Abstract:We investigate the nonlinear behavior of a simple pendulum fixed to an elastic rod, which can only vibrate horizontally. When released without initial angular momentum, the plane of the pendulum rotates, and the bob traces a delicate stationary pattern. We explain this effect as amplitude modulation due to the nonlinear coupling between the two degrees of freedom. We construct a theoretical model and approximately solve the equations of motion analytically (using the method of multiple scales); we also solve these equations numerically. In the analytical solution, the modulation period depends not only on the dynamical parameters but also on the pendulum's initial release position, which is typical of nonlinear systems. Finally, we build a simple apparatus and conduct a quantitative experiment. The approximate analytical solutions exhibit the same trends as the numerical results and experimental data. After adding linear dissipation, the numerical and experimental results match fairly well. This system can serve as an instructive demonstration as well as a nonlinear dynamics research project for undergraduate students.

Abstract:A generalization of the classical Kapitza pendulum is considered: an inverted planar mathematical pendulum with a vertically vibrating pivot point in a time-periodic horizontal force field. We study the existence of forced oscillations in the system. It is shown that there always exists a periodic solution along which the rod of the pendulum never becomes horizontal, i.e. the pendulum never falls, provided the period of vibration and the period of horizontal force are commensurable. We also present a sufficient condition for the existence of at least two different periodic solutions without falling. We show numerically that there exist stable periodic solutions without falling.

Abstract:In this paper we study the global dynamics of the inverted spherical pendulum with a vertically vibrating suspension point in the presence of an external horizontal periodic force field. We do not assume that this force field is weak or rapidly oscillating. We prove that there always exists a non-falling periodic solution, i.e., there exists an initial condition such that the rod of the pendulum never becomes horizontal along the corresponding solution. We also show numerically that there exists an asymptotically stable non-falling solution for a wide range of parameters of the system.

Abstract:In this paper the movement of a pendulum is analyzed considering the mass of the string from which the pendulum hangs, the analysis is carried out by perturbations considering that the mass of the string is much less than the mass of the pendulum. The results show that the mass of the string has two effects on the motion of the pendulum, the first is the increase in the inertia of the system and modification of the center of mass of the system, which translates into an increase in the frequency of the pendulum and the second effect is produced by the vibrations of the string itself, modifying the movement of the pendulum.

Abstract:Pendulums have long fascinated humans ever since Galileo theorized that they are isochronic with regards to their swing. While this simplification is useful in the case of small-angle pendulums due to the accuracy of the small-angle approximation, it breaks down for large-angle pendulums and can cause larger problems with the computational modelling of simple pendulums. This paper will examine the differences between the periods of small-angle and large-angle pendulums, offering derivations of the period in both models from the basic laws of nature. This paper also provides a common way of deriving elliptic integrals from physical phenomena, and the period of pendulums has been one of the major building blocks in this new, developing field. Lastly, this paper makes a number of suggestions for extensions into the study of simple pendulums that can be performed. While this paper is not intended as a rigorous mathematical proof, it is designed to illuminate the derivation of the exact periods of simple pendulums and carefully walks through the mathematics involved.

Abstract:The motion of a classical pendulum in a gravitational field of strength g is explored. The complex trajectories as well as the real ones are determined. If g is taken to be imaginary, the Hamiltonian that describes the pendulum becomes -symmetric. The classical motion for this -symmetric Hamiltonian is examined in detail. The complex motion of this pendulum in the presence of an external periodic forcing term is also studied.

Abstract:The pendulum model is a classic model in physics and has important theoretical and practical significance. In the actual application process of engineering, the characteristic that the simple pendulum has a tendency to always be stable towards the low side of the gravitational potential energy is often used to design the corresponding deformation mechanism as a sensing or control component. In this paper, a deformation structure of a simple pendulum based on this characteristic is analyzed, and a nonlinear dynamic model of the simple pendulum under variable damping is established according to the actual force analysis. Due to the complexity of its analytical solution, this paper adopts the method of numerical analysis to establish a simulation analysis model to analyze the motion pattern of the pendulum when the relative speed and direction of the pendulum and the damper are different and the damping force of the pendulum is different.

Abstract:Dynamics of a pendulum of variable length with a movable suspension point performing a predetermined motion is considered. The laws of changing the length of the pendulum and the motion of the suspension point are indicated, at which the equation of motion can be reduced to the equation of motion of a mathematical pendulum of constant length. The result obtained is extended to the case of a spherical pendulum.

