Abstract:The phase structures, thermodynamic properties and charge-discharge performances of the alloys (Ml)(z)(Ni3.8Co0.75Mn0.4Ti0.05) have been investigated. The results show that the alloys retain a single LaNi5 phase for x<1.00. But a variety of secondary phases preciptate and the abundances of the secondary phases increase for x greater than or equal to 1.00. The enthaply (-Delta H) of the hydride formation, unite cell volume of the alloy and plateau width of P-C-T curve increase with increasing s value, but the plateau pressure decreases. The discharge capacity reaches, a maximum value (307.7mAh/g) at x=1.00. The cyclical durability of the alloys with x<1.00 is better than that of the alloys with x greater than or equal to 1.00.

Abstract:Palladium is a prototypical hydride-forming metal, which can accommodate a large volume of hydrogen through the formation of either interstitial or complex hydrides. Interstitial palladium hydrides, especially those with exceptionally high hydrogen loadings, have attracted considerable interest from the low-energy nuclear reaction (LENR) community, as they have been invoked to explain the anomalous nuclear effects related to the known but controversial Pons-Fleischmann experiment. Complex palladium hydrides also constitute a class of solid-state hydrides that present stoichiometric PdH 2 , PdH 3 , or PdH 4 units within the crystal structure, but remain unexplored as far as the unusual H/Pd ratio is concerned. This minireview gives a brief introduction to these two types of solid-state palladium hydrides, with the hope of providing some information for materials development relevant to LENR research.

Abstract:The hydriding and dehydriding properties of some multi-component rare earth-Mg alloys La2-xMxMg16Ni (M = Ca or Zr, x = 0.05 - 0.2) were studied. It is found that partial substitution of Ca or Zr for La leads to a noticeable increase in hydrogen absorption capacities. These alloys also demonstrate improved hydriding and dehydriding kinetics. La2Mg18Ni and its substitution alloys have much better hydriding kinetics, especially for temperature below 200-degrees-C. Its mechanism is analyzed on the basis of surface analysis.

Abstract:Understanding hydrogen intercalation and deintercalation in palladium is the key to utilizing palladium-based materials for hydrogen storage, hydrogen separations, and electrochemical hydrogen evolution and CO2 reduction catalysis. Here, we combine in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction and coulometry measurements with density functional theory calculations to provide complementary insights on the dynamics of hydrogen intercalation and deintercalation under electrochemical conditions. By employing multimodal in situ characterization, we demonstrate that the interplanar d-spacing and the hydrogen/palladium ratio are decorrelated under certain conditions. Additionally, there is a clear hysteresis in the electrode potentials where the beta-phase of palladium hydride forms and disappears. Computed energetics of hydrogen intercalation and deintercalation predict this hysteresis. These calculations indicate that the potential-driven absorption of subsurface hydrogen during intercalation and oxidation of surface hydrogen during deintercalation could contribute to the observed hysteresis. These results suggest that surface processes during hydrogen intercalation and deintercalation are important, providing additional mechanistic understanding that is complementary to bulk phase transition theory. This multimodal in situ characterization and computational study provides new insights into hydrogen intercalation and deintercalation in palladium electrodes, which could lead to improvements in palladium-based materials needed in a sustainable energy economy.

Abstract:The research progress of high performance hydrogen storage electrode alloys is reported. The contents include the effects of composition of rare earth elements, the impurities (Fe, Si, Mg) and produce techniques (annealing treatment in vacuum and rapid solidification) on the electrochemical properties of AB5 type hydrogen storage alloys, the relationship between the electrochemical properties and the phase structures or composition of AB2 type Zr-based Laves phase alloys. The performances of several new multicomponent Zr-based hydrogen storage electrode alloys are also presented.
The Effect of the Iridium Alloying and Hydrogen Sorption on the Physicochemical and Electrochemical Properties of Palladium

