Abstract:The Coulomb-dissociation cross section for the process B-8 --> Be-7 + p in the field of Pb-208 was measured at E(B-8) = 46.5 A MeV. The Be-7(p,gamma)B-8 cross section relevant to the high-energy B-8 solar-neutrino production was extracted at E(C.M.) = 0.6 - 1.7 MeV. Two theoretical models on the structure of 8B were used to evaluate possible corrections due to M1 and E2 admixtures to the dominant E1 cross sections. Their overall effect is shown to be small regardless of the choice of the models. The present result is consistent with the results of the direct measurements of Filippone et al. and Vaughn et al. within errors. This result suggests further studies with the Coulomb-dissociation method to extract astrophysical S-17 factor at similar to 20 keV relevant to the high-energy solar-neutrino flux.
The State Be7 in the Core of the Sun and the Solar Neutrino Flux

Abstract:The exact ionization state of Be7 in the solar core is crucial for the precise prediction of the solar B8 neutrino flux. We therefore examine the effect of pressure ionization on the ionization state of Be7 and all elements with 12 >= Z >= 4. We show that under the conditions prevailing in the solar core, one has to consider the effect of the nearest neighbor on the electronic structure of a given ion. To this goal, we first solve the Schroedinger and then the Kohn-Sham equations for an ion immersed in a dense plasma under conditions for which the mean interparticle distance is smaller than the Debye radius. The question of which boundary conditions should be imposed on the wave function is discussed, examined and found to be crucial. Contrary to previous estimates showing that Beryllium is partially ionized, we find that it is fully ionized. As a consequence, the predicted rate of the Be7 + e- reaction is reduced by 20-30%, depending on the exact solar model. Since Be7 is a trace element, its total production is controlled by the unchanged He4+He3 reaction rate, and its destruction is determined by the rate of electron capture. As the latter rate decreases when the Beryllium is fully ionized (relative to the case of partially ionized Be), the estimate for the abundance of Be7 increases and with it the B8 neutrino flux. The increase in phi_nu(B8) is by about 20-30%. The neutrino flux due to Be7 electron capture remains effectively unchanged because the change in the rate is compensated for by a change in the abundance. Hence the prediction for the ratio of phi_nu(B8) / phi_nu(Be7) changes as well.

Abstract:The 7Be(p,gamma)8B reaction is one of the major source of uncertainties in estimating the 8B solar neutrino flux and is critical for undertsanding the Solar Neutrino Problem and neutrinos. The main source of uncertainty is the existence of conflicting data with different absolute normalization. Attempts to measure this reaction rate with 7Be beams are under way by the UConn-LLN collaboration, and we discuss a newly emerging method to extract this cross section from the Coulomb dissociation of the radioactive beam of 8B. We discuss some of the issues relevant for this study including the question of the E2 contribution to the Coulomb dissociation process which was measured to be small. The Coulomb dissociation appears to provide a viable alternative method for measuring the 7Be(p,gamma)8B reaction rate, with a weighted average of the RIKEN1, RIKEN2 and GSI1 published results of S17(0) = 19.4 +/- 1.3 eV-b.

Abstract:We discuss microscopic cluster model descriptions of two solar nuclear reactions, Be7(p,gamma)B8 and He3(He3,2p)He4. The low-energy reaction cross section of Be7(p,gamma)B8, which determines the high-energy solar neutrino flux, is constrained by Be7 and B8 observables. Our results show that a small value of the zero-energy cross section is rather unlikely. In He3(He3,2p)He4 we study the effects of a possible virtual state on the cross section. Although, we have found no indication for such a state so far, its existence cannot be ruled out yet. We calculate the He3(He3,2p)He4 and H3(H3,2n)He4 cross sections in a continuum-discretized coupled channel approximation, and find a good general agreement with the data.

