Abstract:Teaching in a smart education environment pays more attention to the individual demands of learners, and adaptive learning can provide technical and methodological support for achieving personalized education. A review of the domestic and foreign research on personalized adaptive learning research is conducted to interpret its system framework and related components. Its implementation mechanism is given at three aspects, i.e., the domain knowledge model, the learner characteristic model, and the teaching model. After a comprehensive analysis, the problems and deficiencies of current research are pointed out. On that basis, the research on related component technologies in recent years that can promote interpretability is introduced to provide references for the next step of personalized adaptive learning research.

Abstract:Adaptive learning systems personalize instruction to students' individual learning needs and abilities. Such systems have shown positive impacts on learning. Many schools in the United States have adopted adaptive learning systems, and the rate of adoption in China is accelerating, reaching almost 2 million unique users for one product alone in the past 3 years. Given such rapid adoption in China, it is useful to examine the efficacy of adaptive learning within that country's educational system. This study aimed to compare the learning impacts of individualized adaptive learning courseware to two common instructional approaches in China: large-group and small-group classroom instruction. This paper describes the results of two efficacy studies of one of China's first adaptive learning systems, Squirrel AI Learning. One study compares classroom-based individualized adaptive learning instruction to large-group instruction, and another to small-group instruction. Chinese eighth-grade students from two provinces randomly assigned to use Squirrel AI Learning showed greater gains on a mathematics test than those randomly assigned to whole-class or small-group instruction led by expert teachers. Findings provide a basis for further research into the selection, use, and impact of adaptive learning systems in Chinese education.

Abstract:Nowadays, teaching involves more and more the usage of digital tools to accompany face-to-face learning. Such a system is being referred to as hybrid teaching. These digital tools include mainly distance learning platforms based on LMS (Learning management systems). LMS help to create on-line digital spaces to store and organize teaching material while providing a pedagogical learning process to connect educational communities. Despite the many forms of content that can be implemented on these platforms, from traditional file-based to interactive and animated content, these systems remain both passive and generic. They lack the ability to adapt to the learner in terms of learning skills, preferences, languages, intellectual abilities, learning patterns and rhythms. This paper proposes a design and modeling of an intelligent and dynamic adaptive learning system based on artificial intelligence with the main objective of identifying and providing personalized learning environments adapted to the learner needs.

Abstract:Adaptive learning system, in essence, is a kind of online learning environment that supports the individual learning. It changes the traditional "just put it on the web" approach, and provides the customized learning according to the individual differences. In order to reducing the "cognition overload" and "disoriented", an architecture of adaptive learning system based on learning style and cognitive state (ALS-LSCS) is put forward in this paper. Referencing AHAM model, the architecture of ALS-LSCS is mainly composed of the media space, domain model, instruction model, learner model, adaptive model and the user interface. To record the cognitive state and learning style of learners, learner model combines the stereotype with the multi-layered overlay model. According to the Felder-Silverman categories, learning style is represented in stereotype. Cognitive state is recorded in Multi-layered overlay model. ALS-LSCS selects the learning content based on learnerpsilas cognitive state, and presents learning content through selecting teaching media based on learnerpsilas learning style.

Abstract:Web-based learning systems, if designed appropriately, offer many advantages over the traditional learning environments. This study addresses the design and development of new approaches and network technologies based on the newly induced pedagogical models to support collaborative teaching, knowledge sharing, lifelong learning opportunities for anyone to offer or participate in courses free of charge. The authors propose and implement a Web-based learning environment called “School for All” in the Web-based Educities. To satisfy the needs of individual instructors, adaptive Web-based authoring tools and methods of teaching have been proposed, including five adaptive modules – Curriculum Setting, Co-teaching and Privileges Setting, Reward Setting, Assessment Setting and Information Sharing Setting. Thirty representative courses that used this adaptive School for All system were under close observations and investigation. An additional questionnaire was also used to collect online teachers' perceptions of this Web-based learning environment. Online teachers reported that these adaptive modules could support their online teaching effectively. More results were presented and more issues regarding online teaching were discussed in this paper.