Abstract:Thin layers (up to 1 µm) of Pd-Ir alloys were electrodeposited from aqueous, galvanic baths of PdCl2 and IrCl3 mixtures. The morphology of the electrodeposits was examined by means of scanning electron microscopy. The composition of alloys was determined with the use of energy-dispersive spectroscopy, atomic absorption spectrometry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Auger electron spectroscopy. For the studies of the electrochemical properties of alloys, cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry, and chronopotentiometry were used. It was found that Pd-Ir alloy electrodes were surface-enriched with Pd. Pd-Ir alloys subjected to different electrochemical treatment involving hydrogen sorption changed their surface state. The continuous hydrogen sorption enhanced the Ir ions' dissolution. The values of thermodynamic functions of hydrogen sorption in strong alkaline electrolytes were comparable with those in acidic electrolytes, whereas the kinetics of the process in alkaline medium was hindered. The miscibility gap in the Pd-Ir-H system vanished for the electrode containing ca. 93.7 at.% Pd.

Abstract:The palladium-hydrogen system is one of the most famous hydrogen-storage systems. Although there has been much research on β-phase PdH(D)x , we comprehensively investigated the nature of the interaction between Pd and H(D) in α-phase PdH(D)x (x<0.03 at 303 K), and revealed the existence of Pd-H(D) chemical bond for the first time, by various in situ experimental techniques and first-principles theoretical calculations. The lattice expansion, magnetic susceptibility, and electrical resistivity all provide evidence. In situ solid-state 1 H and 2 H NMR spectroscopy and first-principles theoretical calculations revealed that a Pd-H(D) chemical bond exists in the α phase, but the bonding character of the Pd-H(D) bond in the α phase is quite different from that in the β phase; the nature of the Pd-H(D) bond in the α phase is a localized covalent bond whereas that in the β phase is a metallic bond.

Electronic structure and crystal phase stability of palladium hydrides

Abstract:The results of electronic structure calculations for a variety of palladium hydrides are presented. The calculations are based on density functional theory and used different local and semilocal approximations. The thermodynamic stability of all structures as well as the electronic and chemical bonding properties are addressed. For the monohydride, taking into account the zero-point energy is important to identify the octahedral Pd-H arrangement with its larger voids and, hence, softer hydrogen vibrational modes as favorable over the tetrahedral arrangement as found in the zincblende and wurtzite structures. Stabilization of the rocksalt structure is due to strong bonding of the 4d and 1s orbitals, which form a characteristic split-off band separated from the main d-band group. Increased filling of the formerly pure d states of the metal causes strong reduction of the density of states at the Fermi energy, which undermines possible long-range ferromagnetic order otherwise favored by strong magnetovolume effects. For the dihydride, octahedral Pd-H arrangement as realized e.g. in the pyrite structure turns out to be unstable against tetrahedral arrangement as found in the fluorite structure. Yet, from both heat of formation and chemical bonding considerations the dihydride turns out to be less favorable than the monohydride. Finally, the vacancy ordered defect phase Pd3H4 follows the general trend of favouring the octahedral arrangement of the rocksalt structure for Pd:H ratios less or equal to one.

Abstract:AB(2) type Ti-Zr-V-Mn-Ni-based Laves phase hydrogen storage alloys have a very high initial electrochemical discharge capacity, but the capacity decreases drastically within several charging-discharging cycles in KOH electrolyte which impede their applications as the negative electrode materials in Ni-MH batteries. In is work, Mn was partially substituted by Cr in the Ti-Zr-V-Mn-Ni hydrogen storage alloy and the effects of Cr substitution on the phase structure, microstructure and electrochemical properties of the alloys have been investigated. It is found that the cycle durability of the alloy electrodes have been greatly improved with Cr substitution despite the decrease of discharge capacities. Based on the XRD and EDS analysis, the alloys are mainly composed of C14 Laves phase matrix with hexagonal structure and TiNi type secondary phase with bcc structure. With Cr substitution, another V-Cr solid solution with bee structure appears. The metallographic observation shows that both the as cast and annealed alloys consist of a continuous C14 Laves phase matrix and TiNi type secondary phase with dendritic structure.