Abstract:We present a many-channel microscopic model that extends the three-cluster model previously formulated by Vasilevsky et al. [ Nucl. Phys. A 824 , 37 (2009)]. This extended model incorporates multiple three-cluster configurations, which are subsequently reduced to a comprehensive set of binary channels. These channels dictate the dynamics of various nuclear processes and the resonance structure of a compound nucleus across a broad energy spectrum. The application of this model focuses on investigating the nature of high-energy resonance states in Be9 and B9 , as well as the astrophysical S factors for the reactions Li7(d,n)αα and Be7(d,p)αα , particularly pertinent to the cosmological lithium problem. Parametrization of resonance states is performed across a wide range of total angular momenta and includes states of both positive and negative parity. Dominant decay channels are identified for each resonance state. Detailed analysis of astrophysical S factors resulting from deuteron interactions with Li7 and Be7 is conducted within an energy range from zero to 2 MeV. Four exit channels in Be9 [Be8(0+)+n, Be8(2+)+n, He5(3/2−)+α, He5(1/2−)+α] and four in B9 [Be8(0+)+p, Be8(2+)+p, Li5(3/2−)+α, Li5(1/2−)+α] are considered. A clear hierarchy of reactions is established for the energy range 0≤E<1.0 MeV. Notably, reactions Li7+d=Be8(0+)+n and Be7+d=Be8(0+)+p substantially dominate over all other reactions within this energy range. Abstract:The existence of an exotic long-lived negatively charged massive particle, i.e., X-, during big bang nucleosynthesis can affect primordial light element abundances. Especially, the final abundance of 7Li, mainly originating from the electron capture of 7Be, has been suggested to reduce by the 7Be destruction via the radiative X- capture of 7Be followed by the radiative proton capture of the bound state of 7Be and X- (7BeX). We suggest a new route of 7BeX formation, that is the 7Be charge exchange at the reaction of 7Be3+ ion and X-. The formation rate depends on the number fraction of 7Be3+ ion, the charge exchange cross section of 7Be3+, and the probability that produced excited states 7BeX* are converted to the ground state. We estimate respective quantities affecting the 7BeX formation rate, and find that this reaction pathway can be more important than ordinary radiative recombination of 7Be and X-. The effect of the charge exchange reaction is then shown in a latest nuclear reaction network calculation. Quantum physical model calculations for related reactions are needed to precisely estimate the efficiency of this pathway in future.

Abstract:Recent activity in solving the 'lithium problem' in big bang nucleosynthesis has focused on the role that putative resonances may play in resonance-enhanced destruction of 7Li. Particular attention has been paid to the reactions involving the 9B compound nuclear system, d+7Be->9B. These reactions are analyzed via the multichannel, two-body unitary R-matrix method using code (EDA) developed by Hale and collaborators. We employ much of the known elastic and reaction data, in a four-channel treatment. The data include elastic 3He+6Li differential cross sections from 0.7 to 2.0 MeV, integrated reaction cross sections for energies from 0.7 to 5.0 MeV for 6Li(3He,p)8Be* and from 0.4 to 5.0 MeV for the 6Li(3He,d)7Be reaction. Capture data have been added to an earlier analysis with integrated cross section measurements from 0.7 to 0.825 MeV for 6Li(3He,gamma)9B. The resulting resonance parameters are compared with tabulated values, and previously unidentified resonances are noted. Our results show that there are no near d+7Be threshold resonances with widths that are 10's of keV and reduce the likelihood that a resonance-enhanced mass-7 destruction mechanism, as suggested in recently published work, can explain the 7Li problem.

