Abstract:Objective. Oxaliplatin-induced peripheral neurotoxicity continues to be a kind of frequent dose-limiting toxicity for many cancer patients. This study evaluated the preventive effects of Guilongtongluofang on peripheral neurotoxicity induced by oxaliplatin in patients with colorectal tumor. Patients and Methods. From May 2007 to May 2011, we conducted a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. 120 patients of colorectal cancer treated with adjuvant oxaliplatin-based chemotherapy were randomly enrolled into the trial group and the control group. The trial group received Guilongtongluofang (at a dose of 200 mL once a day) from 3 days prior to chemotherapy. The control group received a placebo from 3 days prior to chemotherapy. Every 2-week cycle, neurotoxicity was evaluated using numeric rating scale for pain intensity and experienced relief. The primary endpoint was efficacy measurement which included oxaliplatin-induced neurotoxicity and tumor response. The differences of side effects between the two groups were also analyzed. Results. The percentage of grades 1-2 neurotoxicity was significantly lower in the trial group than that in the control group (13.3% versus 20.0%; P < 0.05) after two cycles of treatment. The difference of the percentage of neurotoxicity between the two groups was significant after six cycles (51.7% versus 70.0%; P < 0.05). Significant difference for the mean time to the development of grade 1+ neurotoxicity was found between the two groups (9.4 w in the trial group versus 6.5 w in the control group, P < 0.05). The cumulative incidence of grade 1 or more sensory neurotoxicity was significantly lower in the trial group than that in the control group (P < 0.05). No significant differences of tumor response rate were found between the two groups the trial group and the control group. No significant difference was found between the trial group and the control group (all P > 0.05). Conclusion. This study provides evidence that Guilongtongluofang is a promising drug for the prevention of oxaliplatin-induced neurotoxicity in patients with colorectal cancer, and it does not reduce the efficacy of oxaliplatin.
X-ray Observations of Complex Temperature Structure in the Cool-core cluster Abell 85

Abstract:X-ray observations were used to examine the complex temperature structure of Abell 85, a cool-core galaxy cluster. Temperature features can provide evidence of merging events which shock heat the intracluster gas. Temperature maps were made from both \textit{Chandra} and \textit{XMM-Newton} obervations. The combination of a new, long-exposure \textit{XMM} observation and an improved temperature map binning technique produced the highest fidelity temperature maps of A85 to date. Hot regions were detected near the subclusters to the South and Southwest in both the \textit{Chandra} and \textit{XMM} temperature maps. The presence of these structures implies A85 is not relaxed. The hot regions may indicate the presence of shocks. The Mach numbers were estimated to be $\sim$1.9 at the locations of the hot spots. Observational effects will tend to systematically reduce temperature jumps, so the measured Mach numbers are likely underestimated. Neither temperature map showed evidence for a shock in the vicinity of the presumed radio relic near the Southwest subcluster. However, the presence of a weak shock cannot be ruled out. There was tension between the temperatures measured by the two instruments.

The Merger Dynamics of the Galaxy Cluster Abell 1775: New Insights from Chandra and XMM-Newton for a Cluster Simultaneously Hosting a WAT and a NAT Radio Sources

Abstract: We present a new study of the merger dynamics of Abell~1775 by analyzing the high-quality Chandra and XMM-Newton archival data. We confirm/identify an arc-shaped edge (i.e., the head) at $\sim48$~kpc west of the X-ray peak, a split cold gas tail that extends eastward to $\sim163$~kpc, and a plume of spiral-like X-ray excess (within about $81-324$~kpc northeast of the cluster core) that connects to the end of the tail. The head, across which the projected gas temperature rises outward from $3.39_{-0.18}^{+0.28}$~keV to $5.30_{-0.43}^{+0.54}$~keV, is found to be a cold front with a Mach number of $\mathcal{M}\sim0.79$. Along the surfaces of the cold front and tail, typical KHI features (noses and wings, etc.) are found and are used to constrain the upper limit of the magnetic field ($\sim11.2~\mu$G) and the viscosity suppression factor ($\sim0.01$). Combining optical and radio evidence we propose a two-body merger (instead of systematic motion in a large-scale gas environment) scenario and have carried out idealized hydrodynamic simulations to verify it. We find that the observed X-ray emission and temperature distributions can be best reproduced with a merger mass ratio of 5 after the first pericentric passage. The NAT radio galaxy is thus more likely to be a single galaxy falling into the cluster center at a relative velocity of 2800~$\rm km~s^{-1}$, a speed constrained by its radio morphology. The infalling subcluster is expected to have a relatively low gas content, because only a gas-poor subcluster can cause central-only disturbances as observed in such an off-axis merger.

