Abstract:Environmental factors have been implicated in the etiology of autism spectrum disorder (ASD); however, the role of heavy metals has not been fully defined. This study investigated whether blood levels of mercury, arsenic, cadmium, and lead of children with ASD significantly differ from those of age- and sex-matched controls. One hundred eighty unrelated children with ASD and 184 healthy controls were recruited. Data showed that the children with ASD had significantly ( p < 0.001) higher levels of mercury and arsenic and a lower level of cadmium. The levels of lead did not differ significantly between the groups. The results of this study are consistent with numerous previous studies, supporting an important role for heavy metal exposure, particularly mercury, in the etiology of ASD. It is desirable to continue future research into the relationship between ASD and heavy metal exposure.

Abstract:Many neurodevelopmental abnormalities are connected to autism spectrum disorder (ASD), which can result in inflammation and elevated cytokine levels due to immune system dysregulation. Interleukin (IL)-17 A and IL-22 have been linked to the regulation of host defense against pathogens at the barrier surface, the regeneration of injured tissue, and the integration of the neurological, endocrine, and immune systems. Several studies have investigated the possible connection between IL-17 A and ASD as well as the severity of behavioral symptoms, but few of them included IL-22.

Abstract:Results of studies on peripheral blood levels of homocysteine (Hcy) in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are inconsistent, and conclusions from two previous meta-analyses on this subject published in 2012 are already outdated. Therefore, we conducted an updated systematic review and meta-analysis to quantitatively summarize the peripheral blood Hcy data in children with ASD compared with healthy controls (HC). We searched PubMed, EMBASE, PsycINFO, PsycARTICLES, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library databases from inception to September 2019 for eligible studies, with no language restriction. Using random-effects model, we computed summary statistics. Thirty-one studies (3304 participants including 1641 cases) were included. The pooled results showed that the peripheral blood Hcy levels were significantly elevated in children with ASD when compared to HC (Hedges's g = 0.56, 95% CI = 0.36 to 0.76, P < 0.001). By sensitivity analyses, we confirmed that our results were quite robust. Additionally, no publication bias was observed in this meta-analysis. In conclusion, our study support the association of increased circulating Hcy levels with ASD in children, and the involvement of Hcy in the occurrence of ASD. However, in view of the significant between-study heterogeneity, the conclusions should be interpreted cautiously and more investigation is required.

Abstract:Hypovitaminosis D has been recognized as a risk factor for autism spectrum disorder (ASD); however, its mechanism remains unclear. Amino acid metabolism is involved in the related factors of ASD, such as neurotransmitters, oxidative stress, and immune dysfunction. Vitamin D not only regulates the activity of the amino acid transport system, but is also closely related to amino acids in the regulation of immunity and oxidative stress. To investigate the possible mechanisms by which vitamin D may influence ASD, the correlation between blood amino acids and serum 25(OH)D levels of 506 children (411 males and 95 females) with ASD were retrospectively analyzed, and possible related pathways were determined via a literature review. According to the results, alanine, arginine, glycine, ornithine, glutamine and histidine were found to be significantly negatively correlated with serum 25(OH)D levels (P < 0.05). Glycine and ornithine were also found to be influenced by age, and glutamine levels were different in male and female children with ASD. In addition, there were differences in alanine levels in different BMI levels. However, after adjusting for the influences of these factors in the regression equation, it was found that 25(OH)D was associated with the identified 6 amino acids (P < 0.05). Therefore, vitamin D may influence ASD through the cross-pathways of these amino acids (i.e. glutamine-gamma aminobutyric acid balance, oxidative stress, and immune dysfunction). This conclusion may provide some ideas for further investigation of the effect of vitamin D on ASD.