Ab initio calculation of the $^3$He$(α,γ)^7$Be astrophysical S factor with chiral two- and three-nucleon forces

Abstract:The $^3$He$(\alpha,\gamma)^7$Be radiative capture reaction plays a key role in the creation of elements in stars as well as in the production of solar neutrinos, the observation of which is one of the main tools to study the properties of our sun. Since accurate experimental measurements of this fusion cross section at solar energies are difficult due to the strong Coulomb repulsion between the reactants, the onus falls on theory to provide a robust means for extrapolating from the region where experimental data is available down to the desired astrophysical regime. We present the first microscopic calculations of $^3$He$(\alpha,\gamma)^7$Be with explicit inclusion of three-nucleon forces. Our prediction of the astrophysical $S$ factor qualitatively agrees with experimental data. We further incorporate experimental bound-state and scattering information in our calculation to arrive at a more quantitative description. This process reveals that our current model lacks sufficient repulsion in the $1/2^+$ channel of our model space to simultaneously reproduce elastic-scattering data. This deficit suggests that $^3$He$(\alpha,\gamma)^7$Be probes aspects of the nuclear force that are not currently well-constrained.

Triple-$α$ reaction rates below $T_9=3$ by a non-adiabatic three-body model

Abstract:The triple-$\alpha$ reaction from ternary continuum states at off-resonant energies, $\alpha+\alpha+\alpha \rightarrow ^{12}$C, still remains in unsolved problems. This direct process is estimated with a non-adiabatic Faddeev hyper-spherical harmonics and $R$-matrix expansion method. After reviewing this model, the resultant photo-disintegration of $^{12}$C($2^+_1 \rightarrow 0^+$) is shown to be in 10$^{-15}$--10$^{-3}$ pico-barn order for $0.15 \le E \le 0.35$ MeV. This is far below the values predicted by the recent adiabatic calculations. In spite of the large difference, the derived reaction rates are illustrated to be concordant with the current evaluated rates for $0.08 \le T_9 \le 3$ including helium burning temperatures. The difference below $E = 0.20$ MeV can be seen in the rates for $T_9 \le 0.07$. In comparison with the calculations, the triple-$\alpha$ reaction rates are found to be reduced by about 10$^{-4}$ at $T_9 = 0.05$, because of an accurate description for $^8$Be break-up. Uncertainties of the rates are also estimated by examining sensitivity to 3$\alpha$ potentials. With introducing three-body $S$-factors and a resonant term, the present rates are expressed in an analytic form, and they are provided in a tabular form for astrophysical applications. To update the evaluated rates, non-resonant sequential process between $\alpha+^8$Be may be eliminated by hand.

Detailed study of the astrophysical direct capture reaction $^{6}{\rm Li}(p, γ)^{7}{\rm Be}$ in a potential model approach

Abstract:The astrophysical $S$ factor and reaction rates of the direct capture process $^{6}$Li(p,$\gamma)^{7}$Be are estimated within a two-body single-channel potential model approach. Central potentials of the Gaussian-form in the $^2P_{3/2}$ and $^2P_{1/2}$ waves are adjusted to reproduce the binding energies and the empirical values of the asymptotic normalization coefficients (ANC) for the $^7$Be(3/2$^-$) ground and $^7$Be(1/2$^-$) excited bound states, respectively. The parameters of the potential in the most important $^2S_{1/2}$ scattering channel were fitted to reproduce the empirical phase shifts from the literature and the low-energy astrophysical $S$ factor of the LUNA collaboration. The obtained results for the astrophysical $S$ factor and the reaction rates are in a very good agreement with available experimental data sets. The numerical estimates reproduce not only the absolute values, but also the energy and temperature dependence of the $S$ factor and reaction rates of the LUNA collaboration, respectively. The estimated $^{7}{\rm Li/H}$ primordial abundance ratio $(4.67\pm 0.04 )\times 10^{-10}$ is well consistent with recent BBN result of $(4.72\pm 0.72) \times 10^{-10}$ after the Planck observation.

