Abstract:We argue for a performance-based design of natural language grammars and their associated parsers in order to meet the constraints posed by real-world natural language understanding. This approach incorporates declarative and procedural knowledge about language and language use within an object-oriented specification framework. We discuss several message passing protocols for real-world text parsing and provide reasons for sacrificing completeness of the parse in favor of efficiency.

Building High-Performance Application Protocol Parsers on Multi-core Architectures

Abstract:Parsing packet payloads according to the syntax and semantics of an application protocol is a key step in analyzing network traffic. However, it is still a challenge to fulfill this task with high speed(10Gbps+) because parsing packets through deep-content analysis to build a corresponding syntax tree requires tremendous computing resources. Multi-core architectures provide a viable solution for building high-performance parsers for application protocols. Existing sequential application protocol parsers are hard to be reused, and building a new protocol parser from scratch is error-prone and time-consuming. This paper proposes a general and efficient approach to building high-performance parallel application protocol parsers on multi-core platforms. First, the open-source lexical analyzer FLEX is used to describe a protocol and generate a sequential parser. Then a source-to-source translation is performed to transform the sequential parser into a parallel one. Finally, an efficient parallel run-time system is built by employing lock-free design principles from top to bottom to support multi-threaded execution on multi-core processors. Experimental results show that our parsers achieve nearly 20Gbps for average HTTP packets and 5Gbps for the challenging smaller FIX packets.

Abstract:Because of the wide variety of contemporary practices used in the automatic syntactic parsing of natural languages, it has become necessary to analyze and evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of different approaches. This research is all the more necessary because there are currently no genre- and domain-independent parsers that are able to analyze unrestricted text with 100% preciseness (I use this term to refer to the correctness of analyses assigned by a parser). All these factors create a need for methods and resources that can be used to evaluate and compare parsing systems. This research describes: (1) A theoretical analysis of current achievements in parsing and parser evaluation. (2) A framework (called FEPa) that can be used to carry out practical parser evaluations and comparisons. (3) A set of new evaluation resources: FiEval is a Finnish treebank under construction, and MGTS and RobSet are parser evaluation resources in English. (4) The results of experiments in which the developed evaluation framework and the two resources for English were used for evaluating a set of selected parsers.

Abstract:This paper describes an object-oriented lexical representation language based on Unification Categorial Grammar (UCG) that encodes linguistic and semantic information uniformly as classes and objects and an efficient bottom-up parsing method for UCG using selection sets technique. The lexical representation language, implemented in the logic and object-oriented programming language LIFE, introduces several new information sharing mechanisms to enable natural, declarative, modular and economial construction of large and complex computational lexicons. The selection sets are deduced from a transformation between UCG and Context-Free Grammar (CFG) and used to reduce search space for the table-driven algorithm. The experimental tests on a spoken English corpus show that the hierarchical lexicon achieves a dramatic reduction on redundant information and that selection sets significantly improve parsing UCG with a polynomial time complexity.

Abstract:Network traffic classification plays an important role and benefits many practical network issues,such as Next-Generation Firewalls（NGFW）,Quality of Service（QoS）,etc.To face the challenges brought by modern high speed networks,many inspiring solutions have been proposed to enhance traffic classification.However,taking many factual network conditions into consideration,e.g.,diversity of network environment,traffic classification methods based on Deep Inspection（DI） technique still occupy the top spot in actual usage.In this paper,we propose a novel classification system employing Deep Inspection technique,aiming to achieve Parallel Protocol Parsing（PPP）.We start with an analytical study of the existing popular DI methods,namely,regular expression based methods and protocol parsing based methods.Motivated by their relative merits,we extend traditional protocol parsers to achieve parallel matching,which is the representative merit of regular expression.We build a prototype system,and evaluation results show that significant improvement has been made comparing to existing open-source solutions in terms of both memory usage and throughput.