Abstract:We present a detailed imaging and spectral analysis of the merging environment of the bimodal cluster A3395 using X-ray and radio observations. X-ray images of the cluster show five main constituents of diffuse emission : A3395 NE, A3395 SW, A3395 NW, A3395 W, and a filament connecting NE to W. X-ray surface-brightness profiles of the cluster did not show any shock fronts in the cluster. Temperature and entropy maps show high temperature and high entropy regions in the W, the NW, the filament and between the NE and SW subclusters. The NE, SW and W components have X-ray bolometric luminosities similar to those of rich clusters of galaxies but have relatively higher temperatures. Similarly, the NW component has X-ray bolometric luminosity similar to that of isolated groups but with much higher temperature. It is, therefore, possible that all the components of the cluster have been heated by the ongoing mergers. The NE subcluster is the most massive and luminous constituent and other subclusters are found to be gravitationally bound to it. The W component is most probably either a clump of gas stripped off the SW due to ram pressure or a separate subcluster that has merged or is merging with the SW. No X-ray cavities are seen associated with the Wide Angle Tailed (WAT) radio source near the centre of the SW subcluster. Minimum energy pressure in the radio emission-peaks of the WAT galaxy is comparable with the external thermal pressure. The radio spectrum of the WAT suggests a spectral age of ~10Myr.

Abstract:We have observed the cluster of galaxies Abell 85 with XMM-Newton. These data have allowed us in a previous paper to confirm the existence of the extended 4 Mpc filament detected by the ROSAT PSPC in the neighbourhood of this cluster, and to determine an X-ray temperature of about ~keV. We now present a thorough analysis of the properties of the X-ray gas in the cluster itself, including temperature and metallicity maps for the entire cluster. These results show that Abell 85 had intense merging activity in the past and is not fully relaxed, even in the central region. We have also determined the individual abundances for some iron-group metals and α-elements in various regions; the ratios of these metallicities to the iron abundance show that both supernova types Ia and II must be involved in the intra-cluster gas enrichment. Spectral analysis of the central region suggests a different redshift of the X-ray emitting gas compared to the mean cluster velocity derived from galaxy member redshifts. We discuss the implications of the difference between the cD galaxy redshift, the mean galaxy redshift and the hot gas redshift, as well as the possibility of several groups being accreted on to Abell 85. Finally, we obtain the dynamical mass profile and baryon fraction taking into account the newly determined temperature profile. The dynamical mass in Abell 85 has a steep density profile, similar to the ones found in N-body simulations.

Abstract:Our XMM-Newton observations of Abell 85 confirm the extended 4 Mpc filament first detected with ROSAT, which has an X-ray temperature of about 2 keV and is probably made of groups falling on to the cluster. A comparison of the temperature map with numerical simulations show that Abell 85 had intense merging activity in the past and is not fully relaxed, even in the central region. Finally, a deprojected temperature profile has been calculated and used, together with the suface brightness, to estimate the entropy and pressure profiles. Abell 85 only presents a mild flattening of the entropy profile in the center, showing no evidence of an ``entropy floor''.

Abstract:We present deep XMM-Newton, Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array, and upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope observations of Abell 746, a cluster that hosts a plethora of diffuse emission sources that provide evidence for the acceleration of relativistic particles. Our new XMM-Newton images reveal a complex morphology of the thermal gas with several substructures. We observe an asymmetric temperature distribution across the cluster: the southern regions exhibit higher temperatures, reaching ∼9 keV, while the northern regions have lower temperatures (≤4 keV), likely due to a complex merger. We find evidence of three surface brightness edges and one candidate edge, of which three are merger-driven shock fronts. Combining our new data with published LOw-Frequency ARray observations has unveiled the nature of diffuse sources in this system. The bright NW relic shows thin filaments and a high degree of polarization with aligned magnetic field vectors. We detect a density jump, aligned with the fainter relic to the north. To the south, we detect high-temperature regions, consistent with the shock-heated regions and a density jump coincident with the northern tip of the southern radio structure. Its integrated spectrum shows a high-frequency steepening. Lastly, we find that the cluster hosts large-scale radio halo emission. A comparison of the thermal and nonthermal emission reveals an anticorrelation between the bright radio and X-ray features at the center. Our findings suggest that Abell 746 is a complex system that involves multiple mergers.

