and shapes. Herein, we employ a multi-material microgel direct ink writing (DIW) printing method to make mechanochromic double network hydrogels in arbitrary shapes. We prepare the microparticles by grinding the freeze-dried polyelectrolyte hydrogel and immobilize the microparticles in the precursor solution to produce the printing ink. The polyelectrolyte microgels contain mechanophores as the cross-linkers. We adjust the rheological and printing properties of the microgel ink by tailoring the grinding time of freeze-dried hydrogels and microgel concentration. The multi-material DIW 3D printing technique is utilized to fabricate various 3D hydrogel structures which could change into a colorful pattern in response to applied force. The microgel printing strategy shows great potential in the fabrication of the mechanochromic device with arbitrary patterns and shapes.

Abstract:Multifunctional hyperbranched poly(poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate) (HB-PEGDA) polymers with well-defined composition, structure, and functionality are proposed in this work as photonic hydrogel scaffolds. By taking advantage of its unique transparency, low intrinsic viscosity, and high amount of vinyl groups, the HB-PEGDA can effectively penetrate inside the colloidal photonic crystal (CPC) substrate and be cross-linked with thiolated hyaluronic acid very quickly. This photonic hydrogel shows not only an unexpected protective effect to the untreated CPC substrate, but also nonswelling characteristics attributed to its relatively compacted network structure, which leads to robust structural integrity and credible, consistent optical performance under complex physiological conditions. Moreover, this photonic hydrogel shows good biocompatibility and can be easily modified to introduce specific functions (e.g., cell attachment), providing novel insights into the photonic hydrogel design toward diverse bio-optical applications.

Abstract:This article describes an opal photonic crystal double‐network hydrogel with structural color and fluorescent responsiveness. The opal hydrogel is combining a double‐network hydrogel with polystyrene photonic crystals. The double‐network of the opal hydrogel is composed of nanocomposite hydrogel as the first network and ionic crosslinked hydrogel as the second network. The opal hydrogel exhibits structural color responsiveness to mental ions and organic solvents. In addition, the opal hydrogel shows fluorescent responsiveness to various mental ions. Moreover, the characteristics of nanocomposite and double‐network crosslinking ensure that the opal hydrogel has enough mechanical properties to undergo a long‐time or cycle visual detection. Photonic crystal hydrogels are widely used in the field of visual detection, based on the response of the structural color to external stimulus, such as pH, temperature, near‐infrared light, and so on. Here, we develop an opal photonic crystal hydrogel by combining polystyrene (PS) photonic crystals with a fluorescent double‐network hydrogel and focus on both its visual detection function and mechanical property. The opal hydrogel is composed of nanocomposite hydrogel as the first network and ionic crosslinked hydrogel as the second network. The introduction of PS photonic crystals and terbium ions endows the opal hydrogel distinctive structural colors and fluorescence, respectively. Because of volume changes, the structural color of the opal hydrogel selectively responses to metal ions and organic solvents. Attributing to the ion exchange interaction, the opal hydrogel exhibits fluorescent responses to various metal ions. Combining the responsiveness of structural color and fluorescence, a visual dual‐detection mode is set up, with better detection sensitivity and selectivity. Moreover, the characteristics of nanocomposite and double‐network crosslinking ensure the opal hydrogel enough mechanical properties to undergo cycle visual detection. Consequently, the fabricated opal hydrogel is promising for use in visual detection to multiple substances in single‐ or dual‐detection mode.

Abstract:Responsive photonic crystals have attracted much attention due to their strong capability to manipulate the propagation of light in the visible region, but it is still a big challenge to invisibility and mechanical stability. Here, the novel Poly(ether sulfone)/Poly(acrylic acid) inverse opal photonic crystals, which have high mechanical stability and can release visible patterns after wetting with water, are discussed. The Poly(ether sulfone)/Poly(acrylic acid) inverse opal photonic crystals are also responsive to the concentration of ethanol, and the structural color response times increase with increasing ethanol concentration. This design uses the selective infiltration, hydrogen bonding and capillary action of solvent to realize the spectral diversity of reflectance. Owing to the high polarity and hydrogen bonding ability of carboxyl groups, water molecules are adsorbed easily by the poly(acrylic acid) gel. Subsequently, the encrypted information is decrypted due to the redshift of the structural color. Because of its lower polarity and hydrogen bonding ability relative to water, ethanol can impede the absorption of solvent by gel. Therefore, the ethanol concentration can be identified based on the structural color response time. Furthermore, reliable information decryption methods make Poly(ether sulfone)/Poly(acrylic acid) inverse opal photonic crystals potentially uesful as trusted encryption devices.

