Abstract:We explore generalized symmetry in the context of nonlinear dynamical gravity. Our basic strategy is to transcribe known results from Yang-Mills theory directly to gravity via the tetrad formalism, which recasts general relativity as a gauge theory of the local Lorentz group. By analogy, we deduce that gravity exhibits a one-form symmetry implemented by an operator $U_\alpha$ labeled by a center element $\alpha$ of the Lorentz group and associated with a certain area measured in Planck units. The corresponding charged line operator $W_\rho$ is the holonomy in a spin representation $\rho$, which is the gravitational analog of a Wilson loop. The topological linking of $U_\alpha$ and $W_\rho$ has an elegant physical interpretation from classical gravitation: the former materializes an exotic chiral cosmic string defect whose quantized conical deficit angle is measured by the latter. We verify this claim explicitly in an AdS-Schwarzschild black hole background. Notably, our conclusions imply that the standard model exhibits a new symmetry of nature at scales below the lightest neutrino mass. More generally, the absence of global symmetries in quantum gravity suggests that the gravitational one-form symmetry is either gauged or explicitly broken. The latter mandates the existence of fermions. Finally, we comment on generalizations to magnetic higher-form or higher-group gravitational symmetries.

On local duality invariance in electromagnetism

Abstract:Duality is one of the oldest known symmetries of Maxwell equations. In recent years the significance of duality symmetry has been recognized in superstrings and high energy physics and there has been a renewed interest on the question of local duality rotation invariance. In the present paper we re-visit global duality symmetry in the Maxwell action and delineate the ambiguous role of gauge invariance and time locality. We have recently demonstrated that local duality invariance in a Lorentz covariant form can be carried out in the Maxwell equations. In this paper it is shown that in the four-pseudo vector Lagrangian theory of Sudbery a local duality generalization can be naturally and unambiguously implemented and the Euler-Lagrange equations of motion are consistent with the generalized Maxwell field equations. It is pointed out that the extension of Noether theorem in full generality for a vector action is an important open problem in mathematical physics. Physical consequences of this theory for polarized light and topological insulators are also discussed.

Abstract:Einstein's theory in the vacuum was recently shown to possess an $SO(2)$ duality invariance, which is broken by coupling to matter. Duality invariance can be restored by enlarging the phase space of the theory to allow for violations of the algebraic Bianchi identity. We show that in cases where the matter content can be understood as a component of the torsion tensor duality can be restored and we compute the corresponding duality current. We consider the case of NS-NS gravity as an example and find that the duality current is given by the divergence of the axion. In the linearized approximation of the low energy heterotic string theory these results imply that duality of the generalized Riemann curvature tensor implements Riemannian, axion-dilaton and electro-magnetic dualities simultaneously.

Symmetry and Integrability of a Reduced, 3-Dimensional Self-Dual Gauge Field Model

Abstract:A 3-dimensional reduction of the seld-dual Yang-Mills (SDYM) equation, named SDYM3, is examined from the point of view of its symmetry and integrability characteristics. By using a non-auto-Backlund transformation, this equation is connected to its potential form (PSDYM3) and a certain isomorphism between the Lie algebras of symmetries of the two systems is shown to exist. This isomorphism allows us to study the infinite-dimensional Lie algebraic structure of the "potential symmetries" of SDYM3 by examining the symmetry structure of PSDYM3 (which is an easier task). By using techniques described in a recent paper, the recursion operators for both SDYM3 and PSDYM3 are derived. Moreover, a Lax pair and an infinite set of nonlocal conservation laws for SDYM3 are found, reflecting the fact that SDYM3 is a totally integrable system. This system may physically represent gravitational fields or chiral fields.

Duality as a Method to Derive a Gauge Invariant Massive Electrodynamics and New Interactions

Abstract:Taking into account the recent developments associated with duality in physics, this article is focused on investigating the properties of a tensor generalization of the electrodynamics dual to the standard vector model even considering the full radiative corrections. A discussion on duality is extended for non-linearly interacting models. The alternative tensor structure allows a new local self-interaction and also a partial gauge invariant mass term. In this way, the renormalization conditions, a new interaction, Ward-Takahashi identities for all the sets of gauge symmetries, and the Schwinger-Dyson quantum equations are carefully provided to consistently characterize the propagating modes of the quantum system. The possibility of this gauge invariant massive extension is considered from the perspective of a generalized Stueckelberg procedure for higher derivative systems.

