Abstract:The Lorentz-Abraham-Dirac equations (LAD) may be the most commonly accepted equation describing the motion of a classical charged particle in its electromagnetic field. However, it is well known that they bare several problems. In particular, almost all solutions are dynamically unstable, and therefore, highly questionable. The question remains whether better equations of motion than LAD can be found to describe the dynamics of charges in the electromagnetic fields. In this paper we present an approach to derive such equations of motions, taking as input the Maxwell equations and a particular charge model only, similar to the model suggested by Dirac in his original derivation of LAD in 1938. We present a candidate for new equations of motion for the case of a single charge. Our approach is motivated by the observation that Dirac's derivation relies on an unjustified application of Stokes' theorem and an equally unjustified Taylor expansion of terms in his evolution equations. For this purpose, Dirac's calculation is repeated using an extended charge model that does allow for the application of Stokes' theorem and enables us to find an explicit equation of motion by adapting Parrott's derivation, thus avoiding a Taylor expansion. The result are second order differential delay equations, which describe the radiation reaction force for the charge model at hand. Their informal Taylor expansion in the radius of the charge model used in the paper reveals again the famous triple dot term of LAD but provokes the mentioned dynamical instability by a mechanism we discuss and, as the derived equations of motion are explicit, is unnecessary.

Abstract:We study radiation reaction in a Lorentz violating electrodynamics [1]. We explore the possible modification whatsoever present in the radiation reaction force experienced by an accelerating charge in the modified Maxwell theory. However it turns out that radiation reaction receives no change due to Lorentz violation whereas electromagnetic mass manifests anisotropy.

Abstract:We calculate the energy radiated coherently by a system of $N$ charged non relativistic particles. It disagrees with the energy loss which is obtained if one employs the Lorentz Abraham Dirac (LAD) equation for each particle, and sums up the contributions. This fact was already clearly stated in the classical literature long ago. The reason for the discrepancy is the omission of the mixing terms in the Poynting vector. For some simple systems we present a generalized equation for the radiation reaction force which cures this defect. The counter examples show that the LAD equation cannot be generally valid and that all "proofs" must fail somewhere. We demonstrate this failure for some popular examples in the literature.

Abstract:This article contains a digest of the theory of electromagnetism and a review of the transformation between inertial frames, especially under low speed limits. The covariant nature of the Maxwell's equations is explained using the conventional language. We show that even under low speed limits, the relativistic effects should not be neglected to get a self-consistent theory of the electromagnetic fields, unless the intrinsic dynamics of these fields has been omitted completely. The quasi-static limits, where the relativistic effects can be partly neglected are also reviewed, to clarify some common misunderstandings and imprecise use of the theory in presence of moving media and other related situations. The discussions presented in this paper provide a clear view of why classical electromagnetic theory is relativistic in its essence.

Abstract:We derive a massive analog of the ALD (Abraham, Lorentz and Dirac) equation, i.e., the equation of motion of a relativistic charged particle with a radiation reaction term induced by emissions of massive fields. We show that the radiation reaction term has a non-analytic behavior as a function of the mass M of the radiation field and both expansions with respect of M and 1/M are generally invalid. Hence the massive ALD equation cannot be written as a local equation with derivative expansions. We especially investigate the radiation reaction in three specific motions, uniform acceleration, a circular motion and a scattering process.

A Conceptual Shift to Rectify a Defect in the Lorentz-Dirac Equation

Abstract:In his analysis of the Classical Theory of Radiating Electrons, Dirac (1938) draws attention to the characteristic instability of solutions to the third order equation of motion. He remarks that changing the sign of the self-force eliminates the runaway solutions and gives `reasonable behaviour'. Dirac rejects such a change and proceeds with an ad hoc modification to the solutions of the initial value problem that is not consistent with the principle of causality. We argue that his reasons for rejecting the change of sign are invalid on both physical and mathematical grounds. The conceptual shift is to treat the physical particle as a composite of the source particle and the energy-momentum that is reversibly generated in its self-field by its motion. The reversibly generated energy in the self-field is interpreted as kinetic energy, and the changes that follow result in Dirac's change of sign. Several exact solutions to the new equation of motion and its linearisation are given. For a particle in orbital motion the self-force enables the applied force to generate radiation and kinetic energy in the self-field that results in an outward spiral motion. The theory is consistent with all well-established principles of physics, including the principle of causality.

