Abstract:In this paper, we study the existence of solutions to the centroaffine Minkowski problem, namely the existence of closed convex hypersurfaces in the Euclidean space R n + 1 \mathbb {R}^{n+1} with prescribed centroaffine curvature. This problem can be described as a variational problem with a functional resembling Kantorovich’s dual functional in optimal transportation. By using the Gauss curvature flow, we obtain new conditions for the existence of solutions to the problem.

Abstract:In this paper we study the existence of closed convex hypersurfaces in the Euclidean space Rn+1 such that a Weingarten curvature, regarded as a function of their unit normal, is equal to a given positive function on the unit sphere Sn. Two classical problems of this type, namely the Christoffel problem [6] and the Minkowski problem [16], which address respectively the cases of harmonic and Gauss curvature, were completely solved in the 1970’s [7,9,17]. Besides the harmonic and Gauss curvatures, the most interesting Weingarten curvatures are probably the mean curvature, or more generally the k-curvatures (1 ≤ k ≤ n)

Abstract:Let M be an n-dimensional closed hypersurface with constant mean curvature and constant scalar curvature in a unit sphere. Denote by H and S the mean curvature and the squared length of the second fundamental form. We prove that if a(n, H) <= S <= alpha( n, H)+ CnH2, where n >= 4 and H not equal 0, then S = alpha( n, H) and M is a Clifford torus Sn-1(r(1)) x S-1(r(2)). Here alpha(n, H) = n + n(3)/2(n -1) H-2 - n(n - 2)/2(n - 1) root n(2)H(4) + 4(n - 1) H-2, and C-n is a positive constant explicitly depending on n. The emphasis is that our gap theorem imposes no restriction on the range of mean curvature. Moreover, we obtain gap theorems for complete hypersurfaces with constant mean curvature and constant scalar curvature in space forms.

Abstract:We prove a Bernstein type theorem for ancient solutions to the mean curvature flow in higher codimension. Abstract:Let Vn+1 be an (n + 1)-dimensional real vector space and (F) over tilde = (alpha) over tilde phi(s) s = (beta) over tilde/(alpha) over tilde, be all (alpha, beta)-metric, where (alpha) over tilde is an Euclidean metric and (beta) over tilde is a one form. Minimal surfaces with respect to the Busemann-Hausdorff measure and the Holmes-Thompson measure are called BH-minimal and HT-minimal surfaces, respectively. We give a Bernstein type theorem for minimal graphs in (Vn+1, (F) over tilde) with n <= 7. Let (F) over tilde (b) = (alpha) over tilde phi(s), s = (beta) over tilde/(alpha) over tilde, be a Minkowski metric with b := parallel to(beta) over tilde parallel to(alpha) over tilde. We use a PDE to characterize the BH-minimal and HT-minimal graph over any hyperplane containing the origin in (Vn+1, (F) over tilde (b)). Then we prove that this PDE is an elliptic equation of mean curvature type when b is an element of [0, is an element of) for sonic constant is an element of > 0 and give a Bernstein type theorem for BH-minimal surface in (V-3, (F) over tilde (b)). BH-minimal cones with an isolated singularity at the origin are also given.

Abstract:An n-dimensional lambda-hypersurface X : M -> Rn+1 is the critical point of the weighted area functional integral(M) e(-1/4|X|2) d mu for weighted volume-preserving variations, which is also a generalization of the self-shrinking solution of the mean curvature flow. We first prove that if the L-n-norm of the second fundamental form of the lambda-hypersurface X : M -> Rn+1 with n >= 3 is less than an explicit positive constant K(n, lambda), then M is a hyperplane. Secondly, we show that if the L-n-norm of the trace-free second fundamental form of M with n >= 3 is less than an explicit positive constant D(n, lambda) and the mean curvature is suitably bounded, then M is a hyperplane. We also obtain similar results for lambda-surfaces in R-3 under L-4-curvature pinching conditions.

Abstract:For entire spacelike stationary 2-dimensional graphs in Minkowski spaces, we establish Bernstein type theorems under specific boundedness assumptions either on the W-function or on the total (Gaussian) curvature. These conclusions imply the classical Bernstein theorem for minimal surfaces in 3-dimensional Euclidean space and Calabi's theorem for spacelike maximal surfaces in 3-dimensional Minkowski space.

