Abstract:We perform long-term ($\approx 15$ yr, observed-frame) X-ray variability analyses of the 68 brightest radio-quiet active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in the 6 Ms $Chandra$ Deep Field-South (CDF-S) survey; the majority are in the redshift range of $0.6-3.1$, providing access to penetrating rest-frame X-rays up to $\approx 10-30$ keV. Twenty-four of the 68 sources are optical spectral type I AGNs, and the rest (44) are type II AGNs. The time scales probed in this work are among the longest for X-ray variability studies of distant AGNs. Photometric analyses reveal widespread photon-flux variability: $90\%$ of AGNs are variable above a 95% confidence level, including many X-ray obscured AGNs and several optically classified type II quasars. We characterize the intrinsic X-ray luminosity ($L_{\rm{X}}$) and absorption ($N_{\rm{H}}$) variability via spectral fitting. Most (74%) sources show $L_{\rm{X}}$ variability; the variability amplitudes are generally smaller for quasars. A Compton-thick candidate AGN shows variability of its high-energy X-ray flux, indicating the size of reflecting material to be $\lesssim 0.3$ pc. $L_{\rm{X}}$ variability is also detected in a broad absorption line (BAL) quasar. The $N_{\rm{H}}$ variability amplitude for our sample appears to rise as time separation increases. About 16% of sources show $N_{\rm{H}}$ variability. One source transitions from an X-ray unobscured to obscured state while its optical classification remains type I; this behavior indicates the X-ray eclipsing material is not large enough to obscure the whole broad-line region.

Abstract:ABSTRACT The observation data of blazar 1ES 1426+42.8 were obtained using the 1.02 m optical telescope of Yunnan Observatories during 2021 to 2023. Intraday variability (IDV) is detected on seven nights. We use the turbulent model to investigate the mechanism of IDV in 1ES 1426+42.8. The fitting light curves match the actual IDV curves well. Using this model, we obtain the parameters such as the size of turbulent cells and the width of pulses in the jet. A possible short-lived quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) of $58.55 \pm 8.09$ min was detected on 2022 April 26 whose light curve exhibits eight cycles at $\gt 3\sigma$ global significance and confirmed by several different techniques. Through a more detailed analysis of the light curve of this night, we find that the period is shortened from 54.23 min ($4\sigma$) to 29.71 min ($3\sigma$). The possible QPO and period shortening phenomenon are best explained by the processes of magnetic reconnections.

Abstract:The intraday optical variability of the BL Lacertae object S5 0716+714 is studied using historical light curves. The well-sampled intranight data set is selected. In total, 19 333 data points have been collected over 208 nights. The source exhibits strong variability in the optical band. At a confidence level of 99.9 per cent, for 162 of the 208 nights the source shows intranight variability. The source varies with an increasing rate of 0.043 mag h-1 and a decreasing rate of 0.036 mag h-1 during the observations, with no evident difference between rising and falling parts. The fast variability is found on JD 245 1909, with a decreasing rate of 0.015 mag min-1 over 6 min. The temporal characteristic is studied by using the structure function method. The result shows that the source varies with an 11.5-min time-scale. For this source, the emission size is estimated to be 1.39 x 1014 cm, the mass of the central black hole is estimated to be 107.87 M? and the magnetic field strength is estimated to be 10.6 G.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Although flux variability is one of the defining properties of accretion flows on to supermassive black holes, its dependence on physical parameters such as the mass of the compact object and the Eddington ratio remains under discussion. In this paper, we address this issue using the structure function statistic to measure the variability at X-ray wavelengths of a sample of optically selected QSOs with available black hole masses and Eddington ratios. We present a new Bayesian methodology for estimating the structure function tailored to the Poisson nature of the X-ray data. This is applied to 15 548 SDSS DRQ16 QSOs with repeat observations in the XMM–Newton archive and/or the SRG/eROSITA All Sky Survey. The X-ray structure function monotonically increases to time intervals of about 10–15 yrs, consistent with scenarios in which instabilities of the accretion disc contribute to the X-ray variability on long time-scales. Additionally, there is evidence that the amplitude of the stochastic X-ray flux variations rises with decreasing black hole mass and Eddington ratio. This finding imposes stringent constraints on empirical models of Active Galactic Nuclei variability derived from local samples, emphasizing the significance of high-redshift population studies for comprehending the stochastic flux variations in active black holes.