Abstract:This paper aims to show how to guide students with a familiar example to extract as much physics as possible before jumping into mathematical calculation. The period for a physical pendulum made up of a uniform rod is changed by attaching a piece of putty on it. The period for the combined system depends on the location of the putty. Simple reasoning without calculation shows that there are two locations for the putty that do not change the period of the physical pendulum: the axis and the center of percussion. Moreover, without calculation, we reason that there is at least one minimal period when the putty lies somewhere between these two locations.

Abstract:In this study, we employed the principle of Relative Mode Transfer Method (RMTM) to establish a model for a single pendulum subjected to sudden changes in its length. An experimental platform for image processing was constructed to accurately track the position of a moving ball, enabling experimental verification of the pendulum's motion under specific operating conditions. The experimental data demonstrated excellent agreement with simulated numerical results, validating the effectiveness of the proposed methodology. Furthermore, we performed simulations of a double obstacle pendulum system, investigating the effects of different parameters, including obstacle pin positions, quantities, and initial release angles, on the pendulum's motion through numerical simulations. This research provides novel insights into addressing the challenges associated with abrupt and continuous changes in pendulum length.

Study on the Motion Analysis and Influencing Factors of Simple Pendulum and Double Pendulum

Abstract:The large swing angle simple pendulum experiment caused systematic errors in periodic measurement due to the neglect of air damping. Based on the motion equation of a single pendulum with weak damping and large swing angles, the analytical formula of the cumulative “period” changing with the pendulum is deduced, and the basic law of the decrease of the “period” with the pendulum is analyzed. Combined with the analysis of experimental data, it is verified that it is used. The system error correction is carried out in the large swing angle simple pendulum experiment, so as to reduce the feasibility of random error through cumulative measurement. A double pendulum formed by two single pendulums connected in series is hung at one end, and two single pendulums with the natural frequency of the double pendulum are hung at the other end. First, push the high-frequency single pendulum as the driving force, and the double pendulum swings in an antisymmetric manner; secondly, push the low-frequency single pendulum gently, and the double pendulum responds in a symmetrical manner; then, push the double pendulum in any way, and the high-frequency single pendulum immediately Responds, resonance occurs, low-frequency pendulum response is very slow, but it can still last for several hours.

Abstract:This study reports the analytical solution for a generalized rotational pendulum system with gallows and periodic excited forces. The multiple scales method (MSM) is applied to solve the proposed problem. Several types of rotational pendulum oscillators are studied and talked about in detail. These include the forced damped rotating pendulum oscillator with gallows, the damped standard simple pendulum oscillator, and the damped rotating pendulum oscillator without gallows. The MSM first-order approximations for all the cases mentioned are derived in detail. The obtained results are illustrated with concrete numerical examples. The first-order MSM approximations are compared to the fourth-order Runge Kutta (RK4) numerical approximations. Additionally, the maximum error is estimated for the first-order approximations obtained through the MSM compared to the numerical approximations obtained by the RK4 method. Furthermore, we conducted a comparative analysis of the outcomes obtained by the used method (MSM) and He-MSM to ascertain their respective levels of precision. The proposed method can be applied to analyze many strong nonlinear oscillatory equations.

Abstract:In the paper we consider systems in oscillating force fields such that the classical method of averaging can be applied. We present sufficient conditions for the existence of forced oscillations in such systems and study the asymptotic behaviour of some solutions. In particular, we show that for an inverted pendulum with a horizontally moving pivot point in an oscillating gravity field there exists a solution along which the pendulum never falls.

Abstract:In this paper transition curves and periodic solutions of a parametric pendulum system are calculated analytically by employing the energy method. In previous studies this problem usually was dealt with by using the asymptotic method which is limited by small parameter. In our research, the hypothesis of small number in the pendulum system is not necessary, some different conclusions are obtained on the impacts of nonlinearity in the pendulum system on the transition curves in the parametric plane. The results based on the asymptotic method suggested that nonlinearity in the pendulum system only significantly causes decrease of the area of the stable regions in the parametric plane when the angular displacement of the pendulum is not very small. However, our analysis according to the energy method shows that nonlinearity does not significantly change the area of the stable regions in the parametric plane, but notably alter positions of the stable regions. Furthermore, position of the stable regions to a large extent is related to the amplitude of periodic vibrations of the pendulum especially when the angular displacement of the pendulum is large enough. Our results are very different from that reported in previous studies, which have been verified by numerical simulations. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
A new Visual approach to pendulum period determination

Abstract:The period of oscillation of a simple pendulum ($T = 2\pi\sqrt{l/g}$) is a familiar formula to the average first-year physics student. However, deriving this expression from first principles involves solving a non-linear differential equation using the small angle approximation, which may appear obscure to a student in the early stages of learning calculus. Therefore, we propose an alternative approach to the derivation of this formula employing geometry, algebra, and physical intuition. Our method follows the ideas of the fathers of calculus, replacing the circular path of the pendulum with a successive collection of infinitesimal inclined planes and summing the travel times of each plane in the limit as the number of planes becomes very large. Notably, the evaluation of this limit relies solely on geometry, making it accessible to any student, even those not yet familiar with calculus techniques.

