Abstract:The hydrodynamics equations of binary mixtures of Bose gases, Fermi gases, and mixtures of Bose and Fermi gases in the presence of external potentials are derived. These equations can be applied to current experiments on mixtures of atomic gases confined in magnetic traps.

Abstract:We obtain the superfluid hydrodynamic equations of a multi-component Bose gas with short-ranged interactions at zero temperature under the local equilibrium assumption and show that the quantum pressure is generally present in the nonuniform case. Our approach can be extended to systems with long-range interactions such as dipole-dipole interactions by treating the Hartree energy properly. For a highly symmetric superfluid, we obtain the excitation spectrum and show that except for the density phonon, all other excitations are all degenerate. The implication of our results is discussed.

Abstract:For the quantum kinetic system modeling the Bose–Einstein Condensate that accounts for interactions between condensate and excited atoms, we use the Chapman–Enskog expansion to derive its hydrodynamic approximations, include both Euler and Navier–Stokes approximations. The hydrodynamic approximations describe not only the macroscopic behavior of the BEC but also its coupling with the non-condensates, which agrees with the Landau two-fluid theory.

Abstract:We study thermal properties of a trapped Bose-Bose mixture in a dilute regime using quantum Monte Carlo methods. Our main aim is to investigate the dependence of the superfluid density and the condensate fraction on temperature, for the mixed and separated phases. To this end, we use the diffusion Monte Carlo method, in the zero-temperature limit, and the path-integral Monte Carlo method for finite temperatures. The results obtained are compared with solutions of the coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations for the mixture at zero temperature. We notice the existence of an anisotropic superfluid density in some phase-separated mixtures. Our results also show that the temperature evolution of the superfluid density and condensate fraction is slightly different, showing noteworthy situations where the superfluid fraction is smaller than the condensate fraction.

Abstract:Recently it was shown that the Landau-Khalatnikov two-fluid hydrodynamics describes the collision-dominated region of a trapped Bose condensate interacting with a thermal cloud. We use these equations to discuss the low frequency hydrodynamic collective modes in a trapped Bose gas at finite temperatures. We derive a variational expressions based on these equations for both the frequency and damping of collective modes. A new feature is our use of frequency-dependent transport coefficients, which produce a natural cutoff by eliminating the collisionless low-density tail of the thermal cloud. Above the superfluid transition, our expression for the damping in trapped inhomogeneous gases is analogous to the result first obtained by Landau and Lifshitz for uniform classical fluids. We also use the moment method to discuss the crossover from the collisionless to the hydrodynamic region. Recent data for the monopole-quadrupole mode in the hydrodynamic region of a trapped gas of metastable $^4$He is discussed. We also present calculations for the damping of the analogous $m=0$ monopole-quadrupole condensate mode in the superfluid phase.

Abstract:Starting from the quantum kinetic equation for the non-condensate atoms and the generalized Gross-Pitaevskii equation for the condensate, we derive the two-fluid hydrodynamic equations of a trapped Bose gas at finite temperatures. We follow the standard Chapman-Enskog procedure, starting from a solution of the kinetic equation corresponding to the complete local equilibrium between the condensate and the non-condensate components. Our hydrodynamic equations are shown to reduce to a form identical to the well-known Landau-Khalatnikov two-fluid equations, with hydrodynamic damping due to the deviation from local equilibrium. The deviation from local equilibrium within the thermal cloud gives rise to dissipation associated with shear viscosity and thermal conduction. In addition, we show that effects due to the deviation from the diffusive local equilibrium between the condensate and the non-condensate (recently considered by Zaremba, Nikuni and Griffin) can be described by four frequency-dependent second viscosity transport coefficients. We also derive explicit formulas for all the transport coefficients. These results are used to introduce two new characteristic relaxation times associated with hydrodynamic damping. These relaxation times give the rate at which local equilibrium is reached and hence determine whether one is in the two-fluid hydrodynamic region.

Abstract:A two-component Bose-Einstein condensate confined in an axially-symmetric potential with two local minima, resembling two concentric annular traps, is investigated. The system shows a number of quantum phase transitions that result from the competition between phase coexistence, and radial/azimuthal phase separation. The ground-state phase diagram, as well as the rotational properties, including the (meta)stability of currents in this system, are analysed.