Abstract:One of the simplest examples of noninvertible symmetries in higher dimensions appears in 4D Maxwell theory, where its SL(2,Z) duality group can be combined with gauging subgroups of its electric and magnetic 1-form symmetries to yield such defects at many different values of the coupling. Even though N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills (SYM) theory also has an SL(2,Z) duality group, it only seems to share two types of such noninvertible defects with Maxwell theory (known as duality and triality defects). Motivated by this apparent difference, we begin our investigation of the fate of these symmetries by studying the case of 4D N=4 U(1) gauge theory, which contains Maxwell theory in its content. Surprisingly, we find that the noninvertible defects of Maxwell theory give rise, when combined with the standard U(1) symmetry acting on the free fermions, to defects that act on local operators as elements of the U(1) outer automorphism of the N=4 superconformal algebra, an operation that was referred to in the past as the "bonus symmetry." Turning to the non-Abelian case of N=4 SYM theory, the bonus symmetry is not an exact symmetry of the theory, but is known to emerge at the supergravity limit. Gauging generalised symmetries in linear gravity

Abstract:The theory of a free spin-2 field on Minkowski spacetime has 1-form and $(d-3)$-form symmetries associated with conserved currents formed by contractions of the linearised Riemann tensor with conformal Killing-Yano 2-forms. We show that a subset of these can be interpreted as Noether currents for specific shift symmetries of the graviton that involve a Killing vector and a closed 1-form parameter. We give a systematic method to gauge these 1-form symmetries by coupling the currents to background gauge fields and introducing a particular set of counter-terms involving the background fields. The simultaneous gauging of certain pairs of 1-form and $(d-3)$-form symmetries is obstructed by the presence of mixed 't Hooft anomalies. The anomalous pairs of symmetries are those which are related by gravitational duality. The implications of these anomalies are discussed.

Abstract:Linearised gravity has a global symmetry under which the graviton is shifted by a symmetric tensor satisfying a certain flatness condition. There is also a dual symmetry that can be associated with a global shift symmetry of the dual graviton theory. The corresponding conserved charges are shown to satisfy a centrally-extended algebra. We discuss the gauging of these global symmetries, finding an obstruction to the simultaneous gauging of both symmetries which we interpret as a mixed 't Hooft anomaly for the ungauged theory. We discuss the implications of this, analogous to those resulting from a similar structure in Maxwell theory, and interpret the graviton and dual graviton as Nambu-Goldstone modes for these shift symmetries.

Abstract:For any causal nonlinear electrodynamics theory that is "self-dual" (electromagnetic U(1)-duality invariant), the Legendre-dual pair of Lagrangian and Hamiltonian densities are constructed from functions on R + related to a particle-mechanics Lagrangian and Hamiltonian. We show how a 'duality' relating l to implies that and are related by a simple map between appropriate pairs of variables. We also discuss Born's "Legendre self-duality" and implications of a new "Φ-parity" duality. Our results are illustrated with many examples.

Field-Dependent Metrics and Higher-Form Symmetries in Duality-Invariant Theories of Non-Linear Electrodynamics

Abstract:We prove that a $4d$ theory of non-linear electrodynamics has equations of motion which are equivalent to those of the Maxwell theory in curved spacetime, but with the usual metric $g_{\mu \nu}$ replaced by a unit-determinant metric $h_{\mu \nu} ( F )$ which is a function of the field strength $F_{\mu \nu}$, if and only if the theory enjoys electric-magnetic duality invariance. Among duality-invariant models, the Modified Maxwell (ModMax) theory is special because the associated metric $h_{\mu \nu} ( F )$ produces identical equations of motion when it is coupled to the Maxwell theory via two different prescriptions which we describe. We use the field-dependent metric perspective to analyze the electric and magnetic $1$-form global symmetries in models of self-dual electrodynamics. This analysis suggests that any duality-invariant theory possesses a set of conserved currents $j^\mu$ which are in one-to-one correspondence with $2$-forms that are harmonic with respect to the field-dependent metric $h_{\mu \nu} ( F )$.