Abstract:This study delved into the impact of AI-powered adaptive learning platforms on student performance within the context of Chinese classrooms. Utilizing a comprehensive retrospective approach, the research examined the effects of these innovative platforms on academic achievements, engagement levels, and overall learning outcomes. In the past decade, the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into educational technology has revolutionized traditional teaching methods. Adaptive learning platforms, driven by AI algorithms, customize learning experiences to cater to individual student needs and learning paces. This study examined a diverse range of Chinese classrooms, encompassing various grade levels and subjects, to ascertain the widespread influence of such platforms. Data collection involved the analysis of historical student performance data from multiple academic years. The study assessed both quantitative metrics, such as test scores and grade improvements, and qualitative indicators, including student feedback and engagement patterns. Through rigorous statistical analyses, the study established correlations between the utilization of AI-powered adaptive learning platforms and enhanced student performance. The findings revealed a significant positive association between the integration of AI-powered platforms and student outcomes. Students exposed to personalized learning experiences exhibited improved academic achievements compared to those in traditional classrooms. Furthermore, the study identified heightened levels of engagement and motivation, as the adaptability of these platforms catered to individual learning preferences. In conclusion, this research underscores the transformative role of AI-powered adaptive learning platforms in Chinese classrooms, highlighting their ability to elevate student performance and engagement. As China continues to embrace technological advancements in education, this study offers valuable insights into the evolution of pedagogical approaches and their positive outcomes on student learning in the past. Abstract:Computerized Adaptive Testing (CAT) refers to an efficient and personalized test mode in online education, aiming to accurately measure student proficiency level on the required subject/domain. The key component of CAT is the "adaptive" question selection algorithm, which automatically selects the best suited question for student based on his/her current estimated proficiency, reducing test length. Existing algorithms rely on some manually designed and pre-fixed informativeness/uncertainty metrics of question for selections, which is labor-intensive and not sufficient for capturing complex relations between students and questions. In this paper, we propose a fully adaptive framework named Neural Computerized Adaptive Testing (NCAT), which formally redefines CAT as a reinforcement learning problem and directly learns selection algorithm from real-world data. Specifically, a bilevel optimization is defined and simplified under CAT's application scenarios to make the algorithm learnable. Furthermore, to address the CAT task effectively, we tackle it as an equivalent reinforcement learning problem and propose an attentive neural policy to model complex non-linear interactions. Extensive experiments on real-world datasets demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of NCAT compared with several state-of-the-art methods.

Abstract:With the advent of technological advancement in learning, such as context-awareness, ubiquity and personalisation, various innovations in teaching and learning have led to improved learning. This research paper aims to develop a system that supports personalised learning through adaptive content, adaptive learning path and context awareness to meet individual learner's requirements and promote the effectiveness and performance of the learning process. Furthermore, the study used an experimental control group to ascertain the significance of learners' learning styles and preferences in improving learning performance. The model considers different modules such as personalisation, location support, learning plan and context awareness while relying on the proper classification of learners' learning styles. The system was experimented using 127 learners of a Computer Science Course. The result obtained using 10-fold cross-validation on various algorithms shows better performance in ROC, Kappa and Accuracy, which were all used to evaluate the quality of classification outcome and compared with learners' performances in assessments. During classification, Naïve Bayes Model has the highest average ROC value of 0.979, TP Rate of 0.951 and FP Rate of 0.045. The results obtained show an improvement in learning.

Abstract:Adaptive learning systems stand apart from traditional learning systems by offering a personalized learning experience to students according to their different knowledge states. Adaptive systems collect and analyse students' behavior data, update learner profiles, then accordingly provide timely individualized feedback to each student. Such interactions between the learning system and students can improve the engagement of students and the efficiency of learning. This paper evaluates the effectiveness of an adaptive learning system, "Yixue Squirrel AI" (or Yixue), on English and math learning in middle school. The effectiveness of the Yixue's math and English learning systems is respectively compared against (1) traditional classroom math instruction conducted by expert human teachers and (2) BOXFiSH, another adaptive learning platform for English language learning. Results suggest that students achieved better performance using Yixue adaptive learning system than both traditional classroom instruction by expert teachers and another adaptive learning platform.

