Abstract:Lyman-alpha forest lines in QSO spectra have typical widths of 20-50 km/s. Low column density absorbers in cosmological simulations are large, diffuse structures, and the Hubble flow across the spatially extended absorber is usually the dominant contribution to the width of its associated absorption line. Thermal broadening is unimportant over most of the spectrum, and peculiar velocities tend to make absorption features narrower rather than broader. As a consequence of Hubble flow broadening, there is a close relation between local Lyman-alpha optical depth and local neutral hydrogen density, which is well approximated by the Gunn-Peterson formula. The physics that governs the unshocked intergalactic medium leads to a tight correlation between the neutral hydrogen density and the underlying gas and dark matter overdensity. For many purposes, it is simpler to regard a Lyman-alpha forest spectrum as a continuous, non-linear map of the density field rather than a collection of discrete lines. This continuous field view of the Lyman-alpha forest can be applied to measurement of the baryon density parameter, testing of cosmological models, and robust determination of the shape and amplitude of the primordial mass power spectrum.
Small-scale structure and the Lyman-$α$ forest baryon acoustic oscillation feature

Abstract:The baryon-acoustic oscillation (BAO) feature in the Lyman-$\alpha$ forest is one of the key probes of the cosmic expansion rate at redshifts z~2.5, well before dark energy is believed to have become dynamically significant. A key advantage of the BAO as a standard ruler is that it is a sharp feature and hence is more robust against broadband systematic effects than other cosmological probes. However, if the Lyman-$\alpha$ forest transmission is sensitive to the initial streaming velocity of the baryons relative to the dark matter, then the BAO peak position can be shifted. Here we investigate this sensitivity using a suite of hydrodynamic simulations of small regions of the intergalactic medium with a range of box sizes and physics assumptions; each simulation starts from initial conditions at the kinematic decoupling era (z~1059), undergoes a discrete change from neutral gas to ionized gas thermal evolution at reionization (z~8), and is finally processed into a Lyman-$\alpha$ forest transmitted flux cube. Streaming velocities suppress small-scale structure, leading to less violent relaxation after reionization. The changes in the gas distribution and temperature-density relation at low redshift are more subtle, due to the convergent temperature evolution in the ionized phase. The change in the BAO scale is estimated to be of the order of 0.12% at z=2.5; some of the major uncertainties and avenues for future improvement are discussed. The predicted streaming velocity shift would be a subdominant but not negligible effect (of order $0.26\sigma$) for the upcoming DESI Lyman-$\alpha$ forest survey, and exceeds the cosmic variance floor. It is hoped that this study will motivate additional theoretical work on the magnitude of the BAO shift, both in the Lyman-$\alpha$ forest and in other tracers of large-scale structure.

Abstract:We provide an analytical description of the line broadening of HI absorbers in the Lyman-alpha forest resulting from Doppler broadening and Jeans smoothing. We demonstrate that our relation captures the dependence of the line-width on column density for narrow lines in z~3 mock spectra remarkably well. Broad lines at a given column density arise when the underlying density structure is more complex, and such clustering is not captured by our model. Our understanding of the line broadening opens the way to a new method to characterise the thermal state of the intergalactic medium and to determine the sizes of the absorbing structures.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Using cosmological hydrodynamical simulations at z ∼ 0.5, we measure the thermal (bt) and non-thermal (bnt) contribution to the line broadening for the intergalactic absorbers having O vi and H i absorption well aligned in the velocity space. We find that the inferred temperature based on bt correlates strongly with the optical depth-weighted kinetic temperature of the absorbing gas, albeit with a large scatter. We show this scatter comes from the spread in the kinetic temperature of the gas contributing to the absorption and hence depends on the feedback processes and the ionizing UV background (UVB) used in the simulations. We show the distribution of bnt is also affected by both feedback processes and the ionizing UVB. Therefore, bnt derived using aligned absorbers may not be a good discriminator between the effect of microscopic turbulence and UVB. Instead, the distribution of bt and bnt together with the frequency of occurrence of the aligned absorbers can be used to place additional constraints on the parameters of the simulation for a given assumed UVB.

