Abstract:We summarize the theoretical description of wave packets on molecular energy levels. We review the various quantum mechanical effects which can be studied and the models that can be verified on this system. This justifies our claim that the wave packet constitutes a universal quantum object.

Abstract:We present a new evolution system for Einstein's field equations which is based on tetrad fields and conformally compactified hyperboloidal spatial hypersurfaces which reach future null infinity. The boost freedom in the choice of the tetrad is fixed by requiring that its timelike leg be orthogonal to the foliation, which consists of constant mean curvature slices. The rotational freedom in the tetrad is fixed by the 3D Nester gauge. With these conditions, the field equations reduce naturally to a first-order constrained symmetric hyperbolic evolution system which is coupled to elliptic equations for the gauge variables. The conformally rescaled equations are given explicitly, and their regularity at future null infinity is discussed. Our formulation is potentially useful for high accuracy numerical modeling of gravitational radiation emitted by inspiraling and merging black hole binaries and other highly relativistic isolated systems.

Abstract:First-order hyperbolic systems are promising as a basis for numerical integration of Einstein's equations. In previous work, the lapse and shift have typically not been considered part of the hyperbolic system and have been prescribed independently. This can be expensive computationally, especially if the prescription involves solving elliptic equations. Therefore, including the lapse and shift in the hyperbolic system could be advantageous for numerical work. In this paper, two first-order symmetrizable hyperbolic systems are presented that include the lapse and shift as dynamical fields and have only physical characteristic speeds.

First-order hyperbolic formulation of the pure tetrad teleparallel gravity theory

Abstract:Motivated by numerically solving the Einstein field equations, we derive a first-order reduction of the second-order $ f(T) $-teleparallel gravity field equations in the pure-tetrad formulation (no spin connection). We then restrict our attention to the teleparallel equivalent of general relativity (TEGR) and propose a 3+1 decomposition of the governing equations that can be used in a computational code. We demonstrate that for the matter-free space-time the obtained system of first-order equations is equivalent to the tetrad reformulation of general relativity by Estabrook, Robinson, Wahlquist, and Buchman and Bardeen and therefore also admits a symmetric hyperbolic formulation. The structure of the 3+1 equations resembles a lot of similarities with the equations of relativistic electrodynamics and the recently proposed dGREM tetrad-reformulation of general relativity.

Numerical Tests of Evolution Systems, Gauge Conditions, and Boundary Conditions for 1D Colliding Gravitational Plane Waves

Abstract:We investigate how the accuracy and stability of numerical relativity simulations of 1D colliding plane waves depends on choices of equation formulations, gauge conditions, boundary conditions, and numerical methods, all in the context of a first-order 3+1 approach to the Einstein equations, with basic variables some combination of first derivatives of the spatial metric and components of the extrinsic curvature tensor. Hyperbolic schemes, specifically variations on schemes proposed by Bona and Masso and Anderson and York, are compared with variations of the Arnowitt-Deser-Misner formulation. Modifications of the three basic schemes include raising one index in the metric derivative and extrinsic curvature variables and adding a multiple of the energy constraint to the extrinsic curvature evolution equations. Redundant variables in the Bona-Masso formulation may be reset frequently or allowed to evolve freely. Gauge conditions which simplify the dynamical structure of the system are imposed during each time step, but the lapse and shift are reset periodically to control the evolution of the spacetime slicing and the longitudinal part of the metric. We show that physically correct boundary conditions, satisfying the energy and momentum constraint equations, generically require the presence of some ingoing eigenmodes of the characteristic matrix. Numerical methods are developed for the hyperbolic systems based on decomposing flux differences into linear combinations of eigenvectors of the characteristic matrix. These methods are shown to be second-order accurate, and in practice second-order convergent, for smooth solutions, even when the eigenvectors and eigenvalues of the characteristic matrix are spatially varying.