Abstract:ABSTRACT We present the results of deep Chandra and XMM–Newton observations of a complex merging galaxy cluster Abell 2256 (A2256) that hosts a spectacular radio relic (RR). The temperature and metallicity maps show clear evidence of a merger between the western subcluster (SC) and the primary cluster (PC). We detect five X-ray surface brightness edges. Three of them near the cluster centre are cold fronts (CFs): CF1 is associated with the infalling SC; CF2 is located in the east of the PC; and CF3 is located to the west of the PC core. The other two edges at cluster outskirts are shock fronts (SFs): SF1 near the RR in the NW has Mach numbers derived from the temperature and the density jumps, respectively, of MT = 1.62 ± 0.12 and Mρ = 1.23 ± 0.06; SF2 in the SE has MT = 1.54 ± 0.05 and Mρ = 1.16 ± 0.13. In the region of the RR, there is no evidence for the correlation between X-ray and radio substructures, from which we estimate an upper limit for the inverse-Compton emission, and therefore set a lower limit on the magnetic field (∼ 450 kpc from PC centre) of B > 1.0 μG for a single power-law electron spectrum or B > 0.4 μG for a broken power-law electron spectrum. We propose a merger scenario including a PC, an SC, and a group. Our merger scenario accounts for the X-ray edges, diffuse radio features, and galaxy kinematics, as well as projection effects.

Decoding the thermal history of the merging cluster Cygnus A

Abstract:We report on a detailed spatial and spectral analysis of the large-scale X-ray emission from the merging cluster Cygnus A. We use 2.2 Ms Chandra and 40 ks XMM-Newton archival datasets to determine the thermodynamic properties of the intracluster gas in the merger region between the two sub-clusters in the system. These profiles exhibit temperature enhancements that imply significant heating along the merger axis. Possible sources for this heating include the shock from the ongoing merger, past activity of the powerful AGN in the core, or a combination of both. To distinguish between these scenarios, we compare the observed X-ray properties of Cygnus A with simple, spherical cluster models. These models are constructed using azimuthally averaged density and temperature profiles determined from the undisturbed regions of the cluster and folded through MARX to produce simulated Chandra observations. The thermodynamic properties in the merger region from these simulated X-ray observations were used as a baseline for comparison with the actual observations. We identify two distinct components in the temperature structure along the merger axis, a smooth, large-scale temperature excess we attribute to the ongoing merger, and a series of peaks where the temperatures are enhanced by 0.5-2.5 keV. If these peaks are attributable to the central AGN, the location and strength of these features imply that Cygnus A has been active for the past 300 Myr injecting a total of $\sim$10$^{62}$ erg into the merger region. This corresponds to $\sim$10% of the energy deposited by the merger shock.

Abstract:Using the EPIC and RGS data from a deep (200 ks) XMM-Newton observation, we investigate the temperature structure (kT and σT) and the abundances of nine elements (O, Ne, Mg, Si, S, Ar, Ca, Fe, and Ni) of the intra-cluster medium (ICM) in the nearby (z = 0.046) cool-core galaxy cluster Abell 4059. Next to a deep analysis of the cluster core, a careful modelling of the EPIC background allows us to build radial profiles up to 12′ (~650 kpc) from the core. Probably because of projection effects, the temperature ICM is not found to be in single phase, even in the outer parts of the cluster. The abundances of Ne, Si, S, Ar, Ca, and Fe, but also O are peaked towards the core. The elements Fe and O are still significantly detected in the outermost annuli, which suggests that the enrichment by both type Ia and core-collapse SNe started in the early stages of the cluster formation. However, the particularly high Ca/Fe ratio that we find in the core is not well reproduced by the standard SNe yield models. Finally, 2D maps of temperature and Fe abundance are presented and confirm the existence of a denser, colder, and Fe-rich ridge south-west of the core, previously observed by Chandra. The origin of this asymmetry in the hot gas of the cluster core is still unclear, but it might be explained by a past intense ram-pressure stripping event near the central cD galaxy.