Abstract:Providing users with high-quality personalised services in an online environment has become a research hotspot due to the rapid growth of Internet technologies. Personalized online teaching for international Chinese teachers takes domain knowledge as the core, computer and other information technologies as the support, and the network as the communication channel. It is an application system that integrates pedagogy, computer science, psychology and behavioral cognition to achieve better online teaching for international Chinese teachers. This paper focuses on the construction and analysis of student models for online teaching of international Chinese teachers, deeply studies and analyzes the advantages and disadvantages of various traditional student models, and improves the student model for online learning. The existing data mining clustering algorithms are studied and analyzed in detail to provide relevant technical support for analyzing learners’ learning characteristics. The experiment shows that the student model and M-Kmeans algorithm proposed in this paper have certain significance and potential application value in personalized online teaching for international Chinese teachers.

Abstract:Abstract The adaptive educational systems within e-learning platforms are built in response to the fact that the learning process is different for each and every learner. In order to provide adaptive e-learning services and study materials that are tailor-made for adaptive learning, this type of educational approach seeks to combine the ability to comprehend and detect a person’s specific needs in the context of learning with the expertise required to use appropriate learning pedagogy and enhance the learning process. Thus, it is critical to create accurate student profiles and models based upon analysis of their affective states, knowledge level, and their individual personality traits and skills. The acquired data can then be efficiently used and exploited to develop an adaptive learning environment. Once acquired, these learner models can be used in two ways. The first is to inform the pedagogy proposed by the experts and designers of the adaptive educational system. The second is to give the system dynamic self-learning capabilities from the behaviors exhibited by the teachers and students to create the appropriate pedagogy and automatically adjust the e-learning environments to suit the pedagogies. In this respect, artificial intelligence techniques may be useful for several reasons, including their ability to develop and imitate human reasoning and decision-making processes (learning-teaching model) and minimize the sources of uncertainty to achieve an effective learning-teaching context. These learning capabilities ensure both learner and system improvement over the lifelong learning mechanism. In this paper, we present a survey of raised and related topics to the field of artificial intelligence techniques employed for adaptive educational systems within e-learning, their advantages and disadvantages, and a discussion of the importance of using those techniques to achieve more intelligent and adaptive e-learning environments.

Abstract:Abstract Effective and engaging E-learning becomes necessary in unusual conditions such as COVID-19 pandemic, especially for the early stages of K-12 education. This paper proposes an adaptive personalized E-learning platform with a novel combination of Visual/Aural/Read, Write/Kinesthetic (VARK) presentation or gamification and exercises difficulty scaffolding through skipping/hiding/ reattempting. Cognitive, behavior and affective adaptation means are included in developing a dynamic learner model, which detects and corrects each student’s learning style and cognitive level. As adaptation targets, the platform provides adaptive content presentation in two groups (VARK and gamification), adaptive exercises navigation and adaptive feedback. To achieve its goal, the platform utilizes a Deep Q-Network Reinforcement Learning (DQN-RL) and an online rule-based decision making implementation. The platform interfaces front-end dedicated website and back-end adaptation algorithms. An improvement in learning effectiveness is achieved comparing the post-test to the pre-test in a pilot experiment for grade 3 mathematics curriculum. Both groups witnessed academic performance and satisfaction level improvements, most importantly, for the students who started the experiment with a relatively low performance. VARK group witnessed a slightly more improvement and higher satisfaction level, since interactive activities and games in the kinesthetic presentation can provide engagement, while keeping other presentation styles available, when needed.

