Abstract:We evaluate the Hadamard function and the vacuum expectation value of the current density for a massive complex scalar field in the generalized geometry of a straight cosmic string with a finite core enclosing an arbitrary distributed magnetic flux along the string axis. For the interior geometry, a general cylindrically symmetric static metric tensor is used with finite support. In the region outside the core, both the Hadamard function and the current density are decomposed into the idealized zero-thickness cosmic string and core-induced contributions. The only nonzero component corresponds to the azimuthal current. The zero-thickness part of the latter is a periodic function of the magnetic flux inside the core, with the period equal to the quantum flux. As a consequence of the direct interaction of the quantum field with the magnetic field inside the penetrable core, the core-induced contribution, in general, is not a periodic function of the flux. In addition, the vacuum current, in general, is not a monotonic function of the distance from the string and may change the sign. For a general model of the core interior, we also evaluate the magnetic fields generated by the vacuum current. As applications of the general results, we have considered an impenetrable core modeled by Robin boundary condition, a core with the Minkowski-like interior and a core with a constant positive curvature space. Various exactly solvable distributions of the magnetic flux are discussed.

Magnetic loop generation by collisionless gravitationally bound plasmas in axisymmetric tori

Abstract:Current-carrying string loops are adopted in astrophysics to model the dynamics of isolated flux tubes of magnetized plasma expected to arise in the gravitational field of compact objects, such as black holes. Recent studies suggest that they could provide a framework for the acceleration and collimation of jets of plasma observed in these systems. However, the problem remains of the search of physical mechanisms which can consistently explain the occurrence of such plasma toroidal structures characterized by nonvanishing charge currents and are able to self-generate magnetic loops. In this paper, the problem is addressed in the context of Vlasov-Maxwell theory for nonrelativistic collisionless plasmas subject to both gravitational and electromagnetic fields. A kinetic treatment of quasistationary axisymmetric configurations of charged particles exhibiting epicyclic motion is obtained. Explicit solutions for the species equilibrium phase-space distribution function are provided. These are shown to have generally a non-Maxwellian character and to be characterized by nonuniform fluid fields and temperature anisotropy. Calculation of the relevant fluid fields and analysis of the Ampere equation then show the existence of nonvanishing current densities. As a consequence, the occurrence of a kinetic dynamo is proved, which can explain the self-generation of both azimuthal and poloidal magnetic fields by the plasma itself. This mechanism can operate in the absence of instabilities, turbulence, or accretion phenomena and is intrinsically kinetic in character. In particular, several kinetic effects contribute to it, identified here with finite Larmor radius, diamagnetic and energy-correction effects together with temperature anisotropy, and non-Maxwellian features of the equilibrium distribution function.
Topological Effects of a Vorticity Filament on the Coherent Backscattering Cone

Abstract:In this Letter, we report on the effects of a vorticity filament on the coherent backscattering cone. Using ultrasonic waves in a strongly reverberating cavity, we experimentally show that the discrete number of loops of acoustic paths around a pointlike vortex located at the center of the cavity drives the cancellation and the potential rebirth of the coherent backscattering enhancement. The vorticity filament behaves, then, as a topological anomaly for wave propagation that provides some new insight between reciprocity and weak localization.

Magnetic field amplification and decay in cosmic string wakes

Abstract:We do a detailed study on vortex formation in a magnetized plasma within the spacetime of a moving cosmic string using analytical and numerical methods. The conical spacetime around the cosmic string causes the frozen-in magnetic field to deform due to the fluid flow. We find that the overdensity in the wake region amplifies the magnetic field. This amplification depends on the direction and the lengthscale of the magnetic perturbations. Alfvens theorem of flux conservation explains this result. However, our study also shows that the magnetic field can decay depending on the perturbation lengthscale, due to the breakdown of Alfvens theorem at a certain lengthscale. This lengthscale is the gyroradius of the charged particles in the plasma. Our findings are significant for understanding magnetic reconnection in cosmic string wakes.

