Abstract:The purpose of the work is to create a computer model that allows to reproduce the technological process of logging, taking into account a huge number of various conditions that can affect the final result of the enterprise, to obtain the data necessary for making effective managerial and organizational decisions on labor standardization and the preparation of regulatory documentation. To do this, using the agent-based modeling method, a simulation model of the production process was created in the AnyLogic program. The functioning of the proposed model is carried out on the basis of significant statistical data on the most important characteristics of individual elements of the production process. The article demonstrates the possibilities of modeling technological schemes of work at the cutting site at the design stage of the technological map without the need for real felling of forest plantations. The diagram of the conditions of the harvester’s work is presented, embedded in the simulation model created by the authors, which allows the researcher to conduct a step-by-step analysis of the work of the logging machine. An information-logical detailing of all blocks of the harvester work state diagram is shown, which allows understanding the principle of analysis when clearing the site for a new working position, analyzing the availability of trees in apiaries, processing of tree trunks, taking into account all movements and organizational and technical downtime in the process of developing forest cuttings. The reader is presented with a graphical demonstration of the choice of trees available for felling, as well as an analysis of the situation for moving to a new working position of the harvester. The sequence of data entry into the model and the principles of fixing the scientific results obtained on the basis of modeling are outlined. The created simulation model will allow forest users to compare the options for the technological schemes of the harvester's movement along the forest cutting with the choice of the best organizational and management solutions; creation of labor standards and production standards for the development of forest cuttings in any natural and production conditions for any model of the harvester used, depending on the type of felling and the species and quality characteristics of the felled trees.

Abstract:One way to increase the productivity of artificial forestation is to control the density and relative position of trees. In this regard, there are tasks of finding the optimal planting schemes to obtain the maximum wood stock of a given diameter. Based on the developed simulation model, a comparative analysis of the productivity of spruce stands with different planting schemes was carried out. The optimal forest planting schemes for spruce stands, which provide the maximum stock of small, medium and large wood, are determined. It is shown that in order to maximize the stock of wood of different size classes, different initial planting densities are required. The higher the size classes of the grown wood, the lower the optimal planting density.

Abstract:Abstract At present, a significant area of Siberian dark coniferous forests is characterized by a significant decrease in resistance due to recurrent forest fires, mass reproduction of insect pests and diseases, which leads to their natural degradation and death. However, the intensity of the growth processes of the coniferous stand under certain forest conditions persists in the long term. Therefore, the creation of regression models of the course of forest growth with the identification of forest conditions is very important both from the point of view of practice and environmental monitoring. The object of the study was the stands of Siberian fir ( Abies sibirica Ledeb) and Siberian spruce ( Picea obovate Ledeb) of bonitet classes III-IV, growing in the conditions of the West Siberian southern taiga plain forest region on the territory of the Yenisei forestry of the Krasnoyarsk Territory. The initial data for studying the processes of natural growth of fir and spruce plantations were the materials of the mass inventory of 11097 units. As a result of the work carried out for modal fir-spruce stands, concentrated in the territory of Central Siberia (Yenisei forestry of the Krasnoyarsk Territory), regression models of the growth course have been developed, which make it possible to predict the dynamics of taxation indicators and reproduce the succession picture of the development of stands.

Abstract:Miombo woodlands constitute the most extensive type of forest cover within South and East Africa, Tanzania in particular, and they are seriously threatened by intensive degradation and deforestation. The dynamics of miombo stands were examined in this study using a simple simulation system applied to experimental stands at the Kitulangalo Forest Reserve (KFR) in Tanzania. Prediction of tree-level diameter increment, mortality, and ingrowth across species groups with empirical models based on data from experimental sites constituted the essential elements of the simulation system. Diameter distribution, stand basal area, volume yield, and above-ground biomass accumulation were assessed in three harvesting alternatives across three species groups. The results indicate a high degree of positive response to careful selective harvesting in lightly degraded, recovering miombo forests. Simulation systems compiled from experimentally based models seem promising as tools for research on stand dynamics and sustainable management alternatives in miombo woodlands.