Abstract:Palladium is one of the most important technological materials, yet its phase diagram remains poorly understood. At ambient conditions, its solid phase is face-centered cubic (fcc). However, another solid phase of Pd, body-centered cubic (bcc), was very recently predicted in two independent theoretical studies to occur at high pressures and temperatures. In this work, we report an experimental study on the room-temperature equation of state (EOS) of Pd to a pressure of 80 GPa, as well as a theoretical study on the phase diagram of Pd including both fcc-Pd and bcc-Pd. Our theoretical approach consists in ab initio quantum molecular dynamics (QMD) simulations based on the Z methodology which combines both direct Z method for the simulation of melting curves and inverse Z method for the calculation of solid–solid phase transition boundaries. We obtain the melting curves of both fcc-Pd and bcc-Pd and an equation for the fcc–bcc solid–solid phase transition boundary as well as the thermal EOS of Pd which is in agreement with experimental data and QMD simulations. We uncover the presence of another solid phase of Pd on its phase diagram, namely, random hexagonal close-packed (rhcp), and estimate the location of the rhcp-bcc solid–solid phase transition boundary and the rhcp–fcc–bcc triple point. We also discuss the topological similarity of the phase diagrams of palladium and silver, the neighbor of Pd in the periodic table. We argue that Pd is a reliable standard for shock-compression studies and present the analytic model of its principal Hugoniot in a wide pressure range.

Abstract:Phase transitions in reactive environments are crucially important in energy and information storage, catalysis and sensors. Nanostructuring active particles can yield faster charging/discharging kinetics, increased lifespan and record catalytic activities. However, establishing the causal link between structure and function is challenging for nanoparticles, as ensemble measurements convolve intrinsic single-particle properties with sample diversity. Here we study the hydriding phase transformation in individual palladium nanocubes in situ using coherent X-ray diffractive imaging. The phase transformation dynamics, which involve the nucleation and propagation of a hydrogen-rich region, are dependent on absolute time (aging) and involve intermittent dynamics (avalanching). A hydrogen-rich surface layer dominates the crystal strain in the hydrogen-poor phase, while strain inversion occurs at the cube corners in the hydrogen-rich phase. A three-dimensional phase-field model is used to interpret the experimental results. Our experimental and theoretical approach provides a general framework for designing and optimizing phase transformations for single nanocrystals in reactive environments.

Abstract:In this comprehensive study, an in‐depth analysis of phase transformations in a Pd‐Cu‐Ag alloy, crucial for applications in hydrogen membranes and electrical components, is presented. Our investigation places emphasis on the influence of the deformation rate and addition of Ag on the formation of the ordered CuPd phase. This study focuses on a specific alloy composition, 49.1% Cu ‐ 41.3% Pd ‐ 8.3% Ag ‐ 1.3% Ru, investigating its behavior under various conditions. Through comprehensive analysis, including the influence of the initial state, deformation variations, and chemical composition modifications, we employed high‐energy X–ray diffraction to unveil detailed phase evolution dynamics. Surprisingly, experimental findings deviated from the anticipated phase diagram, uncovering a previously unrecognized 3–phase region with the formation of AgPd. Notably, the study reveals the pivotal role of the alloy's Ag content in the development of ordered CuPd and AgPd phases. The addition of Ru exhibits no involvement in the observed phase transformations, contributing to our understanding of the alloy's composition‐dependent behavior. This research provides valuable insights into the intricate interplay of factors influencing phase transformations, offering a nuanced perspective beyond theoretical predictions. The newfound understanding of Ag's role and Ru's inertness contributes to refining material design considerations, enhancing our grasp of the alloy's thermodynamic stability under varying conditions. Abstract:New EAM potentials for the ternary palladium-silver-hydrogen system are developed by extending a previously developed palladium-hydrogen potential. The ternary potentials accurately capture the heat of mixing and structural properties associated with solid solution alloys of palladium-silver. Stable hydrides are produced with properties that smoothly transition across the compositions. Additions of silver to palladium are predicted to alter the properties of the hydrides by decreasing the miscibility gap and increasing the likelihood of hydrogen atoms occupying tetrahedral interstitial sites over octahedral interstitial sites.