Abstract:Scalar electrodynamics can be used to investigate the formation of cosmic strings in the early universe. We present the results of lattice Monte Carlo simulations of an effective three-dimensional U(1)+Higgs theory that describes the equilibrium properties of finite-temperature scalar electrodynamics near the transition. A gauge-invariant criterion for the existence of a vortex is used in measuring the properties of the vortex network in the equilibrium state both in the Coulomb and in the Higgs phase of the system. The naive definition of the vortex density becomes meaningless in the continuum limit and special care is needed in extracting physical quantities. Numerical evidence for a physical discontinuity in the vortex density is given.

Abstract:The present work studies the gravitational radiation of a non abelian vortex with a non compact internal moduli describing its excitations. This situation may be realised by semi-local supersymmetric vortices [1]–[8], although supersymmetry is not necessary for this to happen. In the situation considered along this work, the internal space has infinite volume, and a largely energetic perturbation propagates along the object, even though the vortex line may not be moving. A specific configuration is presented, in which the internal space is the resolved conifold with its Ricci flat metric. The curious feature about it is that it corresponds to a static vortex, that is, the perturbation is only due to the internal modes. Even being static, the emission of gravitational radiation is in the present case of considerable order. This suggest that the presence of slowly moving objects that can emit a large amount of gravitational radiation is a hint of non abelianity.

Simulating cosmic string loop captured by a rotating black hole

Abstract:We study the dynamics of a cosmic string loop captured by a rotating black hole, ignoring string reconnections. A loop is numerically evolved in Kerr spacetime, with the result that it turns into one or more growing or contracting double-lines rotating around the black hole in the equatorial plane. This is in good agreement with the approximate analytical treatment of the problem investigated by Xing et al., who studied the evolution of the auxiliary curve associated with the string loop. We confirm that the auxiliary curve deformation can indeed describe the string motion in realistic physical scenarios to a reasonable accuracy, and can thus be used to further study other phenomena such as superradiance and reconnections of the captured loop.

Vortex Rings in two Component Bose-Einstein Condensates

Abstract:We study the structure of the vortex core in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates. We demonstrate that the order parameter may not vanish and the symmetry may not be restored in the core of the vortex. In this case such vortices can form vortex rings known as vortons in particle physics literature. In contrast with well-studied superfluid $^4He$, where similar vortex rings can be stable due to Magnus force only if they move, the vortex rings in two-component BECs can be stable even if they are at rest. This beautiful effect was first discussed by Witten in the cosmic string context, where it was shown that the stabilization occurs due to condensation of the second component of the field in the vortex core. This second condensate trapped in the core may carry a current along the vortex ring counteracting the effect of string tension that causes the loop to shrink. We speculate that such vortons may have been already observed in the laboratory. We also speculate that the experimental study of topological structures in BECs can provide a unique opportunity to study cosmology and astrophysics by doing laboratory experiments.
Vacuum current and polarization induced by magnetic flux in a higher-dimensional cosmic string in the presence of a flat boundary

Abstract:In this paper we analyze the vacuum bosonic current and polarization induced by a magnetic flux running along a higher dimensional cosmic string in the presence of a flat boundary orthogonal to the string. In our analysis we assume that the quantum field obeys Dirichlet or Neunmann conditions on the flat boundary. In order to develop this analysis we calculate the corresponding Wightman function. As consequence of the boundary, the Wightamn function is expressed in term of two contributions: The first one corresponds to the boundary-free cosmic string Wightman function, while the second one is induced by the boundary. The boundary-induced contributions have opposite signs for Dirichlet and Newman scalars. Because the analysis of vacuum current and polarization effects in the boundary-free cosmic string spacetime have been developed in the literature, here we are mainly interested in the calculations of the effects induced by the boundary. Regarding to the induced current, we show that, depending on the condition adopted, the boundary-induced azimuthal current can cancel or intensifies the total induced azimuthal current on the boundary; moreover, the boundary-induced azimuthal current is a periodic odd function of the magnetic flux. As to the vacuum expectation values of the field squared and the energy-momentum tensor, the boundary-induced contributions are even functions of magnetic flux. In particular, we consider some special cases of the boundary-induced part of the energy density and evaluate the normal vacuum force on the boundary.