Reduction of essential amino acid levels and sex-specific alterations in serum amino acid concentration profiles in children with autism spectrum disorder

Abstract:Background: Existing evidence has shown that metabolic disturbances may be involved in the pathological process of autism spectrum disorder(ASD). This study aimed to investigate the alterations of serum amino acid concentration profiles in Chinese Han children with ASD. Methods: Serum amino acid levels were measured using tandem mass spectrometry in 60 children with ASD and 30 typically developing (TD) controls. The Chinese Wechsler Young Children Scale of Intelligence (C-WYCSI) was used to evaluate the ASD subjects' intelligence quotient (IQ). Results: The serum levels of essential amino acids and some non-essential amino acids (glutamine, glycine, alanine, citrulline, cysteine, serine, tyrosine, and proline) in the ASD group were significantly lower than those in controls. The serum glutamate/glutamine (Glu/Gln) ratio was elevated in the ASD PIQ≥70 group, while serum levels of alanine, cysteine, phenylalanine, methionine and proline were significantly higher in male children with ASD than that in the female group. Conclusion: The study revealed that children with ASD exhibit alterations in the serum levels of certain amino acids, and the divergence can be sex-related or associated with different cognitive function, which might provide clues for further etiological research of ASD.

Abstract:Background: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental disorder. Folate has been demonstrated to be associated with ASD. However, current studies on the correlation between folate and symptoms of children with ASD have inconsistent conclusions, use mainly small samples, and lack age-stratified analysis. This study aimed to explore the association between serum folate and symptoms of autistic children at different age groups from a multi-center perspective. Methods: We enrolled 1,300 children with ASD and 1,246 typically developing (TD) children under 7 years old from 13 cities in China. The Autism Behavior Checklist (ABC), Social Responsiveness Scale (SRS), and Childhood autism rating scale (CARS) were used to evaluate the symptoms of children with ASD. China neuropsychological and Behavior Scale-Revision 2016 (CNBS-R2016) scale was used to evaluate the neurodevelopment of children with ASD. Serum folate was measured by chemiluminescence assay in the two groups. Results: The serum folate levels of children with ASD were lower than that of TD children. In terms of core symptoms of ASD, we found that the serum folate levels were not associated with ABC, SRS, and CARS scores in ASD children of all ages but negatively associated with communication warning behavior scores of CNBS-R2016 in ASD children aged three and under. Concerning development quotients, it was at the age of three and under that serum folate levels were positively associated with gross motor, fine motor, language, and general quotient of ASD children. These ASD children aged three and under were further divided into two groups according to the median of serum folate (14.33 ng/mL); we found that compared to ASD children with folate ≤ 14.33 ng/mL, those with folate >14.33 ng/mL had lower communication warning behavior score and higher gross motor, fine motor, adaptive behavior, language, person-social, and general development quotients. Conclusion: We found that serum folate status was primarily associated with the neurodevelopment of children with ASD aged three and under. Furthermore, relatively higher serum folate levels may be more beneficial for children with ASD. Our results suggest that folate level should be paid more attention in ASD children, especially in early life, to better promote the intervention of ASD children.
Inferring the genetic effects of serum homocysteine and vitamin B levels on autism spectral disorder through Mendelian randomization

Abstract:PurposeThe previous studies have suggested that serum homocysteine (Hcy) and vitamin B levels are potentially related to autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, the causality between their concentrations and ASD risk remains unclear. To elucidate this genetic association, we used a Mendelian randomization (MR) design.MethodsFor this MR analysis, 47 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs)—13 related to Hcy, 13 to folate, 14 to vitamin B6, and 7 to vitamin B12—were obtained from a large-scale Genome-Wide Association Studies (GWAS) database and employed as instrumental variables (IVs). Our study used three approaches to calculate the MR estimates, including inverse-variance weighted (IVW) method, MR-Egger method, and weighted median (WM) method. Among these, the IVW method served as our primary MR method. False discovery rate (FDR) was implemented to correct for multiple comparisons. We also performed a series of sensitivity analyses, including Cochran’s Q test, MR-Egger’s intercept, MR-PRESSO, leave-one-out analysis, and the funnel plot.ResultsUnivariable Mendelian randomization (UVMR) analysis revealed a statistical association between serum vitamin B12 levels and ASD risk (OR = 1.68, 95% CI 1.12–2.52, P = 0.01) using the IVW method. However, neither the WM method (OR = 1.57, 95% CI 0.93–2.66, P = 0.09) nor the MR-Egger method (OR = 2.33, 95% CI 0.48–11.19, P = 0.34) was significantly association with higher levels of serum vitamin B12 and ASD risk. Additionally, we found no evidence of causal relationships between serum levels of vitamin B6, folate, Hcy, and ASD risk. After correcting for the FDR, the causality between serum vitamin B12 levels and ASD risk remained significant (q value = 0.0270). Multivariate Mendelian randomization (MVMR) analysis indicated an independent association between elevated serum vitamin B12 levels and the risk of ASD (OR = 1.74, 95% CI 1.03–2.95, P = 0.03) using the IVW method, but this finding was inconsistent when using the WM method (OR = 1.73, 95% CI 0.89–3.36, P = 0.11) and MR-Egger method (OR = 1.60, 95% CI 0.95–2.71, P = 0.08). Furthermore, no causal associations were observed for serum levels of vitamin B6 and folate in MVMR analysis. Sensitivity analyses confirmed that these results were reliable.ConclusionOur study indicated that elevated serum vitamin B12 levels might increase the risk of ASD. The potential implications of our results for ASD risk warrant validation in randomized clinical trials.