Abstract:In processing ill-formed spontaneous spoken utterance, many state-of-the-art robust parsers achieve robustness by allowing skipping of words and rule symbols. The parser's ability to skip words and rule symbols, however, results in a much bigger search space and greatly increases the parse ambiguity [1]. Previous approaches resolved these issues through manually labeling the types of rule symbols, or by utilizing heuristic scores or statistical probabilities. However, these approaches have certain drawbacks. This paper proposes to exploit embedded machine learning techniques to help with pruning and disambiguation in robust parsers. An embedded machine learning system is integrated with the heuristic score and the strategy of basing the types of rule symbols upon their correspondence to the domain model. This integration can considerably relieve the reliance of robust parser development on linguistic expert handerafting. Our experiments show that this integration offers stronger capability in ambiguity resolution, thereby enabling the robust parser to achieve better parsing accuracy.

Abstract:We evaluate three leading dependency parser systems from different paradigms on a small yet diverse subset of languages in terms of their accuracy-efficiency Pareto front. As we are interested in efficiency, we evaluate core parsers without pretrained language models (as these are typically huge networks and would constitute most of the compute time) or other augmentations that can be transversally applied to any of them. Biaffine parsing emerges as a well-balanced default choice, with sequence-labelling parsing being preferable if inference speed (but not training energy cost) is the priority.

Abstract:We describe a parser of English effectuated by biologically plausible neurons and synapses, and implemented through the Assembly Calculus, a recently proposed computational framework for cognitive function. We demonstrate that this device is capable of correctly parsing reasonably nontrivial sentences. While our experiments entail rather simple sentences in English, our results suggest that the parser can be extended beyond what we have implemented, to several directions encompassing much of language. For example, we present a simple Russian version of the parser, and discuss how to handle recursion, embedding, and polysemy.

Abstract:We describe a recently developed corpus annotation scheme for evaluating parsers that avoids shortcomings of current methods. The scheme encodes grammatical relations between heads and dependents, and has been used to mark up a new public-domain corpus of naturally occurring English text. We show how the corpus can be used to evaluate the accuracy of a robust parser, and relate the corpus to extant resources.

Abstract:Context: Meta programming consists for a large part of matching, analyzing, and transforming syntax trees. Many meta programming systems process abstract syntax trees, but this requires intimate knowledge of the structure of the data type describing the abstract syntax. As a result, meta programming is error-prone, and meta programs are not resilient to evolution of the structure of such ASTs, requiring invasive, fault-prone change to these programs. Inquiry: Concrete syntax patterns alleviate this problem by allowing the meta programmer to match and create syntax trees using the actual syntax of the object language. Systems supporting concrete syntax patterns, however, require a concrete grammar of the object language in their own formalism. Creating such grammars is a costly and error-prone process, especially for realistic languages such as Java and C++. Approach: In this paper we present Concretely, a technique to extend meta programming systems with pluggable concrete syntax patterns, based on external, black box parsers. We illustrate Concretely in the context of Rascal, an open-source meta programming system and language workbench, and show how to reuse existing parsers for Java, JavaScript, and C++. Furthermore, we propose Tympanic, a DSL to declaratively map external AST structures to Rascal's internal data structures. Tympanic allows implementors of Concretely to solve the impedance mismatch between object-oriented class hierarchies in Java and Rascal's algebraic data types. Both the algebraic data type and AST marshalling code is automatically generated. Knowledge: The conceptual architecture of Concretely and Tympanic supports the reuse of pre-existing, external parsers, and their AST representation in meta programming systems that feature concrete syntax patterns for matching and constructing syntax trees. As such this opens up concrete syntax pattern matching for a host of realistic languages for which writing a grammar from scratch is time consuming and error-prone, but for which industry-strength parsers exist in the wild. Grounding: We evaluate Concretely in terms of source lines of code (SLOC), relative to the size of the AST data type and marshalling code. We show that for real programming languages such as C++ and Java, adding support for concrete syntax patterns takes an effort only in the order of dozens of SLOC. Similarly, we evaluate Tympanic in terms of SLOC, showing an order of magnitude of reduction in SLOC compared to manual implementation of the AST data types and marshalling code. Importance: Meta programming has applications in reverse engineering, reengineering, source code analysis, static analysis, software renovation, domain-specific language engineering, and many others. Processing of syntax trees is central to all of these tasks. Concrete syntax patterns improve the practice of constructing meta programs. The combination of Concretely and Tympanic has the potential to make concrete syntax patterns available with very little effort, thereby improving and promoting the application of meta programming in the general software engineering context.