Abstract:Inverse opal of molecularly imprinted photonic hydrogels (MIPHs) represents an important colorimetric sensing platform, where the order and connectivity of inverse-opal structure is critical. However, MIPHs constructed by conventional approaches generally bear many cracks and merely presents order in short range. Herein, we report a facile approach to overcome these challenges by integrating evaporative co-deposition of colloids suspended within a hydrogel precursor and polymerization of monomers in single step. Co-deposition of colloids, imprinted molecules, and polymeric monomers as well as concurrent polymerization is firstly studied in detail. As-prepared inverse opal of MIPHs presents high order in long range and almost no crack. Different parameters affecting sensing performance were optimized in detail. MIPHs present high selectivity, sensitivity, and rapid response due to highly ordered inverse-opal structure and molecular recognition sites which are situated either at surface or in proximity to surface. Additionally, a mathematic relationship between Bragg diffraction wavelength shift of MIPHs and analyte concentration is proposed, enabling that MIPHs can not only be used in qualitative detection by visually perceptible color, but could quantitatively infer analyte concentration based on fitted equation. This work would provide an important inspiration for future construction of molecularly imprinted photonic hydrogels.

Abstract:Photonic crystal has become a powerful technique for regulating electromagnetic waves due to its excellent features, such as structure designability and dynamic adjustability; in addition, it has great application value. In this paper, we visualize colors on the Ostwald color model and analyze the color differences of each group of color patches via the minimum color difference model. The manipulation law of particle size, temperature, and humidity on the color change of photonic crystal hydrogel is verified by these color analyses.

Abstract:One-dimensional photonic crystals or multilayer films produce colors that change depending on viewing and light illumination angles because of the periodic refractive index variation in alternating layers that satisfy Bragg's law. Recently, we have developed multilayered photonic hydrogels of two distinct bulk geometries that possess an alternating structure of a rigid polymeric lamellar bilayer and a ductile polyacrylamide (PAAm) matrix. In this paper, we focus on fabrication of composite gels with variable photonic band gaps by controlling the PAAm layer thickness. We report programmable angle-dependent and angle-independent structural colors produced by composite hydrogels, which is achieved by varying bulk and internal geometries. In the sheet geometry, where the lamellae are aligned parallel to the sheet surface, the photonic gel sheet exhibits strong angle-dependent colors. On the other hand, when lamellae are coaxially aligned in a cylindrical geometry, the gel rod exhibits an angle-independent color, in sharp contrast with the gel sheet. Rocking curves have been constructed to justify the diverse angle-dependent behavior of various geometries. Despite varying the bulk geometry, the tunable photonic gels exhibit strong mechanical performances and toughness. The distinct angle dependence of these tough photonic materials with variable band gaps could benefit light modulation in displays and sensor technologies.

Abstract:Biologically inspired self-healing structural color hydrogels were developed by adding a glucose oxidase (GOX)- and catalase (CAT)-filled glutaraldehyde cross-linked BSA hydrogel into methacrylated gelatin (GelMA) inverse opal scaffolds. The composite hydrogel materials with the polymerized GelMA scaffold could maintain the stability of an inverse opal structure and its resultant structural colors, whereas the protein hydrogel filler could impart self-healing capability through the reversible covalent attachment of glutaraldehyde to lysine residues of BSA and enzyme additives. A series of unprecedented structural color materials could be created by assembling and healing the elements of the composite hydrogel. In addition, as both the GelMA and the protein hydrogels were derived from organisms, the composite materials presented high biocompatibility and plasticity. These features of self-healing structural color hydrogels make them excellent functional materials for different applications.