Abstract:Abstract Vitamin and fatty acid deficiency in children diagnosed with autism has been linked to the etiology and course of the disease but the results have been inconsistent. In our work, we present a narrative review, which includes 20 observational studies that provide data on the blood levels of vitamin D, folate, or fatty acids of children diagnosed with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder—AG group), and of a control group (children without this disorder—CG group). The main characteristics and results are presented in a summary table. Of the 20 above-mentioned studies, a meta-analysis of vitamin D and folate levels was carried out in 14 of them, with a total of 2269 children (AG = 1159, CG = 1110). Vitamin D levels were lower in AG compared to CG: SMD, 95% CI = − 0.83 [− 1.15, − 0.50]. In terms of folate levels, a total of 299 children (AG = 148, CG = 151) were analyzed, finding no significant differences with the control group: SMD, 95% CI = − 0.16 [− 0.63, 0.32]. Only one study that provided data on fatty acids in children with ASD was included in the review although it was not possible to include it in the meta-analysis. We conclude that the nutritional status (vitamin and fatty acid levels) of patients diagnosed with ASD should be taken into account, as correct adjustment of these levels—may produce an improvement in the course of the disease and could also reduce the risk of its development.

Abstract:Background Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder in which underlying etiological factors remains unclear. The important environmental factors associated with ASD, include neuroinflammation, hypoxia, and oxidative stress . HIF-1α and apelin are biochemical markers that play important roles in neuroinflammation, hypoxia and oxidative stress. The aim of this study is to determine whether serum HIF-1α and apelin levels differ between children and adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and healthy controls. Methods This cross-sectional study included 30 children and adolescents with ASD and 30 healthy controls. HIF-1α and apelin serum levels were measured using commercial enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kits. Autism symptom severity was evaluated using Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS). HIF-1α and apelin serum levels were compared between groups. Additionally, correlations between HIF-1α and apelin serum levels and sociodemographic-clinical variables (age, BMI, CARS total score, ASD severity, psychiatric medication use, psychiatric comorbidity, NLR, SII) were evaluated in the ASD group. Results Serum HIF-1α and apelin levels were statistically significantly higher in the ASD group (p = 0.044, p = 0.041 respectively). Serum apelin levels were negatively correlated with age (r = −0.430, p = 0.018). Serum HIF-1α levels were positively correlated with NLR (r = 0.627 p < 0.001) and SII (r = 0.609 p < 0.001). There was positive correlation between serum apelin levels and NLR (r = 0.525 p = 0.003) and SII (r = 559 p = 0.002). Conclusion These results suggest that, HIF-1α and apelin may play a potential role in the etiopathogenesis of ASD. Further studies on the subject are needed to reveal the causality between HIF-1α, apelin and ASD.