Abstract:The current and conventional technique of forest growth projection is based on empirical approach of statistical analysis. Forest stoking based on aggregated group values of volume and number of trees species and their respective sizes. The tree mapping approach using geographic information system (GIS) in forest inventory made the ecological and system analysis approach possible. In this study, we have developed a simulation system based on the individual trees with the use of forest inventory. With its tree location, the simulation for individual trees looks possible. The projection will take into account the competition among trees and layers of canopy to get sunlight and its survival. The mortality and recruitment of trees and seedlings will be simulated based on its location in the forests. This approach seems feasible particularly on its ability to project the distribution of individual tree, sapling and seedling in their respective location. In addition, this approach will improve the decision making process of the sustainable management of tropical forest as well as to improve its information database system.

Abstract:This paper reports on a visual simulation system that supports GIS-based realistic modeling and real-time rendering of forest scenes. Geometric models of trees are automatically generated according to inventory database and pre-designed template models. A combined image and geometry representation method for 3D tree model is given with a specific level of detail algorithm for ensuring real-time frame rates. We have tested and evaluated the system in applications of walkthrough simulation and forest fire visualization.

A Model Investigation of Vegetation-Atmosphere Interactions on a Millennial Timescale

Abstract:A terrestrial biosphere model with dynamic vegetation capability, Integrated Biosphere Simulator (IBIS2), coupled to the NCAR Community Atmosphere Model (CAM2) is used to investigate the multiple climate-forest equilibrium states of the climate system. A 1000-year control simulation and another 1000-year land cover change simulation that consisted of global deforestation for 100 years followed by re-growth of forests for the subsequent 900 years were performed. After several centuries of interactive climate-vegetation dynamics, the land cover change simulation converged to essentially the same climate state as the control simulation. However, the climate system takes about a millennium to reach the control forest state. In the absence of deep ocean feedbacks in our model, the millennial time scale for converging to the original climate state is dictated by long time scales of the vegetation dynamics in the northern high latitudes. Our idealized modeling study suggests that the equilibrium state reached after complete global deforestation followed by re-growth of forests is unlikely to be distinguishable from the control climate. The real world, however, could have multiple climate-forest states since our modeling study is unlikely to have represented all the essential ecological processes (e.g. altered fire regimes, seed sources and seedling establishment dynamics) for the re-establishment of major biomes.

Abstract:Land use change (LUC) is among the main anthropogenic disturbances in the global carbon cycle. Here we present the model developments in a global dynamic vegetation model ORCHIDEE-MICT v8.4.2 for a more realistic representation of LUC processes. First, we included gross land use change (primarily shifting cultivation) and forest wood harvest in addition to net land use change. Second, we included sub-grid evenly aged land cohorts to represent secondary forests and to keep track of the transient stage of agricultural lands since LUC. Combination of these two features allows the simulation of shifting cultivation with a rotation length involving mainly secondary forests instead of primary ones. Furthermore, a set of decision rules regarding the land cohorts to be targeted in different LUC processes have been implemented. Idealized site-scale simulation has been performed for miombo woodlands in southern Africa assuming an annual land turnover rate of 5 % grid cell area between forest and cropland. The result shows that the model can correctly represent forest recovery and cohort aging arising from agricultural abandonment. Such a land turnover process, even though without a net change in land cover, yields carbon emissions largely due to the imbalance between the fast release from forest clearing and the slow uptake from agricultural abandonment. The simulation with sub-grid land cohorts gives lower emissions than without, mainly because the cleared secondary forests have a lower biomass carbon stock than the mature forests that are otherwise cleared when sub-grid land cohorts are not considered. Over the region of southern Africa, the model is able to account for changes in different forest cohort areas along with the historical changes in different LUC activities, including regrowth of old forests when LUC area decreases. Our developments provide possibilities to account for continental or global forest demographic change resulting from past anthropogenic and natural disturbances.
Re-imagining the Future of Forest Management -- An Age-Dependent Approach towards Harvesting

