Abstract:Recent developments in calculations of the light hadron spectrum are reviewed. Particular emphasis is placed on discussion of to what extent the quenched spectrum agrees with experiment. Recent progress, both for quenched and full QCD, in reducing scaling violation with the use of improved actions is presented.

Abstract:We prove that every closed, smooth $n$-manifold $X$ admits a Riemannian metric together with a smooth, transversely oriented CMC foliation if and only if its Euler characteristic is zero, where by CMC foliation we mean a codimension-one, transversely oriented foliation with leaves of constant mean curvature and where the value of the constant mean curvature can vary from leaf to leaf. Furthermore, we prove that this CMC foliation of $X$ can be chosen so that the constant values of the mean curvatures of its leaves change sign. We also prove a general structure theorem for any such non-minimal CMC foliation of $X$ that describes relationships between the geometry and topology of the leaves, including the property that there exist compact leaves for every attained value of the mean curvature.

Abstract:We propose a unified definition for discrete analogues of constant mean curvature surfaces in spaces of constant curvature as a special case of discrete special isothermic nets. Bäcklund transformations and Lawson's correspondence are discussed. It is shown that the definition generalizes previous definitions and a construction for discrete cmc surfaces of revolution in space forms is provided.

Abstract:We define discrete constant mean curvature (cmc) surfaces in the three-dimensional Euclidean and Lorentz spaces in terms of sphere packings with orthogonally intersecting circles. These discrete cmc surfaces can be constructed from orthogonal ring patterns in the two-sphere and the hyperbolic plane. We present a variational principle that allows us to solve boundary value problems and to construct discrete analogues of some classical cmc surfaces. The data used for the construction is purely combinatorial - the combinatorics of the curvature line pattern. In the limit of orthogonal circle patterns we recover the theory of discrete minimal surfaces associated to Koebe polyhedra all edges of which touch a sphere. These are generalized to two-sphere Koebe nets, i.e., nets with planar quadrilateral faces and edges that alternately touch two concentric spheres.

Abstract:In this note we consider the relationship between the dressing action and the holonomy representation in the context of constant mean curvature surfaces. We characterize dressing elements that preserve the topology of a surface and discuss dressing by simple factors as a means of adding bubbles to a class of non finite type cylinders.

Abstract:In this paper, we study a natural discretization of the smooth Gaussian curvature on surfaces, which is defined as the quotient of the angle defect and the area of a geodesic disk at a vertex of a polyhedral surface. It is proved that each decorated piecewise Euclidean metric on surfaces with nonpositive Euler number is discrete conformal to a decorated piecewise Euclidean metric with this discrete curvature constant. We further investigate the prescribing combinatorial curvature problem for a parametrization of this discrete curvature and prove some Kazdan-Warner type results. The main tools are Bobenko-Lutz's discrete conformal theory for decorated piecewise Euclidean metrics on surfaces and variational principles with constraints.

Conservation laws for surfaces of constant mean curvature in 3-dimensional space forms

Abstract:The exterior differential system for constant mean curvature (CMC) surfaces in a 3-dimensional space form is an elliptic Monge-Ampere system defined on the unit tangent bundle. We determine the infinite sequence of higher-order symmetries and conservation laws via an enhanced prolongation modelled on a loop algebra valued formal Killing field. As a consequence we establish Noether's theorem for the CMC system and there is a canonical isomorphism between the symmetries and conservation laws. A geometric interpretation of the $\mathbb{S}^{1}$-family of associate surfaces leads to an integrable extension for a non-local symmetry called spectral symmetry. We show that the corresponding spectral conservation law exists as a secondary characteristic cohomology class. For a compact linear finite type CMC surface of arbitrary genus, we observe that the monodromies of the associated flat $\mathfrak{sl}(2,\mathbb{C})$-connection commute with each other. It follows that a single spectral curve is defined as the completion of the set of eigenvalues of the entire monodromies. This agrees with the recent result that a compact high genus linear finite type CMC surface necessarily factors through a branched covering of a torus. We introduce a sequence of Abel-Jacobi maps defined by the periods of conservation laws. For the class of deformations of CMC surfaces which scale the Hopf differential by a real parameter, we compute the first order truncated Picard-Fuchs equation. The resulting formulae for the first few terms exhibit a similarity with the Griffiths transversality theorem for variation of Hodge structures.

On the classification of discrete conformal structures on surfaces

Abstract:Glickenstein \cite{Glickenstein} and Glickenstein-Thomas \cite{GT} introduced the discrete conformal structures on surfaces in an axiomatic approach and studied its classification. In this paper, we give a full classification of the discrete conformal structures on surfaces, which completes Glickenstein-Thomas' classification. As a result, we find some new classes of discrete conformal structures on surfaces, including some of the generalized circle packing metrics introduced by Guo-Luo \cite{GL2}. The relationships between the discrete conformal structures on surfaces and the 3-dimensional hyperbolic geometry are also discussed.