A new radiation reaction approximation for particle dynamics in the strong field regime

Abstract:(Abridged) Following particle trajectories in the intense electromagnetic field of a neutron star is prohibited by the large ratio between the cyclotron frequency $\omega_{\rm B}$ and the stellar rotation frequency $\Omega$. No fully kinetic simulations on a macroscopic scale and with realistic field strengths have been performed so far due to the huge computational cost implied by this enormous scale of separation. In this paper, we derive new expressions for the particle velocity subject to strong radiation reaction that are intended to be more accurate than the current state-of-the-art expression in the radiation reaction limit regime, the so-called Aristotelian regime. We shortened the timescale hierarchy by solving the particle equation of motion in the radiation reaction regime, where the Lorentz force is always and immediately balanced by the radiative drag, and including a friction not necessarily opposite to the velocity vector, as derived in the Landau-Lifshitz approximation. Starting from the reduced Landau-Lifshitz equation (i.e. neglecting the field time derivatives), we found expressions for the velocity depending only on the local electromagnetic field configuration and on a new parameter related to the field strength that controls the strength of the radiative damping. The new velocity expressions produce results similar in accuracy to the radiation reaction limit approximation. We therefore do not expect this new method to improve the accuracy of neutron star magnetosphere simulations. The radiation reaction limit is a simple but accurate, robust, and efficient way to follow ultra-relativistic particles in a strong electromagnetic field.

Abstract:The effective equations of motion for a point charged particle taking account of radiation reaction are considered in various space-time dimensions. The divergencies steaming from the pointness of the particle are studied and the effective renormalization procedure is proposed encompassing uniformly the cases of all even dimensions. It is shown that in any dimension the classical electrodynamics is a renormalizable theory if not multiplicatively beyond d=4. For the cases of three and six dimensions the covariant analogs of the Lorentz-Dirac equation are explicitly derived.

Abstract:From the development of the electron theory by H. A. Lorentz in 1906, many authors have tried to reformulate this model named "radiation reaction". P. A. M. Dirac derived the relativistic-classical electron model in 1938, which is now called the Lorentz-Abraham-Dirac model. But this model has the big difficulty of the run-away solution. Recently, this equation has become important for ultra-intense laser-electron (plasma) interactions. Therefore, it is desirable to stabilize this model of the radiation reaction for estimations. Via my recent research, I found a stabilized model of radiation reaction in quantum vacuum. This leads us to an updated Fletcher-Millikan's charge to mass ratio including radiation, de/dm, derived as the 4th order tensor measure. In this paper, I will discuss the latest update of the model and the ability of the equation of motion with radiation reaction in quantum vacuum via photon-photon scatterings.

Abstract:Rapidly moving sources create pairs in the vacuum and lose energy. In consequence of this, the velocity of a charged body cannot approach the speed of light closer than a certain limit which depends only on the coupling constant. The vacuum back-reaction secures the observance of the conservation laws. A source can lose up to 50% of energy and charge because of the vacuum instability.

Abstract:The relativistic problem of motion of a classical electrical point charge that has been placed between the plates of a charged capacitor and then released from rest is well-posed in Bopp-Landé-Thomas-Podolsky (BLTP) electrodynamics. That theory introduces a single new parameter, Bopp's $\varkappa$, a reciprocal length. The present article concerns the small-$\varkappa$ regime. Radiation-reaction effects on the motion are shown to appear at order $\varkappa^3$. It is found that in the initial phase the motion is accurately accounted for by test particle theory, with the inertia determined by the bare mass of the particle. Subsequently, radiation-reaction effects cause substantial deviations from the test particle motion.

Abstract:The trajectories of relativistic particles in an intense electromagnetic field can be described by the Landau-Lifshitz (LL) equation, where radiation reaction (RR) is accounted for via a self-force, and interparticle fields are often neglected as an approximation. Yet, the inclusion of interparticle fields is necessary to ensure energy-momentum conservation, in particular during coherent emission. We present a simple generalization of the LL equation for many bodies, which includes coherence effects in the self-force. This theory is shown both analytically and numerically to satisfy energy-momentum conservation as expected. By simulating a neutral, relativistic bunch of electrons and positrons ($e^-/e^+$) colliding with a laser pulse, we show that the inclusion of interparticle fields can significantly affect the particle dynamics and the emission spectrum, even though the external field dominates over the interparticle fields.