Abstract:Facing the drastic climate changes, current strategies for enhancing carbon dioxide stocks need to be thoroughly honed. To address the problem, we first built a carbon sequestration growth model driven by growth rate dependency (GRDM). We abstracted the carbon cycling system into the process of photosynthesis, the humidity fluctuation, and the original storage of carbon in the trees. In the photosynthesis model, we considered various factors, including transition rate of absorption and organic matter production. We also designed an Economic Return Evaluation Model (EREM) to estimate the optimal distribution of trees in the forest based on the utility function. Maximizing the utility brought by the amount of carbon storage, we derived the equation for profit optimization with the constraints of total economic expenses allowed. To assess its performance, we took an object-oriented approach, simulated an ideal forest by placing instances of trees and plotted a time-dependent forest composition graph. After proper normalization of climate and economic data, we also make predictions for 169 worldwide forest-covered countries. Our model further suggests high sensitivity and robustness with a similar trend of overall utility when environmental aridity or proportion of harvested woods are varied. Finally, we apply the model to Georgia temperate deciduous forest, and we evaluate the carbon storage ability to adjust the Red Spruce based on available biological literature research. We recognize that while the model is preliminary in its failure to identify a diverse array of variables, it has encapsulated key features of idealized forests.

Abstract:Modeling and predicting forest landscape dynamics are crucial for forest management and policy making, especially under the context of climate change and increased severities of disturbances. As forest landscapes change rapidly due to a variety of anthropogenic and natural factors, accurately and efficiently predicting forest dynamics requires the collaboration and synthesis of domain knowledge and experience from geographically dispersed experts. Owing to advanced web techniques, such collaboration can now be achieved to a certain extent, for example, discussion about modeling methods, consultation for model use, and surveying for stakeholders' feedback can be conducted on the web. However, a research gap remains in terms of how to facilitate online joint actions in the core task of forest landscape modeling by overcoming the challenges from decentralized and heterogeneous data, offline model computation modes, complex simulation scenarios, and exploratory modeling processes. Therefore, we propose an online collaborative strategy to enable collaborative forest landscape dynamic prediction with four core modules, namely data preparation, forest landscape model (FLM) computation, simulation scenario configuration, and process organization. These four modules are designed to support: (1) voluntary data collection and online processing, (2) online synchronous use of FLMs, (3) collaborative simulation scenario design, altering, and execution, and (4) participatory modeling process customization and coordination. We used the LANDIS-II model as a representative FLM to demonstrate the online collaborative strategy for predicting the dynamics of forest aboveground biomass . The results showed that the online collaboration strategy effectively promoted forest landscape dynamic prediction in data preparation, scenario configuration, and task arrangement, thus supporting forest-related decision making.

Abstract:Co-management of forest resources is a process of governance that enables all relevant stakeholders to participate in the decision-making processes. Illegal logging and forest degradation are currently increasing, and logging bans are ineffective in reducing forest degradation. At the same time interest in forest plantations and concern about poverty problems of neighboring people whose livelihoods depend on forest services and products continue to increase rapidly. Governments have identified the development of small forest plantations as an opportunity to provide wood supplies to forest industries and to reduce poverty. However, the development of small plantations is very slow due to an imbalance of power and suspicion between communities and large companies. This paper proposes a framework for linking social, economic and biophysical dynamics to create multi-agent simulations and explore scenarios of collaboration for plantations. Multi-agent simulation is a branch of artificial intelligence that offers a promising approach to dealing with multi-stakeholder management systems, such as common pool resources. It provides a framework which allows analysis of stakeholders’ (or agents’) interactions and decision making. Each stakeholder has explicit communication capacities, behaviors and rationales from which emerge specific actions. The purpose of this modeling is to create a common dynamic representation to facilitate negotiations for growing trees. A system of governance involving multi-stakeholders, especially local communities and wood based industries appearing to offer the most promising pathway to accelerating plantation development, local community poverty alleviation and forest landscape improvement.
Quasi-physical simulation of large-scale dynamic forest scenes

Abstract:This paper presents a quasi-physically based approach for interactively simulating large-scale dynamic forest scenes under different wind conditions. We introduce theories from the wind engineering, and model the natural wind field as a stationary stochastic process. To reduce the geometry complexities without sacrificing much image quality, we adopt a hybrid geometry/image representation scheme to faithfully model the appearance of trees. Some simplified mechanical rules are employed to compute the movement of such tree models. Three kinds of level of details concerning the scene geometry, the movement of trees and the wind field, are exploited to accelerate the simulation. For forest scenes with tens of thousands of animated trees, our implementation with programable graphics hardware achieves visually plausible results at interactive frame rates on consumer PC platforms.