Abstract:Because of the importance of object oriented methodologies, the research in developing new measure for object oriented system development is getting increased focus. The most of the metrics need to find the interactions between the objects and modules for developing necessary metric and an influential software measure that is attracting the software developers, designers and researchers. In this paper a new interactions are defined for object oriented system. Using these interactions, a parser is developed to analyze the existing architecture of the software. Within the design model, it is necessary for design classes to collaborate with one another. However, collaboration should be kept to an acceptable minimum i.e. better designing practice will introduce low coupling. If a design model is highly coupled, the system is difficult to implement, to test and to maintain overtime. In case of enhancing software, we need to introduce or remove module and in that case coupling is the most important factor to be considered because unnecessary coupling may make the system unstable and may cause reduction in the system's performance. So coupling is thought to be a desirable goal in software construction, leading to better values for external software qualities such as maintainability, reusability and so on. To test this hypothesis, a good measure of class coupling is needed. In this paper, based on the developed tool called Design Analyzer we propose a methodology to reuse an existing system with the objective of enhancing an existing Object oriented system keeping the coupling as low as possible.

Abstract:A new general parsing method based on the syntax parsing techniques is proposed for the ABNF-coded protocol messages.Taking the ABNF rule set of the text-message syntax as input,it can automatically parse the protocol messages.The experimental results presented show that the new way is stricter and provides a more general usage compared with the traditional specific methods.

An Evaluation of Communication Protocol Languages for Engineering Multiagent Systems

Abstract:Communication protocols are central to engineering decentralized multiagent systems. Modern protocol languages are typically formal and address aspects of decentralization, such as asynchrony. However, modern languages differ in important ways in their basic abstractions and operational assumptions. This diversity makes a comparative evaluation of protocol languages a challenging task. We contribute a rich evaluation of modern protocol languages based on diverse approaches. Among the selected languages, Scribble is based on session types; Trace-C and Trace-F on trace expressions; HAPN on hierarchical state machines, and BSPL on information causality. Our contribution is four-fold. One, we contribute important criteria for evaluating protocol languages. Two, for each criterion, we compare the languages on the basis of whether they are able to specify elementary protocols that go to the heart of the criterion. Three, for each language, we map our findings to a canonical architecture style for multiagent systems, highlighting where the languages depart from the architecture. Four, we identify a few design principles for protocol languages as guidance for future research.

Abstract:GLR* is a recently developed robust version of the Generalized LR Parser, that can parse almost ANY input sentence by ignoring unrecognizable parts of the sentence. On a given input sentence, the parser returns a collection of parses that correspond to maximal, or close to maximal, parsable subsets of the original input. This paper describes recent work on developing an integrated heuristic scheme for selecting the parse that is deemed ``best'' from such a collection. We describe the heuristic measures used and their combination scheme. Preliminary results from experiments conducted on parsing speech recognized spontaneous speech are also reported.