Topological charged BPS vortices in Lorentz-violating Maxwell-Higgs electrodynamics

Abstract:We have performed a complete study of BPS vortex solutions in the Abelian sector of the standard model extension (SME). Specifically, we have coupled the SME electromagnetism with a Higgs field which is supplemented with a Lorentz-violating CPT-even term. We have verified that Lorentz violation (LV) belonging to the Higgs sector allows to interpolate between some well known models like, Maxwell-Higgs, Chern-Simons-Higgs and Maxwell-Chern-Simons-Higgs. We can also observed that the electrical charged density distribution is nonnull in both CPT-even and CPT-odd models; however, the total electric charge in the CPT-even case is null, whereas in the CPT-odd one it is proportional to the quantized magnetic flux. The following general results can be established in relation to the LV introduced in the Higgs sector: it changes the vortex ansatz and the gauge field boundary conditions. A direct consequence is that the magnetic flux, besides being proportional to the winding number, also depends explicitly on the Lorentz-violation belonging to the Higgs sector.

Cosmic (super)strings with a time-varying tension

Abstract:Cosmic (super)strings offer promising ways to test ideas about the early universe and physics at high energies. While in field theory constructions their tension is usually assumed to be constant (or at most slowly-varying), this is often not the case in the context of String Theory. Indeed, the tensions of both fundamental and field theory strings within a string compactification depend on the expectation values of the moduli, which in turn can vary with time. We discuss how the evolution of a cosmic string network changes with a time-dependent tension, both for long-strings and closed loops, by providing an appropriate generalisation of the Velocity One Scale (VOS) model and its implications. The resulting phenomenology is very rich, exhibiting novel features such as growing loops, percolation and a radiation-like behaviour of the long string network. We conclude with a few remarks on the impact for gravitational wave emission.

Gravitational field and lensing of a circular chiral vorton

Abstract:We derive the metric of a circular chiral vorton in the weak field limit. The object is self-supporting by means of its chiral current. A conical singularity with deficit angle, identical to that of straight string with the same linear mass density, is present at the vorton's core. We find that the metric is akin to the electromagnetic $4$-potential of a circular current wire loop, illustrating the concept of gravito-electromagnetism. Surprisingly we find that the solution asymptotically mimics a Kerr-like naked singularity with mass $M_v=4\pi R\mu$ and spin parameter $a=R/2$. Finally, we also simulate the gravitational lensing images by solving the corresponding null geodesic equations. This reveals interesting properties of the images, such as the simultaneous creation of a minimally distorted source image and its Einstein ring, as well as the formation of double images of the back side of the ring.

Abstract:We present a relativistic description of electron vortex beams in a homogeneous magnetic field. Including spin from the beginning reveals that spin-polarized electron vortex beams have a complicated azimuthal current structure, containing small rings of counterrotating current between rings of stronger corotating current. Contrary to many other problems in relativistic quantum mechanics, there exists a set of vortex beams with exactly zero spin-orbit mixing in the highly relativistic and nonparaxial regime. The well-defined phase structure of these beams is analogous to simpler scalar vortex beams, owing to the protection by the Zeeman effect. For states that do show spin-orbit mixing, the spin polarization across the beam is nonuniform rendering the spin and orbital degrees of freedom inherently inseparable.

Abstract:The novel discovery of electron vortices carrying quantized orbital angular momentum motivated intensive research of their basic properties as well as applications, e.g. structural characterization of magnetic materials. In this paper, the fundamental interactions of electron vortices within infinitely long atomic-column-like electromagnetic fields are studied based on the relativistically corrected Pauli-Schrödinger equation and the perturbation theory. The relative strengths of three fundamental interactions, i.e. the electron-electric potential interaction, the electron-magnetic potential/field interaction and the spin-orbit coupling are discussed. The results suggest that the perturbation energies of the last two interactions are in an order of 10(3)-10(4) smaller than that of the first one for electron vortices. In addition, it is also found that the strengths of these interactions are strongly dependant on the spatial distributions of the electromagnetic field as well as the electron vortices.

