Potential health benefits of forest exposure include physical activities and psychological benefits of contacting with forest ecosystem services. However, little research shows integral framework for the relationship of forest human well-being and ecosystem services. Hence we develop the framework that employ ecosystem services in particularly focus on forest types that influence health. The implications of this work provide not only for further study but also contribute to practitioner.

Abstract:Forests have provided support for human health and survival since ancient times. With improved public awareness of health issues and the importance of forest ecological functions, forest therapy has gradually gained momentum. Forest therapies have been applied around the world as preventive and alternative therapies to promote human health. As a safe, side-effect-free, low-cost, preventive, and alternative therapy, forest therapy has been scientifically proven to promote physical and mental health in humans. However, the forest therapy service system is still underdeveloped, and forest therapy has not become a mainstream part of clinical medical treatment methods in most countries worldwide. Therefore, in order to better present the development path and current situation of forest therapy in different countries and provide guidance for how other countries can develop similar interventions and clinical sites to base these activities, this study uses Germany, Japan, and China as examples to systematically tease out how forest therapy has developed and the status of forest therapy services in different countries, as well as the health benefits of forest therapy. Furthermore, the key components and traditional cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds related to forest therapy are discussed. Finally, based on published empirical research, we believe that forest therapy can be a solution to public health problems thanks to its multiple, medically proven health benefits. Forest therapy facilitates the return of people to the forest and nature to achieve health and well-being effects. However, there is a need for more research on the mechanisms (such as the immune system, endocrine system, nervous system, etc.) underlying forest therapy's effectiveness, which should include strengthened collaborations between disciplines. In addition, the role of forest therapy services in promoting human health needs to be emphasized.

Abstract:With the improvement of people's living standards and the upgrade of consumers’ need, people pursue healthy travel, consumption, and a livable living environment. Therefore, health tourism has increasingly become a new way of tourism, which is more and more favored and recognized by society. Moreover, the increase in the number of sub-healthy people and the age of population have also prompted people's needs for health tourism. China is vast, and natural recreation environment such as coastal, forests, grasslands, and lakeside provides a solid foundation for the development of different characteristics of health tourism in various places. With rich forest tourism resources, Zhejiang Province has become one of the provinces that nationwide to carry out pilot piloting of forest health tourism. This article analyzes the development status of the Zhejiang forest health tourism and the survey of tourists on the needs of forest health tourism, Which is based on literature research, field survey, and questionnaire surveys. This article finally puts forward reference suggestions on the development of forest health tourism in Zhejiang Province.

Study on the Geographical Spatial Characteristics of Forest Health Resorts in Fujian Province, China

Abstract:Forest health tourism is an increasingly popular new form of tourism. Fujian Province, with its abundant forest resources, ranks among the top provinces in China in terms of forest coverage and holds significant development potential. The study focuses on 80 provincial-level forest health resorts in Fujian Province, China. Software such as the ArcGIS geographic information system is used to analyze the resorts' nearest neighbor index, geographic concentration index, kernel density, etc., thus indicating their spatial distribution characteristics. Overlay analysis, correlation analysis, and fitting analysis are employed to explore the spatial distribution specificity and its influencing factors. The research results indicate that forest health resorts in the area exhibit an aggregated distribution with a higher overall concentration. They are influenced by factors such as the distribution of river systems, the accessibility of transportation, distance to central cities, and socio-economic conditions. The geographic concentration index (G) is 50.28 and the unevenness index (S) is 0.640, both indicating that the forest health resorts in Fujian Province demonstrate a distribution pattern of "overall dispersion with multiple core aggregations". Based on the research findings, the article puts forward some policy insights. Taking into account the local geographical characteristics, it advocates for the rational development of forest health resort industry models suitable for the region. It suggests incorporating innovative ideas into the forest health resort industry in order to broaden development channels. Additionally, it emphasizes the importance of close collaboration between the government and the market for mutual development.