Physical properties and small-scale structure of the Lyman-alpha forest: Inversion of the HE 1122-1628 UVES spectrum

Abstract:We study the physical properties of the Lyman-alpha forest by applying the inversion method described by Pichon et al. (2001) to the high resolution and high S/N ratio spectrum of the z_em=2.40 quasar HE 1122-1628 obtained during Science Verification of UVES at the VLT. We compare the column densities obtained with the new fitting procedure with those derived using standard Voigt profile methods. The agreement is good and gives confidence in the new description of the Lyman-alpha forest as a continuous field as derived from our method. We show that the observed number density of lines with logN>13 and 14 is, respectively, 50 and 250 per unit redshift at z~2. We study the physical state of the gas, neglecting peculiar velocities, assuming a relation between the overdensity and the temperature. T=Tbar * rho^(2beta). There is an intrinsic degeneracy between the parameters beta and Tbar. We demonstrate that, at a fixed beta, the temperature at mean density, Tbar, can be uniquely extracted however. While applying the method to HE 1122-1628, we conclude that for 0.2<beta<0.3, 6000<Tbar<15000 K at z~2. We investigate the small scale structure of strong absorption lines using the information derived from the Lyman-beta, Lyman-gamma and Civ profiles. Introducing the Lyman-beta line in the fit allows us to reconstruct the density field up to rho~10 instead of 5 for the Lyman-alpha line only. There may be small velocity shifts ~10km.s^{-1} between the peaks in the Civ and Hi density profiles. Although the statistics is small, it seems that Civ/Hi and n_HI are anti-correlated. This could be a consequence of the high sensitivity of the Civ/Hi ratio to temperature. The presence of associated Ovi absorption, with similar profile, confirms that the gas is photo-ionized and at a temperature of T~10^5 K.

Abstract:Damped Ly\alpha\ systems (DLAs) observed in the quasar spectra are characterized by a high neutral hydrogen column density $N_{HI}>2\times 10^{20}{\rm\ cm^{-2}}$. The absorption wing profiles are often fitted using the Voigt function due to the fact that the scattering cross section near resonant line center is approximately described by the Lorentzian function. Since a hydrogen atom has infinitely many $p$ states that participate in the electric dipole interaction, the cross section starts to deviate from the Lorentzian in an asymmetric way in the line wing regions. We investigate this asymmetry in the absorption line profiles around Ly\alpha\ and Ly\beta\ as a function of the neutral hydrogen column density $N_{HI}$. In terms of $\Delta\lambda\equiv\lambda-\lambda_\alpha$ we expand the Kramers-Heisenberg formula around Ly\alpha\ to find $\sigma(\lambda)\simeq (0.5 f_{12})^2\sigma_{T}(\Delta\lambda/\lambda_\alpha)^{-2}[1+3.792 (\Delta\lambda/\lambda_\alpha)]$, where $f_{12}$ and $\sigma_T$ are the oscillator strength of Ly$\alpha$ and the Thomson scattering cross section, respectively. In terms of $\Delta\lambda_2\equiv\lambda-\lambda_\beta$ in the vicinity of Ly\beta, the total scattering cross section, given as the sum of cross sections for Rayleigh and Raman scattering, is shown to be $\sigma(\lambda)\simeq \sigma_T(0.5f_{13})^2(1+R_0) (\Delta\lambda_2/\lambda_\beta)^{-2}[1-24.68(\Delta\lambda_2/\lambda_\beta)]$ with $f_{13}$ and the factor $R_0=0.1342$ being the oscillator strength for Ly\beta\ and the ratio of Raman cross section to Rayleigh cross section, respectively. A redward asymmetry develops around Ly\alpha\ whereas a blue asymmetry is obtained for Ly\beta. The absorption center shifts are found to be almost proportional to the neutral hydrogen column density.