Abstract:Background and Objectives: It is known that inflammatory processes play a role in the pathogenesis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). It is also reported that immune activation induces the kynurenine pathway (KP), as known as the tryptophan destruction pathway. In our study, we aimed to investigate whether the serum levels of KP products and interleukin (IL)-6 activating indolamine 2-3 dioxygenase (IDO) enzyme are different in healthy developing children and children with ASD. Materials and Methods: Forty-three ASD children aged 2-9 were included in this study. Forty-two healthy developing children, similar to the patient group in terms of age and gender, were selected as the control group. Serum levels of kynurenic acid, kynurenine, quinolinic acid and IL-6 were analyzed using the ELISA method. ASD severity was evaluated with the Autism Behavior Checklist (ABC). Results: The mean age of children with ASD was 42.4 ± 20.5 months, and that of healthy controls was 48.1 ± 15.8 months. While the serum levels of kynurenic acid, kynurenine and interleukin-6 were higher in the group with ASD (p < 0.05), there was no significant difference (p > 0.05) in terms of the quinolinic acid level. There was no significant difference between the ABC total and subscale scores of children with ASD and biochemical parameters (p > 0.05). Conclusions: We conclude that these biomarkers must be measured in all ASD cases. They may be important for the diagnosis of ASD.
[Association Between Serum Trace Elements and Core Symptoms in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder: a National Multicenter Survey].

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To study the association of serum levels of trace elements with core symptoms in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).METHODS:From September 2018 to September 2019, an investigation was performed for 1 020 children with ASD and 1 038 healthy children matched for age and sex in the outpatient service of grade A tertiary hospitals and special education institutions in 13 cities of China. Autism Behavior Checklist (ABC), Social Responsiveness Scale (SRS), and Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS) were used to assess the core symptoms of the children with ASD. The inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry was used to measure serum levels of trace elements magnesium, iron, copper, and zinc.RESULTS:The children with ASD had significantly lower serum levels of magnesium, copper, and zinc than the healthy children (P < 0.05). The children with severe ASD had significantly lower serum levels of magnesium and zinc than those with mild-to-moderate ASD (P < 0.05). The results of partial correlation analysis showed that serum magnesium level was negatively correlated with the total score of ABC and the score of communication (r=-0.318 and -0.282 respectively; P 0.001), and serum zinc level was negatively correlated with the total score of ABC and the scores of communication and somatic movement (r=-0.221, -0.270, and -0.207 respectively; P < 0.001).CONCLUSIONS:The serum levels of magnesium and zinc may be associated with core symptoms in children with ASD, which requires further studies. The nutritional status of trace elements should be monitored for children with ASD in clinical practice.
Trace elements in children with autism spectrum disorder: A meta-analysis based on case-control studies

Abstract:Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a common childhood neurodevelopmental disorder that may be related to trace elements. However, reports on the relationship between them are still inconsistent. In this article, we conducted a meta-analysis on this issue. We searched the PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane databases as of November 15, 2019. A random-effects model was used, and subgroups of studies were analyzed using samples of different measurements. Twenty-two original articles were identified (18 trace elements, including a total of 1014 children with ASD and 999 healthy controls). In autistic children, the overall levels of barium (Ba), mercury (Hg), lithium (Li), and lead (Pb) were higher. There were significant differences in the levels of copper (Cu) in the hair and serum between autistic children and the control group. The levels of Hg, Li, Pb and selenium (Se) in the hair of autistic children were higher than those of healthy children, while the levels of zinc (Zn) in the blood were lower. Excessive exposure to toxic heavy metals and inadequate intake of essential metal elements may be associated with ASD. Preventing excessive exposure to toxic metals and correcting poor dietary behaviors may be beneficial for the prevention and treatment of the disease.

Interaction and association between multiple vitamins and social adaptability and severity of autism: A large‐scale retrospective study from China

Abstract:Since children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often exhibit selective eating behaviors, it is generally believed that they may have abnormal nutrient structure, leading to aberrant concentrations of some serum vitamins. However, previous studies on serum vitamins in individuals with ASD are mixed. Additionally, the interaction and association between multiple serum vitamin and ASD‐related symptoms remain unclear. This study utilized a cross‐sectional survey with a large sample size (n = 1235) from China to clarify previous mixed findings, and examine the interaction and association between multiple serum vitamins (including folic acid [FA], vitamin A [VA], vitamin E [VE], vitamin B12 [VB12], and vitamin D [VD]) and social adaptability and symptom severity in children with ASD. Findings found that symptom severity was negatively associated with concentrations of serum VA, VE, VB12, and VD; while, social adaptability was significantly associated with the natural log‐transformed concentrations of FA and VB12. Finding also revealed the interaction of VA and VE on the association between both vitamins and severity of ASD symptoms, as well as the interaction of VB12 and FA on the association between both vitamins and social adaptability. In particular, the combination of low concentration of VA and high concentration of VE is associated with the lowest risk of being "severely autistic"; while, the combination of low concentration of FA and high concentration of VB12 is associated with the lowest risk of being "poor social adaptability". This study offers the evidence for the requirement of considering multiple vitamins comprehensively, as well as valuable references for revealing the association between vitamin disparities and food selectivity in children with ASD.