Abstract:This paper aims to analyze the design and application of a robust learning environment using Chinese as a foreign language in the context of web-based teaching. The study employs a carefully planned environment with cutting-edge educational technology and pedagogical techniques for comprehensive language and cultural learning. It creates a browser/server (B/S) framework for teaching Chinese as a foreign language, including system structure, logical design, database integration, and operations, respectively. Specific features like the five-tier logical framework spanning representation and business logic levels are elaborated. The research also presents a resource model that optimizes user preferences and knowledge links using an adaptive multi-objective particle swarm optimization technique, resulting in an efficient and effective learning system. Finally, this study proposes a system for Teaching and Learning Chinese as a foreign language (TCFL) that uses a client-side browser and a server-side browser. Client-side browser provides access to educational materials. Interaction and navigation by the user lead to content presentation and rendering, which displays text, videos, and interactive features. Data management and retrieval manage user requests and business logic on the server side, drawing from a data repository. The scalability and performance of the proposed TCFL system assure smooth operation, while centralized control and governance manage courses and material. The experimental assessment demonstrates the remarkable performance of the suggested TCFL system across critical criteria. The suggested system outperforms other techniques by achieving outstanding results such as increased learning efficiency of 82.4%, increased user engagement and interaction rates of 87.3%, and tailored adaptability with a customization index of 0.865 and adaptive learning rate of 89.5%. The system’s outstanding technical integration, excellent learning outcome enhancement of 82.4%, and practical pedagogical techniques highlight its complete and revolutionary design. This work marks a crucial turning point in the history of learning environments for foreigners. It covers critical language acquisition, user engagement, personalization, and adaptation by pioneering a holistic and technology-infused TCFL system. These accomplishments can change foreign language learning and provide the groundwork for future research and innovation in building global optimum and immersive learning environments for learners.

Abstract:There is a growing interest in developing and implementing adaptive instructional systems to improve, automate, and personalize student education. A necessary part of any such adaptive instructional system is a student model used to predict or analyze learner behavior and inform adaptation. To help inform researchers in this area, this paper presents a state-of-the-art review of 11 years of research (2010-2021) in student modeling, focusing on learner characteristics, learning indicators, and foundational aspects of dissimilar models. We mainly emphasize increased prediction accuracy when using multidimensional learner data to create multimodal models in real-world adaptive instructional systems. In addition, we discuss challenges inherent in real-world multimodal modeling, such as uncontrolled data collection environments leading to noisy data and data sync issues. Finally, we reinforce our findings and conclusions through an industry case study of an adaptive instructional system. In our study, we verify that adding multiple data modalities increases our model prediction accuracy from 53.3% to 69%. At the same time, the challenges encountered with our real-world case study, including uncontrolled data collection environment with inevitably noisy data, calls for synchronization and noise control strategies for data quality and usability.

Abstract:An empirical study of adaptive learning algorithms based on intrinsic motivation in English online teaching and learning delves into the intersection of technology and motivation in language education. By investigating how adaptive learning algorithms can leverage intrinsic motivation factors, such as personal interests and curiosity, researchers aim to optimize online English instruction for individual learners. This paper introduces Weighted Feature Clustering Adaptive Learning (WFCAL) as a novel approach to optimizing English teaching and learning processes. Traditional methods of instruction often fail to address the diverse needs and learning profiles of students, leading to suboptimal outcomes. WFCAL offers a solution by dynamically adapting instructional content based on the individual characteristics of learners, thereby creating personalized learning experiences. Through the application of WFCAL, significant improvements in language proficiency have been observed across various skill domains, including vocabulary, grammar, and reading comprehension. The algorithm clusters learners into groups based on their proficiency levels and adapts instructional delivery to cater to the specific needs of each cluster. This approach promotes engagement, motivation, and efficacy in language learning, leading to enhanced outcomes. learners in Cluster 1 showed an average increase in vocabulary knowledge from 65 to 80, while learners in Cluster 2 demonstrated an improvement from 70 to 85 in grammar understanding. Additionally, reading comprehension skills improved by an average of 10 points across all clusters. The algorithm clusters learners into groups based on their proficiency levels and adapts instructional delivery to cater to the specific needs of each cluster.