The effect of (strong) discrete absorption systems on the lyman alpha forest flux power spectrum

Abstract:We demonstrate that the lyman alpha forest flux power spectrum of ``randomised'' QSO absorption spectra is comparable in shape and amplitude to the flux power spectrum of the original observed spectra. In the randomised spectra a random shift in wavelength has been added to the observed absorption lines as identified and fitted with VPFIT. At 0.03 s/km <k<0.1 s/km the ``3D'' power spectrum of the randomised flux agrees with that of observed spectra within the errors. At larger scales it is still greater than 50 % of that of the observed spectra. At smaller scales the flux power spectrum is dominated by metal lines. Lines of increasing column density contribute to the ``3D'' flux power spectrum at increasingly larger scales. Lines with 13< log (N_HI/cm^{-2})<15 dominate at the peak of the ``3D'' power spectrum while strong absorbers with log (N_HI/cm^{-2})>15 dominate at large scales, k< 0.03 s/km. We further show that a fraction of up to 20 % of the mean flux decrement is contributed by strong absorbers. Analysis of the flux power spectrum which use numerical simulations with too few strong absorption systems calibrated with the observed mean flux are likely to underestimate the inferred rms fluctuation amplitude and the slope of the initial dark matter matter power spectrum. In a combined analysis with other data which constrains the dark matter power spectrum on larger scales this can result in a spurious detection of a running spectral index.

The Lyman-alpha forest in f(R) modified gravity

Abstract:In this work, we analyze the Lyman-$\alpha$ forest in cosmological hydrodynamical simulations of chameleon-type f(R) gravity with the goal to assess whether the impact of such models is detectable in absorption line statistics. We carry out a set of hydrodynamical simulations with the cosmological simulation code MG-GADGET, including star formation and cooling effects, and create synthetic Lyman-$\alpha$ absorption spectra from the simulation outputs. We statistically compare simulations with f(R) and ordinary general relativity, focusing on flux probability distribution functions (PDFs) and flux power-spectra, an analysis of the column density and line width distributions, as well as the matter power spectrum. We find that the influence of f(R) gravity on the Lyman-$\alpha$ forest is rather small. Even models with strong modifications of gravity, like $|\bar{f}_{R0}| = 10^{-4}$, do not change the statistical Lyman-$\alpha$ properties by more than 10%. The column density and line width distributions are hardly affected at all. It is therefore not possible to get competitive constraints on the background field $f_R$ using current observational data. An improved understanding of systematics in the observations and a more accurate modeling of the baryonic/radiative physics would be required to allow this in the future. The impact of f(R) on the matter power spectrum in our results is consistent with previous works.

Efficiency concerns in Privacy Preserving Association Rule Mining-Optimization of algorithm

Abstract:An interesting new direction for data mining research is the development of techniques that incorporate privacy concerns. Being an emerging field, major concentration so far has been on defining the metrics of privacy and establishing the technical feasibility of development of accurate models about aggregated data while meeting the goals of privacy. Thus the goal of the research in privacy preserving data mining focused on meeting the two ends – privacy and accuracy and the third dimension – efficiency has not been much investigated. Existence of a large number of algorithms proposed for fast mining of association rules speaks for the importance of efficiency in association rule mining. It is evident that privacy preserving in association rule mining can’t become a reality if it costs excessively in terms of running time. This project attempts to incorporate efficiency into the privacy preserving association rule mining algorithm MASK wile ensuring that it does not incur a heavy cost on the other two goals of privacy and accuracy. The performance results have been compared with those of the unoptimized version of MASK on distorted database as well as with the well known algorithm Apriori for association rule mining on original database.
New Constraints on Warm Dark Matter from the Lyman-$α$ Forest Power Spectrum