Plasma Induced Variation of Electron Capture and Bound-State $β$ Decays

Abstract:The slow neutron capture ($s$-process) synthesises ~50% of all elements in the universe heavier than iron, whose abundances are determined by the competition between neutron capture and nuclear $\beta$-decay rates. The latter are expected to vary inside hot and dense plasmas such as those found in $s$-process nucleosynthesis sites. Here, we present a new and general theoretical study of the effect of local and non-local thermodynamic equilibrium ((N)LTE) plasmas on $\beta$-decays, using orbital electron capture (EC) decays in $^{7}$Be as a model case. We begin from the model of Takahashi and Yokoi to calculate the lepton phase volume of $^{7}$Be as a function of its ionisation state and excitation level, and consequently, the configuration-dependent EC decay rate. We then calculate the in-plasma ion charge state distribution (CSD) and level population distribution (LPD) for a grid of plasma density and temperatures, using the population kinetics code FLYCHK. By combining the configuration-dependent EC rate with the CSD and LPD, we calculate the in-plasma orbital EC rate in $^{7}$Be. The results show a strong correlation between the half-life and thermodynamic conditions of the plasma, underlining the importance of measuring decay rates in laboratory plasmas and the relevance of high precision atomic configuration models. The model discussed in this work is capable of calculating EC and bound state $\beta$ decay (BSBD) rates in both low-density NLTE and high-density LTE plasmas. We conclude by validating our model with state-of-the-art data in literature on isotopes of Pr and Dy, and by proposing future extension of the model to laboratory magnetoplasmas and stellar interiors aimed at improving nucleosynthesis models.

Abstract:The vacuum-polarization corrections to rates for nuclear-fusion reactions in the $pp$ chain and in the CNO cycle are calculated. For the reactions of particular importance to the solar-neutrino problem, the $\Hethree$, $\Hefour$, $\Be$, and $\Ni$ reactions, we find the magnitude of the effect to be less than 2\%. The effect of VP on all the other reaction rates is expected to be of a similar order of magnitude. We discuss how these results affect the predicted fluxes of solar neutrinos.

Abstract:Abstract.We report on the investigation of dielectron production in tagged quasi-free neutron-proton collisions by using a deuteron beam of kinetic energy 1.25GeV/u impinging on a liquid hydrogen target. Our measurements with HADES confirm a significant excess of e+e-$$e^{+}e^{-}$$ pairs above the π0$$\pi^{0}$$ mass in the exclusive channel dp→npe+e-(pspect)$$dp \rightarrow npe^{+}e^{-}(p_{spect})$$ as compared to the exclusive channel ppe+e-$$ ppe^{+}e^{-}$$ measured in proton-proton collisions at the same energy. That excess points to different bremsstrahlung production mechanisms. Two models were evaluated for the role of the charged pion exchange between nucleons and double- Δ$$\Delta$$ excitation combined with intermediate ρ$$\rho$$-meson production. Differential cross sections as a function of the e+e-$$e^{+}e^{-}$$ invariant mass and of the angles of the virtual photon, proton and electrons provide valuable constraints and encourage further investigations on both experimental and theoretical sides.

A global study of $^9$Be + p at 2.72 A MeV

Abstract:Background: In our recent experiment, $^9$Be+p at 5.67A MeV, the breakup decay rates to the 3 configurations, $\alpha$+$\alpha$+n, $^8$Be$^*$+n and $^5$He+$^4$He of $^9$Be, were observed and quantified, in a full kinematics approach. Unfolding step by step the accessibility to the above configurations, it will require similar studies at lower and higher energies as well as the interpretation of the data in a theoretical framework. Purpose: Investigate the breakup decay rate of $^9$Be+p at 2.72A MeV, where the $\alpha$+$\alpha$+n configuration is mainly accessible. Compare and interpret data at 2.72A MeV and 5.67A MeV into a 4-body CDCC formalism; Point out and discuss couplings to continuum. Methods: Our experimental method includes an exclusive breakup measurement in a full kinematic approach of $^9$Be incident on a proton target at 2.72A MeV, together with elastic scattering and other reaction channels measurements under the same experimental conditions. The interpretation of the data at 2.72A MeV and 5.67A MeV is considered in a 4-body CDCC approach, using the Transformed Harmonic Oscillator method for the 3-body projectile. Results: An elastic scattering angular distribution at 2.72A MeV is measured, which compares very well with CDCC calculations, indicating a strong coupling to continuum. At the same energy, the measured breakup and total reaction cross sections present good agreement with the calculated values. Further on, the elastic scattering and breakup cross section data at 5.67A MeV are found in very good agreement with the CDCC calculations. The present results support further our 3-body model for the structure of $^9$Be, validating relevant radiative reaction rates obtained previously.