High entropy alloys and their affinity to hydrogen: from Cantor to platinum group elements alloys

Abstract:Properties of high entropy alloys are currently in the spotlight due to their promising applications. One of the least investigated aspects is the affinity of these alloys to hydrogen, its diffusion and reactions. In this study we apply high-pressure at ambient temperature and investigate stress-induced diffusion of hydrogen into the tructure of high entropy alloys HEA including the famous Cantor alloy as well as less known, but nevertheless important platinum group PGM alloys. By applying X-ray diffraction to samples loaded into diamond anvil cells we perform a comparative investigation of these HEA alloys in Ne and H2 pressure-transmitting media. Surprisingly, even under stresses far exceeding conventional industrial processes both Cantor and PGM alloys show exceptional resistance to hydride formation, on par with widely used industrial grade CuBe alloys. Our observations inspire optimism for practical HEA applications in hydrogen-relevant industry and technology e.g. coatings, etc, particularly those related to transport and storage.

Creation of Novel Solid-Solution Alloy Nanoparticles on the Basis of Density-of-States Engineering by Interelement Fusion

Abstract:Currently 118 known elements are represented in the periodic table. Of these 118 elements, only about 80 elements are stable, nonradioactive, and widely available for our society. From the viewpoint of the "elements strategy", we need to make full use of the 80 elements to bring out their latent ability and create innovative materials. Furthermore, there is a strong demand that the use of rare or toxic elements be reduced or replaced while their important properties are retained. Advanced science and technology could create higher-performance materials even while replacing or reducing minor or harmful elements through the combination of more abundant elements. The properties of elements are correlated directly with their electronic states. In a solid, the magnitude of the density of states (DOS) at the Fermi level affects the physical and chemical properties. In the present age, more attention has been paid to improving the properties of materials by means of alloying elements. In particular, the solid-solution-type alloy is advantageous because the properties can be continuously controlled by tuning the compositions and/or combinations of the constituent elements. However, the majority of bulk alloys are of the phase-separated type under ambient conditions, where constituent elements are immiscible with each other. To overcome the challenge of the bulk-phase metallurgical aspects, we have focused on the nanosize effect and developed methods involving "nonequilibrium synthesis" or "a process of hydrogen absorption/desorption". We propose a new concept of "density-of-states engineering" for the design of materials having the most desirable and suitable properties by means of "interelement fusion". In this Account, we describe novel solid-solution alloys of Pd-Pt, Ag-Rh, and Pd-Ru systems in which the constituent elements are immiscible in the bulk state. The homogeneous solid-solution alloys of Pd and Pt were created from Pd core/Pt shell nanoparticles using a hydrogen absorption/desorption process as a trigger. Several atom percent replacements of Pd with Pt atoms resulted in a significantly enhanced hydrogen absorption capacity compared with Pd nanoparticles. AgxRh1-x and PdxRu1-x solid-solution alloy nanoparticles were also developed by nonequilibrium synthesis based on a polyol method. The AgxRh1-x nanoparticles demonstrated hydrogen storage properties, although pure metal nanoparticles of each constituent element do not adsorb hydrogen. AgxRh1-x is therefore considered to possess a similar electronic structure to Pd as a synthetic pseudo-palladium. The PdxRu1-x nanoparticles showed enhanced catalytic activity for CO oxidation, with the highest catalytic activity found using the equimolar Pd0.5Ru0.5 nanoparticles. The catalytic activity of the Pd0.5Ru0.5 nanoparticles exceeds that of the widely used and best-performing Ru catalysts for CO oxidation and is also higher than that of neighboring Rh on the periodic table. Our present work provides a guiding principle for the design of a suitable DOS shape according to the intended physical and/or chemical properties and a method for the development of novel solid-solution alloys.
A tale of two phase diagrams: Interplay of ordering and hydrogen uptake in Pd-Au-H