Dyonic non-Abelian vortex strings in supersymmetric and non-supersymmetric theories: tensions and higher derivative corrections

Abstract:Dyonic non-Abelian local/semi-global vortex strings are studied in detail in supersymmetric/non-supersymmetric Yang-Mills-Higgs theories. While the BPS tension formula is known to be the same as that for the BPS dyonic instanton, we find that the non-BPS tension formula is approximated very well by the well-known tension formula of the BPS dyon. We show that this mysterious tension formula for the dyonic non-BPS vortex stings can be understood from the perspective of a low energy effective field theory. Furthermore, we propose an efficient method to obtain an effective theory of a single vortex string, which includes not only lower derivative terms but also all order derivative corrections by making use of the tension formula. We also find a novel dyonic vortex string whose internal orientation vectors rotate in time and spiral along the string axis.

Evolution of current-carrying string networks

Abstract:Cosmic string networks are expected to form in early Universe phase transitions via the Kibble mechanism and are unavoidable in several Beyond the Standard Model theories. While most predictions of observational signals of string networks assume featureless Abelian-Higgs or Nambu-Goto string networks, in many such extensions the networks can carry additional degrees of freedom, including charges and currents; these are often generically known as superconducting strings. All such degrees of freedom can impact the evolution of the networks and therefore their observational signatures. We report on the results of $2048^3$ field theory simulations of the evolution of a current-carrying network of strings, highlighting the different scaling behaviours of the network in the radiation and matter eras. We also report the first numerical measurements of the coherence length scales for the charge and current and of the condensate equation of state, and show that the latter mainly depends on the expansion rate, with chirality occurring for the matter era. Qualitatively, the fact that the matter era is the optimal expansion rate for these networks to reach scaling is in agreement with recent analytic modeling.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the vacuum bosonic current density induced by a carrying-magnetic-flux cosmic string in a $(D+1)$-de Sitter spacetime considering the presence of two flat boundaries perpendicular to it. In this setup, the Robin boundary conditions are imposed on the scalar charged quantum field on the boundaries. The particular cases of Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions are studied separately. Due to the coupling of the quantum scalar field with the classical gauge field, corresponding to a magnetic flux running along the string's core, a nonzero vacuum expectation value for the current density operator along the azimuthal direction is induced. The two boundaries divide the space in three regions with different properties of the vacuum states. In this way, our main objective is to calculate the induced currents in these three regions. In order to develop this analysis we calculate, for both regions, the positive frequency Wightman functions. Because the vacuum bosonic current in dS space has been investigated before, in this paper we consider only the contributions induced by the boundaries. We show that for each region the azimuthal current densities are odd functions of the magnetic flux along the string. To probe the correctness of our results, we take the particular cases and analyze some asymptotic limits of the parameters of the model. Also some graphs are presented exhibiting the behavior of the current with relevant physical parameter of the system.

Abstract:The vacuum expectation value of the current density for a massive scalar field in a (D + 1)-dimensional flat space-time with compact dimension is investigated. Along a compact dimension, the field operator obeys the helical quasiperiodicity condition with a constant phase. The results previously studied in the literature are obtained in the special case of a zero helicity parameter. In contrast to this case, the vacuum current, in addition to the component along the compact dimension, has a non-zero component in the direction of the non-compact dimension along which the field operator is shifted. A simple relation between these components is obtained. They are odd periodic functions of magnetic flux penetrating the compact dimension, with the period equal to the magnetic flux quantum. For a given non-zero value of the helicity parameter, the component of the vacuum current along the compact dimension tends to zero in the limit when the length of that dimension tends to zero. In the problem considered earlier with the usual quasiperiodic condition, the vacuum current diverges in that limit.