Dynamic Syntax Mapping: A New Approach to Unsupervised Syntax Parsing

Abstract:The intricate hierarchical structure of syntax is fundamental to the intricate and systematic nature of human language. This study investigates the premise that language models, specifically their attention distributions, can encapsulate syntactic dependencies. We introduce Dynamic Syntax Mapping (DSM), an innovative approach for the agnostic induction of these structures. Our method diverges from traditional syntax models which rely on predefined annotation schemata. Instead, we focus on a core characteristic inherent in dependency relations: syntactic substitutability. This concept refers to the interchangeability of words within the same syntactic category at either end of a dependency. By leveraging this property, we generate a collection of syntactically invariant sentences, which serve as the foundation for our parsing framework. Our findings reveal that the use of an increasing array of substitutions notably enhances parsing precision on natural language data. Specifically, in the context of long-distance subject-verb agreement, DSM exhibits a remarkable advancement over prior methodologies. Furthermore, DSM's adaptability is demonstrated through its successful application in varied parsing scenarios, underscoring its broad applicability.

Abstract:POEMS is a Parallel Object-oriented Environment for Multi-computer Systems. In order to support dynamic load balancing, its runtime execution model is based on object replication. Method invocation in POEMS is asynchronous and threads are created to execute methods. Inter-object, intra-object as well as intra-method parallelism are all supported. Programs in POEMS are written using two classes of objects, i.e. parallel object replication (POR) and parallel object collection (POC) classes. They are used to support programming in MPMD and SPMD styles, respectively. This paper will focus on the object models and programming facilities of POEMS and presents some preliminary performance studies. The major features and execution models of POR and POC classes are described in detail. In addition, some typical applications are also presented to illustrate the usage of these two classes. The implementation issues of a POEMS prototype runtime system are also discussed.

Abstract:We present a system for generating parsers based directly on the metaphor of parsing as deduction. Parsing algorithms can be represented directly as deduction systems, and a single deduction engine can interpret such deduction systems so as to implement the corresponding parser. The method generalizes easily to parsers for augmented phrase structure formalisms, such as definite-clause grammars and other logic grammar formalisms, and has been used for rapid prototyping of parsing algorithms for a variety of formalisms including variants of tree-adjoining grammars, categorial grammars, and lexicalized context-free grammars.
A Novel Parser Design Algorithm Based on Artificial Ants

Abstract:This article presents a unique design for a parser using the Ant Colony Optimization algorithm. The paper implements the intuitive thought process of human mind through the activities of artificial ants. The scheme presented here uses a bottom-up approach and the parsing program can directly use ambiguous or redundant grammars. We allocate a node corresponding to each production rule present in the given grammar. Each node is connected to all other nodes (representing other production rules), thereby establishing a completely connected graph susceptible to the movement of artificial ants. Each ant tries to modify this sentential form by the production rule present in the node and upgrades its position until the sentential form reduces to the start symbol S. Successful ants deposit pheromone on the links that they have traversed through. Eventually, the optimum path is discovered by the links carrying maximum amount of pheromone concentration. The design is simple, versatile, robust and effective and obviates the calculation of the above mentioned sets and precedence relation tables. Further advantages of our scheme lie in i) ascertaining whether a given string belongs to the language represented by the grammar, and ii) finding out the shortest possible path from the given string to the start symbol S in case multiple routes exist.

Abstract:This paper has the goals (1) of unifying top-down parsing with shift-reduce parsing to yield a single simple and consistent framework, and (2) of producing provably correct parsing methods, deterministic as well as tabular ones, for extended context-free grammars (EBNF) represented as state-transition networks. Departing from the traditional way of presenting as independent algorithms the deterministic bottom-up LR(1), the top-down LL(1) and the general tabular (Earley) parsers, we unify them in a coherent minimalist framework. We present a simple general construction method for EBNF ELR(1) parsers, where the new category of convergence conflicts is added to the classical shift-reduce and reduce-reduce conflicts; we prove its correctness and show two implementations by deterministic push-down machines and by vector-stack machines, the latter to be also used for Earley parsers. Then the Beatty's theoretical characterization of LL(1) grammars is adapted to derive the extended ELL(1 parsing method, first by minimizing the ELR(1) parser and then by simplifying its state information. Through using the same notations in the ELR(1) case, the extended Earley parser is obtained. Since all the parsers operate on compatible representations, it is feasible to combine them into mixed mode algorithms.