Abstract:Abstract We discuss a notion of discrete conformal equivalence for decorated piecewise Euclidean surfaces (PE-surface), that is, PE-surfaces with a choice of circle about each vertex. It is closely related to inversive distance and hyperideal circle patterns. Under the assumption that the circles are non-intersecting, we prove the corresponding discrete uniformization theorem. The uniformization theorem for discrete conformal maps corresponds to the special case that all circles degenerate to points. Our proof relies on an intimate relationship between decorated PE-surfaces, canonical tessellations of hyperbolic surfaces and convex hyperbolic polyhedra. It is based on a concave variational principle, which also provides a method for the computation of decorated discrete conformal maps.

Abstract:We introduce a new class of discrete conformal structures on surfaces with boundary, which have nice interpolations in 3-dimensional hyperbolic geometry. Then we prove the global rigidity of the new discrete conformal structures using variational principles, which is a complement of Guo-Luo's rigidity of the discrete conformal structures and Guo's rigidity of vertex scaling on surface with boundary. As a result, new convexities of the volume of generalized hyperbolic pyramids with right-angled hyperbolic hexagonal bases are obtained. Motivated by Chow-Luo's combinatorial Ricci flow and Luo's combinatorial Yamabe flow on closed surfaces, we further introduce combinatorial Ricci flow and combinatorial Calabi flows to deform the new discrete conformal structures on surfaces with boundary. The basic properties of these combinatorial curvature flows are established. These combinatorial curvature flows provide effective algorithms for constructing hyperbolic metrics on surfaces with totally geodesic boundary components of prescribed lengths.

Abstract:In this paper, we study a natural discretization of the smooth Gaussian curvature on surfaces. A discrete uniformization theorem is established for this discrete Gaussian curvature. We further investigate the prescribing combinatorial curvature problem for a parametrization of this discrete Gaussian curvature, which is called the combinatorial $\alpha$-curvature. To find decorated piecewise hyperbolic metrics with prescribed combinatorial $\alpha$-curvatures, we introduce the combinatorial $\alpha$-Ricci flow for decorated piecewise hyperbolic metrics. To handle the potential singularities along the combinatorial $\alpha$-Ricci flow, we do surgery along the flow by edge flipping under the weighted Delaunay condition. Then we prove the longtime existence and convergence of the combinatorial $\alpha$-Ricci flow with surgery. As an application of the combinatorial $\alpha$-Ricci flow with surgery, we give the existence of decorated piecewise hyperbolic metrics with prescribed combinatorial $\alpha$-curvatures. We further introduce the combinatorial $\alpha$-Calabi flow with surgery and study its longtime behavior.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce the discrete conformal structures on surfaces with boundary in an axiomatic approach, which ensures that the Poincaré dual of an ideally triangulated surface with boundary has a good geometric structure.Then we classify the discrete conformal structures on surfaces with boundary, which turns out to unify and generalize Guo-Luo's generalized circle packings \cite{GL2}, Guo's vertex scalings \cite{Guo} and Xu's partial discrete conformal structures \cite{Xu22} on surfaces with boundary.This generalizes the results of Glickenstein-Thomas \cite{GT} on closed surfaces to surfaces with boundary. Motivated by \cite{BPS, Zhang-Guo-Zeng-Luo-Yau-Gu}, we further study the relationships between the discrete conformal structures on surfaces with boundary and the hyperbolic trigonometry. Unexpectedly, we find that some subclasses of the discrete conformal structures on surfaces with boundary are closely related to the twisted generalized hyperbolic triangles introduced by Roger-Yang \cite{Roger-Yang}, which does not appear in the case of closed surfaces. Finally, we study the relationships between the discrete conformal structures on surfaces with boundary and the 3-dimensional hyperbolic geometry by constructing ten types of generalized hyperbolic tetrahedra. Some new generalized hyperbolic tetrahedra recently introduced by Belletti-Yang \cite{B-Y} naturally appears in the constructions.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce a definition of discrete conformality for triangulated surfaces with flat cone metrics and describe an algorithm for solving the problem of prescribing curvature, that is to deform the metric discrete conformally so that the curvature of the resulting metric coincides with the prescribed curvature. We explicitly construct a discrete conformal map between the input triangulated surface and the deformed triangulated surface. Our algorithm can handle the surface with any topology with or without boundary, and can find a deformed metric for any prescribed curvature satisfying the Gauss-Bonnet formula. In addition, we present the numerical examples to show the convergence of our discrete conformality and to demonstrate the efficiency and the robustness of our algorithm.
On Regularity of Catmull-Clark Subdivision Surfaces