Closing Pandora's Box -- The deepest X-ray observations of Abell 2744 and a multi-wavelength merger picture

Abstract:Abell 2744, also known as Pandora's Cluster, is a complex merging galaxy cluster. While a major merger is clear along the north-south axis, the dynamical state of the northwest subcluster has been highly uncertain. We present ultra-deep ($\approx$2.1 Ms) X-ray observations of Abell 2744 obtained with the Chandra X-ray Observatory and reinterpret the multi-wavelength picture with a suite of idealised simulations of galaxy cluster mergers. The new data reveal in unprecedented detail the disruption of cool cores in the three X-ray luminous subclusters and confirm the presence of a shock to the NW. A position-velocity clustering of the cluster member galaxies shows a clearly separated S2 component, with a $\Delta z$ implying a separation of 53 Mpc or a line-of-sight velocity of $4500\ \rm{km \ s^{-1}}$, or likely some combination of the two. While binary simulations allow NW to have undergone a gravitational slingshot after the first pericenter passage, triple merger simulations rule out this scenario, because the two mergers would have had to occur $\sim$0.5 Gyr apart, and the joint impact of the shocks from the two mergers would completely disrupt the SE and NW cool cores; they only reform after 1-2 Gyr, by which point the core separations greatly exceed observations. The scenario that best describes Abell 2744 is a head-on N-S merger $0.5-0.6$ Gyrs ago followed by a first infall of the NW subcluster. Furthermore, we note that a model with three cluster-size halos, with masses consistent with gravitational lensing constraints, nevertheless produces a lensing convergence and surface brightness lower than observed in most of the field of view, whereas the temperatures are consistent with observations. This suggests the presence of a large-scale overdensity, which contributes to the diffuse emission and total surface density without heating the densest gas.

Abstract:The cluster of galaxies Abell 2146 is undergoing a major merger and is an ideal cluster to study ICM physics, as it has a simple geometry with the merger axis in the plane of the sky, its distance allows us to resolve features across the relevant scales and its temperature lies within Chandra's sensitivity. Gas from the cool core of the subcluster has been partially stripped into a tail of gas, which gives a unique opportunity to look at the survival of such gas and determine the rate of conduction in the ICM. We use deep 2.4 Ms Chandra observations of Abell 2146 to produce a high spatial resolution map of the temperature structure along a plume in the ram-pressure stripped tail, described by a partial cone, which is distinguishable from the hot ambient gas. Previous studies of conduction in the ICM typically rely on estimates of the survival time for key structures, such as cold fronts. Here we use detailed hydrodynamical simulations of Abell 2146 to determine the flow velocities along the stripped plume and measure the timescale of the temperature increase along its length. We find that conduction must be highly suppressed by multiple orders of magnitude compared to the Spitzer rate, as the energy used is about 1% of the energy available. We discuss magnetic draping around the core as a possible mechanism for suppressing conduction.

Abstract:We discuss our current progress in studying a sample of z>0.8 clusters of galaxies from the ROSAT Distant Cluster Survey. To date, we have Chandra observations for four of the ten clusters. We find that the morphology of two of these four are quite regular, with deviations from circular of less than 5%, while two are strikingly elliptical. When the temperatures and luminosities of our sample are grouped with six other high-redshift measurements, there is no measured evolution in the luminosity-temperature relation. We identify a number of X-ray emitting point sources that are potential cluster members. These could be sources of intracluster medium heating, adding the entropy necessary to explain the cluster luminosity-temperature relation.
An XMM-Newton view of the merging activity in the Centaurus cluster

Abstract:We report the results of XMM-Newton observations of the regions around the core of the Centaurus cluster where evidence for merging activity between the subgroup Cen 45 and the main Centaurus cluster has previously been observed using ASCA and ROSAT data. We confirm the ASCA findings of a temperature excess surrounding Cen 45. We find that this temperature excess can be explained using simple shock heating given the large line of sight velocity difference between Cen 45 and the surrounding main Centaurus cluster. We find that there is a statistically significant excess in metallicity around Cen 45, showing that Cen 45 has managed to retain its gas as it has interacted with the main Centaurus cluster. There is a pressure excess to the east in the direction of the merger, and there is also an entropy excess around the central galaxy of Cen 45. The metallicity between 50-100 kpc to the north of NGC 4696 is higher than to the south, which may be the result of the asymmetric distribution of metals due to previous sloshing of the core, or which may be associated with the filamentary structure we detect between NGC 4696 and NGC 4696B.

