Abstract:We develop a toolbox for forcing over arbitrary models of set theory without the axiom of choice. In particular, we introduce a variant of the countable chain condition and prove an iteration theorem that applies to many classical forcings such as Cohen forcing and random algebras. Our approach sidesteps the problem that forcing with the countable chain condition can collapse $\omega_1$ by a recent result of Karagila and Schweber. Using this, we show that adding many Cohen reals and random reals leads to different theories. This result is due to Woodin. Thus one can always change the theory of the universe by forcing, just like the continuum hypothesis and its negation can be obtained by forcing over arbitrary models with choice. We further study principles stipulating that the first-order theory of the universe remains the same in all generic extension by a fixed class of forcings. Extending a result of Woodin, we show that even for very restricted classes such as the class of all finite support products of Cohen forcing or the class of all random algebras, this principle implies that all infinite cardinals have countable cofinality.

A general theory of iterated forcing using finitely additive measures

Abstract:Based on the work of Shelah, Kellner, and Tănasie (Fund. Math., 166(1-2):109-136, 2000 and Comment. Math. Univ. Carolin., 60(1):61-95, 2019), and the recent developments in the third author's master's thesis, we develop a general theory of iterated forcing using finitely additive measures. For this purpose, we introduce two new notions: on the one hand, we define a new linkedness property, called $\mu$-$\mathrm{FAM}$-linked and, on the other hand, we generalize the notion of intersection number to forcing notions, which justifies the limit steps of our iteration theory. Our theory also generalizes iterations with ultrafilters, which have played an important role in the proof of the consistency of Cichoń's maximum. We further show that any iteration constructed with our general theory preserves strong unbounded families and what we call \emph{anti-Bendixson families}, which play a central role in preserving witnesses of $\mathrm{cov}(\mathcal{N})$ of singular size (even of countable cofinality). Finally, we apply our theory to prove the consistency of a new separation of the left-hand side of Cichoń's diagram where $\mathrm{cov}(\mathcal{N})$ is possibly singular, even with countable cofinality.

Abstract:We study methods to obtain the consistency of forcing axioms, and particularly higher forcing axioms. We first force over a model with a supercompact cardinal $\theta>\kappa$ to get the consistency of the forcing axiom for $\kappa$-strongly proper forcing notions which are also $\kappa$-lattice, and then eliminate the need for large cardinals. The proof goes through a natural reflection property for $\kappa$-strongly proper forcings. We also produce a model of this forcing axiom with $2^\kappa$ arbitrarily large, and prove the inconsistency of certain natural strengthenings of the axiom.

Abstract:We present a detailed general framework to describe the forcing $\tilde{\mathbb{E}}$, defined by Kellner, Shelah and Tanăsie to prove the consistency with ZFC of an alternative order of Cichoń's maximum. Our presentation is close to the framework of tree-creature forcing notions from Horowitz and Shelah. We show that the posets in this class have strong FAM limits for intervals (in recent terminology, they are $\sigma$-FAM-linked) and, furthermore, that they also have strong ultrafilter limits for intervals.

Abstract:We define typical forcings encompassing many informal forcing arguments in bounded arithmetic and give general conditions for such forcings to produce models of the universal variant of relativized $T^1_2$. We apply this result to study the relative complexity of total (type 2) NP search problems associated to finitary combinatorial principles. Complexity theory compares such problems with respect to polynomial time many-one or Turing reductions. From a logical perspective such problems are graded according to the bounded arithmetic theories that prove their totality. The logical analogue of a reduction is to prove the totality of one problem from the totality of another. The link between the two perspectives is tight for what we call universal variants of relativized bounded arithmetics. We strengthen a theorem of Buss and Johnson (2012) that infers relative bounded depth Frege proofs of totality from polynomial time Turing reducibility. As an application of our general forcing method we derive a strong form of Riis' finitization theorem (1993). We extend it by exhibiting a simple model-theoretic property that implies independence from the universal variant of relativized $T^1_2$ plus the weak pigeonhole principle. More generally, we show that the universal variant of relativized $T^1_2$ does not prove (the totality of the total NP search problem associated to) a strong finitary combinatorial principle from a weak one. Being weak or strong are simple model-theoretic properties based on the behaviour of the principles with respect to finite structures that are only partially defined.