Abstract:Background: Supplementation of folic acid by pregnant mothers is thought to lower the risk of autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) in the offspring. Folic acid is taken up by cells via receptors with high affinity for folate and reduced folic acid derivatives. However, this is blocked by the presence of folate receptor autoantibodies (FRAA). Cerebral FRAA have been detected with high frequency in children with ASDs, suggesting the existence of a link between folic acid uptake and disease aetiology. Methods: We investigated the frequency of FRAA in serum samples from 40 children with ASDs and 42 gender- and age-matched children with typical development (TD). Serum FRAA concentrations were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Results: We found a significant difference in the frequency of serum FRAA in the two study cohorts. Serum FRAA were present in 77.5% (31/40) of children with ASDs compared with 54.8% (23/42) of TD children (p = 0.03746, Fischer's exact test). Thus, serum FRAA are more prevalent in children with ASDs than in TD children. Conclusions: Our data suggest that children with ASDs may have defects in folic acid absorption that play a role in the onset of ASDs.

Abstract:Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) affect 1% of children. Although there is no cure, early diagnosis and behavioral intervention can relieve the symptoms. The clinical heterogeneity of ASD has created a need for improved sensitive and specific laboratory diagnostic methods. Liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS)-based analysis of the metabolome has shown great potential to uncover biomarkers for complex diseases such as ASD. Here, we used a two-step discovery-validation approach to identify potential novel metabolic biomarkers for ASD. Urine samples from 57 children with ASD and 81 matched children with typical development (TD) were analyzed by LS-MS/MS to assess differences in urinary amino acids and their metabolites (referred to as UAA indicators). A total of 63 UAA indicators were identified, of which 21 were present at significantly different levels in the urine of ASD children compared with TD children. Of these 21, the concentrations of 19 and 10 were higher and lower, respectively, in the urine of ASD children compared with TD children. Using support vector machine modeling and receiver operating characteristic curve analysis, we identified a panel of 7 UAA indicators that discriminated between the samples from ASD and TD children (lysine, 2-aminoisobutyric acid, 5-hydroxytryptamine, proline, aspartate, arginine/ornithine, and 4-hydroxyproline). Among the significantly changed pathways in ASD children were the ornithine/urea cycle (decreased levels of the excitatory amino acid aspartate [p = 2.15 × 10-10] and increased arginine/ornithine [p = 5.21 × 10-9]), tryptophan metabolism (increased levels of inhibitory 5-hydroxytryptamine p = 3.62 × 10-9), the methionine cycle (increased methionine sulfoxide [p = 1.46 × 10-10] and decreased homocysteine [p = 2.73 × 10-7]), and lysine metabolism (reduced lysine [p = 7.8 × 10-9], α-aminoadipic acid [p = 1.16 × 10-9], and 5-aminovaleric acid [p = 1.05 × 10-5]). Collectively, the data presented here identify a possible imbalance between excitatory and inhibitory amino acid metabolism in ASD children. The significantly altered UAA indicators could therefore be potential diagnostic biomarkers for ASD.