Abstract:We present the first in-depth study of X-ray emission from a nearby ($z\sim0.0784$) galaxy cluster Abell 1569 using an archival $Chandra$ observation. A1569 consists of two unbound subclusters $-$ a northern subcluster (A1569N) hosting a double-lobed radio galaxy 1233+169 at its centre, and a southern subcluster (A1569S) harbouring a wide-angle-tailed (WAT) radio source 1233+168. X-ray emission from A1569N and A1569S extends to a radius $r\sim248$ kpc and $r\sim370$ kpc, respectively, indicating that the two gas clumps are group-scale systems. The two subclusters have low X-ray luminosities ($\sim10^{42-43}$ erg s$^{-1}$), average elemental abundances $\sim$1/4 Z$_\odot$, low average temperatures ($\sim2$ keV), and lack large ($r\gtrsim40-50$ kpc) cool cores associated with the intracluster gas. We detect a pair of cavities coincident with the radio lobes of 1233+169 in A1569N. The total mechanical power associated with the cavity pair is an order of magnitude larger than the X-ray radiative loss in the cavity-occupied region, providing corroborating evidence for cavity-induced heating of the intragroup gas in A1569N. A1569S exhibits possible evidence for a small-scale cluster-subcluster merger, as indicated by its high central entropy, and the presence of local gas elongation and a density discontinuity in between the bent radio tails of 1233+168. The discontinuity is indicative of a weak merger shock with Mach Number, $M\sim1.7$. The most plausible geometry for the ongoing interaction is a head-on merger occurring between A1569S and a subcluster falling in from the west along the line bisecting the WAT tails.

Abstract:Abell 754 is a rich galaxy cluster at $z=0.0543$ and is considered the prototype of a major cluster merger. As many dynamically unrelaxed systems, it hosts diffuse radio emission on megaparsec-scales. Extended synchrotron sources in the intra-cluster medium (ICM) are commonly interpreted as evidence that a fraction of the gravitational energy released during cluster mergers is dissipated into nonthermal components. Here, we aim to use new UHF- and L-band observations to study nonthermal phenomena in Abell 754. These data are complemented with archival observations to investigate the resolved spectral properties of both the radio and X-ray cluster emission. For the first time, we employed the pipeline originally developed to calibrate data to observations. This allowed us to perform a direction-dependent calibration and obtain highly sensitive radio images in UHF and L bands that capture the extended emission with unprecedented detail. By using a large mosaic, we produced thermodynamic maps of the ICM. Our analysis reveals that the radio halo in the cluster center is bounded by the well-known shock in the eastern direction. Furthermore, in the southwest periphery, we discover an extended radio source that we classify as a radio relic that is possibly tracing a shock driven by the squeezed gas compressed by the merger, outflowing in perpendicular directions. The low-luminosity of this relic appears compatible with direct acceleration of thermal pool electrons. We interpret the observed radio and X-ray features in the context of a major cluster merger with a nonzero impact parameter. Abell 754 is a remarkable galaxy cluster showcasing exceptional features associated with the ongoing merger event. The high quality of the new data motivates further work on this system.

Abstract:We present a detailed analysis of the thermal X-ray emission from the intracluster medium (ICM) in the cool-core galaxy cluster Abell 2667 ($z=0.23$). Our goal is to detect low-temperature ($<2$ keV) X-ray emitting gas, potentially associated to a cooling flow that connects the hot ICM reservoir to the cold gas phase responsible for star formation and supermassive black hole feeding. We use new deep XMM-Newton EPIC and RGS data, combined with archival Chandra data, to perform a spectral analysis for the core region. We find 1$\sigma$ upper limits to the cooling gas fraction of $\sim$40 $\rm M_{\odot}yr^{-1}$ and $\sim$50-60 $\rm M_{\odot}yr^{-1}$ in the temperature ranges 0.5-1 keV and 1-2 keV, respectively. The lack of OVII, FeXXI-FeXXII, and FeXVII emission lines in the RGS spectra suggest that the fraction of gas cooling below 1 keV is limited to a few tens of $\rm M_{\odot}yr^{-1}$ at most. However, we detect several lines (e.g. SiXIV, MgXII, FeXXIII/FeXXIV, NeX, OVIII$\alpha$) that allow us to estimate a 1$\sigma$ upper limit for turbulent broadening of $\sim$320 km $\rm s^{-1}$, higher that other cool-core clusters such as Abell 1835, implying mechanisms that boost turbulence in Abell 2667's atmosphere. Imaging analysis of Chandra data suggests the presence of a cold front, possibly lined to sloshing or ICM cavities. However, current data do not clearly identify the physical mechanism driving turbulence. These finding indicate that Abell 2667 is similar to other low-redshift cool-core clusters, though the large upper limit on turbulence hints at significant ICM heating, which may suppress cooling for extended periods and contribute to future condensation events.