Abstract:We define forcing orders which add witnesses to the failure of various forms of Friedman's Property. These posets behave similarly to the forcing order adding a nonreflecting stationary set but have the advantage of allowing the construction of master conditions and thus the preservation of various large cardinal properties. We apply these new techniques to separate various instances of variants of Friedman's Problem, both between different instances at one cardinal as well as equal instances at different cardinals and en passant obtain some new results regarding the differences between ${<}\,\kappa$- and $\kappa$-strategic closure.

Abstract:We develop a forcing framework based on the idea of amalgamating language fragments into a theory with a canonical term model. We then demonstrate the usefulness of this framework by applying it to variants of the extended Namba problem, as well as to the analysis of models of certain theories with constraints in interpretation (TCIs). The foundations for a theory of TCIs and their models are laid in parallel to the development of our framework, and are of independent interest.

Abstract:For a relational structure ${\mathbb X}$ we investigate the partial order $\langle {\mathbb P} ({\mathbb X}) ,\subset \rangle$, where ${\mathbb P} ({\mathbb X}):=\{ f[X]: f\in \mathop{\rm Emb}\nolimits ({\mathbb X})\}$. Here we consider uncountable ordinals. Since $\mathop{\rm sq}\nolimits {\mathbb P} (\alpha )$ is isomorphic to the direct product $\prod _{i=1}^n (\mathop{\rm sq}\nolimits {\mathbb P} (\omega ^{\delta _i}))^{s_i}$, where $\alpha = \omega ^{\delta _n}s_n+\dots +\omega ^{\delta _1}s_1+ m$ is the Cantor normal form for $\alpha $, the analysis is reduced to the investigation of the posets of the form ${\mathbb P} (\omega ^{\delta })$. Abstract:Based on works of Saharon Shelah, Jakob Kellner, and Anda Tănasie for controlling the cardinal characteristics of the continuum in ccc forcing extensions, in the author's master's thesis was introduced a new combinatorial notion: the intersection number for forcing notions, which was used in such thesis to build a general theory of iterated forcing using finitely additive measures. In this paper, we present the definition of such a notion and prove some of its fundamental properties in detail. Additionally, we introduce a new linkedness property called $\mu$-intersection-linked, prove some of its basic properties, and provide some interesting examples.

Abstract:We show that the Proper Forcing Axiom for forcing notions of size $\aleph_1$ is consistent with the continuum being arbitrarily large. In fact, assuming $GCH$ holds and $\kappa\geq\omega_2$ is a regular cardinal, we prove that there is a proper and $\aleph_2$-c.c.\ forcing $\mathbb{P}$ giving rise to a model of this forcing axiom together with $2^{\aleph_0}=\kappa$ and which, in addition, satisfies all statements of the form $\mathcal{H}(\aleph_2)\models \forall x\exists y\varphi(x, y)$, where $\varphi(x, y)$ is a restricted formula with the property that for every $a\in \mathcal{H}(\aleph_2)$ and every inner model $M$ of $CH$ with $a\in M$ there is, in $M$, a suitably nice proper poset adding some $b$ such that $\varphi(a, b)$. In particular, $\mathbb{P}$ forces Moore's Measuring principle, Baumgartner's Axiom for $\aleph_1$-dense sets of reals, Todorčević's Open Colouring Axiom for sets of size $\aleph_1$, and Todorěvić's P-ideal Dichotomy for $\aleph_1$-generated ideals on $\omega_1$, among other statements. In particular, all these statements are simultaneously compatible with a large continuum.

Axiomatization and Forcing in Set Theory with Urelements

Abstract:In the first part of this paper, we consider several natural axioms in urelement set theory, including the Collection Principle, the Reflection Principle, the Dependent Choice scheme and its generalizations, as well as other axioms specifically concerning urelements. We prove that these axioms form a hierarchy over $\ZFCUR$ (ZFC with urelements formulated with Replacement) in terms of direct implication. The second part of the paper studies forcing over countable transitive models of $\ZFUR$. We propose a new definition of $¶$-names to address an issue with the existing approach. We then prove the fundamental theorem of forcing with urelements regarding axiom preservation. Moreover, we show that forcing can destroy and recover certain axioms within the previously established hierarchy. Finally, we demonstrate how ground model definability may fail when the ground model contains a proper class of urelements.