Abstract:<p>Based on first-hand data from the forest resources inventory of five representative forest farms in Beijing, this study quantitatively evaluates forest ecosystem health at sub-compartmental level for the years 2004, 2009 and 2014, using GIS technology, spatial statistical methods and mathematical modelling. The spatio-temporal pattern and evolution features of the health conditions of forest sub-compartments are explored, taking into account different forest types, forest age groups and forest categories. Our results indicate that the health condition of forest sub-compartments improved significantly between 2004 and 2014. The area and number of forest sub-compartments at the "healthy" level showed obvious increases, and most forest sub-compartments that were classed as "unhealthy" and "morbid" improved to a "sub-healthy" level. Most of the forest sub-compartments above the "healthy" level were part of middle-aged forests, near-mature forests, mature forests and over-mature forests, while the sub-compartments below the "unhealthy" level were mainly young forests. The health conditions of the categories shelter forests and special-purpose forests were found to be better than that of economic forests. Further analysis shows that the forest sub-compartments with better health conditions were mainly concentrated in the Ecological Conservation Zone of Beijing, while those in the New Urban Development Zone and the Functional Expansion Zone displayed relatively poor conditions. The spatio-temporal evolution characteristics of forest health in the study area were shown to be mainly affected by geographical location, forest resources, socio-economic development, natural environment and forestry policies. We argue that the research can provide a scientific reference for the sustainable development and scientific management of forest farms in the process of implementing rural revitalization strategy in Beijing.</p>

Abstract:Exposure to forest environments promotes human health. The number of relevant studies in this area has increased rapidly. However, an overall review of relevant analyses from the perspectives of bibliometrics and visualization is lacking. A scientometric analysis of 2,545 publications from 2007 to 2021 via the Web of Science database was conducted to identify the knowledge structure and frontiers objectively. The publications were subsequently analyzed in terms of the distribution of journals and countries, citation bursts, major subject areas, and evolutionary stages. The findings showed that the knowledge foundation of forest therapy was multidisciplinary with most published in the fields of environmental sciences and ecology but lacking input from social disciplines. The research hotspots evolved from the early focus on individual benefits obtained from nature to increasing attention on human well-being at the social-ecological scale. More rigorous experiments with strict randomized controlled trials and blinding are needed to accommodate the trend of forest therapy toward non-pharmacological treatments. According to Shneider's four-stage theory, forest therapy research is in the third stage of the scientific research process. More future studies utilizing novel technologies and decision-making frameworks to solve practical issues are needed for introducing health into policies and promoting human well-being.

A Comprehensive Evaluation of Environmental Quality for Health Ecotourism in Huangshan National Forest Park

Abstract:In recent years, people’s life rhythm is fast due to which life pressure is increasing, and the ecological environment is seriously polluted. All these factors contribute to serious physical and mental health issues, posing a direct threat to people’s health. Due to these factors, health tourism and recreational tourism of traditional Chinese medicine pay more attention. In this paper, Huangshan National Forest Park is selected as the actual research object, and the environmental quality of healthy ecotourism is analyzed according to the current situation of the forest park. It employs the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) to identify 12 different indicators of ecotourism’s environmental quality. It establishes a comprehensive evaluation index system for the ecotourism environmental quality, as well as an evaluation model based on this system. Furthermore, a comprehensive evaluation model is established using the fuzzy math analysis method, and five levels of standards are established to judge the level of ecodevelopment of the Huangshan National Forest Health and Maintenance. By calculating the weight of each index in the evaluation system, the result of a comprehensive evaluation is 75.92 points, which is in the good grade. The experimental results show that the eco-environmental resources in Huangshan National Forest Park are of higher quality. The planned landscape is more attractive, the eco-environmental area is larger, the cleanliness of the air in the forest park is higher, and the service personnel have higher cultural literacy.