Abstract:Previous studies from the astrophysics and laser physics communities have identified an interesting phenomenon wherein ultrarelativistic charged particles experiencing strong radiation reaction tend to move along special directions fixed by the local electromagnetic field. In the relativity literature these are known as the "principal null directions" (PNDs) of the Maxwell field. A particle in this regime has "Aristotelian" dynamics in the sense that its velocity (rather than acceleration) is determined by the local field. We study this Aristotelian equilibrium in detail, starting from the Landau-Lifshitz equation describing charged particle motion including radiation reaction. Using a Frenet-Serret frame adapted to the PNDs, we derive the Lorentz factor describing motion along the local PND, together with drift velocities reflecting slower passage from one PND to another. We derive conditions on the field configuration that are necessary for such an equilibrium to occur. We demonstrate agreement of our analytic formulas with full numerical solutions of the Landau-Lifshitz equation in the appropriate regime.

Abstract:We study the radiation reaction acting on an accelerating charge moving in noncommutative spacetime and obtain an expression for it. Radiation reaction, due to a nonrelativistic point charge, is found to receive a small noncommutative correction term. The Abraham-Lorentz equation for a point charge in noncommutative spacetime suffers from the pre-acceleration and the runaway problems. We explore as an application the radiation reaction experienced by a charge which undergoes harmonic oscillations in a noncommutative plane.

Abstract:We study radiation from charged particles in circular motion around a Schwarzschild black hole immersed in an asymptotically uniform magnetic field. In curved space, the radiation reaction force is described by the DeWitt-Brehme equation, which includes a complicated, nonlocal tail term. We show that, contrary to some claims in the literature, this term cannot, in general, be neglected. We account for self-force effects directly by calculating the electromagnetic energy flux at infinity and on the horizon. The radiative field is obtained using black hole perturbation theory. We solve the relevant equations analytically, in the low-frequency and slow-motion approximation, as well as numerically in the general case. Our results show that great care must be taken when neglecting the tail term, which is often fundamental to capture the dynamics of the particle: in fact, it only seems to be negligible when the magnetic force greatly dominates the gravitational force, so that the motion is well described by the Abraham–Lorentz–Dirac equation. We also report a curious "horizon dominance effect" that occurs for a radiating particle in a circular orbit around a black hole (emitting either scalar, electromagnetic or gravitational waves): for fixed orbital radius, the fraction of energy that is absorbed by the black hole can be made arbitrarily large by decreasing the particle velocity. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevD.109.124032 © 2024 American Physical Society

Abstract:It is shown, that the radiation of the charge, moving with uniform acceleration or uniformly moving round a circle and also freely moving in a gravitational field, contradicts the principle of equivalence. It is also shown, that the interaction of the charges, moving with uniform acceleration or uniformly circling, which has been calculated within the framework of classical electrodynamics, leads to the violation of laws of conservation of energy, impulse and angular momentum. We have offered a method in which way to conform electrodynamics to the principle of equivalence. So in the electrodynamics, which has been conformed in such a way, all the mentioned violations of the laws of conservation are automatically removed and the stability of Rutherford's atom is explained. It is shown that the changes, which we have brought into the electrodynamics, do not contradict the results of experiments.

Abstract:After more than a century of history, the radiation-reaction problem in classical electrodynamics still surprises and puzzles new generations of researchers. Here we revise and explain some of the paradoxical issues that one faces when approaching the problem, mostly associated with regimes of uniform proper acceleration. The answers we provide can be found in the literature and are the synthesis of a large body of research. We just present them in a personal way that may help in their understanding. Besides, after the presentation of the standard answers we motivate and present a twist to those ideas. The physics of emission of radiation by extended charges (charges with internal structure) might proceed in a surprising oscillating fashion. This hypothetical process could open up new research paths and a new take on the equivalence principle.