X‐Ray Spectral Variability of Extreme BL Lacertae Active Galactic Nucleus H1426+428

Abstract:Between 2002 March 7 and 2002 June 15, intensive X-ray observations were carried out on the extreme BL Lac object H1426+428 with instruments on board the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer (RXTE). These instruments provide measurements of H1426+428 in the crucial energy range that characterizes the first peak of its spectral energy distribution. This peak, which is almost certainly due to synchrotron emission, has previously been inferred to be in excess of 100 keV. By taking frequent observations over a four-month campaign, which included similar to450 ks of RXTE time, studies of flux and spectral variability on multiple timescales were performed, along with studies of spectral hysteresis. The 3-24 keV X-ray flux and spectra exhibited significant variability, implying variability in the location of the first peak of the spectral energy distribution. Hysteresis patterns were observed, and their characteristics have been discussed within the context of emission models.

Abstract:We present a detailed power-density spectrum and cross-correlation analysis of the X-ray light curves of the BL Lac object PKS 2155-304, observed with BeppoSAX in 1997 (SAX97) and 1996 (SAX96), aimed at exploring the rapid variability properties and the interband cross-correlations in the X-rays. We also perform the same analysis on the (archival) X-ray light curve obtained with ASCA in 1994 (ASCA94). No large amplitude-variability event on a timescale of less than ~1 hr is found, and light curves in different energy bands are highly correlated with a tendency for the amplitude of variability to increase with energy. The amplitude of variability is larger and the (fastest) timescale shorter as the source becomes brighter. Furthermore, while the average power-density spectra of all the light curves present pronounced, featureless, red noise spectra, with the power decreasing toward high temporal frequencies, the power-law slopes are somewhat different, indicating different variability properties among the three observations. We perform a cross-correlation analysis using Monte Carlo simulations to estimate the uncertainties on time lags between different bands. A significant soft lag of ~4 hr between the 0.1-1.5 and 3.5-10 keV bands is seen in SAX96. During SAX97, in which the source showed a high X-ray state correlated with a highly active phase in gamma rays, a short soft lag (~0.4 hr) is detected between the same energy bands. In contrast, ASCA94 presents an intermediate soft lag of about 0.8 hr. These findings indicate that the interband soft time lags are variable and suggest that the lag is longer when the source is fainter. The time dependence of variability in PKS 2155-304 is briefly discussed within a homogeneous synchrotron scenario for blazars.
Modeling multiband SEDs and light curves of BL Lacertae using a time-dependent shock-in-jet model

Abstract:The origin of fast flux variability in blazars is a long-standing problem, with many theoretical models proposed to explain it. In this study, we focus on BL Lacertae to model its spectral energy distribution (SED) and broadband light curves using a diffusive shock acceleration process involving multiple mildly relativistic shocks, coupled with a time-dependent radiation transfer code. BL Lacertae was the target of a comprehensive multiwavelength monitoring campaign in early July 2021. We present a detailed investigation of the source's broadband spectral and light curve features using simultaneous observations at optical-UV frequencies with Swift-UVOT, in X-rays with Swift-XRT and AstroSat-SXT/LAXPC, and in gamma-rays with Fermi-LAT, covering the period from July to August 2021 (MJD 59400 to 59450). A fractional variability analysis shows that the source is most variable in gamma-rays, followed by X-rays, UV, and optical. This allowed us to determine the fastest variability time in gamma-rays to be on the order of a few hours. The AstroSat-SXT and LAXPC light curves indicate X-ray variability on the order of a few kiloseconds. Modeling simultaneously the SEDs of low and high flux states of the source and the multiband light curves provided insights into the particle acceleration mechanisms at play. This is the first instance of a physical model that accurately captures the multi-band temporal variability of BL Lacertae, including the hour-scale fluctuations observed during the flare.