Abstract:Gut microbiota and their metabolic products might play important roles in regulating the pathogenesis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The purpose of this study was to characterize gut microbiota and serum amino acid metabolome profiles in children with ASD. A non-randomized controlled study was carried out to analyze the alterations in the intestinal microbiota and their metabolites in patients with ASD (n = 30) compared with neurotypical controls (NC) (n = 30) by metagenomic sequencing to define the gut microbiota community and liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (LC/MS) analysis to characterize the metabolite profiles. Compared with children in the NC group, those in the ASD group showed lower richness, higher evenness, and an altered microbial community structure. At the class level, Deinococci and Holophagae were significantly lower in children with ASD compared with TD. At the phylum level, Deinococcus -Thermus was significantly lower in children with ASD compared with TD. In addition, the functional properties (such as galactose metabolism) displayed significant differences between the ASD and NC groups. Five dominant altered species were identified and analyzed (LDA score > 2.0, P < 0.05), including Subdoligranulum , Faecalibacterium _praushitzii, Faecalibacterium , Veillonellaceae , and Rumminococcaceae . The peptides/nickel transport system was the main metabolic pathway involved in the differential species in the ASD group. Decreased ornithine levels and elevated valine levels may increase the risk of ASD through a metabolic pathway known as the nickel transport system. The microbial metabolism in diverse environments was negatively correlated with phascolarctobacterium succinatutens . Our study provides novel insights into compositional and functional alterations in the gut microbiome and metabolite profiles in ASD and the underlying mechanisms between metabolite and ASD.

Abstract:This study aims to identify potential correlations of the severity of symptoms of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) with serum nutritional levels, body composition indicators, diet partiality, and sleep disturbances. The cohort of this cross-sectional study included 120 children with ASD and 110 typically developing (TD) children to assess symptoms of ASD, and to measure serum levels of vitamins and minerals and the body composition values. Diet partiality and sleep disturbances were assessed by administering questionnaires. The serum levels of folic acid, copper, and vitamin B were lower in children with ASD than in TD children, while magnesium and homocysteine were higher (p < 0.05). Children with ASD had greater chest circumference, abdominal skinfold thickness, and body mass index (BMI) than TD children (p < 0.05), and higher prevalences of diet partiality and sleep disturbances (p < 0.001). Lower vitamin A levels and higher vitamin D levels were related to social impairment in children with ASD. Moreover, there were significantly positive correlations of BMI, chest circumference, diet partiality, and sleep disturbances with severity of ASD symptoms (p < 0.05). Collectively, rational nutritional supplementation, dietary management, and behavioral interventions are essential for children with ASD.

Abstract:Folate receptor autoantibody (FRAA) has caught increasing attention since its discovery in biological fluids of patients with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), but quantification and understanding of its function are still in their infancy. In this study, we aimed to quantify serum binding-FRAA and explore its relation with serum folate, vitamin B 12 (VB 12 ) and ferritin. We quantitated serum binding-FRAA in 132 ASD children and 132 typically-developing (TD) children, as well as serum levels of folate, VB 12 and ferritin. The results showed that serum binding-FRAA in the ASD group was significantly lower than that in the TD group (p 0.05). However, there was significant difference in boys between these two groups, not girls. Additionally, the combination of nitrite and binding-FRAA showed potential diagnostic value in patients with ASD (AUC > 0.7). Moreover, in the ASD group, the level of folate was consistent with that of binding-FRAA, whereas in the TD group, the binding-FRAA level was high when the folate level was low. Altogether, these differences revealed that the low serum FRAA in autistic children was mediated by multiple factors, which deserves more comprehensive investigation with larger population and mechanistic studies.

Abstract:This case–control study explored the associations between autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and the serum concentration of nine chemical elements in children. The study recruited 92 Chinese children with ASD and 103 typically developing individuals. Serum concentrations of nine chemical elements (calcium, iodine, iron, lithium, magnesium, potassium, selenium, strontium, and zinc) were determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES). An unconditional logistic regression model was used to analyze the associations between the serum concentrations of the elements and the risk of ASD. After adjusting for confounders, the multivariate analysis results showed that zinc ≤ 837.70 ng/mL, potassium > 170.06 μg/mL, and strontium ≤ 52.46 ng/mL were associated with an increased risk of ASD, while selenium > 159.80 ng/mL was associated with a decreased risk of ASD. Furthermore, the degree of lithium and zinc deficiency was associated with ASD severity. The results indicated that metallomic profiles of some specific elements might play important roles in the development of ASD, a finding of scientific significance for understanding the etiology, and providing dietary guidance for certain ASD types.