Abstract:The forest of Lyman-$\alpha$ absorption lines detected in the spectra of distant quasars encodes information on the nature and properties of dark matter and the thermodynamics of diffuse baryonic material. Its main observable -- the 1D flux power spectrum (FPS) -- should exhibit a suppression on small scales and an enhancement on large scales in warm dark matter (WDM) cosmologies compared to standard $\Lambda$CDM. Here, we present an unprecedented suite of 1080 high-resolution cosmological hydrodynamical simulations run with the Graphics Processing Unit-accelerated code Cholla to study the evolution of the Lyman-$\alpha$ forest under a wide range of physically-motivated gas thermal histories along with different free-streaming lengths of WDM thermal relics in the early Universe. A statistical comparison of synthetic data with the forest FPS measured down to the smallest velocity scales ever probed at redshifts $4.0\lesssim z\lesssim 5.2$ (Boera et al. 2019) yields a lower limit $m_{\rm WDM}>3.1$ keV (95 percent CL) for the WDM particle mass and constrains the amplitude and spectrum of the photoheating and photoionizing background produced by star-forming galaxies and active galactic nuclei at these redshifts. Interestingly, our Bayesian inference analysis appears to weakly favor WDM models with a peak likelihood value at the thermal relic mass of $m_{\rm WDM}=4.5$ keV. We find that the suppression of the FPS from free-streaming saturates at $k\gtrsim 0.1\,\mathrm{s}\,\mathrm{km}^{-1}$ because of peculiar velocity smearing, and this saturated suppression combined with a slightly lower gas temperature provides a moderately better fit to the observed small-scale FPS for WDM cosmologies.

Abstract:We study the galaxy number density (smoothed on a 5h^{-1} Mpc scale) around 18 low-redshift Lyman-alpha absorbers previously observed with HST. The absorbers lie in the foregrounds of Mrk 335, Mrk 421, Mrk 501, I Zw 1, and 3C 273, all within regions where there are now complete redshift surveys to m_{Zw}=15.5. We construct a smoothed galaxy number density field from the redshift survey data and determine the distribution of densities at the Lyman-alpha absorber locations. We also find the distribution of galaxy number density for a variety of test samples: all galaxy locations within the Center for Astrophysics Redshift Survey (CfA2), CfA2 galaxy locations along randomly selected lines of sight (LOS), and randomly chosen redshifts along random LOS. The Lyman-alpha absorbers are present in dense regions of the survey, but occur far more frequently in underdense regions than do typical luminous galaxies. The distribution of smoothed galaxy density around the Lyman-alpha absorbers is inconsistent at the 4-sigma level with the density distribution around survey galaxies. It is highly consistent with a density distribution at randomly chosen redshifts along random LOS. This supports earlier evidence that the nearby, low column density (log N_{HI} < 14) Lyman-alpha forest systems are spatially distributed at random; they are not well correlated with the local large-scale structure.

Bimodality in Damped Lyman alpha Systems

Abstract:We report evidence for a bimodality in damped Ly systems (DLAs). Using [C II] 158 mu cooling rates, lc, we find a distribution with peaks at lc=10^-27.4 and 10^-26.6 ergs s^-1 H^-1 separated by a trough at lc^crit ~= lc < 10^-27.0 ergs s^-1 H^-1. We divide the sample into low cool DLAs with lc < lc^crit and high cool DLAs with lc > lc^crit and find the Kolmogorv-Smirnov probabilities that velocity width, metallicity, dust-to-gas ratio, and Si II equivalent width in the two subsamples are drawn from the same parent population are small. All these quantities are significantly larger in the high cool population, while the H I column densities are indistinguishable in the two populations. We find that heating by X-ray and FUV background radiation is insufficient to balance the cooling rates of either population. Rather, the DLA gas is heated by local radiation fields. The rare appearance of faint, extended objects in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field rules out in situ star formation as the dominant star-formation mode for the high cool population, but is compatible with in situ star formation as the dominant mode for the low cool population. Star formation in the high cool DLAs likely arises in Lyman Break galaxies. We investigate whether these properties of DLAs are analogous to the bimodal properties of nearby galaxies. Using Si II equivalent width as a mass indicator, we construct bivariate distributions of metallicity, lc, and areal SFR versus the mass indicators. Tentative evidence is found for correlations and parallel sequences, which suggest similarities between DLAs and nearby galaxies. We suggest that the transition-mass model provides a plausible scenario for the bimodality we have found. As a result, the bimodality in current galaxies may have originated in DLAs.