Long-term hard X-ray variability properties of Swift-BAT blazars

Abstract:We present results from the first dedicated study in the time domain of the hard X-ray variability behavior of blazars on long timescales based on $\sim$13 years of continuous hard X-ray data in the 14-195 keV band. We use monthly-binned data from the recent 157-month Swift-BAT catalog to characterize the hard X-ray variability of 127 blazars and search for potential differences between the variability of BL Lacertae objects (BL Lacs) and flat-spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs). A significant portion of the blazars in the sample ($\sim$37%) do not show statistically significant hard X-ray variability on monthly timescales, which is deeply at odds with previous studies that show that blazars are highly variable in the X-rays and other energy bands on a wide range of timescales. We also find that, on average, the FSRQs and BL Lacs for which we do detect variability exhibit similar flux variability; this suggests that the variability in these FSRQs is not necessarily driven by variations in the source function of scattered external radiation arriving from extended regions, and that it is instead possibly driven by processes that lead to variations in particle injection. In addition, only five blazars in our sample show significant spectral variability in the long-term light curves. For 3 blazars, we find that a power law that changes slope on monthly timescales is sufficient to characterize the variable hard X-ray spectrum, suggesting that, at least for some bright blazars, the long-term spectra in the hard X-rays may be described in a relatively simple fashion.

Probing X-ray Timing and Spectral Variability in the Blazar PKS 2155-304 Over a Decade of XMM-Newton Observations

Abstract:Blazars, a class of active galactic nuclei (AGN) powered by supermassive black holes, are known for their remarkable variability across multiple timescales and wavelengths. With advancements in both ground- and space-based telescopes, our understanding of AGN central engines has significantly improved. However, the mechanisms driving this variability remain elusive, and continue to fascinate both theorists and observers alike. The primary objective of this study is to constrain the X-ray variability properties of the TeV blazar PKS 2155-304. We conduct a comprehensive X-ray spectral and timing analysis, focusing on both long-term and intra-day variability. This analysis uses data from 22 epochs of XMM-Newton EPIC-pn observations, collected over 15 years (2000-2014). To investigate the variability of the source, we applied both timing and spectral analyses. For the timing analysis, we estimated fractional variability, variability amplitude, minimum variability timescales, flux distribution, and power spectral density (PSD). In the spectral analysis, we fitted the X-ray spectra using power-law, log-parabola, and broken power-law (BPL) models to determine the best-fitting parameters. Additionally, we studied the hardness ratio (HR). We observed moderate intra-day variability in most of the light curves. Seven out of the twenty-two observations showed a clear bimodal flux distribution, indicating the presence of two distinct flux states. Our analysis revealed a variable power-law PSD slope. Most HR plots did not show significant variation with flux, except for one observation (OBSID 0124930501), where HR increased with flux (Count/s). The fitted X-ray spectra favored the BPL model for the majority of observations. The findings of this work shed light on the intraday variability of blazars, providing insights into the non-thermal jet processes that drive the observed flux variations.

Abstract:Unexpectedly strong X-ray emission from extragalactic radio jets on kiloparsec scales has been one of the major discoveries of Chandra, the only X-ray observatory capable of sub-arcsecond-scale imaging. The origin of this X-ray emission, which appears as a second spectral component from that of the radio emission, has been debated for over two decades. The most commonly assumed mechanism is inverse Compton upscattering of the Cosmic Microwave Background (IC-CMB) by very low-energy electrons in a still highly relativistic jet. Under this mechanism, no variability in the X-ray emission is expected. Here we report the detection of X-ray variability in the large-scale jet population, using a novel statistical analysis of 53 jets with multiple Chandra observations. Taken as a population, we find that the distribution of p-values from a Poisson model is strongly inconsistent with steady emission, with a global p-value of 1.96e-4 under a Kolmogorov-Smirnov test against the expected Uniform (0,1) distribution. These results strongly imply that the dominant mechanism of X-ray production in kpc-scale jets is synchrotron emission by a second population of electrons reaching multi-TeV energies. X-ray variability on the time-scale of months to a few years implies extremely small emitting volumes much smaller than the cross-section of the jet.