Abstract:Abstract Forest therapy is a form of activity used to pursue health benefits from the forest. The term “forest therapy” is often used reciprocally with the terms “forest bathing” and “Shinrin Yoku”. Even with many studies on forest therapy, there remains scarce scientific evidence of a standardised method used in Forest Therapy caused by variations in such treatment programmes. This study aimed to analyse methods used in forest therapy from works of literature from 2017 to 2021. This literature was compiled using Publish or Perish, sorted using the Zotero programme, and visually clustered with the VosViewer programme. 393 research papers were sorted manually based on three criteria: they directly practised forest therapy or forest bathing and analysed its benefit on human health, which was written in English, and accessed online. The 29 items that fit our criteria were further synthesised. Synthesis of these works of literature resulted in the categorisation of methods used for FT intervention. FT methods used by researchers were forest walks, forest viewing, the combination of forest walks and viewing forest landscapes, therapy programmes involving five human senses, doing relaxing activities in the forest and traditional medicine-based therapy. On the other hand, there was also combined methods used. All of these methods benefitted human health. The limitation of this finding is the broad types of forest used for forest therapy. Further research is suggested regarding this matter.

Abstract:Forest landscape space is the basic unit of forest landscape resources. Healthy forest landscape resources can not only improve the sustainable cycle of forest ecological service function, but also have a positive impact on human health and well-being. Evidence supports the view that the forest environment is beneficial to people's health, and further discussion of the dose response between environmental attributes and physical and mental recovery has been widely carried out by scholars. As an important component of environmental attributes, it is necessary to clarify the relationship between vegetation distribution and users' health in order to better plan, design, and utilize forest environmental resources. This study mainly used the virtual immersive forest environment video in VR, and used the difference test in SPSS 23.0 to clarify whether the distribution of vegetation in the forest environment will affect the physiological and psychological recovery effect of users. The main results are as follows: (1) Experiencing the forest environment can promote users' physiological and psychological health, and its recovery effect is significantly better than the indoor environment (p < 0.05). (2) The distribution of vegetation in the forest environment will affect users' physiological and psychological recovery effect. Among them, in the cluster and randomly distributed forest environments, the relaxation and concentration of users can be improved mainly by alleviating their negative emotions. In the evenly distributed forest environment, users mainly achieve the purpose of relaxation by improving their vitality and positive emotions. These results show that the distribution of vegetation is one of the factors for the restoration of forest environment. In the future design and management of the forest environment, the health and well-being of users can be effectively enhanced by getting involved with the vegetation distribution in the site, aiming to provide a scientific basis for the promotion of the rehabilitation function of forest landscape space and its sustainable utilization, thus promoting the sustainable development of forest resources and improving people's quality of life.

Physiological and Psychological Effects of Nature Experiences in Different Forests on Young People

Abstract:Many studies have proved that having nature experiences in forests is conducive to human physiological and psychological health. However, currently there is little research focusing on the effects of forest characteristics and the experiential characteristics of nature experiences on changes in health. In the study, three types of forest (mixed forest; deciduous forest; coniferous forest) and an urban site were used to measure the effects of these environments on participants’ physiological and psychological restoration after nature experience activities (sitting and walking activities). The study participants were 30 young adult students from Beijing Forestry University. Restorative effects were measured by physiological indicators (blood pressure and heart rate) and four psychological questionnaires (Profile of Mood States (POMS); Restorative Outcome Scale (ROS); Subjective Vitality Scale (SVS); Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-being Scale (WEMWBS)). Results demonstrated that all types of forest were beneficial to lower blood pressure and heart rate as well as to reduce negative feelings while boosting positive emotions. The mixed forest was more effective in lowering blood pressure and heart rate as well as increasing vitality. The levels of restoration and positive mental health increased significantly, while all subscales of the POMS (with the exception of vigor) decreased greatly in the coniferous forest. Relative to the sitting activity, obvious decreases in blood pressure and negative emotions were observed, while significant increases in restoration, vitality and positive mental health were observed after the walking activity. In conclusion, the impact on subjects’ health restoration varied with different forest characteristics, and the experiential characteristics of exposure may be helpful for creating supportive interventions and lifting the benefits of forest therapy as people interact with the forest.