Non-Abelian T-dualities in Two Dimensional $(0,2)$ Gauged Linear Sigma Models

Abstract:Two dimensional gauged linear sigma models(GLSMs) with $(0,2)$ supersymmetry and $U(1)$ gauge group possesing global symmetries are considered. For the case obtained as a reduction from the $(2,2)$ supersymmetric GLSM, we find the Abelian T-dual, comparing with previous studies. Then, the Abelian T-dual model of the pure $(0,2)$ theory is found. Instanton corrections are also discussed in both situations. In the cases under study we explore the vacua for the scalar potential and we analyse the target space geometry of the dual model. A model with gauge symmetry $U(1)\times U(1)$ is also discussed as precursor of an interesting example with non-Abelian global symmetry. Non-Abelian T-dualization of $U(1)$ $(0,2)$ $2d$ GLSMs is implemented for models which arise as a reduction from $(2,2)$ supersymmetry; we study a concrete model with $U(1)$ gauge symmetry and $SU(2)$ global symmetry. It is shown that for a positive definite scalar potential, the dual vacua to $\mathbb{P}^1$ constitutes a disk. Instanton corrections to the superpotential are obtained and shown to be encoded in a shifting of the holomorphic function ${E}$. We conclude by analyzing an example with $SU(2)\times SU(2)$ global symmetry and we obtain that the space of dual vacua to $\mathbb{P}^1\times \mathbb{P}^1$ consists of two copies of the disk, also for the case of positive definite potential. Here we are able to fully integrate the equations of motion leading to non-Abelian duality, improving with respect to previous $(2,2)$ studies.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to investigate the gauge symmetry of classicalfield theories in integral formalism. A gauge invariant theory is defined interms of the invariance of the physical observables under the coordinatetransformations in principal bundle space. Through the detailed study on theproperty of non-Abelian parallel transportor under gauge transformations, weshow that it is not generally a two-point spinor, i.e. an operator to beaffected only by the gauge group elements at the two end points of the paralleltransport path, except for the pure gauge situation, and therefore the localgauge symmetry for non-Abelian models is found to be broken in non-perturbativedomain. However, an Abelian gauge theory is proved to be strictly invariantunder local gauge transformation, as it is illustrated by the invariance of theinterference pattern of electrons in Aharonov-Bohm effect. The related issuesof the phenomenon are discussed.

Abstract:Using a generalised Noether prescription we are able to extract all the currents and their conservation laws in space dependent shift symmetric theories. Various identities among the currents in the matter sector are found that form the basis for revealing a dual picture when the full interacting theory is considered by coupling to gauge fields. The coupling is achieved in terms of vector fields by adhering to a modified minimal prescription which is also supported by an iterative Noether scheme. Further, this scheme shows that couplings can also be introduced using higher rank tensor gauge fields that have appeared in recent discussions on fractons. We reveal a connection among these descriptions (using vector or tensor fields) through certain duality maps that relate the various fields (gauge, electric and magnetic) in the two cases. A correspondence is established among the Gauss' law, Faraday's law and Ampere's law. Explicit calculations are provided for linear and quadratic shift symmetric lagrangians.

Generalized Symmetries For Generalized Gravitons

Abstract:We construct generalized symmetries for linearized Einstein gravity in arbitrary dimensions. First-principle considerations in QFT force generalized symmetries to appear in dual pairs. Verifying this prediction helps us find the full set of non-trivial conserved charges -- associated, in equal parts, with 2-form and $(D-2)$-form currents. Their total number is $D(D+1)$. We compute the quantum commutators of pairs of dual charges, showing that they are non-vanishing for regions whose boundaries are non-trivially linked with each other and zero otherwise, as expected on general grounds. We also consider general linearized higher-curvature gravities. These propagate, in addition to the usual graviton, a spin-0 mode as well as a massive ghost-like spin-2 one. When the latter is absent, the theory is unitary and the dual-pairs principle is respected. In particular, we find that the number and types of charges remain the same as for Einstein gravity, and that they correspond to continuous generalizations of the Einsteinian ones.

Abstract:We consider Maxwell theory on a non-spin manifold. Depending on the choice of statistics for line operators, there are three non-anomalous theories and one anomalous theory with different symmetry fractionalizations. We establish the gauging maps that connect the non-anomalous theories by coupling them to a discrete gauge theory. We also construct topological interfaces associated with SL(2, Z ) duality and gauging of electric and magnetic one-form symmetries. Finally, by stacking the topological interfaces, we compose various kinds of duality defects, which lead to non-invertible symmetries of non-spin Maxwell theories.

Weyl quadratic gravity as a gauge theory and non-metricity vs torsion duality

Abstract:We review (non-supersymmetric) gauge theories of four-dimensional space-time symmetries and their quadratic action. The only true gauge theory of such a symmetry (with a physical gauge boson) that has an exact geometric interpretation, generates Einstein gravity in its spontaneously broken phase and is anomaly-free, is that of Weyl gauge symmetry (of dilatations). Gauging the full conformal group does not generate a true gauge theory of physical (dynamical) associated gauge bosons. Regarding the Weyl gauge symmetry, it is naturally realised in Weyl conformal geometry, where it admits two different but equivalent geometric formulations, of same quadratic action: one non-metric but torsion-free, the other Weyl gauge-covariant and metric (with respect to a new differential operator). To clarify the origin of this intriguing result, a third equivalent formulation of this gauge symmetry is constructed using the standard, modern approach on the tangent space (uplifted to space-time by the vielbein), which is metric but has vectorial torsion. This shows an interesting duality vectorial non-metricity vs vectorial torsion of the corresponding formulations, related by a projective transformation. We comment on the physical meaning of these results.