Post-Einsteinian Effects in the General Theory of Relativity from Higher-Order Riemannian Geometry

Abstract:In Part I of this series, the author has shown how to extend the framework of Riemannian geometry so as to include infinitesimals of higher than first order. The purpose of the present contribution is to initiate an investigation into the implications of higher-order differential geometry for the general theory of relativity. As we have seen, a novel concept of inertial motion is implied in the analogue of the geodesic equation when modified to include the effects of higher infinitesimals and it therefore should not come as a surprise that it has potentially observable kinematic consequences. The route we prefer to take goes through the Einstein-Hilbert action generalized to reflect the presence of higher infinitesimals and a cosmological constant. A variational principle yields an hierarchy of field equations, which reduce to the Einsteinian case at first order. In the weak-field limit, we recover the usual relativistic equation for a moving body to leading order. To exemplify the theoretical framework, we undertake a preliminary study of the Schwarzschild solution and Friedmann-Robertson-Walker cosmology in the presence of second-order terms. But the most exciting results concern the novel effects in orbital mechanics that arise when the higher-order corrections cannot be neglected. Indeed, the higher-order Riemannian geometry predicts a modification of Newtonian dynamics corresponding to the Pioneer anomaly for a spacecraft on a hyperbolic escape trajectory from the solar system and to the flyby anomaly for the differential between ingoing and outgoing asymptotic velocities of a spacecraft passing near a rotating planet -- both of which are found to agree well with sensitive empirical findings.

Spherical Evolution of the Generalized Harmonic Gauge Formulation of General Relativity on Compactified Hyperboloidal Slices

Abstract:We report on the successful numerical evolution of the compactified hyperboloidal initial value problem in general relativity using generalized harmonic gauge. We work in spherical symmetry, using a massless scalar field to drive dynamics. Our treatment is based on the dual-foliation approach, proceeding either by using a height function or by solving the eikonal equation to map between frames. Both are tested here with a naive implementation and with hyperboloidal layers. We present a broad suite of numerical evolutions, including pure gauge perturbations, constraint violating and satisfying data with and without scalar field matter. We present calculations of spacetimes with a regular center. For black hole spacetimes we use excision to remove part of the black hole interior. We demonstrate both pointwise and norm convergence at the expected rate of our discretization. We present evolutions in which the scalar field collapses to form a black hole. Evolving nonlinear scalar field perturbations of the Schwarzschild spacetime, we recover the expected quasinormal frequencies and tail decay rates from linear theory.

Abstract:We consider nonlinear hyperbolic conservation laws, posed on a differential (n+1)-manifold with boundary referred to as a spacetime, and in which the "flux" is defined as a flux field of n-forms depending on a parameter (the unknown variable). We introduce a formulation of the initial and boundary value problem which is geometric in nature and is more natural than the vector field approach recently developed for Riemannian manifolds. Our main assumption on the manifold and the flux field is a global hyperbolicity condition, which provides a global time-orientation as is standard in Lorentzian geometry and general relativity. Assuming that the manifold admits a foliation by compact slices, we establish the existence of a semi-group of entropy solutions. Moreover, given any two hypersurfaces with one lying in the future of the other, we establish a "contraction" property which compares two entropy solutions, in a (geometrically natural) distance equivalent to the L1 distance. To carry out the proofs, we rely on a new version of the finite volume method, which only requires the knowledge of the given n-volume form structure on the (n+1)-manifold and involves the {\sl total flux} across faces of the elements of the triangulations, only, rather than the product of a numerical flux times the measure of that face.

3D Evolution of a Good-Bad-Ugly-F Model on Compactified Hyperboloidal Slices

Abstract:The Good-Bad-Ugly-F model is a system of semi-linear wave equations that mimics the asymptotic form of the Einstein field equations in generalized harmonic gauge with specific constraint damping and suitable gauge source functions. These constraint additions and gauge source functions eliminate logarithmic divergences appearing at the leading order in the asymptotic expansion of the metric components. In this work, as a step towards using compactified hyperboloidal slices in numerical relativity, we evolve this model numerically in spherical symmetry, axisymmetry and full 3d on such hyperboloidal slices. Promising numerical results are found in all cases. Our results show that nonlinear systems of wave equations with the asymptotics of the Einstein field equations in the above form can be reliably captured within hyperboloidal numerical evolution without assuming symmetry.