Abstract:Mountain forests are managed for various purposes. Of these, recreation, leisure, and ecotourism are increasingly gaining prominence. Yet, with the development of new techniques for creating and managing urban forests, the perception of the public with regard to mountain forests and such urban forests is narrowing. For the purpose of this study, eight mountain forests and urban forests located in Zurich (Switzerland), Vienna (Austria) and Freiburg (Germany) were shortlisted. These places are renowned for their well-functioning management of mountain forests and creation of urban forests. As the study was to focus on the comparison of the perceptions of visitors in terms of their satisfaction in urban and mountain forests, the interview covered the following questions: (i) how satisfactory was the nature experience; (ii) how satisfactory were the outdoor recreational activities; (iii) whether the nature experiences influenced the mental and physical health of visitors. Responses thus received for each of the mountain forests and urban forests were assessed, with the total number of respondents being 247. Tourists visiting the selected areas were randomly chosen for a one-on-one interview survey. Results of the survey show that there is a clear perceptions of visitors differed between urban and mountain forests. However, the gap is insignificant or almost nonexistent with respect to satisfaction level of outdoor recreational activities and health benefits. These results are contrary to the findings of previous studies, which argued that the natural landscape of mountain areas is superior to other artificially built green spaces. Visitors did not perceive significant differences in outdoor recreational activities and health effects between the two spaces.

Does national forest city improve residents' health? Evidence from China

Abstract:Objective: National health is essential for economic and social development. The aim of this article is to examine the relationship, heterogeneity effects and influential mechanisms between National Forest Cities and the residents' health. Methods: The article matches the China Family Panel Studies data in 2018 (CFPS2018) with the 2016–2018 National Forest Cities Construction List, resulting in a final sample of 20,041. Oprobit, Ologit, Instrumental Variable technique (2SLS) and interaction term analysis were used as the main research methods in this article. Results: The findings indicate that: (1) The construction of National Forest Cities significantly improves the residents' health in terms of both physical and mental health, and this conclusion is still valid after a series of robustness tests. (2) On the one hand, National Forest Cities promote residents' health by reducing air pollutants such as SO 2 and soot to reduce residents' health risk exposure; On the other hand, it promotes residents' health by positively guiding them to engage in healthy behaviors. (3) National Forest Cities have a greater effect on the health of urban residents, older adult and lower-income group, suggesting that National Forest Cities are a public benefit. Conclusions: The construction of National Forest Cities is a public welfare that promotes residents' health, and it is an important revelation for accelerating the realization of the Healthy China Strategy. The article provides new empirical evidence for understanding the welfare effects of forest cities and offers new practical paths for improving residents' health.

Abstract:Using field survey data gathered from seven villages in Youxi County in southern China and a list of famous and ancient trees and groves, this study explored the cultural roots and ecological interpretations of village fengshui forests. The results show as follows: the species of fengshui trees selected by Chinese rural villagers bear a symbolic meaning, including health, longevity, flourishing population, fortune, and wealth. Fengshui belief, clan system, village rules and regulations, fengshui worship tradition, and customs have all played important roles in villagers’ planting and conservation of fengshui forests. It is suggested that the government should recognize the cultural and ecological value of fengshui forests and integrate the local rules and village regulations into the current policy frameworks to improve fengshui (culturally preserved) forests management with favourable polices such as subsidies and conservation strategy. China’s fengshui forests suggest the cultural importance of ecosystem services from forests, and the role of culture in forest conservation.