Abstract:In this paper, we study a system of two-component Bose gas in an artificial magnetic field trapped by concentric harmonic and annular potentials, respectively. The system is realized by gases with two-internal states like the hyperfine states of $^{87}$Rb. We are interested in effects of a Rabi oscillation between them. Two-component Bose Hubbard model is introduced to describe the system, and Gross-Pitaevskii equations are used to study the system. We first study the Bose gas system in the annular trap by varying the width of the annulus and strength of the magnetic field, in particular, we focus on the phase slip and superflow. Then we consider the coupled Bose gas system in a magnetic field. In a strong magnetic field, vortices form a Abrikosov triangular lattice in both Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs), and locations of vortices in the BECs correlate with each other by the Rabi coupling. However, as the strength of the Rabi coupling is increased, vortices start to vibrate around their equilibrium locations. As the strength is increased further, vortices in the harmonic trap start to move along the boundaries of the annulus. Finally for a large Rabi coupling, the BECs are destroyed. Based on our findings about the BEC in the annular trap, we discuss the origin of above mentioned phenomena.

Abstract:We theoretically address magnetic ordering at zero and finite temperature in both homogeneous and trapped Bose-Bose mixtures in optical lattices. By using Bosonic Dynamical Mean-Field Theory, we obtain the phase diagram of the homogeneous two-component Bose-Hubbard model in a three-dimensional (3D) cubic lattice, which features competing magnetic order of XY-ferromagnetic and anti-ferromagnetic type in addition to the Mott and superfluid states. We show that these magnetic phases persist also in the presence of a harmonic trap.

Abstract:The p -wave superfluid is characterized by nontrivial topological characteristics essential for fault-tolerant quantum state manipulation. However, the practical realization of the p -wave state remains a challenging problem. We study the s - and p -wave superfluidity in mixtures of fermionic and spinor bosonic gases and derive a general set of the gap equations for these superfluid states. Numerically solving the gap equations for the s -wave state, we quantify the physical conditions for the realization of the pure p -wave state in a well-controlled environment of atomic physics in the absence of an admixture of the s -wave state.

Abstract:Recent experimental realizations of superfluid mixtures of Bose and Fermi quantum gases provide a unique platform for exploring diverse superfluid phenomena. We study dipole oscillations of a double superfluid in a cigar-shaped optical dipole trap, consisting of ^41K and ^6Li atoms with a large mass imbalance, where the oscillations of the bosonic and fermionic components are coupled via the Bose-Fermi interaction. In our high-precision measurements, the frequencies of both components are observed to be shifted from the single-species ones, and exhibit unusual features. The frequency shifts of the ^41K component are upward (downward) in the radial (axial) direction, whereas the ^6Li component has down-shifted frequencies in both directions. Most strikingly, as the interaction strength is varied, the frequency shifts display a resonant-like behavior in both directions, for both species, and around a similar location at the BCS side of fermionic superfluid. These rich phenomena challenge theoretical understanding of superfluids.

Abstract:We investigate the collective excitations of a one-dimensional ultracold Fermi gas in the crossover from a Bardeen–Cooper–Schrieffer superfluid to a Bose-Einstein condensate. The trap we consider is a quadratic plus quartic potential in view of the relevant experimental conditions. Using variational approaches, the coupled equations of motions for the center-of-mass coordinate of the Superfluid Fermi gas and its width are derived. Then, two low-energy excitation modes are obtained analytically. The frequency shift induced by the anharmonic distortion, and the collapse and revival of the collective excitations originating from the nonlinear coupling between the two modes are discussed.

Abstract:We study an atomic Bose-Fermi mixture in an optical lattice which is confined using an optical trap. We obtain the Mott ground states of such a system in the limit of deep optical lattice and discuss the effect of quantum fluctuations on these states. We also study the superfluid-insulator transitions of bosons and metal-insulator transition of fermions in such a mixture within a slave-rotor mean-field approximation, and obtain the corresponding phase diagram. We discuss experimental implications of our results.

Abstract:We study the tunneling dynamics of a Bose–Fermi superfluid mixture where bosons are confined in a double-well potential and fermions in a harmonic potential symmetrically positioned at the center of the double-well. By focusing on the deep Bose–Einstein condensate side of the inter-fermion Feshbach resonance where the fermions can be well described as molecular bosons, we employ a mean-field method and numerically investigate the dynamical evolution of bosons under different parameters and initial conditions. We find that the interaction with background fermions can enrich the tunneling dynamics of the bosons, and specifically, lead to a re-entrant macroscopic quantum self-trapping state by varying different parameters. Our results can be observed in Bose–Fermi superfluid mixture by tuning interactions via Feshbach resonance and confinement-induced resonance.