Abstract:The regularity of the Catmull-Clark (C-C) subdivision surfaces is studied in this paper, aiming to de-duce a simple and easy to use sufficient condition for discriminating the regularity of a C-C subdivision surface. Specifically, we first present the definitions of three types of difference vectors on the mesh, i.e., forward differ-ence vector, central difference vector, and backward difference vector; and then, develop the subdivision formats of the difference vectors; moreover, the relationship between the tangent vectors of a C-C subdivision surface and the deference vectors of its initial control mesh is established by eigen analysis; finally, a sufficient condition for the regularity of a C-C subdivision surface is deduced. Because the condition is represented as the geometric rela-tionship between the difference vectors on the initial control mesh, it has clear geometric meanings. Experiments show that the sufficient condition is easy to validate.
Discrete Differential Geometry for $C^{1,1}$ Hyperbolic Surfaces of Non-Constant Curvature

Abstract:We develop a discrete differential geometry for surfaces of non-constant negative curvature, which can be used to model various phenomena from the growth of flower petals to marine invertebrate swimming. Specifically, we derive and numerically integrate a version of the classical Lelieuvre formulas that apply to immersions of $C^{1,1}$ hyperbolic surfaces of non-constant curvature. In contrast to the constant curvature case, these formulas do not provide an explicit method for constructing an immersion but rather describe an immersion via an implicit set of equations. We propose an iterative method for resolving these equations. Because we are interested in scenarios where the curvature is a function of the intrinsic material coordinates, in particular, on the geodesic distance from an origin, we suggest a fast marching method for computing geodesic distance on manifolds. We apply our methods to generate surfaces of non-constant curvature and demonstrate how one can introduce branch points to account for the sort of multi-generational buckling and subwrinkling observed in many applications.

Abstract:We apply an arbitrary number of dressing transformations to a static minimal surface in AdS(4). Interestingly, a single dressing transformation, with the simplest dressing factor, interrelates the latter to solutions of the Euclidean non linear sigma model in dS(3). We present an expression for the area element of the dressed minimal surface in terms of that of the initial one and comment on the boundary region of the dressed surface. Finally, we apply the above formalism to the elliptic minimal surfaces and obtain new ones.

Abstract:Consider the Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^3$ endowed with a canonical semi-symmetric non-metric connection determined by a vector field $\mathsf{C}\in\mathfrak{X}(\mathbb{R}^3)$. We study surfaces when the sectional curvature with respect to this connection is constant. In case that the surface is cylindrical, we obtain full classification when the rulings are orthogonal or parallel to $\mathsf{C}$. If the surface is rotational, we prove that the rotation axis is parallel to $\mathsf{C}$ and we classify all conical rotational surfaces with constant sectional curvature. Finally, for the particular case $\frac12$ of the sectional curvature, the existence of rotational surfaces orthogonally intersecting the rotation axis is also obtained.

Abstract:Recently, it is discovered that a certain class of nanocarbon materials has geometrical properties related to the discrete geometry, pre-constant discrete principal curvature [9] based on the discrete surface theory proposed on trivalent graphs by Kotani, Naito and Omori [10]. In this paper, with the aim of an application to the nanocarbon materials, we will study discrete constant principal curvature (CPC) surfaces. Firstly, we developed the discrete surface theory on a full 3-ary oriented tree so that we define a discrete analogue of principal directions on them to investigate it. We also construct some interesting examples of discrete constant principal curvature surfaces, including discrete CPC tori.

Abstract:Given two circle patterns of the same combinatorics in the plane, the Möbius transformations mapping circumdisks of one to the other induces a $PSL(2,\mathbb{C})$-valued function on the dual graph. Such a function plays the role of an osculating Möbius transformation and induces a realization of the dual graph in hyperbolic space. We characterize the realizations and obtain a one-to-one correspondence in the cases that the two circle patterns share the same shear coordinates or the same intersection angles. These correspondences are analogous to the Weierstrass representation for surfaces with constant mean curvature $H\equiv 1$ in hyperbolic space. We further establish convergence on triangular lattices.

Abstract:A discrete conformality for hyperbolic polyhedral surfaces is introduced in this paper. This discrete conformality is shown to be computable. It is proved that each hyperbolic polyhedral metric on a closed surface is discrete conformal to a unique hyperbolic polyhedral metric with a given discrete curvature satisfying Gauss-Bonnet formula. Furthermore, the hyperbolic polyhedral metric with given curvature can be obtained using a discrete Yamabe flow with surgery. In particular, each hyperbolic polyhedral metric on a closed surface with negative Euler characteristic is discrete conformal to a unique hyperbolic metric.