Abstract:Observations of anomalies in the electron-positron angular correlations in high-energy decays in $^4$He, $^8$Be, and $^{12}$C have been reported recently by the ATOMKI collaboration. These could be explained by the creation and subsequent decay of a new boson with a mass of ${\sim}17$ MeV. Theoretical understanding of pair creation in the proton capture reactions used in these experiments is important for the interpretation of the anomalies. We apply the ab initio No-Core Shell Model with Continuum (NCSMC) to the proton capture on $^7$Li. The NCSMC describes both bound and unbound states in light nuclei in a unified way with chiral two- and three-nucleon interactions as the only input. We investigate the structure of $^8$Be, the $p+^7$Li elastic scattering, the $^7$Li($p,\gamma$)$^8$Be cross section and the internal pair creation $^7$Li($p,e^+ e^-$)$^8$Be. We discuss the impact of a proper treatment of the initial scattering state on the electron-positron angular correlation spectrum and compare our results to available ATOMKI data sets. Finally, we calculate $^7$Li($p,X$)$^8$Be cross sections for several proposed models of the hypothetical X17 particle.

Abstract:The E1 and M1 contributions to $^7\mathrm{Be}(p,\gamma)^8\mathrm{B}$ at low energies are calculated in halo effective field theory. The excited $^7\mathrm{Be}^\star$ core is included as an explicit degree of freedom in a coupled-channels calculation. The E1 transition is calculated up to next-to-next-to-leading order. The leading contribution from M1 transition that gives significant contribution in a narrow energy region around the $1^+$ resonance state of $^8$B is included. We compare our results with previous halo effective field theory calculations that also included the $^7\mathrm{Be}^\star$ as an explicit degree of freedom. We disagree with these previous calculations in both the formal expressions and also in the analysis. Bayesian inference of the data gives $S_{17}(0)=21.0(7)$ eV b when combined with the expected theory error.

Abstract:Measurements of the Li6+Be9 collision above the Coulomb barrier ( Elab=11.2 MeV; VCoulab=3.2 MeV) were performed using the Li6 secondary beam selected by the RIBRAS (Radioactive Ion Beams in Brasil) first solenoid. The total reaction cross section was obtained from the Li6+Be9 elastic scattering angular distribution, measured in the same experiment and analyzed by optical model calculations [U. Umbelino et al. , Phys. Rev. C 106 , 054602 (2022)]. Proton, deuteron, triton, and α yields were measured at angles around 45∘ in the laboratory and total fusion cross sections were deduced from the comparison between compound nucleus calculations and the measured light particle yields. The difference between the total reaction cross section and the obtained total fusion cross section provided an estimation of the contribution from other direct reaction mechanisms such as elastic and nonelastic breakup. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevC.109.054605 ©2024 American Physical Society

Abstract:We determine cross sections and astrophysical S factors of the reactions generated in collisions between Li6 and H3 and between Li6 and He3 . A microscopic three-cluster model is employed to study the dynamics of reactions occurring in the mirror nuclei Be9 and B9 . In a previous study [ Phys. Rev. C 109 , 045803 (2024)], this model was successfully applied to investigate the resonance structure of Be9 and B9 , as well as reactions induced by the interaction of deuterons with Li7 and Be7 . A fairly good agreement between theoretical results and available experimental data was achieved. To the best of our knowledge, appropriate experimental data for the astrophysical S factors of the reactions generated by the interaction of Li6 with H3 and with He3 are currently unavailable.