Abstract:To carry out artificial reforestation, it is necessary to use mechanized means – tree-planting machines. The lack of domestic tree-planting machines is one of the problems of artificial reforestation in Russia. The purpose of the study is to substantiate the design parameters of a tree-planting machine with a disk operating device. To achieve this goal, the use of modern software environments is required with the possibility of full consideration of all factors affecting the machine. In the course of this research, a solid model of a tree-planting machine has been developed by means of a computer-aided design system. The “Universal Mechanism 9.1” software package, designed for modeling the dynamics and kinematics of mechanical systems, has been chosen as a computational environment studying the parameters of the model. Only the input values for the simulation model have been introduced into the software package, since the mathematical apparatus is embedded in the core of the program. Using the software package, a simulation model of a tree-planting machine has been created, taking into account both the interaction of the machine links and the discrete contact interaction of the seedling with the machine and the soil. A computational experiment has been carries out and the kinematic and dynamic parameters of the tree-planting machine have been established, in which the feeder would not interfere with the free fallout of the briquette with the seedling. The geometric parameters of the mechanism have been determined to match the cam profile with its movement along with the disk and the operation of the roller tappet so that the grippers install the briquette with the seedling into the soil in a timely manner. The trajectory of movement of the briquette with the seedling has been found. With the help of FDM 3D-printing, a full-size model of a disk planting apparatus has been made, and a laboratory experiment has been conducted to establish the required torque on the hub of the planting apparatus disk and the shaft of the drum. The results of the experiment have confirmed the adequacy of the developed simulation model.
Successful modeling of the environmental changes' influence on forests' vegetation over North Eurasia

Abstract:Modeling of forests' vegetation in North Eurasia has been performed for 1982-2006 on the basis of remote sensing data. Four meteorological parameters and one parameter, characterizing geomagnetic field disturbance level, were used for this aim. It was found out that revealed formula is adequate both for coniferous evergreen and coniferous deciduous forests for accuracy to a coefficient. The most proper parameters' combination gives the correlation coefficients ~ 0.9 between modeling parameter and original data rows. These results could solve problems of climate-forests feedbacks' investigations and be useful for dendrological aims.

Abstract:In order to predict and assess the danger from crown forest fires, it is necessary to study the thermal degradation of different forest fuels in a high-temperature environment. In this paper, the main characteristics of pyrolysis accompanied by moisture evaporation in a foliage sample of angiosperms (birch) were investigated within conditions typical for a crown forest fire. The heat and mass transfer in the forest fuel element is described by the system of non-stationary non-linear heat conduction equations with corresponding initial and boundary conditions. The considered problem is solved within the framework of the three-dimensional statement by the finite difference method. The locally one-dimensional method was used to solve three-dimensional equations for heat conduction. The simple iteration method was applied to solve nonlinear effects caused by the forest fuel pyrolysis and moisture evaporation. The fourth kind of boundary conditions are applicable at the interface between the sub-areas. Software implementation of the mathematical model is performed in the high-level programming language Delphi in the RAD Studio software. The characteristic changes in the sample temperature field and the phase composition under high-temperature exposure from a forest fire are presented. The induction period of the thermal decomposition of dry organic matter in the sample was determined. Recommendations are made about key features of accounting for the pyrolysis and evaporation processes when predicting forest fire danger. The research results can be used in the development and improvement of systems for predicting forest fire danger and environmental consequences of the forest fires.