Abstract:We review recent efforts to re-formulate the Einstein equations for fully relativistic numerical simulations. The so-called numerical relativity (computational simulations in general relativity) is a promising research field matching with ongoing astrophysical observations such as gravitational wave astronomy. Many trials for longterm stable and accurate simulations of binary compact objects have revealed that mathematically equivalent sets of evolution equations show different numerical stability in free evolution schemes. In this article, we first review the efforts of the community, categorizing them into the following three directions: (1) modifications of the standard Arnowitt-Deser-Misner equations initiated by the Kyoto group, (2) rewriting of the evolution equations in hyperbolic form, and (3) construction of an "asymptotically constrained" system. We next introduce our idea for explaining these evolution behaviors in a unified way using eigenvalue analysis of the constraint propagation equations. The modifications of (or adjustments to) the evolution equations change the character of constraint propagation, and several particular adjustments using constraints are expected to diminish the constraint-violating modes. We propose several new adjusted evolution equations, and include some numerical demonstrations. We conclude by discussing some directions for future research.

Abstract:The dual-frame formalism leads to an approach to extend numerical relativity simulations in generalized harmonic gauge (GHG) all the way to null infinity. A major setback is that without care, even simple choices of initial data give rise to logarithmically divergent terms that would result in irregular variables and equations on the compactified domain, which would in turn prevent accurate numerical approximation. It has been shown, however, that a suitable choice of gauge and constraint addition can be used to prevent their appearance. Presently we give a first order symmetric hyperbolic reduction of general relativity in GHG on compactified hyperboloidal slices that exploits this knowledge and eradicates these log-terms at leading orders. Because of their effect on the asymptotic solution space, specific formally singular terms are systematically chosen to remain. Such formally singular terms have been successfully treated numerically in toy models and result in a formulation with the desirable property that unphysical radiation content near infinity is suppressed.

Well-posed quasi-linear second-order hyperbolic systems with applications to nonlinear elastodynamics and general relativity

Abstract:Existence, uniqueness and well-posedness for a general class of quasi-linear evolution equations on a short time interval are established. These results, generalizing those of [29], are applied to second-order quasi-linear hyperbolic systems on IR" whose solutions (u (t), il (t)) lie in the Sobolev space H~+ ix H s. Our results improve existing theorems by lowering the required value of s to s>(n/2)+ 1, or s> n/2 in case the coefficients of the highest order terms do not involve derivatives of the unknown, and by establishing continuous dependence on the initial data for these values. As consequences we obtain well-posedness of the equations of elastodynamics if s> 2.5 and of general relativity if s> l. 5; s> 3 was the best known previous value for systems of the type occuring in general relativity ([12],[16],[23]).

Abstract:This paper considers diffeomorphism invariant theories of gravity coupled to matter, with second order equations of motion. This includes Einstein-Maxwell and Einstein-scalar field theory with (after field redefinitions) the most general parity-symmetric four-derivative effective field theory corrections. A gauge-invariant approach is used to study the characteristics associated to the physical degrees of freedom in an arbitrary background solution. The symmetries of the principal symbol arising from diffeomorphism invariance and the action principle are determined. For gravity coupled to a single scalar field (i.e., a Horndeski theory) it is shown that causality is governed by a characteristic polynomial of degree 6 which factorizes into a product of quadratic and quartic polynomials. The former is defined in terms of an "effective metric" and is associated with a "purely gravitational" polarization, whereas the latter generically involves a mixture of gravitational and scalar field polarizations. The "fastest" degrees of freedom are associated with the quartic polynomial, which defines a surface analogous to the Fresnel surface in crystal optics. In contrast with optics, this surface is generically nonsingular except on certain surfaces in spacetime. It is shown that a Killing horizon is an example of such a surface. It is also shown that a Killing horizon satisfies the zeroth law of black hole mechanics. The characteristic polynomial defines a cone in the cotangent space and a dual cone in the tangent space. Abstract:The formulation of a relativistic dynamical problem as a system of Hamilton equations by respecting the principles of Relativity is a delicate task, because in their classical form the Hamilton equations require the use of a time coordinate, which of course contradicts the Relativity. Two interesting solutions have been proposed during the last century: the covariant phase space and the multisymplectic formalism. These two approaches were inspired at the beginning by different points of view. However, as shown by works by Kijowski-Szczyrba, Forger-Romero and Vitagliano, a synthetic vision of the two theories leads probably to the most satisfactory answer to the basic question of understanding the Hamiltonian structure of relativistic fields theory.