The impact of feedback from galaxy formation on the Lyman-alpha transmitted flux

Abstract:The forest of Lyman-alpha absorption lines seen in the spectra of distant quasars has become an important probe of the distribution of matter in the Universe. We use large, hydrodynamical simulations from the OWLS project to investigate the effect of feedback from galaxy formation on the probability distribution function and the power spectrum of the Lyman-alpha transmitted flux. While metal-line cooling is unimportant, both galactic outflows from massive galaxies driven by active galactic nuclei and winds from low-mass galaxies driven by supernovae have a substantial impact on the flux statistics. At redshift z=2.25, the effects on the flux statistics are of a similar magnitude as the statistical uncertainties of published data sets. The changes in the flux statistics are not due to differences in the temperature-density relation of the photo-ionised gas. Instead, they are caused by changes in the density distribution and in the fraction of hot, collisionally ionised gas. It may be possible to disentangle astrophysical and cosmological effects by taking advantage of the fact that they induce different redshift dependencies. In particular, the magnitude of the feedback effects appears to decrease rapidly with increasing redshift. Analyses of Lyman-alpha forest data from surveys that are currently in process, such as BOSS/SDSS-III and X-Shooter/VLT, must take galactic winds into account.

Fluctuations in the High-Redshift Lyman-Werner and Lyman-alpha Radiation Backgrounds

Abstract:We use a new method to model fluctuations of the Lyman-Werner (LW) and Lyman-alpha radiation backgrounds at high redshift. At these early epochs the backgrounds are symptoms of a universe newly lit with its first stars. LW photons (11.5-13.6 eV) are of particular interest because they dissociate molecular hydrogen, the primary coolant in the first minihalos. By using a variation of the halo model, we efficiently generate power spectra for any choice of radiation background. We find that the LW power spectrum typically traces the matter power spectrum at large scales but turns over at the scale corresponding to the effective `horizon' of LW photons (~100 comoving Mpc), unless the sources are extremely rare. The series of horizons that characterize the Lyman-alpha flux profile shape the fluctuations of that background in a similar fashion, though those imprints are washed out once one considers fluctuations in the brightness temperature of the 21-cm signal. The Lyman-alpha background strongly affects the redshifted 21-cm signal at just about the time the LW background begins to dissociate molecular hydrogen, so measuring that background's properties will reveal important information about the transition from early Population III stars to more normal stars. Around this time we find that fluctuations in the LW background are weak; the fractional standard deviation is less than ~0.5 on scales > 10 cMpc, only rising to be of order unity on scales < 1 cMpc. This should not lead to substantial spatial fluctuations in molecular hydrogen content, except at the earliest times. Even then, most halos form far from other sources, so the transition from star formation in low-mass to high-mass halos is rather homogeneous across the universe.

A modified lognormal approximation of the Lyman-$α$ forest: comparison with full hydrodynamic simulations at $2\leq z\leq 2.7$

Abstract:Observations of the Lyman-$\alpha$ forest in distant quasar spectra with upcoming surveys are expected to provide significantly larger and higher-quality datasets. To interpret these datasets, it is imperative to develop efficient simulations. One such approach is based on the assumption that baryonic densities in the intergalactic medium (IGM) follow a lognormal distribution. We extend our earlier work to assess the robustness of the lognormal model of the Lyman-$\alpha$ forest in recovering the parameters characterizing IGM state, namely, the mean-density IGM temperature ($T_0$), the slope of the temperature-density relation ($\gamma$), and the hydrogen photoionization rate ($\Gamma_{12}$), by comparing with high-resolution Sherwood SPH simulations across the redshift range $2 \leq z \leq 2.7$. These parameters are estimated through a Markov Chain Monte Carlo technique, using the mean and power spectrum of the transmitted flux. We find that the usual lognormal distribution of IGM densities cannot recover the parameters of the SPH simulations. This limitation arises from the fact that the SPH baryonic density distribution cannot be described by a simple lognormal form. To address this, we extend the model by scaling the linear density contrast by a parameter $\nu$. While the resulting baryonic density is still lognormal, the additional parameter gives us extra freedom in setting the variance of density fluctuations. With this extension, values of $T_0$ and $\gamma$ implied in the SPH simulations are recovered at $\sim 1-\sigma$ ($\lesssim$ 10%) of the median (best-fit) values for most redshifts bins. However, this extended lognormal model cannot recover $\Gamma_{12}$ reliably, with the best-fit value discrepant by $\gtrsim 3-\sigma$ for $z > 2.2$. Despite this limitation in the recovery of $\Gamma_{12}$, we argue that the model remains useful for constraining cosmological parameters.