Abstract:Ionic hydrogels have attracted extensive attention because of their wide applicability in electronic skins, biosensors, and other biomedical areas. Tremendous effort is dedicated to developing ionic hydrogels with improved detection accuracy and multifunctionality. Herein, we present an inverse opal scaffold-based structural color ionic hydrogel with the desired features as intelligent patches for wound management. The patches were composed of a polyacrylamidepoly(vinyl alcohol)-polyethylenimine-lithium chloride (PAM-PVA-PEI-LiCl) inverse opal scaffold and a vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) mixed methacrylated gelatin (GelMA) hydrogel filler surface. The scaffold imparted the composite patches with brilliant structural color, conductive property, and freezing resistance, while the VEGF-GelMA surface could not only prevent the ionic hydrogel from the interference of complex wound conditions but also contribute to the cell proliferation and tissue repair in the wounds. Thus, the hydrogel patches could serve as electronic skins for in vivo wound healing and monitoring with high accuracy and reliability. These features indicate that the proposed structural color ionic hydrogel patches have great potential for clinical applications.

Abstract:Hydrogels are the most relevant biochemical scaffold due to their tunable properties, inherent biocompatibility, and similarity with tissue and cell environments. Over the past decade, hydrogels have developed from static materials to "smart" responsive materials adapting to various stimuli, such as pH, temperature, chemical, electrical, or light. Light stimulation is particularly interesting for many applications because of the capability of contact-free remote manipulation of biomaterial properties and inherent spatial and temporal control. Moreover, light can be finely adjusted in its intrinsic properties, such as wavelength and intensity (i.e., the energy of an individual photon as well as the number of photons over time). Water is almost transparent for light in the photochemically relevant range (NIR-UV), thus hydrogels are well-suited scaffolds for light-responsive functionality. Hydrogels' chemical and physical variety combined with light responsiveness makes photoresponsive hydrogels ideal candidates for applications in several fields, ranging from biomaterials, medicine to soft robotics. Herein, the progress and new developments in the field of light-responsive hydrogels are elaborated by first introducing the relevant photochemistries before discussing selected applications in detail.

Abstract:Simulation of self-recovery and diversity of natural photonic crystal (PC) structures remain great challenges for artificial PC materials. Motivated by the dynamic characteristics of PC nanostructures, here, we present a new strategy for the design of hydrogel-based artificial PC materials with reversible interactions in the periodic nanostructures. The dynamic PC hydrogels, derived from self-assembled microgel colloidal crystals, were tactfully constructed by reversible crosslinking of adjacent microgels in the ordered structure via phenylboronate covalent chemistry. As proof of concept, three types of dynamic colloidal PC hydrogels with different structural colors were prepared. All the hydrogels showed perfect self-healing ability against physical damage. Moreover, dynamic crosslinking within the microgel crystals enabled shear-thinning injection of the PC hydrogels through a syringe (indicating injectability or printability), followed by rapid recovery of the structural colors. In short, in addition to the great significance in biomimicry of self-healing function of natural PC materials, our work provides a facile strategy for the construction of diversified artificial PC materials for different applications such as chem-/biosensing, counterfeit prevention, optical display, and energy conversion.

Abstract:Herein, high strength dual-crosslinked hydrogels with photo-switchable color changing behavior were designed and fabricated. In the mixture solution of alpha-cyclodextrin (alpha-CD), alpha-cydodextrin-spiropyran (alpha-CD-SP), and poly (ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA), the PEGDA chains first threaded into the cavity of alpha-CD/alpha-CD-SP and form inclusion complexes to generate the physical gel; then, the as-prepared physical gels were subjected to photo-polymerization to form a covalently crosslinked network. With the contribution of both no-covalent and covalent bond, the dual-crosslinked hydrogels possess high tensile strength, which is about fifteen times that of the pure PEG hydrogel. And due to the sacrifice of no-covalent bond, hydrogels showed high energy dissipation ratio, up to 75.3% and high fatigue resistance during loading-unloading tests. While the ingenious introduction of SP moieties, enables the as-prepared gels photo-switchable spatiotemporal color changing behavior reversibly. Erasable patterns on hydrogels could be written using UV light and erased by Vis light for multiple cycles. This flexible hydrogel with good physical performance shows high potential in photochromic flexible wearable devices.