Abstract:In this paper, we develop an appropriate set of hydrodynamic equations for a U(N) invariant superfluid that couple the dynamics of superflow and magnetization. In the special case when both the superfluid and normal velocities are zero, the hydrodynamic equations reduce to a generalized version of Landau-Lifshitz equation for ferromagnetism with U(N) symmetry. When both velocities are non-zero, there appears couplings between the superflow and magnetization dynamics, and the superfluid velocity no longer satisfies the irrotational condition. On the other hand, the magnitude of magnetization is no longer a constant of motion as was the case for the standard Landau-Lifshitz theory. In comparison with the simple superfluid, the first and second sounds are modified by a non-zero magnetization through various thermodynamic functions. For U(2) invariant superfluid, we get both (zero-) sound wave and a spin wave at zero temperature. It is found that the dispersion of spin wave is always quadratic, which is consistent with microscopic analysis. In the Appendix, we show that the hydrodynamic equation for a U(N) invariant superfluid can be obtained from the general hydrodynamic equation with arbitrary internal symmetries.

Abstract:We study particles in a vortex state driven to a core state with lower energy and zero angular momentum by the trap potential asymmetries. We End that at T = 0 when the role of the thermal gas can be ignored, there will be coexisting condensates. We also calculate the fluctuation of the number difference and argue that in certain range of the parameters the state of the whole system is the macroscopic quantum self-trapping in the Josephson tunnelling regime.
Expansion dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates in a synthetic magnetic field

Abstract:We investigate the expansion dynamics of spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensates subjected to a synthetic magnetic field, after their release from an external harmonic trap. Our findings reveal that the condensate experiences a spin-dependent rotation and separation due to the rigid-like rotational velocity field, which leads to a spin density deflection. The deflection angle reaches a peak at a time that is inversely related to the frequency of the harmonic trap. When the detuning gradient is below a critical value for vortex nucleation, our analytical results derived from a spinor hydrodynamic theory align closely with numerical results using the coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations. Beyond this critical value, we also numerically simulated the expansion dynamics of the condensates containing vortices with negative circulation. Our findings highlight the pivotal role of the rigid-like rotational velocity field on the dynamics of the condensate and may stimulate further experimental investigations into the rich superfluid dynamics induced by synthetic magnetic fields.

Abstract:A mixture of a spin-polarized Fermi gas and a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate is considered in which $s$-wave scattering between fermions and the quasiparticles of the dipolar condensate can result in an effective attractive Fermi-Fermi interaction long-range and anisotropic in nature and tunable by the dipolar interaction. It is shown that such an interaction can significantly increase the prospect of realizing a superfluid with a gap parameter characterized with a coherent superposition of all odd partial waves. In the spirit of the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov mean-field approach, a theory is formulated that allows the estimation of the critical temperature when the anisotropic Fock potential is taken into consideration and the determination of the system parameters that optimize the critical temperature at which such a superfluid emerges before the system begins to phase separate.

Abstract:We calculate the entropy in a trapped, resonantly interacting Fermi gas as a function of temperature for a wide range of magnetic fields between the BCS and Bose-Einstein condensation end points. This provides a basis for the important technique of adiabatic sweep thermometry and serves to characterize quantitatively the evolution and nature of the excitations of the gas. The results are then used to calibrate the temperature in several ground breaking experiments on Li-6 and K-40.
Droplet-superfluid compounds in binary bosonic mixtures

Abstract:While quantum fluctuations in binary mixtures of bosonic atoms with short-range interactions can lead to the formation of a self-bound droplet, for equal intracomponent interactions but an unequal number of atoms in the two components, there is an excess part that cannot bind to the droplet. Imposing confinement, as here through periodic boundary conditions in a one-dimensional setting, the droplet becomes amalgamated with a residual condensate. The rotational properties of this compound system reveal simultaneous rigid-body and superfluid behavior in the ground state and uncover that the residual condensate can carry angular momentum even in the absence of vorticity. In contradiction to the intuitive idea that the superfluid fraction of the system would be entirely made up of the excess atoms not bound by the droplet, we find evidence that this fraction is higher than what one would expect in such a picture.