Although some studies have found that there is a certain degree of poor learning adaptability in the practice of artificial intelligence (AI) supporting English teaching, most studies only describe the phenomenon and do not further explore the causes of poor learning adaptability. Therefore, the research intends to understand the current situation of college students' English learning adaptability under the support of AI through the investigation and analysis of college students' English learning adaptability under the support of AI and clarifies the impact of various influencing factors on learning adaptability as well as the relationship between learning adaptability and various factors, and put forward strategies to improve students' learning adaptability. This research is a new exploration of learning adaptability in the field of AI English learning. At the same time, it is also an extension of the research environment of learning adaptability in information-based learning and a supplement to the research results. This paper combs the composition structure of college students' English learning adaptability under the support of AI and constructs the influencing factor model of college students' English learning adaptability under the support of AI. Abstract:The article highlights the issues of personalized learning as the global trend of the modern ICTbased educational systems development. The notion, the main stages of evolution, the main features and principles of adaptive learning systems application for teachers training are outlined. It is emphasized that the use and elaboration of the adaptive cloud-based learning systems are essential to provide sustainable development of teachers education. The current trends and peculiarities of the cloud-based adaptive learning systems development and approach of their implementation for teachers training are considered. In the era of big data, student learning data have become an important basis for evaluating teaching effectiveness and guiding teaching direction. However, in the current English teaching process in many universities, there is still insufficient collection, organization, and analysis of student learning data. This makes it difficult for teachers to comprehensively and accurately grasp the learning situation and needs of students, thus being unable to provide targeted teaching guidance. Data mining technology provides teachers with the possibility of gaining a deeper understanding of student learning by collecting and analyzing a large amount of teaching data. The intelligent CAI system can automatically adjust teaching content and difficulty based on students' English proficiency and learning progress, providing tailored learning resources for students. This study proposes an innovative English teaching model based on data mining and intelligent CAI. By collecting learning data from students, including learning duration, grades, interactive behavior, etc., data mining algorithms are used for in-depth analysis to reveal their learning characteristics, difficulties, and interests. These analysis results not only help teachers better understand the learning status of students, but also provide strong support for optimizing teaching content and personalized teaching. Meanwhile, this study also focuses on the application of intelligent CAI technology in college English teaching. The intelligent CAI system provides personalized learning resources and real-time feedback to students by simulating the teaching behavior of human teachers. The system can intelligently recommend learning materials and arrange learning plans based on the learning situation and needs of students, and provide timely guidance and assistance when students encounter problems. This personalized learning approach can stimulate students' interest in learning and improve learning efficiency.
Interactive Course Design and Development for Cognitively Inspired Distance International Chinese Education

Abstract:This paper conducts in-depth research and analysis on the design and development of interactive courses for distance international Chinese language education using the cognitive heuristic model. The A-frame framework and JavaScript (JS) language are used to complete the construction of the virtual supermarket environment and initially design the basic framework of task-based courseware for Chinese language teaching based on virtual reality technology. Experts were invited to conduct two rounds of prestudy on the index system and determine the evaluation indexes. The international students in the junior Chinese class of X University were randomly selected as the research subjects and divided into experimental and control groups for the experimental intervention teaching. The content and form of classroom teaching were the same for both groups, and they were asked to review and consolidate the grammar points learned in class after class. The only intervention was that the experimental group was required to conduct microlearning after class with the classroom grammar points, while the control group was not required to do the same form of review after class. In addition, the students in the experimental group were followed up as a case study, and their attitudes, behaviors, and knowledge proficiency in the microlearning were recorded in detail to assess the students' acceptance and satisfaction of the microlearning from the perspective of qualitative analysis. It was found that the microlessons for teaching and learning Chinese as a foreign language can stimulate learners' interest in learning, achieve good interactive effects, and contribute to the improvement of learners' performance. This paper combines virtual reality technology, fully explores the role that immersive VR technology can play in providing cultural scenarios in the target language, and maximizes the use of existing technological vehicles and resources for Chinese teaching application design, to solve the challenges of poor interactivity in online teaching and the lack of socio-cultural contexts that have long existed in overseas Chinese teaching.