Extended Ly-alpha emission from a damped Ly-alpha absorber at z = 1.93, and the relation between DLAs and Lyman-break galaxies

Abstract:The number of damped Ly-alpha absorbers (DLAs) currently known is about 100, but our knowledge of their sizes and morphologies is still very sparse as very few have been detected in emission. Here we present narrow-band and broad-band observations of a DLA in the field of the quasar pair Q0151+048A (qA) and Q0151+048B (qB). These two quasars have very similar redshifts z_em = 1.922, 1.937, respectively, and an angular separation of 3.27 arcsec. The spectrum of qA contains a DLA at z_abs = 1.9342 (close to the emission redshift) which shows an emission line in the trough, detected at 4 sigma. Our narrow-band image confirms this detection and we find Ly-alpha emission from an extended area covering 6x3 arcsec^2, corresponding to 25x12h^-2 kpc^2 (q0=0.5, H0 = 100h km s^-1). The total Ly-alpha luminosity from the DLA is 1.2 x 10^43 h^-2 erg s^-1, which is a factor of several higher than the Ly-alpha luminosity found from other DLAs. The narrow-band image also indicates that qB is not covered by the DLA. This fact, together with the large equivalent width of the emission line from the Ly-alpha cloud, the large luminosity, and the 300 km s^-1 blueshift relative to the DLA, can plausibly be explained if qB is the sourceof a Lyman-limit system. We also consider the relation between DLAs and Lyman-break galaxies (LBGs). If DLAs are gaseous disks surrounding LBGs, and if the apparent brightnesses and impact parameters of the few identified DLAs are representative of the brighter members of the population, then the luminosity distribution of DLAs is nearly flat, and we would expect that some 70% of the galaxy counterparts to DLAs at z=3 are fainter than m_R=28.

Abstract:The amplitude of the metagalactic ultraviolet background (UVB) at large-scales is impacted by two factors. First, it naturally attenuates at scales larger than mean-free-path of UVB photons due to the absorption by neutral intergalactic medium. Second, there are discrete and rare ionizing sources distributing in the Universe, emitting the UVB photons, and thus enhancing the local UVB amplitude. Therefore, for cosmological probe that is sensitive to the UVB amplitude and capable of detecting the large scale like Lyman-$\alpha$ forest spectrum, the fluctuation due to the clustering of ionizing sources becomes a significant factor for Lyman-$\alpha$ flux transmission and leave imprints on Lyman-$\alpha$ flux power spectrum at these large scales. In this work, we make use of a radiative transfer model that parametrizes the UVB source distribution by its bias $b_{\rm j}$ and shot noise $\overline{n}_{\rm j}$. We estimate the constraints on this model through the cross-correlation between Lyman-$\alpha$ forest survey and galaxy survey, using the DESI Lyman-$\alpha$ forest survey and the Roman Space Telescope emission line galaxy survey as an example. We show the detection sensitivity improvement for UVB parameters from disjoint to maximal overlap of DESI+Roman survey strategy. We also show that the degeneracy of two ionizing source parameters can be broken by increasing the overlapping survey area. Our results motivate survey strategies more dedicated to probe the UVB large-scale fluctuations.

Abstract:Accurate modeling for the evolution of the Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) is essential for using it as a standard ruler to probe cosmology. We explore the non-linearity of the BAO in different environments using the density-split statistics and compare them to the case of the conventional two-point correlation function (2PCF). We detect density-dependent shifts for the position of the BAO with respect to its linear version using halos from N-body simulations. Around low/high-densities, the scale of the BAO expands/contracts due to non-linear peculiar velocities. As the simulation evolves from redshift 1 to 0, the difference in the magnitude of the shifts between high- and low-density regions increases from the sub-percent to the percent level. In contrast, the scale of the BAO does not evolve in the total 2PCF in the same redshift range. The width of the BAO around high density regions increases as the universe evolves, similar to the known broadening of the BAO in the 2PCF due to non-linear evolution. In contrast, the width is smaller and stable for low density regions. We discuss possible implications for the reconstructions of the BAO in light of our results.