Abstract:We start with the cosmic Friedmann equations, where we adopt a novel perspective rooted in a Lagrangian formulation grounded in Newtonian mechanics and the first law of thermodynamics. Our investigation operates under the assumption that the universe is populated by either a perfect fluid or a scalar field. By elucidating the intricate interplay between the Lagrangian formulation and the cosmic Friedmann equations, we uncover the fundamental principles governing the universe's dynamics within the framework of these elemental constituents. In our concluding endeavor, we embark on the task of harmonizing the classical equations - namely, the conservation, Euler, and Poisson equations - with the principles of General Relativity. This undertaking seeks to extend these foundational equations to encompass the gravitational effects delineated by General Relativity, thus providing a comprehensive framework for understanding the behavior of matter and spacetime in the cosmic context.

Abstract:We investigate the well-posedness of the characteristic initial-boundary value problem for the Einstein equations in Bondi-like coordinates (including Bondi, double-null and affine). We propose a definition of strong hyperbolicity of a system of partial differential equations of any order, and show that the Einstein equations in Bondi-like coordinates in their second-order form used in numerical relativity do not meet it, in agreement with results of Giannakopoulos et al for specific first-order reductions. In the principal part, frozen coefficient approximation that one uses to examine hyperbolicity, we explicitly construct the general solution to identify the solutions that obstruct strong hyperbolicity. Independently, we present a first-order symmetric hyperbolic formulation of the Einstein equations in Bondi gauge, linearised about Schwarzschild, thus completing work by Frittelli. This establishes an energy norm ($L^2$ in the metric perturbations and selected first and second derivatives), in which the initial-boundary value problem, with initial data on an outgoing null cone and boundary data on a timelike cylinder or an ingoing null cone, is well-posed, thus verifying a conjecture by Giannakopoulos et al. Unfortunately, our method does not extend to the pure initial-value problem on a null cone with regular vertex.

We prove that the time of classical existence of smooth solutions to the relativistic Euler equations can be bounded from below in terms of norms that measure the "(sound) wave-part" of the data in Sobolev space and "transport-part" in higher regularity Sobolev space and Hölder spaces. The solutions are allowed to have nontrivial vorticity and entropy. We use the geometric framework from [M. M. Disconzi and J. Speck, The relativistic Euler equations: Remarkable null structures and regularity properties, Ann. Henri Poincaré 20(7) (2019) 2173–2270], where the relativistic Euler flow is decomposed into a "wave-part", that is, geometric wave equations for the velocity components, density and enthalpy, and a "transport-part", that is, transport-div-curl systems for the vorticity and entropy gradient. Our main result is that the Sobolev norm [math] of the variables in the "wave-part" and the Hölder norm [math] of the variables in the "transport-part" can be controlled in terms of initial data for short times. We note that the Sobolev norm assumption [math] is the optimal result for the variables in the "wave-part". Compared to low-regularity results for quasilinear wave equations and the three-dimensional (3D) non-relativistic compressible Euler equations, the main new challenge of the paper is that when controlling the acoustic geometry and bounding the wave equation energies, we must deal with the difficulty that the vorticity and entropy gradient are four-dimensional space-time vectors satisfying a space-time div-curl-transport system, where the space-time div-curl part is not elliptic. Due to lack of ellipticity, one cannot immediately rely on the approach taken in [M. M. Disconzi and J. Speck, The relativistic Euler equations: Remarkable null structures and regularity properties, Ann. Henri Poincaré 20(7) (2019) 2173–2270] to control these terms. To overcome this difficulty, we show that the space-time div-curl systems imply elliptic div-curl-transport systems on constant-time hypersurfaces plus error terms that involve favorable differentiations and contractions with respect to the four-velocity. By using these structures, we are able to adequately control the vorticity and entropy gradient with the help of energy estimates for transport equations, elliptic estimates, Schauder estimates and Littlewood–Paley theory.