Abstract:The priority tasks of ecology include the development of modern systems of ecological monitoring and modeling of forest ecosystems, one of the main integral indicators of the functioning of which is the seasonal dynamics of stand transpiration. Most modern transpiration models are based on remote sensing data and operate on a very large scale. There are single models based on direct measurement of sap flow, which are difficult for ecologically sound geoinformation extrapolation on the territory of forest biogeocenoses with an area of several hectares, which is especially important for urban forest parks. The model we are planning should overcome these shortcomings. The article presents an approach to the assessment and modeling of the transpiration of the forest ecosystem stand according to the data of IoT monitoring systems in the Petrovsko-Razumovskoye integrated Nature reserve. Modeling Analysis of the Productivity of Artificial Spruce Stands with Different Planting Schemes

Abstract:One way to increase the productivity of artificial forestation is to control the density and position of trees relative to each other. Thus, the optimal planting schemes to obtain the maximum stock of wood of a given diameter must be found. A simulation model was used for a comparative analysis of the productivity of spruce stands with different planting schemes. Rectangular and square planting patterns with different initial forest-stand densities are considered. The stock of small (trunk diameter 6–13 cm), medium (14–23 cm), and large (over 24 cm) wood was calculated with respect to the row spacing and the pitch of trees planted on a site 40 × 40 m in size. In the selection of the optimal planting scheme, it is taken into account that there are various seedlings that differ in competitiveness. It is shown that the square planting scheme is optimal when the initial number of seedlings is the same. The optimal distances between trees for the growth of small, medium, and large wood with a square planting pattern were 1.4 × 1.4 m, 2.4 × 2.4 m, and 4 × 4 m, respectively. The spruce stand reached the specified qualitative characteristics corresponding to small, medium, and large wood in 36, 68, and 155 years. Thus, it has been shown that different initial planting densities are required in order to obtain the maximum wood stock for different size classes: the larger the grown wood is, the lower is the optimal planting density.

Abstract:Natural disturbances, such as fire and insect outbreaks, play important roles in natural forest dynamics, which are characterized over long time scales by changes in stand composition and structure. Individual-based forest simulators could help explain and predict the response of forest ecosystems to different disturbances, silvicultural treatments, or environmental stressors. This study evaluated the ability of the SORTIE-ND simulator to reproduce post-disturbance dynamics of the boreal mixedwoods of eastern Canada. In 1991 and 2009, we sampled all trees (including seedlings and saplings) in 431 (256 m2) plots located in the Lake Duparquet Research and Teaching Forest (western Quebec). These plots were distributed in stands originating from seven wildfires that occurred between 1760 and 1944, and which represented a chronosequence of post-disturbance stand development. We used the 1991 inventory data to parameterize the model, and simulated short- to long-term natural dynamics of post-fire stands in both the absence and presence of a spruce budworm outbreak. We compared short-term simulated stand composition and structure with those observed in 2009 using a chronosequence approach. The model successfully generated the composition and structure of empirical observations. In long-term simulations, species dominance of old-growth forests was not accurately estimated, due to possible differences in stand compositions following wildfires and to differences in stand disturbance histories. Mid- to long-term simulations showed that the secondary disturbance incurred by spruce budworm did not cause substantial changes in early successional stages while setting back the successional dynamics of middle-aged stands and accelerating the dominance of white cedar in late-successional post-fire stands. We conclude that constructing a model with appropriate information regarding stand composition and disturbance history considerably increases the strength and accuracy of the model to reproduce the natural dynamics of post-disturbance boreal mixedwoods.

Abstract:Familiarity with a simulation platform can seduce modellers into accepting untested assumptions for convenience of implementation. These assumptions may have consequences greater than commonly suspected, and it is important that modellers remain mindful of assumptions and remain diligent with sensitivity testing. Familiarity with a technique can lead to complacency, and alternative approaches and software can reveal untested assumptions. Visual modelling environments based on system dynamics may help to make critical assumptions more evident by offering an accessible visual overview and empowering a focus on representational rather than computational efficiency. This capacity is illustrated using a cohort-based forest growth model developed for mixed species forest. The alternative model implementation revealed that untested assumptions in the original model could have substantial influence on simulated outcomes. An important implication is that modellers should remain conscious of all assumptions, consider alternative implementations that reveal assumptions more clearly, and conduct sensitivity tests to inform decisions.
