Abstract:A magnetic CoFe2O4/cellulose nanocrystal (CoFe2O4/CNCs) composite was successfully prepared by a facile hydrothermal method and characterized as a Fenton-like catalyst for the methylene blue (MB) degradation. The structure and properties of this composite were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier -Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FESEM), Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), EDX mapping, Vibrating-sample magnetometer (VSM), and Ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis). Magnetic CoFe2O4 nanoparticles (CoFe2O4 NPs) were firstly synthesized and CNCs were then immobilized on the CoFe2O4 surface under hydrothermal conditions. The CoFe2O4/CNCs material had a smaller size with an average diameter of about 22 nm compared to the bare CoFe2O4 of 26 nm. In addition, CoFe2O4/CNCs possessed higher saturation magnetization (Ms) and smaller residual magnetization (Mr) than those of CoFe2O4. The Ms and Mr values of CoFe2O4/CNCs were 49.2 and 7.4 emu. g-1, respectively compared to those of CoFe2O4 (32.3 and 9.6 emu.g-1, respectively). The photo-Fenton catalytic activities were measured by the degradation of MB under UVA light illumination with the presence of H2C2O4 as a radical-producing source. The CoFe2O4/CNCs catalyst showed the ability to decompose MB at room temperature by 20% higher than that of the bare CoFe2O4. The stability of the catalyst was confirmed by its reuse in four consecutive cycles. Based on the environmental sustainability and magnetic separability, CoFe2O4/CNCs composite would be a relatively economical and environmentally friendly catalyst for practical applications in dye wastewater treatments.