The behaviour of a forced spherical pendulum operating in a weightless environment

Abstract:Summary In this article, we show that by subjecting the pivot of a simple inextensible pendulum to small amplitude high frequency rectilinear oscillations it is possible to make it operate in a weightless environment. The axis of vibration of the pivot defines a preferred direction in space and a consequential dynamical structure which is completely absent when the pivot is fixed. Using spherical polar coordinates centred at the pivot, we show that the motion of such a pendulum has fast and slow-scale components which we analyse using the method of multiple scales. The slow scale equation for the polar angle is autonomous, and a phase plane analysis reveals the essential orbital structure including the existence of conical solutions analogous to the terrestrial fixed pivot conical pendulum. In the absence of an azimuthal velocity component, its behaviour can provide a direct simulation of a plane terrestrial simple fixed pivot pendulum with a correspondingly simple form for the small amplitude period. We can also use a two-scale analysis to examine the effects of damping. Here, the slow scale polar equation has two asymptotically stable states, and we employ a combination of numerical and asymptotic analyses to elicit the slow scale orbital trajectories.

Abstract:We compare several discretizations of the simple pendulum equation in a series of numerical experiments. The stress is put on the long-time behaviour. The chosen numerical schemes are either symplectic maps or integrable (energy-preserving) maps, or both. Therefore, they preserve qualitative features of solutions (such as periodicity). We describe characteristic periodic time dependences of numerical estimates of the period and the amplitude, and explain them as systematic numerical by-effects produced by any method. Finally, we propose a new numerical scheme which is a modification of the discrete gradient method. This modified discrete gradient method preserves (almost exactly) the period of small oscillations for any time step.
Simplification of Governing Equation of a Trifilar Pendulum and Its Resonance Problem

Abstract:For a trifilar pendulum, which is widely used to identify the inertial parameters of odd-shaped rigid bodies or structural assemblies, applicability of the governing equation and the conditions to avoid resonance are addressed. The governing equation is systematically discussed, focusing on equation simplification and the condition to ignore translational vibration. A set of clear conditions are thus obtained, which are in terms of design parameters of the trifilar pendulum, and the inertial and geometric parameters of the body under test. Under that condition, the governing equation can be linearized to a form that is now widely used for inertial parameter identification. With explicit formulae about frequencies of torsional and transversal vibration, which are typical vibration modes of any trifilar pendulum, a condition is also presented under which the two forms of vibration will be coupled. This coupling will destroy experiments due to resonance. A practical example is given to demonstrate the requirements for design parameters of the trifilar pendulum and the inertial and geometric properties of the body under test, so as to avoid resonance. Guidance for designing and applying a trifilar pendulum is listed.

Abstract:International Journal of Structural Stability and Dynamics, Ahead of Print. A parametric pendulum excited by a discrete wave-modulated step function of length is subjected to a mathematical analysis and numerical modeling. We observe an existence of almost periodic solutions of ordinary differential equations with linear boundary value conditions. An exemplary oscillator subject to both an almost periodic step elongation and forcing synchronizes with the forcing, tending to almost periodic motions like stable limit cycles. Conditions for that synchronization as well as trajectories of numerical solutions on time history plots and phase planes are shown to confirm correctness of the analytical derivations and dedicated numerical modeling.

Abstract:An analytical approximation of the solution to the differential equation describing the oscillations of the damped nonlinear pendulum at large angles is presented. The solution is expressed in terms of the Jacobi elliptic functions by including a parameter-dependent elliptic modulus. The analytical solution is compared with the numerical solution and the agreement is found to be very good. In particular, it is found that the points of intersection with the abscissa axis of the analytical and numerical solution curves generally differ by less than 0.1%. An expression for the period of oscillation of the damped nonlinear pendulum is presented, and it is shown that the period of oscillation is dependent on time. It is established that, in general, the period is longer than that of a linearized model, asymptotically approaching the period of oscillation of a damped linear pendulum.