Abstract:Abstract 1. Introduction In this paper we are concerned with spacelike convex hypersurfaces of positive constant (Κ-hypersurfaces) or prescribed Gauss curvature in Minkowski space ℝ n, 1 (n ≧ 2). Any such hypersurface may be written locally as the graph of a convex function x n+1 = u(x), x ε ℝ n satisfying the spacelike condition (1.1) |Du| < 1 and the Monge-Ampère type equation (1.2) where ψ is a prescribed positive function (the Gauss curvature). Our main purpose is to study entire solutions on ℝ n of (1.1)–(1.2). For ψ = 1 a well known entire solution of (1.1)–(1.2) is the hyperboloid (1.3) which gives an isometric embedding of the hyperbolic space ℍ n into ℝ n, 1. Hano and Nomizu [J. Hano and K. Nomizu, On isometric immersions of the hyperbolic plane into the Lorentz-Minkowski space and the Monge-Ampère equation of a certain type, Math. Ann. 262 (1983), 245–253.] were probably the first to observe the non-uniqueness of isometric embeddings of ℍ2 in ℝ2, 1 by constructing other (geometrically distinct) entire solutions of (1.1)–(1.2) for n = 2 (and ψ ≡ 1) using methods of ordinary differential equations. Abstract:This paper continues the line of research where one shows a Bernsteintype theorem, namely, that a complete minimal submanifold of a Euclidean space has to be affine linear, by proving that its Gauss map is constant. This Gauss map is a harmonic map into some Grassmann manifold. Therefore, we need geometric conditions on the target of the Gauss map which imply that, being harmonic, it has to be constant. For this purpose, we identify a region W 1/3 in a Grassmann manifoldG(n,m,) not covered by a usualmatrix coordinate chart, with the following important property. For a complete n-submanifold M of Rn+m with n >= 3, and m >= 2, with parallel mean curvature whose image under the Gauss map is contained in a compact subset K subset of W 1/3 subset of G(n,m), we can construct strongly subharmonic functions on M and derive a priori estimates for the harmonic Gauss map, to eventually show that it is constant. While we do not know yet how close our region is to being optimal in this respect, it is substantially larger than what could be achieved previously with other methods. Consequently, this enables us to obtain substantially stronger Bernstein-type theorems in higher codimension than previously known. We also provide some new explicit computations for the example of Lawson and Osserman [18].

Abstract:We survey Bernstein-type theorems of graphical surfaces in the Euclidean space and the Lorentz-Minkowski space. More specifically, we explain several proofs of the Bernstein theorem for minimal graphs in the Euclidean 3-space. Furthermore, we show the Heinz-type mean curvature estimates for graphs in the Euclidean 3-space and space-like graphs in the Lorentz-Minkowski 3-space. As an application of these estimates, we give Bernstein-type theorems for constant mean curvature graphs in the Euclidean 3-space and constant mean curvature space-like graphs in the Lorentz-Minkowski 3-space, respectively. We also study Bernstein-type results for minimal graphs in the Euclidean 4-space and the Calabi-Bernstein theorem in the Lorentz-Minkowski 3-space.

Abstract:Concerning the value distribution problem for generalized Gauss maps, we not only generalize Fujimoto’s theorem (J Math Soc Jpn 40:235–247, 1988) to complete space-like stationary surfaces in ℝ^3,1 , but also estimate the upper bound of the number of exceptional values when the Gauss image lies in the graph of a rational function f of degree m, which is determined by the number of solutions of f(w)=w̅ , showing a sharp contrast to Bernstein type results for minimal surfaces in ℝ^4 . Moreover, we introduce the concept of conjugate similarity on SL(2,ℂ) to classify all degenerate stationary surfaces (i.e. m≤ 1 ), and establish several structure theorems for complete stationary graphs in ℝ^3,1 from the viewpoint of the degeneracy of Gauss maps.

Abstract:In this short note we study Bernstein's type theorem of translating solitons whose images of their Gauss maps are contained in compact subsets in an open hemisphere of the standard $\mathbf{S}^n$ (see Theorem 1.1). Abstract:For spacelike stationary (i.e. zero mean curvature) surfaces in 4-dimensional Lorentz space one can naturally introduce two Gauss maps and Weierstrass representation. In this paper we investigate their global geometry systematically. The total Gaussian curvature is related with the surface topology as well as the indices of the so-called good singular ends by a generalized Jorge-Meeks formula. On the other hand, as shown by a family of counter-examples to Osserman's theorem, finite total curvature no longer implies that Gauss maps extend to the ends. Interesting examples include the generalization of the classical catenoids, helicoids, the Enneper surface, and Jorge-Meeks' k-noids. Any of them could be embedded in the 4-dimensional Lorentz space, showing a sharp contrast with the case of 3-dimensional Euclidean space.

Abstract:On some specified convex supporting sets of spheres, we find a generalized longitude function $\theta $ whose level sets are totally geodesic. Given a (weakly) harmonic map $u$ into $S^n$, the composition of $\theta $ and $u$ satisfies an elliptic equation of divergence type. With the aid of Harnack’s inequalities, we establish the image shrinking property and then regularity results. Applying such results to study the Gauss image of minimal hypersurfaces in Euclidean spaces, we obtain curvature estimates and corresponding Bernstein type theorems.
