Abstract:Background: It’s currently unclear whether internet-based psychological interventions can help people stop procrastinating. We conducted a meta-analysis and a systematic review of randomized controlled trials to assess the psychological interventions to reduce procrastination through mobile devices. Methods: We systematically searched PsycINFO, ERIC, Web of Science, Scopus, EBSCO, as well as CNKI for randomized controlled trials (published between Jan 1st, 1950, and March 3rd, 2022; in English and Chinese) comparing the treatment group and control group. The pooled data were assessed using a random-effects model. The evaluation of the bias risk was also done. The subgroup analyses were done to see if delivery modes, type of intervention, treatment support, type of participants, country, number of participants, gender composition, and the number of sessions had any moderating effects.Findings: Of 687 identified studies, 7 were eligible studies with 15 treatment groups and had been included in our analysis (N = 1786 participants, 1074 participants in the treatment group, and 712 participants in the control group). The average age ranged from 21.61 to 39.46 years. For major outcomes of procrastination, random-effect models found modest impact sizes, favoring treatment (Hedges’ g=-0.58, 95% CI [-0.91, -0.24]). Significantly different heterogeneity had been found between studies (Q (14) =113.38, I2=87.83%). Subgroup analysis demonstrated that cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) (Hedges’ g=-0.86, 95% CI [-0.91, -0.25]) could significantly decrease procrastination. Interpretations: Meta-analysis found that an internet-based intervention combined with cognitive behavioral therapy could improve. Nevertheless, further research needs to design randomized retest trials because of the heterogeneity in subgroup analysis.