New Black Hole Solutions of Second and First Order Formulations of Nonlinear Electrodynamics

Abstract:Inspired by the so-called Palatini formulation of General Relativity and of its modifications and extensions, we consider an analogous formulation of the dynamics of a self-interacting gauge field which is determined by non-linear extension of Maxwell's theory, usually known as nonlinear electrodynamics. In this first order formalism the field strength and the gauge potential are treated, a priori as independent, and, as such, varied independently in order to produce the field equations. Accordingly we consider within this formalism alternative and generalized non-linear Lagrangian densities. Several new spherically-symmetric objects are constructed analytically and their main properties are studied. The solutions are obtained in flat spacetime ignoring gravity and for the self-gravitating case with emphasis on black holes. As a background for comparison between the first and second order formalisms, some of the solutions are obtained by the conventional second order formalism, while for others a first order formalism is applied. Among the self-gravitating solutions we find new black holes and study their main characteristics. Some of the solutions can regularize the total energy of a point charge although their black hole counterparts are not regular.

Abstract:We solve the Einstein constraint equations for a first-order causal viscous relativistic hydrodynamic theory in the case of a conformal fluid. For such a theory, a direct application of the conformal method does not lead to a decoupling of the equations, even for constant-mean curvature initial data. We combine the conformal method applied to a background perfect fluid theory with a perturbative argument in order to obtain the result.

Linear hyperbolic equations in a double null foliation

Abstract:The Bianchi identities for the Weyl curvature tensor of a spacetime $(M, g)$ solving the vacuum Einstein equations in a double null foliation exhibit a hyperbolic structure, which can be used to obtain detailed nonlinear estimates on the null Weyl tensor components. The aim of this paper is twofold. First we discuss existence and uniqueness for solutions of first-order linear hyperbolic systems of equations in a double null foliation on an arbitrary spacetime, with initial data posed on a past null hypersurface $\underline C_0 \cup C_0$. We prove a global existence and uniqueness theorem for these systems. Then we discuss the relationship between these systems, the Bianchi equations, and the linearized Bianchi equations (the linearized Bianchi equations are obtained from the usual Bianchi equations by replacing the null Weyl tensor components with unknown tensorfields). We derive a novel algebraic constraint which must be satisfied, at every point in the spacetime, by tensorfields satisfying the linearized Bianchi equations.

Abstract:A Lagrangian density is provided, that allows to recover the Z4 evolution system from an action principle. The resulting system is then strongly hyperbolic when supplemented by gauge conditions like '1+log' or 'freezing shift', suitable for numerical evolution. The physical constraint $Z_\mu = 0$ can be imposed just on the initial data. The corresponding canonical equations are also provided. This opens the door to analogous results for other numerical-relativity formalisms, like BSSN, that can be derived from Z4 by a symmetry-breaking procedure. The harmonic formulation can be easily recovered by a slight modification of the procedure. This provides a mechanism for deriving both the field evolution equations and the gauge conditions from the action principle, with a view on using symplectic integrators for a constraint-preserving numerical evolution. The gauge sources corresponding to the 'puncture gauge' conditions are identified in this context.