Constraining X-ray variability of the blazar 3C 273 using XMM-Newton observations over two decades

Abstract:Blazars exhibit relentless variability across diverse spatial and temporal frequencies. The study of long- and short-term variability properties observed in the X-ray band provides insights into the inner workings of the central engine. In this work, we present timing and spectral analyses of the blazar 3C 273 using the X-ray observations from the $\textit{XMM-Newton}$ telescope covering the period from 2000 to 2020. The methods of timing analyses include estimation of fractional variability, long- and short-term flux distribution, rms-flux relation, and power spectral density analysis. The spectral analysis include estimating a model independent flux hardness ratio and fitting the observations with multiplicative and additive spectral models such as \textit{power-law}, \textit{log-parabola}, \textit{broken power-law}, and \textit{black body}. The \textit{black body} represents the thermal emission from the accretion disk, while the other models represent the possible energy distributions of the particles emitting synchrotron radiation in the jet. During the past two decades, the source flux changed by of a factor of three, with a considerable fractional variability of 27\%. However, the intraday variation was found to be moderate. Flux distributions of the individual observations were consistent with a normal or log-normal distribution, while the overall flux distribution including entire observations appear to be rather multi-modal and of a complex shape. The spectral analyses indicate that \textit{log-parabola} added with a \textit{black body} gives the best fit for most of the observations. The results indicate a complex scenario in which the variability can be attributed to the intricate interaction between the disk/corona system and the jet.

Characterising X-ray variability in light curves with complex sampling patterns: Application to the eROSITA south ecliptic pole survey

Abstract:Aims : During its all-sky survey phase, the extended ROentgen Survey with an Imaging Telescope Array (eROSITA) X-ray telescope on board the Spectrum-Roentgen-Gamma (SRG) spacecraft scans through the ecliptic poles every 4 hours. This extensive data set of long-duration, frequent, and consistent observations of thousands of X-ray sources is ideal for a detailed long-term X-ray-variability analysis. However, individual observations are short, are separated by long but consistent gaps, and have varying exposure times. Therefore, the identification of variable sources and the characterisation and quantification of their variability requires a unique methodology. We aim to develop and evaluate variability analysis methods for eROSITA observations, focusing on sources close to the survey poles. We also aim to detect intrinsically variable sources at any count rate and quantify the variability of low-count-rate sources. Methods : We simulate eROSITA-like light curves to evaluate and quantify the effect of survey mode observations on the measured periodogram and normalised excess variance. We introduce a new method for estimating the normalised intrinsic variance of a source based on the Bayesian excess variance (bexvar) method. Results : We determine thresholds for identifying likely variable sources while minimising the false-positive rate, as a function of the number of bins, and the average count rate in the light curve. The bexvar normalised intrinsic variance estimate is significantly more accurate than the normalised excess variance method in the Poisson regime. At high count rates, the two methods are comparable. We quantify the scatter in the intrinsic variance of a stationary pink-noise process, and investigate how to reduce it. Finally, we determine a description of the excess noise in a periodogram caused by varying exposure times throughout a light curve. Although most of these methods were developed specifically for analysing variable active galactic nuclei in the eROSITA all-sky survey, they can also be used for the variability analysis of other datasets from other telescopes, with slight modifications.