The effects of forest therapy on public mental health and circular economy: A policy support model in Japan

Abstract:Background Forest therapy has gained popularity in Japan and even other nations/regions due to its health benefits. In addition, forest therapy has contributed to the development of circular economy and industrial upgrading. Japanese successful practice can serve as a model for other countries in the Asia-Pacific region. To this end, the aim of this study was to determine whether forest therapy can improve the whole well-being of the participants and has a positive effect on the development of circular economy in the region. Methods Both empirical and inductive research methods were used; empirical approach was conducted to perform comparative analysis of regional data that was retrieved from the research project of Japanese Forestry Agency in 2015. Specifically, the efficacy of forest therapy on physical (blood glucose, blood pressure, body weight) and mental (sleep quality e.g.,) health outcomes among 815 participants was investigated. Regional data are from the statistics of Iiyama City from 1990 to 2005. After the concept of forest therapy became popular in the late 1990s, this element had a great positive impact on the economic benefits of Ishiyama City and other major forest scenic areas. We summarize and analyze a series of policies made by relevant departments of the Japanese government in the years from 2019 to 2021 to promote forest therapy and related circular industry development. Results Significant (pre-to-post participation) changes in physical measure was observed. Firstly, mean weight of those overweight participants decreased across three different time points (pre-test/enrollment = 79.7 kg, 3-month participation = 77.2, and 6-month participation = 76.8 kg), while overall mean weight of the participants decreased to 61, 60.5, and 60.4 kg, respectively. Secondly, Participant with normal weight showed a decrease on mean HbA1C (from 6.09 to 6.06) at Week 24, while overweight participants demonstrated a slight change 6.03–6.01 after 6 months the average HOMA-IR for overweight participants decreased from 3.5 to 2.5 at Week 24, while participants with normal weight demonstrated a decrease from 2.2 to 1.7 at Week 24. Forest Therapy has emerged in Japan since Mid-1990s and has attracted a large number of tourists all over the world due to its unique health benefits. Conclusion Forest therapy in Japan has positive effects on whole well-being of Japanese residents and it has helped public mental health promotion and economic growth. Under the guidance and support of government policies, it can promote the development of circular economy and industrial transformation and set a model of Japanese forest therapy development for other countries in the Asia-Pacific region.

Abstract:Kangyang tourism is the innovative development mode of China’s health industry reform and the emerging industry of the national tourism development strategy. The post-purchase behavior of tourism is an important factor that influences the repeated consumption behavior of recreational tourism consumers.Based on the method of rooting theory, the influencing factors and mechanisms of post-purchase behavior of forest recreation consumers were systematically explored.It is found that there are two factors that affect the consumer satisfaction and the willingness to repeat consumption: the superiority of objective environmental conditions and the subjective perception.Subjective perception is an intrinsic psychological factor that influences the consumer satisfaction of forest recreation consumers and their willingness to repeat consumption.The superiority of objective environmental conditions influences consumers' satisfaction with forest conservation consumption and their subsequent consumption intention through subjective perception.The main contribution of this study lies in innovating the research methods and perspectives of forest conservation, and it is helpful for forest conservation enterprises to make scientific development plans and plans.

Abstract:The growing awareness of the health advantages offered by forests has underscored the significance of forest exposure as an upstream preventive measure against disease. While numerous studies have confirmed the physical and mental health benefits associated with forests, there is still a lack of quantitative understanding regarding the relationship between forest exposure and physiological health benefits (PHB). Particularly, there is insufficient knowledge about the threshold effects derived from short-term forest exposure. In this study, we propose a PHB threshold model for assessing forest exposure that introduces the concepts of efficiency threshold and benefits threshold. A pilot study was conducted in three typical natural forest sites to validate the proposed model. Electroencephalogram (EEG) was continuously measured as the physiological indicator, while meteorological, environmental, and demographic factors were simultaneously collected. The results show that: (1) the proposed PHB threshold model is applicable in a natural forest environment; (2) despite the longer time required to reach the PHB thresholds, forest exposure yielded more significant and prolonged health benefits compared to urban green spaces; (3) meteorological factors, such as temperature and relative humidity, play a crucial role in impacting the PHB threshold model; and (4) exposure to forests is better for deep thinking and relaxation than urban green spaces. These findings emphasize the potential of forests to offer a respite from the stresses of modern life and promote holistic well-being.