Abstract:This dissertation surveys several topics in the general areas of iterated forcing, infinite combinatorics and set theory of the reals. There are two parts. In the first half I consider alternative versions of the Cichoń diagram. First I show that for a wide variety of reduction concepts there is a Cichoń diagram for effective cardinal characteristics relativized to that reduction. As an application I investigate in detail the Cichoń diagram for degrees of constructibility relative to a fixed inner model of ZFC. Then I study generalizations of cardinal characteristics to the space of functions $f:\omega^\omega \to \omega^\omega$. I prove that these cardinals can be organized into two diagrams analogous to the standard Cichoń diagram, prove several independence results and investigate the relation between these cardinals and the standard cardinal invariants on omega. In the second half of the thesis I look at forcing axioms compatible with CH. First I consider Jensen's subcomplete and subproper forcing. I generalize these notions to larger classes which are (apparently) much more nicely behaved structurally. I prove iteration and preservation theorems for both classes and use these to produce many new models of the subcomplete forcing axiom. Finally I deal with dee-complete forcing and its associated axiom DCFA. Extending a well-known result of Shelah, I show that if a tree of height $\omega_1$ with no branch can be embedded into an $\omega_1$-tree, possibly with uncountable branches, then it can be specialized without adding reals. As a consequence I give a fleshed out proof that DCFA implies there are no Kurepa trees, even if CH fails.

Abstract:Let $\mathsf{KP}$ denote Kripke-Platek Set Theory and let $\mathsf{M}$ be the weak set theory obtained from $\mathsf{ZF}$ by removing the collection scheme, restricting separation to $\Delta_0$-formulae and adding an axiom asserting that every set is contained in a transitive set ($\mathsf{TCo}$). A result due to Kaufmann shows that every countable model, $\mathcal{M}$, of $\mathsf{KP}+\Pi_n\textsf{-Collection}$ has a proper $\Sigma_{n+1}$-elementary end extension. Here we show that there are limits to the amount of the theory of $\mathcal{M}$ that can be transferred to the end extensions that are guaranteed by Kaufmann's Theorem. Using admissible covers and the Barwise Compactness Theorem, we show that if $\mathcal{M}$ is a countable model $\mathsf{KP}+\Pi_n\textsf{-Collection}+\Sigma_{n+1}\textsf{-Foundation}$ and $T$ is a recursive theory that holds in $\mathcal{M}$, then there exists a proper $\Sigma_n$-elementary end extension of $\mathcal{M}$ that satisfies $T$. We use this result to show that the theory $\mathsf{M}+\Pi_n\textsf{-Collection}+\Pi_{n+1}\textsf{-Foundation}$ proves $\Sigma_{n+1}\textsf{-Separation}$.

Abstract:We bring forward a logical system of transition algebras that enhances many-sorted first-order logic using features from dynamic logics. The sentences we consider include compositions, unions, and transitive closures of transition relations, which are treated similarly to the actions used in dynamic logics in order to define necessity and possibility operators. This leads to a higher degree of expressivity than that of many-sorted first-order logic. For example, one can finitely axiomatize both the finiteness and the reachability of models, neither of which are ordinarily possible in many-sorted first-order logic. We introduce syntactic entailment and study basic properties such as compactness and completeness, showing that the latter does not hold when standard finitary proof rules are used. Consequently, we define proof rules having both finite and countably infinite premises, and we provide conditions under which completeness can be proved. To that end, we generalize the forcing method introduced in model theory by Robinson from a single signature to a category of signatures, and we apply it to obtain a completeness result for signatures that are at most countable.

Abstract:Continuing \cite{GitJir22}, we develop a version of Extender-based Magidor-Radin forcing where there are no extenders on the top ordinal. As an application, we provide another approach to obtain a failure of SCH on a club subset of an inaccessible cardinal, and a model where the cardinal arithmetic behaviors are different on stationary classes, whose union is the club, is provided. The cardinals and the cofinalities outside the clubs are not affected by the forcings.