Abstract:Due to their ability to reversibly absorb/desorb hydrogen without hysteresis, Pd--Au nanoalloys have been proposed as materials for hydrogen sensing. For sensing, it is important that absorption/desorption isotherms are reproducible and stable over time. A few studies have pointed to the influence of short and long range chemical order on these isotherms, but many aspects of the impact of chemical order have remained unexplored. Here, we use alloy cluster expansions to describe the thermodynamics of hydrogen in Pd--Au in a wide concentration range. We investigate how different chemical orderings, corresponding to annealing at different temperatures as well as different external pressures of hydrogen, impact the behavior of the material with focus on its hydrogen absorption/desorption isotherms. In particular, we find that a long-range ordered L1$_2$ phase is expected to form if the \ce{H2} pressure is sufficiently high. Furthermore, we construct the phase diagram at temperatures from \unit[250]{K} to \unit[500]{K}, showing that if full equilibrium is reached in the presence of hydrogen, phase separation can often be expected to occur, in stark contrast to the phase diagram in para-equilibrium. Our results explain the experimental observation that absorption/desorption isotherms in Pd--Au are often stable over time, but also reveal pitfalls for when this may not be the case.

Solid-liquid phase coexistence and structural transitions in palladium clusters

Abstract:We use molecular dynamics with an embedded atom potential to study the behavior of palladium nanoclusters near the melting point in the microcanonical ensemble. We see transitions from both fcc and decahedral ground state structures to icosahedral structures prior to melting over a range of cluster sizes. In all cases this transition occurs during solid-liquid phase coexistence and the mechanism for the transition appears to be fluctuations in the molten fraction of the cluster and subsequent recrystallization into the icosahedral structure.

The Thermal Stability of Asymmetric Separated Configurations inside Alloy Nanoparticles: Atomic-Scale Modeling of Pd-Ir Nanophase Diagrams

Abstract:Compared to alloy bulk phase diagrams, the experimental determination of phase diagrams for alloy nanoparticles (NPs), which are useful in various nanotechnological applications, involves significant technical difficulties, making theoretical modeling a feasible alternative. Yet, being quite challenging, modeling of separation nanophase diagrams is scarce in the literature. The task of predicting comprehensive nanophase diagrams for Pd-Ir face-centered cubic-based three cuboctahedra is facilitated in this study by combining the computationally efficient statistical-mechanical Free-energy Concentration Expansion Method, which includes short-range order (SRO) with coordination-dependent bond-energy variations as part of the input and with rotationally symmetric site grouping for extra efficiency. This nanosystem has been chosen mainly because of the very small atomic mismatch that simplifies the modeling, e.g., in the assessment of vibrational entropy contributions based in this work on fitting to the Pd-Ir experimental bulk critical temperature. This entropic effect, together with SRO, leads to significant destabilization of low-T Quasi-Janus (QJ) asymmetric configurations of the NP core, which transform to symmetric partially mixed nanophases. First-order and second-order intracore transitions are predicted for dilute and intermediate-range compositions, respectively. Caloric curves computed for the former case yield the NP-size dependent transition latent heat, and in the latter case critical temperatures exhibit a specific scaling behavior. The computed separation diagrams and intracore solubility diagrams reflect enhanced elemental mixing in smaller QJ nanophases. Counterintuitive Effects of Isotopic Doping on the Phase Diagram of H 2 –HD–D 2 Molecular Alloy

Abstract:Significance When hydrogen and deuterium are mixed, they form H 2 +HD + D 2 mixtures at very low pressures and room temperature. We show that at high pressures and low temperatures these mixtures behave as an isotopic molecular alloy (ideal solution); exhibiting symmetry-breaking phase transitions between phases I, II, and III; and shifting the transformations to phases II and III to higher pressures as compared to pure isotopes. This runs counter to any quantum effects based on isotope mass but can be explained by quantum trapping of high-kinetic energy states by the exchange interaction.

Abstract:Hydrogen-based fuels demand high-density storage that can operate under ambient temperatures. Pd and its alloys are the most investigated metal hydrides for hydrogen fuel cell applications. This study presented an alternative Pd alloy for hydrogen storage that can store and release hydrogen at room temperature. The surface of the most studied Pd (110) was modified with Au and Rh so that the hydrogen adsorption energy was 0.49 eV and the release temperature was 365 K. Both values are quite near to the optimum values for the adsorption energy and release temperature of a hydrogen fuel cell in real-world usage.