Abstract:With the development of deformation structured color materials and sensor signal analysis, the combination of photonic crystals with optical structure characteristics and highly sensitive hydrogels in the environment can stimulate response under conditions of mechanical deformation, temperature, humidity, pH, etc. Optical-based hydrogel sensors avoid these disadvantages of conventional sensors, such as non-destructive measurements, high-speed transmission, almost interference-free, telemetry remote control, and many other advantages. This paper introduces the optical properties of photonic crystals and the synthesis of hydrogel polymers, and describes the working principle of photonic crystal hydrogel sensors. There is no systematic generalization of the direction of flexible sensors, so this paper summarizes the progress in the direction of physical, chemical, and biological sensors, and reviews the related research applications, and discusses the potential future directions and development challenges.

Abstract:A self-healable poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) gelated crystalline colloidal array (GCCA) photonic crystal hydrogel was presented. The GCCA material efficiently diffracted visible light, and the structural color change induced by tensile stress could be easily distinguished by the naked eye. We proved that the multicolored GCCA with three-dimensional (3D) complex shapes could be prepared on a large scale through self-healing, and invisible quantum dots could be printed within the interfaces of the healed photonic crystal (PC) hydrogels, thus providing a method for the construction of multilevel PC structures with complex optical properties, such as heterostructures, secondary colors, and photonic printings.

Hydrogel-Encased Photonic Microspheres with Enhanced Color Saturation and High Suspension Stability

Abstract:Regular arrays of colloidal particles can produce striking structural colors without the need for any chemical pigments. Regular arrays of colloidal particles can be processed into microparticles via emulsion templates for use as structural colorants. Photonic microparticles, however, suffer from intense incoherent scattering and lack of suspension stability. We propose a microfluidic technique to generate hydrogel-shelled photonic microspheres that display enhanced color saturation and suspension stability. We created these microspheres using oil-in-water-in-oil (O/W/O) double-emulsion droplets with well-defined dimensions with a capillary microfluidic device. The inner oil droplet contains silica particles in a photocurable monomer, while the middle water droplet carries the hydrogel precursor. Within the inner oil droplet, silica particles arrange into crystalline arrays due to solvation-layer-induced interparticle repulsion. UV irradiation solidifies the inner photonic core and the outer hydrogel shell. The hydrogel shell reduces white scattering and enhances the suspension stability in water. Notably, the hydrogel precursor in the water droplet aids in maintaining the solvation layer, resulting in enhanced crystallinity and richer colors compared with microspheres from O/W single-emulsion droplets. These hydrogel-encased photonic microspheres show promise as structural colorants in water-based inks and polymer composites.
Versatile Titanium Dioxide Inverse Opal Composite Photonic Hydrogel Films Towards Multi-Solvents Chip Sensors

Abstract:Photonic crystals with orderly periodic structure and manipulated structural colors have garnered widespread attention in sensors field. However, the unsatisfactory detection range, low sensitivity and inconvenient integration highly limit their further practical applications. In this paper, by combining TiO2 inverse opal photonic crystal with polyacrylamide hydrogel, a novel organic-inorganic composite solvents responsive photonic hydrogel (SRPH) was developed. By encapsulating TiO2 inverse opal photonic crystal with high refractive index in this hydrogel, the photonic hydrogels, therefore, possess bright structural colors. Due to the discrepancy in swelling rate of SRPH film in various solvents (ethanol, dimethyl formamide, dimethyl sulfoxide, etc.), it can identify these organic solvents through the rapid change of structural colors and detect the concentrations of the solvent in a wide range. Even for solvents with similar refractive index, it can be clearly distinguished, along with the excellent repeatability. Benefiting from the wide detection range and high sensitivity, the chip sensors were then developed by integrating multiple hydrogel films into the microfluidic system, which have high efficiency in solvent naked-eye multi-identification and concentration multi-detection. The new composite photonic hydrogels provide a reference for the design of functional photonic crystals and next-generation application of sensors.