X-ray Intraday Variability of the TeV Blazar Mrk 421 with {\it Chandra}

Abstract:We present an extensive study of 72 archival Chandra light curves of the high-frequency-peaked type blazar Mrk 421, the first strong extragalactic object to be detected at TeV energies. Between 2000 and 2015 Mrk 421 often displayed intraday variability in the 0.3-10.0 keV energy range, as quantified through fractional variability amplitudes that range up to 21.3 per cent. A variability duty cycle of ~84 per cent is present in these data. Variability timescales, with values ranging from 5.5 to 30.5 ks, appear to be present in seven of these observations. Discrete correlation function analyses show positive correlations between the soft (0.3-2.0 keV) and hard (2.0-10.0 keV) X-ray energy bands with zero time lags, indicating that very similar electron populations are responsible for the emission of all the X-rays observed by Chandra. The hardness ratios of this X-ray emission indicate a general "harder-when-brighter" trend in the spectral behaviour of Mrk 421. Spectral index-flux plots provide model independent indications of the spectral evolution of the source and information on the X-ray emission mechanisms. Brief discussions of theoretical models that are consistent with these observations are given.

X-ray Variability as a Probe of Advection-Dominated Accretion in Low-Luminosity AGN

Abstract:As a class, LINERs and Low-Luminosity AGN tend to show little or no significant short-term variability (i.e., with time-scales less than a day). This is a marked break for the trend of increased variability in Seyfert 1 galaxies with decreased luminosity. We propose that this difference is due to the lower accretion rate in LINERs and LLAGN which is probably causing the accretion flow to be advection-dominated. This results in a larger characteristic size for the X-ray producing region than is the case in ``normal'' AGN. Short-term variability may be caused by a localized instability or occultation events, but we note that such events would likely be accompanied by broad-band spectral changes. Since the ADAF is more compact in a Kerr metric, it is possible that the X-ray emission from ADAFs around rotating blackholes would be more variable than X-ray emission from ADAFs in a Schwarzchild metric. Similar variability arguments also apply to other wavelengths, and accordingly multiwavelength monitoring of LLAGN could serve to ``map'' the ADAF regions.

Abstract:We explored the statistical properties of short-term X-ray variability using long-exposure {\it XMM-Newton} data during high X-ray variability phases of blazars S5 0716+714 and PKS 2155-304. In general, hardness ratio shows correlated variations with the source flux state (count rate), but in a few cases, mainly the bright phases, the trend is complex with correlation and anti-correlation both, indicating spectral evolution. Stationarity tests suggest the time series as non-stationarity or have trend stationarity. Except for one, none of the histograms fit resulted in a reduced-$\chi^2 \sim 1$ for a normal and log-normal profile but a normal profile is favored in general. On the contrary, the Anderson-Darling test favors lognormal with a test-statistic value lower for log-normal over normal for all the observations, even if out of significance limits. None of the IDs show linear RMS-flux relation. The contrary inferences from widely used different statistical methods indicate that a careful analysis is needed while the complex behavior of count rate with hardness ratio suggests spectral evolution over a few 10s of kilo-seconds during bright phases of the sources. In these cases, the spectrum extracted from whole observation may not be meaningful for spectral studies and certainly not a true representation of the spectral state of the source.

Abstract:Well-sampled optical and radio light curves of BL Lacertae in B, V, R, I bands and 4.8, 8.0, 14.5 GHz from 1968 to 2014 were presented in this paper. A possible $1.26 \pm 0.05$ yr period in optical bands and a $7.50 \pm 0.15$ yr period in radio bands were detected based on discrete correlation function, structure function as well as Jurkevich method. Correlations among different bands were also analyzed and no reliable time delay was found between optical bands. Very weak correlations were detected between V band and radio bands. However, in radio bands the variation at low frequency lagged that at high frequency obviously. The spectrum of BL Lacertae turned mildly bluer when the object turned brighter, and stronger bluer-when-brighter trends were found for short flares. A scenario including a precessing helical jet and periodic shocks was put forward to interpret the variation characteristics of BL Lacertae.
